The Times Now-VMR exit poll forecasts that the AIADMK and the BJP alliance in the state will get only 9 seats which is down from the 37 seats won by the AIADMK in 2014. The Lok Sabha elections 2019 is the first time the two major parties in the state of Tamil Nadu namely DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) and AIADMK (All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) go for Lok Sabha polls without their iconic leaders Karunanidhi and Jayalalitha. In 2014 elections, the AIADMK scored 37 out of 39 Lok Sabha seats. The overwhelming performance of the party was a talk of the country since the party emerged as one of the largest parties in the Lok Sabha in opposition. The national party of Congress had secured only 44 seats in total all over the nation, which was just 7 seats more than those scored by the AIADMK, which contested only from Tamil Nadu Lok Sabha constituencies. In 2009 Lok Sabha elections, the AIADMK has scored 9 parliamentary seats from the state. Before the party got a thumping victory in 2014 Lok Sabha elections, it showed a poor performance over the Lok Sabha elections 1999, 2004 and 2009. The AIADMK split into two after the demise of its heroic leader Jayalalithaa. In 2019, the party is contesting the Lok Sabha elections in alliance with the national party BJP, and other regional parties like PMK and DMDK. After a series of twists and turns in the history of AIADMK in Tamil Nadu after the death of Jayalalitha, K Palaniswami of the party was elected as the general secretary and hence became the CM. The main opponent for the party in Tamil Nadu is DMK. The other two parties in the fray in Lok Sabha elections 2019 are AMMK of TTV Dhinkaran and MNM of Kamal Haasan.

Jayalalithaa’s confidant VK <keyword id="6358664" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sasikala">Sasikala</keyword> has been unanimously elected as her successor and will take over as General Secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). 
 
Sasikala, a close friend and confidant of Jayalalithaa, was chosen to head the party. 
 
Reportedly, the General Council body of AIADMK passed the resolution to elect Sasikala Natarajan as the General Secretary almost unanimously. However there were few dissent notes as well. The post fell vacant following the demise of party general secretary and Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa on December 5. 
 
The meeting was attended by over 2000 party workers, but Sasikala wasn’t present there. 
 
Yesterday, clashes broke out between AIADMK workers and supporters of Rajya Sabha member Sasikala Pushpa outside the ruling party's office in Chennai. 
 
Sasikala Pushpa had earlier expressed her wish to contest for the party's general secretary post. Sasikala was expelled from the AIADMK sometime back but did not resign from the Rajya Sabha.

Tamil Nadu polls: DMK leads in 38 seats while AIADMK leads in 35 constituencies

Former Chief Minister of <keyword id="20154" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tamil-Nadu" source="Orion">Tamil Nadu</keyword> and AIADMK Coordinator O.Panneerselvam on Wednesday condemned the DMK government for deciding to close down kindergarten classes in the <keyword id="65626" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Government-schools" source="Orion">government schools</keyword>. Panneerselvam said the AIADMK government in order to attract more children to the government schools had started lower and upper kindergarten classes. The poor people admitted their children to the government schools instead of private ones that charge high fees, he added. According to him, the DMK government is paving the way for the government school students to go to the private institutions and enable the latter to flourish. Such an action is against social justice and it seems the DMK is terming these as <keyword id="13233124" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dravidian-Model" source="Orion">Dravidian Model</keyword>, the AIADMK leader added. He urged Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to intervene in the matter so that the status quo was restored in the government schools. After J. Jailalithaa’s death, <keyword id="41902" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="AIADMK">AIADMK</keyword> is witnessing a hard time and this the second time in nearly three decades the party is facing such big challenge. The party had earlier plunged into turmoil following the death of its founder, M G Ramachandran (MGR). 
 
Jayalalithaa, 68, who died on Monday, ran the party single-handedly. She left no successor that can match her calibre. The party is facing a huge problem of finding a widely accepted interim leader, who will hold it together. With the party supremo dead, AIADMK workers are rudderless. 
 Disappointment was seen on the faces of cadres, even as ministers and elected representatives zipped past the bylanes of Greams Road where <keyword id="56368" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Apollo-Hospitals">Apollo Hospitals</keyword> is located, and the party headquarters on Lloyds Road. 
 "We saw our Puratchi Thalaivar in her. She was our <keyword id="6383069" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="AMMA">Amma</keyword> and there was none parallel to her," said R Valli Raju, a party functionary from Alandur, who's been camping near Apollo Hospitals since Sunday night. 
 Political analyst <keyword id="3925800" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="n-sathyamoorthy">N Sathyamoorthy</keyword> said that for the party to stay united and strengthen itself, it has to be through a presidium of sub-regional leaders. "If anyone tries to outsmart the other, it would only lead to disintegration, as happened immediately after MGR," he said.
