<ul><li><keyword id="10926" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance">Reliance</keyword> Industries on Sunday said it sold 1.16 per cent stake in its digital unit to Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) for ₹5,683.50 crore.</li><li>This takes Jio’s total fundraise to ₹97,885.65 crore.</li><li>The <keyword id="9361390" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="aida-deal">AIDA deal</keyword> comes within days of Mubadala Investment Co investing ₹9,093.60 crore in Jio and Silver Lake picking up additional stake for ₹4,546.80 crore.</li></ul>Reliance Industries on Sunday said it sold 1.16 per cent stake in its digital unit to Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) for ₹5,683.50 crore, taking the cumulative fund raising to ₹97,885.65 crore that will help pare debt at the oil-to-telecom conglomerate. <br /><br />"This investment values Jio Platforms at an equity value of  ₹4.91 lakh crore and an enterprise value of ₹5.16 lakh crore. ADIA's investment will translate into a 1.16 per cent equity stake in Jio Platforms on a fully diluted basis," the company said in a statement. <br /><br />With this investment, Jio Platforms has raised ₹97,885.65 crore from leading global investors including Facebook, Silver Lake, Vista Equity Partners, General Atlantic, KKR, Mubadala and ADIA in less than seven weeks. <br /><br />The AIDA deal comes within days of Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund Mubadala Investment Co picking up 1.85 per cent in Jio Platforms for ₹9,093.60 crore on June 5. On that day, private equity fund Silver Lake invested another ₹4,546.80 crore for additional 0.93 per cent stake in Jio Platforms. <br /><br />With these investment, Reliance has sold all of the targeted 21 per cent equity in Jio Platforms ahead of a potential IPO. <br /><br />Jio Platforms, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Reliance Industries Ltd, is a next-generation technology company. <keyword id="6354504" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="reliance-jio">Reliance Jio</keyword> Infocomm Ltd, with 388 million mobile subscribers, will continue to be a wholly-owned subsidiary of Jio Platforms. <br /><br />The deals follows Facebook picking up a 9.99 per cent stake in the firm that houses India's youngest but largest telecom firm on April 22 for Rs 43,574 crore. Within days of that deal, Silver Lake - the world's largest tech investor - bought a 1.15 per cent stake in Jio Platforms for Rs 5,665.75 crore on May 4. <br /><br />On May 8, US-based Vista Equity Partners bought 2.32 per cent stake in Jio Platforms for Rs 11,367 crore. On May 17, global equity firm General Atlantic picked up 1.34 per cent stake in Jio Platforms for Rs 6,598.38 crore. This was followed by US private equity giant KKR buying 2.32 per cent for Rs 11,367 crore. <br /><br />On June 5, Silver Lake made an additional investment to take its stake to 2.08 per cent. <br /><br />Established in 1976, ADIA is a globally-diversified investment institution that prudently invests funds on behalf of the Government of Abu Dhabi through a strategy focused on long-term value creation. It manages a global investment portfolio that is diversified across more than two dozen asset classes and sub-categories. <br /><br /><keyword id="3820" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mukesh-Ambani">Mukesh Ambani</keyword>, Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries, said, "I am delighted that ADIA, with its track record of more than four decades of successful long-term value investing across the world, is partnering with Jio Platforms in its mission to take India to digital leadership and generate inclusive growth opportunities. Our investment in Jio is a further demonstration of ADIA's ability to draw on deep regional and sector expertise to invest globally in market leading companies and alongside proven partners," Hamad Shahwan Aldhaheri, Executive Director of the Private Equities Department at ADIA, said. <br /><br />Morgan Stanley acted as financial advisor to Reliance Industries and AZB &amp; Partners, and Davis Polk &amp; Wardwell acted as legal counsel. <br /><br />Ambani, 63, chairman and managing director of Reliance, had in August last year set a target of March 2021, to make his conglomerate net debt-free. But thanks to the Facebook deal, a Rs 53,125 crore rights issue, private equity investments, and more stake sale to companies such as Saudi Aramco, the target is likely to be achieved by December. <br /><br />At the end of March quarter, Reliance had an outstanding debt of Rs 3,36,294 crore and cash in hand of Rs 1,75,259 crore. After adjusting cash, the net debt came to Rs 1,61,035 crore. <br /><br />Of the outstanding debt, Rs 2,62,000 crore is on Reliance books and Rs 23,000 crore is with Jio. ANZ BAL BAL

New Delhi, Jun 8 () Shares of Reliance Industries on Monday jumped nearly 3 per cent after the company sold 1.16 per cent stake in its digital unit to Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) for Rs 5,683.50 crore. <p> It gained 2.74 per cent to touch a one-year high of Rs 1,624 on BSE. </p><p> On NSE, it rose 2.32 per cent to Rs 1,618.40 -- its 52-week high. </p><p> Reliance Industries on Sunday said it sold 1.16 per cent stake in Jip Platforms to ADIA for Rs 5,683.50 crore, taking the cumulative fund raising to Rs 97,885.65 crore that will help pare debt at the oil-to-telecom conglomerate. </p><p> "This investment values Jio Platforms at an equity value of Rs 4.91 lakh crore and an enterprise value of Rs 5.16 lakh crore. Sources tell us that it is still fighting for a spot that is also being considered by Microsoft. “It will be either Google or Microsoft in the last tranche. Reliance Jio will have to reject one. Google or Microsoft will be investing for a 6% stake. It has to make business sense. Google has been pursuing them from the same time as Facebook,” a source told Business Insider.<br /><br />Business Insider has sent an email with queries to Reliance and will update the copy with the company's response.<br /><br />However, Google is also reportedly in talks with Vodafone Idea for a minority stake. Google’s interest in Vodafone had rallied the stocks of the telecom giant. Maas comes out on January 30. </li><li>The "Crescent City" series has a massive cast of characters that can be hard to keep track of.</li></ul><p>The wait is almost over. On January 30, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sarah-j-maas-confirmed-working-on-next-acotar-book-2023-9">Sarah J. Maas</a> will release "House of Flame and Shadow," the third book in her best-selling <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sarah-j-maas-crescent-city-acotar-release-details-2023-9">"Crescent City" series</a>.</p><p>The series follows Bryce Quinlan, a half-fae living in Lunathion, also known as Crescent City, on the continent Valbara on the planet Midgard. Fans have been anxiously awaiting the third installment, as the second book in the series, "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sarah-j-maas-books-ranking-most-emotional-2023-10">House of Sky and Breath</a>," ended on a dramatic cliffhanger.</p><p>"Crescent City" has a huge cast of characters, most of which are magical creatures referred to as Vanir. That cast will likely only expand in "House of Flame and Shadow," as the book is set to cross over with Maas' "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sarah-j-maas-books-reading-order-acotar-crescent-city-2023-3">A Court of Thorns and Roses</a>" series, which has four books and a novella packed with characters.</p><p>To help prepare you for the third book, Business Insider created a guide to some of the most important characters in the "Crescent City" universe.</p><p>The rest of this article contains major spoilers for the "Crescent City" and "A Court of Thorns and Roses" series. Her mother is Ember Quinlan, a human, and she considers her stepfather, a human sharpshooter named Randall Silago, her real dad.</p><p>But her birth father is Einar Danaan, known as the Autumn King to the public. Einar is the ruler of the Valbaran fae, and his son, Ruhn Danaan, Crown Prince of the Valbaran fae, is Bryce's half-brother.</p><p>Bryce and Ruhn are heirs to the Starborn fae lineage, giving them power over starlight and the ability to wield the Starsword, an ancient sword forged from an actual star. Bryce has more starlight power than Ruhn, though he is a full-blooded fae. Ruhn also has power from his mother's lineage, allowing him to wield shadows and speak into other people's minds — the latter of which he keeps secret from most people.</p><p>Bryce can blind people with her power and has an eight-pointed star scar on her chest that glows at different times. Bryce's power also allows her to teleport, and she can absorb other Vanir's powers for short bursts of time because she made the Drop through a gate, where Vanir drop their power daily.</p><div type="image" title="The cover of &quot;House of Flame and Shadow&quot; by Sarah J. Maas." height="3077" width="2000" msid="106940495" hostid="261" sizebytes="428096"></div><p>In addition to her Starborn abilities, Bryce became a portal after her friend Danika Fendyr (more on her in a bit) inked Luna's Horn, a magical object that creates portals, onto her back, allowing her to travel between worlds.</p><p>Bryce meets her mate Orion (Hunt) Athalar in "House of Earth and Blood," though they don't recognize themselves as such until "House of Sky and Breath." Hunt is an angel, a species formally referred to as a Malakh on Midgard. Hunt can fly thanks to his wings, and he has power over lightning.</p><p>Hunt was previously a slave owned by the republic as punishment for rebelling against them, but he was freed at the end of "House of Earth and Blood." However, he still works for the 33rd Legion as a member of the triarii, the private protection for the governor of Crescent City, who is always an archangel.</p><p>At the end of "House of Sky and Breath," Ruhn and Hunt help Bryce escape to another world to save their planet from the Asteri, evil creatures who have been leeching power from its citizens for centuries.</p><h2>Bryce's late friend Danika Fendyr and her Pack of Devils move the plot along despite dying in the first book</h2><p>Bryce met her best friend Danika Fendyr at college, and they were attached at the hip until Danika died at the beginning of "House of Earth and Blood." Danika was a powerful wolf shifter, the Alpha of the Pack of Devils, and the heir apparent to the Valbaran wolves. She was also a bloodhound, allowing her to sniff people's bloodlines.</p><p>She worked quietly to undermine the Asteri until her death, tattooing the horn on Bryce's back and partnering with a human named Sofie Renast to uncover how the Asteri came to Midgard.</p><div type="image" title="The cover of &quot;House of Earth and Blood&quot; by Sarah J. Maas." height="3039" width="2000" msid="106940497" hostid="261" sizebytes="302954"></div><p>Before her death, she also secretly mated the angel Baxian Argos, known to most as the Helhound, and left a luxury apartment to Bryce in her will, where she kept clues about her rebellious activities. Baxian tried to help Bryce and Hunt throughout "House of Sky and Breath," and the Asteri took him prisoner alongside Ruhn and Hunt at the end of the book.</p><p>Danika's pack included Connor Holstrom, her Second, who was romantically interested in Bryce. The Archangel Micah murdered Danika, Connor, and the rest of the pack after she stole Luna's Horn. Bryce killed Micah when she discovered who murdered her friends.</p><h2>Bryce and Ruhn's friends back them up throughout the series</h2><p>Ruhn's best friends are Declan Emmet and Tristan Flynn, two fae with whom he went through his Ordeal, a magical challenge fae must overcome. The trio also work for the Auxiliary, Crescent City's law enforcement agency, and live in a house together.</p><p>Declan is skilled at cyber security, often hacking into different networks to help his friends, and Flynn, who has earth magic, will inherit the title of lord when his father dies. Declan and Flynn helped Bryce, Hunt, and Ruhn break into the Asteri's palace remotely in "House of Sky and Breath," though it's unclear if the Asteri knew of their involvement.</p><p>Aside from Danika, Bryce also became good friends with Fury Axtar and Juniper Andromeda in college. Juniper is a faun and professional dancer, while Fury is a Vanir whose species is classified. She works as an assassin for hire. Juniper and Fury also revealed to Bryce they were in a romantic relationship at the end of "House of Earth and Blood."</p><h2>Mer Tharion Ketos and wolf shifter Ithan Holstrom worked with Bryce, Ruhn, and Hunt in 'House of Sky and Breath'</h2><p>Tharion and Ithan were introduced in "House of Earth and Blood," but their plots became more involved in the second book in the "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sarah-j-maas-shut-down-fan-theories-about-crescent-city-2023-9">Crescent City</a>" series. They also both move into Ruhn's house during the second book.</p><p>As a mer, Tharion lived in an underwater city ruled by the River Queen, and he was her Captain of Intelligence at the start of the series. He was also betrothed to her daughter after being intimate with her years ago, though he doesn't want to be with her. Tharion works with Bryce and Hunt to discover the whereabouts of Sofie Renast's brother Emile, though he backs off when he finds out Emile lacks magical powers.</p><p>Tharion also leaves the River Queen's court in "HOSAB," offering himself to the Viper Queen instead so he doesn't have to live underwater. A snake shifter, the Viper Queen rules over the Meat Market in Crescent City, where seedy dealings often go down. Those working for her often become addicted to her venom.</p><p>Ithan is Connor's younger brother, and he had a promising career as a sunball player, though he quit after his brother's death. Sabine Fendyr, Danika's mother, kicks him out of his wolf pack at the beginning of "House of Sky and Breath" for defending Bryce in the press, making him a lone wolf. Danika's father is Mordoc, a cruel dreadwolf who works for the Asteri.</p><p>Ithan also loved Bryce, which he always kept to himself because of Connor and Bryce's connection. In "HOSAB," he goes with Bryce to a mystic, discovering a wolf shifter separated from her family. The Prime of the wolves reveals to him the wolf is likely the lost Fendyr heir who could challenge Sabine for the Prime position when he dies. At the end of the book, Ithan steals the unnamed wolf from the mystic, hoping to protect her from Sabine.</p><h2>The estranged half-sisters the Hind, aka Lidia Cervos, and Hypaxia Enador were major players in 'HOSAB'</h2><div type="image" title="&quot;House of Sky and Breath&quot; by Sarah J. Maas." height="3004" width="2000" msid="106940500" hostid="261" sizebytes="315644"></div><p>Hypaxia Enador became Queen of the Valbaran Witches in "House of Earth and Blood" after her mother died. She is both a witch and a necromancer, allowing her to speak to the dead. She inherited her necromancy gifts from her father.</p><p>When she became queen, the Autumn King arranged a marriage between Ruhn and Hypaxia, hoping to increase the fae's power in Valbara. Ruhn and Hypaxia have friendly interactions in "House of Earth and Blood," but unbeknownst to him, the witch has a secret lover. She is involved with Celestina, the archangel who replaces Micah as Crescent City's governor after his death. Their relationship is a secret to all but Bryce and Hunt, who walk in on them being intimate at a ball.</p><p>Lidia Cervos and Hypaxia share a mother, but Lidia's father's family raised her because she inherited his deer shifter gifts instead of her mother's witch powers. Lidia was recruited by the evil archangel Sandriel (who is killed by Hunt in "House of Earth and Blood") to join her triarii, and she became not only her spymaster but spymaster for the Asteri. She is also the cruel angel Pollux Antonius' lover, seeming to thrive among the evil.</p><p>But unbeknownst to everyone, Lidia is a spy for the rebel group Ophion, going undercover as Agent Daybright with no one knowing she hates the Asteri and Pollux. Ruhn, as Agent Night, connects with Day using his mind-speaking powers while helping Bryce search for Emile, and they fall in love without knowing who the other is.</p><p>Lidia won't tell Ruhn who she is even after discovering his identity, only revealing herself to save him and Bryce when they are captured after breaking into the Asteri's Archives at the end of "House of Sky and Breath."</p><h2>Aidas, a Hel prince, is trying to free Midgard of the Asteri, which includes Rigelus</h2><p>In "Crescent City," Bryce has contact with Aidas, one of the seven princes of Hel. Rather than being a place of punishment for the dead, Hel is another planet in the "Crescent City" universe. It's considered an evil place to the public, particularly because demons can be called to Midgard from it. But Bryce discovered in "HOSAB" that Hel has been trying to help Midgard's citizens fight against the Asteri for thousands of years. The Asteri tried to conquer Hel before coming to Midgard, and the princes killed Sirius, one of the Asteri, while pushing them out.</p><p>Aidas visited Bryce when she was a child in the form of a cat, and he later appeared to her as a handsome blond man when she called on him as an adult. Aidas is invested in Bryce's Starborn power, as he previously fought against the Asteri alongside the last Starborn Queen, Theia.</p><p>Six members of the Asteri still exist on Midgard, and they're led by Rigelus, known as the Bright Hand of the Asteri. The Asteri's power is described as almost god-like in "Crescent City," and unbeknownst to the world, they feed off of the firstlight Vanir release when they make the Drop, where they come into their magical power and become immortal, and the secondlight they release after they die.</p><p>Rigelus intends to use the horn on Bryce's back to get to the planet her breed of fae originated from, as he wants to feed on them again. She escapes him thanks to assistance from Ruhn and Hunt, intending to open a portal to Hel in the hopes she can find Aidas and get his help ridding her planet of the Asteri.</p><h2>The cast of 'A Court of Thorns and Roses' will also be important in 'House of Flame and Shadow'</h2><div type="image" title="A side-by-side of the cover of &quot;A Court of Thorns and Roses&quot; and a headshot of Sarah J. Maas." height="1080" width="1440" msid="106940503" hostid="261" sizebytes="100572"></div><p>To her dismay, Bryce doesn't reach Hel, instead finding herself in a strange, idyllic land. That land is Prythian, where the "A Court of Thorns and Roses" series is set.</p><p>Bryce is only formally introduced to Rhysand in "House of Sky and Breath," though she appears to interact with Feyre Archeron, Nesta Archeron, Amren, Cassian, and Azriel. Feyre and Rhysand are the High Lord and High Lady of the Night Court, and the others serve in their court. Nesta is also one of Feyre's sisters, and she is mated to Cassian.</p><p>All the court members are fae, though Amren used to be another more powerful creature before she sacrificed that part of herself during a war in "A Court of Wings and Ruin."</p><p>Bryce's interactions with the Night Court are brief in "HOSAB," but <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sarah-j-maas-halloween-costumes-acotar-throne-of-glass-2023-10">Maas</a> revealed several connections between "Crescent City" and the "ACOTAR" universe in the chapter. First, Bryce thinks Rhysand is her brother when she first sees him because he looks nearly identical to Ruhn. In addition, the Starsword lights up when placed next to Azriel's knife, Truth-Teller, indicating it is Truth-Teller's long-lost twin weapon, Gwydion, which is mentioned several times in "ACOTAR." Likewise, Bryce discovers she can communicate with Rhysand and Amren by speaking the ancient language of the fae.</p><p>Maas hasn't revealed what role the cast of "ACOTAR" will play in "House of Flame and Shadow," but she <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sarah-j-maas-crescent-city-acotar-release-details-2023-9">teased</a> an interaction between Bryce, Nesta, and Azriel in an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sarah-j-maas-crescent-city-acotar-release-details-2023-9">excerpt from the book</a> that she shared on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.instagram.com/p/C17hDhju94-/?hl=en">Instagram</a>.</p><p>"Bryce began running again, hurtling through the cave. Maas' "Crescent City" series, "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/sarah-j-maas-crescent-city-acotar-release-details-2023-9">House of Flame and Shadow,</a>" will finally hit bookshelves.</p><p>It's been nearly two years since "House of Sky and Breath," the second book in the series about Bryce Quinlan, a half-fae living on the planet Midgard, was released.</p><p>Readers have been anxiously anticipating the third book after <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/sarah-j-maas-books-reading-order-acotar-crescent-city-2023-3">Maas</a> revealed the "Crescent City" world was connected to her popular "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/sarah-j-maas-confirmed-working-on-next-acotar-book-2023-9">A Court of Thorns and Roses</a>" series at the end of "House of Sky and Breath."</p><p>Luckily, fans only have to wait until the end of January to see what will happen to Bryce. But both "House of Sky and Breath" and the first book in the series, "House of Earth and Blood," are massive and feature a huge cast of characters, so fans may need a reminder of what's happened in the "Crescent City" series before inhaling "House of Flame and Shadow." </p><p>The rest of this article is full of spoilers for the series.</p><h2>'Crescent City' takes place on Midgard, a planet home to four houses of creatures</h2><div type="image" title="The cover of &quot;House of Earth and Blood&quot; by Sarah J. Maas." height="3040" width="2000" msid="106391189" hostid="261" sizebytes="347118"></div><p>Midgard has the largest variety of supernatural creatures in a Maas series, from faeries and merpeople to fauns and vampyrs. The non-human creatures are referred to as Vanir, and they develop powers such as centuries-long lifespans and super-hearing after they make the "Drop," a burst of pure magic that helps power the planet's grid system.</p><p>The planet is organized into four houses, and they're all home to multiple creatures: the House of Earth and Blood, the House of Sky and Breath, the House of Flame and Shadow, and the House of Many Waters. Humans belong to the House of Earth and Blood, while fae are members of the House of Sky and Breath.</p><p>Creatures called the Asteri rule over all of the Houses on Midgard, and the Archangels on the Imperial Senate do much of their day-to-day ruling as governors. Humans have historically been at the bottom of Midgard's ranks, serving as slaves for other creatures, though they have gained a degree of freedom by the time the plot of the "Crescent City" series begins.</p><p>Much of Maas' story takes place in Crescent City, which is on a continent called Valbara, though the Asteri live in the Eternal City on Pangera.</p><p>In addition, "Crescent City" features modern technology alongside magic, unlike Maas' other series. The characters have cellphones, play modern sports like baseball, and attend universities.</p><h2>Protagonist Bryce Quinlan is heir to the Starborn fae </h2><p>In "House of Earth and Blood," Bryce reveals that she inherited the powers of the Starborn fae, so she can harness literal starlight, which is even more impressive considering her mother is human. She has an eight-pointed star on her chest to prove it.</p><p>But when she made the Drop, Bryce also gained power from everyone who had offered a drop of theirs to Crescent City in a fountain, giving her access to even more magic. She became more powerful than her brother, Prince Ruhn Danaan, and her father, the Autumn King, during her Drop, making her the heir to all the Starborn fae on Midgard.</p><p>As Bryce explores her power in "House of Sky and Breath," she discovers that she can teleport thanks to her Starborn lineage, and she can harness other fae's power, using her mate Hunt Athalar's lightning in the text.</p><p>Bryce also has a magical horn on her back, as her friend Danika Fendyr had it turned into tattoo ink and placed on her skin without her knowledge when Bryce was drunk. The horn allows Bryce to open portals to other worlds — which becomes critical to the plot.</p><h2>Bryce's mate, Hunt Athalar, has a history of rebelling against the Archangels</h2><p>Bryce meets Hunt in "House of Earth and Blood," when the archangel Micah — who is later killed by Bryce — forces them to investigate a murder together.</p><p>Hunt, whose real name is Orion, is a fallen angel with feathered wings and the power to control lightning. He fought against the Imperial Senate in a rebellion with his then-lover Shahar about 200 years before the plot of "House of Earth and Blood." They lost, Shahar died, and Hunt was forced into slavery.</p><p>He was serving out his time as an assassin for Micah when the archangel forced him to work with Bryce. However, Micah sells him to Shahar's evil sister, Sandriel, after Hunt is caught trying to bolster the human rebel movement with other fallen angels. Hunt is freed at the end of "House of Earth and Blood" by the head of the Asteri, Rigelus, after Bryce saves Crescent City from demons.</p><p>Bryce also publicly names Hunt as her mate at a ball during "House of Sky and Breath."</p><h2>Bryce's brother, Ruhn Danaan, had an affair with a rebel spy, and he's keeping a prophecy about himself secret</h2><p>Ruhn is the Crown Prince of the Valbaran Fae, as his mother is married to the Autumn King. He can control light and shadows and speak telepathically, and he is considered the "Chosen One" among the fae, as he pulled the famed Starsword from a cave during a battle.</p><p>As the crown prince, Ruhn is expected to carry on his father's bloodline, but he fears for his future because the Oracle told him, "The royal bloodline shall end with you." </p><p>He is working on repairing his relationship with Bryce throughout the series after the pair had a falling out when he was a teenager, and Ruhn joins the rebel movement with Bryce and Hunt in "House of Sky and Breath." Ruhn uses his telepathy to connect to a spy known as Agent Daybright (he calls the spy Day) after a rebel named Sofie dies and loses touch with her.</p><p>The pair start swapping information, and they develop a romantic connection without knowing who the other is, eventually becoming intimate through their minds. When he gets caught breaking into the Asteri's palace with Bryce, Ruhn discovers that Day is Lidia Cervos, known as the Hind, a spy-hunter for the Asteri. Though she is a double agent trying to overthrow them, Ruhn sees her true identity as a betrayal.</p><p>Ruhn helps Bryce escape the Asteri, giving her the Starsword and telling her about the Oracle's prophecy at the end of "HOSAB." But he is taken prisoner by the Asteri — and Lidia.</p><h2>Bryce discovered the Asteri are parasites at the climax of 'House of Sky and Breath' — and fled to another world</h2><div type="image" title="&quot;House of Sky and Breath&quot; by Sarah J. Maas." height="3004" width="2000" msid="106391190" hostid="261" sizebytes="315644"></div><p>Bryce, Hunt, and Ruhn break into the Asteri Archives at their palace in the Eternal City after seeing a video of Sofie going into them before her death.</p><p>During the mission, Bryce discovers the Asteri are not gods like everyone thinks. They're parasitic aliens who have conquered hundreds of planets, stealing magic from the beings that inhabit them, and they have been stuck on Midgard after trying and failing to conquer Hel.</p><p>In addition, the Vanir are not a different species. Instead, they are all types of fae from different planets that the Asteri brought to Midgard. They brainwashed them into thinking they originated there to give themselves a food source, using the first and second light the fae offer as sustenance.</p><p>Rigelus, the head of the Asteri, then reveals he wanted Bryce to discover the truth so she would open a portal to the planet her species of fae originally came from, as the Asteri were overthrown on the unnamed world and want to taste the planet's magic again.</p><p>Rather than acquiescing, Bryce flees and tries to open a portal to Hel, hoping her friend Aidas, one of the seven princes of Hel, can help her. She ends up in Prythian, the land from "A Court of Thorns and Roses," with Rhysand, the High Lord of the Night Court, introducing himself to her in the novel's final scene in the language of the ancient fae as his Inner Circle looks on.</p><h2>The fae from 'A Court of Thorns and Roses' look familiar to Bryce — especially Rhysand</h2><p>When Bryce arrives in Prythian, she notes several similarities between the fae she meets and those she knows at home.</p><p>She describes Amren as having "angular eyes like Fury's," her close friend in Crescent City with a classified Vanir category. She also notes that characters who seem to be Feyre, the High Lady of the Night Court, and her sister Nesta to "ACOTAR" fans have pointed ears like the fae she is familiar with.</p><p>But it's Rhysand's appearance that startles her most, as he looks exactly like Ruhn.</p><p>"His eyes were the same shade of violet blue as Ruhn's," she says. "His short hair the same gleaming black. This male's skin was browner, but the face, the posture…it was her brother's."</p><p>Maas has yet to detail the significance of Ruhn and Rhysand's similar appearances, but she did reveal that Bryce's Starsword is Gwydion, a weapon long lost in Prythian.</p><p>As Amren explains to Nesta in "A Court of Silver Flames," Gwydion was dipped in the cauldron as it was welded, giving it special powers. It's also a companion to Truth Teller, a blade Azriel carries, and the two weapons light up when they're placed next to each other at the end of "HOSAB."</p><h2>Tharion Ketos made it out of the confrontation with the Asteri alive</h2><p>Though the Asteri took Ruhn and Hunt prisoner after they broke into the archives, Tharion, a mer, managed to escape after he and Cormac Donnall, the Crown Prince of the Avallen Fae and a rebel fighter, distracted the Asteri during the break-in.</p><p>Cormac sacrificed himself to let Tharion escape, making Tharion the only person who physically went to the palace with Bryce's team to make it out alive.</p><p>Tharion had also made a deal to serve the Viper Queen before joining the mission to save himself after he told the River Princess he didn't want to marry her, as he feared her mother, the River Queen, would take revenge on him.</p><h2>Ithan Holstrom, a wolf shifter, saved a mystic who could shake up the pack rankings at the end of the book</h2><p>Ithan, a wolf shifter, is Connor Holstrom's younger brother. Connor was Danika's second in command, and he and Bryce were about to start dating before he died in "House of Earth and Blood."</p><p>Ithan and Bryce were close friends before the pack's murder — and he harbored secret romantic feelings for her — but when he saw texts that revealed she hooked up with someone else the night Connor died, Ithan cut Bryce off completely.</p><p>But they're reunited in "House of Sky and Breath" after Ithan is kicked out of his pack for defending Bryce, and he starts working with her group. </p><p>Ithan later stumbles upon a wolf when he and Bryce visit the mystics in search of information about the afterlife.</p><p>When Ithan tells the leader of the wolves about it, he implies that she is the lost Fendyr heir who could unite the wolf packs. In the epilogue of "HOSAB," Ithan steals the unnamed mystic away in hopes of protecting her and saving the wolf shifters.</p>

What to remember about the 'Crescent City' series before reading 'House of Flame and Shadow'

Cruise lines told ship workers to carry on as normal as coronavirus spread. Now, many crew members are infected or unemployed.

At the top of the hierarchy are officers: managers and those responsible for navigation. In the middle are staff members, which include workers in entertainment, retail, and guest services. At the bottom are crew members, who are generally responsible for serving guests. They include servers, bartenders, and cleaning staff.</p><p>Crew and lower-paid staff members have described to Business Insider more difficult working and living conditions than officers, and many reported monthly earnings of $2,000 or less. Of the 39 current and former cruise-ship workers who told Business Insider their monthly earnings, 18 said they at one point made $2,000 or less per month.</p><p>That's not uncommon, as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/carnival">Carnival Corp.</a> and <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/rcl-stock">Royal Caribbean Cruises</a> reported median annual earnings for their employees of less than $20,000 in 2018, while <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/norwegian-cruise-line">Norwegian Cruise Line</a> reported median earnings for its employees just above $20,000. Those figures are significantly lower than the earnings of the median worker in the US, who made $32,838 last year, according to the Social Security Administration's <a href="https://www.ssa.gov/oact/cola/central.html">estimate</a>. And they're minuscule when compared with the compensation received by each company's chief executive. <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/nclh-stock">Norwegian</a> CEO Frank Del Rio made $22.6 million last year, while <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/ccl-stock">Carnival</a> CEO Arnold Donald made $13.5 million and Royal Caribbean CEO Richard Fain made $12.4 million.</p><p>The cruise-ship workers Business Insider spoke with who reported the highest monthly earnings, which fell between $5,000 and $10,000, tended to be from the US or Canada. Those who reported earnings of $2,000 or less tended to be from South America, Eastern Europe, or Southeast Asia.</p><p>A <a href="http://www.sirc.cf.ac.uk/uploads/publications/WorldCruiseIndustry.pdf">2005 study</a> from the Seafarers International Research Centre found that 70% of cruise-ship workers were from regions that didn't have what the International Monetary Fund calls "advanced" economies, like Latin America, Eastern Europe, and parts of Asia, while 30% of workers came from regions with advanced economies, like the US and Western Europe. Workers from advanced economies were much more likely to be officers than workers from nonadvanced economies, the study found.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><p>William Terry, an associate professor at Clemson University who has studied the recruitment of cruise-ship employees, came to a similar conclusion after talking to hundreds of cruise-ship workers in 2007 and 2008.</p><p>"For so many people looking to get ahead, there's a reality that they're probably going to be locked out of certain positions simply because of where they come from," he said.</p><p>The cruise industry's labor force is a product of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-cruise-ship-workers-take-brutal-jobs-2018-11">global economic inequalities</a>, Terry said. Workers from countries without advanced economies told him they wouldn't have taken a cruise-ship job if they could have found work at home that could have provided equal or better pay.</p><p>A representative for the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), a trade association whose members include Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian, told Business Insider that "some member lines have engaged in partnerships with training institutions in developing nations to increase their numbers in leadership positions."</p><p>The representative added that "cruise lines invest heavily to attract the best people, offering an extremely competitive package of wages and benefits, as well as ensuring crew members have the training to perform jobs skillfully and advance on a rewarding career path."</p><p>"We recognize all industries have a small number of unsatisfied employees; however, the cruise industry is proud to report that the thousands of employed crew members are very satisfied with current jobs and opportunities for career advancement," the representative said. "In fact, employee-retention rates in the cruise industry are upwards of 80%. "</p><h2><strong>Officers get favorable treatment, workers say</strong></h2><p>Aida Carvalho, who is from Brazil and was a human-resources manager for MSC Cruises, Viking Cruises, and Holland America Line from 2015 until February 2019, said there was a large gap between the monthly pay of the highest and lowest-ranking employees. Galley workers, who are responsible for tasks related to cleaning and waste disposal in a ship's kitchen, could make less than $800 per month, while captains could make about $15,000 per month. </p><p>"It's not fair that someone will work 11 hours a day dealing with garbage and [get] only $700," she said.</p><p>Carvalho said she was fired from Holland America in February after an employee told her about an allegation that a captain was covering up unprofessional behavior from subordinates. Carvalho intended to investigate the allegation to determine if it had merit, but before she could do so, her supervisor, a human-resources manager from Holland America's corporate offices, told the captain about the planned investigation, Carvalho said. The supervisor then accused her of creating false time sheets and having poor English skills, and fired her, she said. </p><p>"Captains, they hate my position on board because we are the only ones that can stop them doing stupid things," she said. "The captains really believe they are the owners of that ship, so it's impossible to fight that."</p><p>Holland America Line did not respond to multiple requests for comment.</p><p>A former photographer for Royal Caribbean, who is from Colombia said she felt as if officers treated each other with more respect than the workers they supervised. The former Royal Caribbean photographer, who worked for the cruise line from 2016 until June 2018, said one of her managers would comment on her sexual orientation and tell her he didn't like that she wore the same hairstyle every day.</p><p>"Whenever it comes to an officer or a manager, they like to treat each other with respect. But if you're not a manager or an officer, they just see you as their slave," she said. </p><p>Royal Caribbean Cruises did not comment on the specifics of the former photographer's account, but a representative for the company said it "has zero tolerance for any form of discrimination or retaliation, and our employees are encouraged to report such conduct to management on the ships or to management at our headquarters."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><p>Crew and lower-paid staff members were not the only ones who said there were differences in how officers and crew members are treated.</p><p>A former assistant food and beverage manager who is from Britain and worked for the Carnival subsidiary Princess Cruises between 2011 and 2013 was surprised by the working conditions of employees from developing countries like the Philippines, India, and Mexico, including their daily schedules, the length of their contracts, and the fact that they were not allowed on the ship's upper deck.</p><p>"Being an officer, I had it quite good, but I was shocked at the way the other employees were treated," he said.</p><p>Before they can serve passengers, some crew members, like cleaning staff, serve the ship's employees during their training period, the former assistant food and beverage manager said. He noticed that some staff members and officers would have crew members who were in training run personal errands for them, like picking up laundry, food, or alcohol.</p><p>"They're almost like slaves who live on these minuscule tips by the officers," he said. "It feels really colonial."</p><p>A representative for Carnival Corp., which owns Princess Cruises, said Princess Cruises' company culture has led over 10,000 employees to spend more than a decade working for the cruise line. Like other companies, Princess Cruises gives different benefits to employees based on their ranks, not their home countries, the representative said.</p><p><em>Have you worked on a cruise ship? There's a strict hierarchy on cruise ships that creates a huge gap between the highest and lowest-paid workers. Many of those at the bottom make less than $20,000 per year.

The president has said this would preserve jobs and raise wages - claims <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/03/us/politics/legal-immigration-jobs-economy.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">that are</a> widely <a href="http://money.cnn.com/2017/08/10/news/economy/trump-immigration-jobs/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">disputed</a>.</p><p>Temporary Protected Status for Salvadorans will not expire until September 2019, giving people with that status in the US 18 months to apply for a new immigration status or leave the country voluntarily.</p><p>But during implimentation and afterward, uprooting thousands of Salvadorans and their families is likely to create drag on the economy in US and in El Salvador.</p><h2>'Security is still bad. The economy is bad. Its [GDP is] growing roughly 2.5% a year," Mike Allison, a political-science professor at the University of Scranton, told Business Insider. "Unemployment's high. Jobs aren't well-paying. There's very few protections for workers."</p><p>Salvadorans depend heavily on remittances - 382,734 households received them in 2016, <a href="https://apnews.com/4f04da511f204c36a753922a6bf7f520" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to a government survey, and 97% are sent <a href="http://www.elsalvadorperspectives.com/2017/12/family-remittances-strong-in-2017-but.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">from the US</a>. The more than $4.5 billion in remittances received in 2016 amounted were used to pay for things like rent, school fees and transportation costs, and utility bills.</p><p>Any decline in remittances caused by deportations or removals from the US would reduce consumption and increase poverty in El Salvador, Carmen Aida Lazo, of ESEN University in San Salvador, <a href="https://www.economist.com/news/americas/21734477-united-states-wants-expel-up-200000-salvadoreans-both-they-and-their-home-country" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> The Economist.</p><p>Many of the conditions created by the 2001 earthquake that first prompted the TPS designation for immigrants from El Salvador haven't really improved, Allison said.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Jose Cabezas</span></p><p class="caption">Salvadoran policemen arrest two suspected gang members during an anti-gang search operation in San Salvador, June 21, 2015.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>"Security is still bad. The economy is bad. Corruption is bad. What's helped the country sort of stay afloat has been the billions of dollars sent back each year by Salvadorans living abroad," he told Business Insider.</p><p>"The situation in El Salvador today probably will not be any better in 18 months. If anything it'll probably get a little worse."</p><p>The absence of Salvadorans in the US sending money back to El Salvador would likely be compounded by the strain their return would put on the government and the local economy.</p><p>The official unemployment rate in El Salvador is 7%, but <a href="https://www.economist.com/news/americas/21734477-united-states-wants-expel-up-200000-salvadoreans-both-they-and-their-home-country" target="_blank" rel="noopener">more than 40%</a> of workers are underemployed, and about 66% of them work in the informal sector. The country sees 60,000 people enter the workforce every year, but its economy only creates 11,000 jobs, according to think tank Fusades.</p><p>"So the thought that these people are going to be successfully absorbed by the Salvadoran economy is fantastical," Geoff Thale, program director at the Washington Office on Latin America, told Business Insider.</p><p>"Whatever the administration says about conditions in El Salvador [having] improved - I don't actually think they have - but it's clear to me that even if they were to have improved, they haven't improved to the condition where the country can accept back that number of people and absorb them into the workforce," Thale said.</p><h2>'What they'll probably do is displace other Salvadorans'</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Thomson Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">Deportees wait to be processed at an immigration facility after a flight carrying unauthorized immigrants from the US arrived in San Salvador, January 11, 2018.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The US and Salvadoran governments have <a href="https://www.economist.com/news/americas/21734477-united-states-wants-expel-up-200000-salvadoreans-both-they-and-their-home-country" target="_blank" rel="noopener">an agreement</a> that limits the number of deportation flights to eight a week, each carrying no more than 135 people.</p><p>Under the deal, the US can't send more than 56,000 people back to El Salvador each year. A significant increase in the number returnees would further strain the limited resources the government and civil-society groups have to assist people arriving in the country, many of whom haven't been there in more than a decade.</p><p>Salvadoran TPS holders in the US are typically in their 40s and are used to wages higher than are offered in El Salvador, and many who return are likely to struggle to find work and settle there. Ones who do enter the labor force in El Salvador may take jobs that are already filled, Thale said.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Jose Cabezas/Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">Rosa Amelia Mejia Reyes, 35, a newspaper seller in San Salvador.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>"While they occupy relative low-skilled jobs in the United States, in El Salvador they would look like mostly bilingual, relatively skilled workers," Thale told Business Insider.</p><p>"What they'll probably do is displace other Salvadorans, and those people, who are less skilled and ... pushed out of the workforce in a terrible economy with ... a lot of crime and violence, will probably emigrate to the United States."</p><p>The government in El Salvador is looking for a way to relieve the pressure. It is discussing <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-elsalvador-immigration-qatar/el-salvador-eyes-work-scheme-with-qatar-for-migrants-facing-exit-from-u-s-idUSKBN1F606Q?feedType=RSS&amp;feedName=worldNews" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a deal with Qatar</a> under which migrants from the Central American country who lose the right to live in the US could live and work temporarily in the Middle Eastern country.</p><p>El Salvador's foreign minister said Salvadorans in Qatar could work in engineering, aircraft maintenance, construction, and agriculture.</p><p><span>Salvadorans removed from the US may also find work at call centers, which have sprung up in El Salvador in recent years. With <a href="http://www.elsalvadorperspectives.com/2018/01/with-few-local-english-speakers-call.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">few local English speakers</a> in the country, returnees with language skills would stand out. Ninety percent of them have jobs, and one-third own homes.</span></p><p><span>Many, if not most, of them are likely to try to stay in the country, either by securing a new immigration status or by staying without authorization. But without legal status, the role they play in the US economy, and the protections they have while working, will be stripped away.</span></p><p>"I think they're going to wind up living in illegality here, which will make them more exposed to abuse by employers, make them live more in fear, make them far less likely to cooperate with local police," Thale told Business Insider. "In those communities, in terms of employment, in terms of schools, in terms of people paying their mortgages, there will be economic ripple effects."</p><p>Immigrants in the US - Haitians and others from Central America, in particular - often make their living in the US in the service industry, doing jobs in industries like construction, food service, and child and elderly care.</p><p><span>"If you get rid of 26% of my employees, I guess I'm going to have to terminate some of the contracts," Victor Moran, the chief executive of Total Quality, a janitorial services company in the Washington area, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/09/us/immigrant-work-force-salvadorans-haitians.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> The New York Times. </span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Thomson Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">Migrants at a workshop for legal advice following the US government's announcement it would step up deportations of Central American families that have arrived since May 2014, in Chicago, January 10, 2016.</p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span>Moran said he wasn't willing to break the <keyword id="6355470" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Law">law</keyword> to keep those employees, and the government's recent <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ap-apnewsbreak-7-eleven-probe-opens-new-front-on-immigration-2018-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">nationwide sweep of 7-11</a> convenience stores indicates the measures it will take to restrict the hiring of undocumented workers.</span></p><p><span>"There are no Americans out there to take the jobs," Mark Drury, a vice president at a Washington-based plumbing, heating, and cooling business, told The Times</span></p><p><span>Drury said his firm would have to lay off its 14 Salvadoran workers and was worried about what would happen to some 30 employees who are in the US under Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, which protects immigrants brought to the US as children from deportation.</span></p><p><span>Businesses in Houston have expressed concern about immigration restrictions inhibiting the effort to rebuild after Hurricane Harvey.</span></p><p><span>A <a href="https://www.ilrc.org/sites/default/files/resources/2017-04-18_economic_contributions_by_salvadoran_honduran_and_haitian_tps_holders.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">study</a> by the Immigrant Legal Resource Center found that stripping Haitians, Salvadorans, and Hondurans - who may see their TPS status rescinded this summer - would, over 10 years, deprive Social Security and Medicare of $6.9 billion and shrink GDP by $45.2 billion.</span></p><p><span>The wholesale firing of TPS holders from those three countries would hit US employers with almost a billion dollars in turnover costs, and deporting them would cost the US $3.1 billion, with an outsize effect on metropolitan areas in Florida, New York, California, Texas, Maryland, and Virginia, according to the report.</span></p><p>"This policy [is] probably going to worsen poverty and the conditions in El Salvador, but it's also going to do the same thing in the United States," Allison, of the University of Scranton, told Business Insider. "If you end up deporting or taking away the legal status of 200,000 people, they're going to lose the good-paying jobs that they have right now."</p><p>"You've removed thousands of fully employed people," Allison said.
