Agnipath protests simmer down, 94,000 applications received in 4 days

China is worried over India’s successful test of Agni-V intercontinental ballistic missile and is planning to drag the issue to <keyword id="6355833" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="united-nations">United Nations</keyword> Security Council. Responding to it, India said its strategic capabilities were not targeted against any particular country and while it abides by all applicable international obligations, it expects others to do the same.

 Earlier, Chinese Foreign Ministry said it hoped that India's test-firing of the nuclear-capable Agni-V intercontinental ballistic missile or ICBM, that could cover all of China, complied with <keyword id="55859" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="UN-Security-Council">UN Security Council</keyword> rules and safeguarded <keyword id="52011" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="South-Asia">South Asia</keyword>'s strategic balance.

Agni-V was successfully test-fired recently. It is the country's most lethal nuclear-capable inter-continental ballistic missile with a range of over 5,000 km that covers entire China which may also pave the way for user trial of the weapons system and its eventual induction into the Strategic Forces Command (SFC).

India gives befitting reply to China after it questioned Agni-V missile test

<ul><li>An <keyword id="2125307" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="assessee" source="Orion">assessee</keyword> filing <keyword id="3429498" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="itr-1" source="Orion">ITR 1</keyword> is only required to indicate his choice of tax regime in the return of income. </li><li>An assessee filing <keyword id="3348920" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="itr-4" source="Orion">ITR 4</keyword> will be required to file Form 10-IEA to opt out of the new tax regime. </li><li>ITR forms 1 and 4 have been amended to include a column to furnish the amount eligible for deduction under section 80CCH.</li></ul>The <keyword id="121964" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="central-board-of-direct-taxes" source="Orion">Central Board of Direct Taxes</keyword> (CBDT) has revealed the Income Tax Return (ITR) Forms 1 and 4 for Assessment Year 2024-25. These forms apply to filing income tax returns for earnings in the previous year 2023-24 (from 01-04-2023 to 31-03-2024). “The department usually notifies the <keyword id="1156749" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="itr-form" source="Orion">ITR form</keyword> before the start of the subsequent assessment year, i.e. in February or March. An early notification of ITR forms not only extends the window for filing returns but also signifies a proactive stride towards empowering taxpayers,” says Abhishek Soni, CEO, Tax2Win.in, a tax filing platform. The CBDT has not amended Rule 12 of the Income-tax Rules, 1962, which outlines the criteria for the applicability of ITR forms to different classes of taxpayers and method of furnishing returns. The ITR 1 is for individuals with income up to ₹50 lakh from salary, pension, one house property, interest, and agricultural income (up to ₹5000). ITR 4 is for individuals and Hindu Undivided Families with income up to ₹50 lakh, who use the presumptive income scheme for businesses or professions, and additionally have income from salary, pension, one house property, and other sources (excluding lottery and horse races). Tax payers must opt out to choose old regime The Finance Act 2023 has revised section 115BAC, making it the default tax structure for individuals. If an assessee prefers not to follow the new tax system, they must explicitly opt out and choose to be taxed under the previous regime. Section 115BAC(6) provides an avenue for eligible assesses to opt out of the new tax scheme. To exercise this choice, individuals with income (excluding earnings from a business or profession) need to specify their preferred tax structure in the income tax return for the relevant assessment period. A taxpayer earning from a business or profession also has the choice to exit the new tax structure and revert to the previous tax system for a specific year. To exercise this choice, they must utilise Form No. 10-IEA on or before the filing deadline specified under Section 139(1) for submitting the income tax return. “In simple words, an assessee filing ITR 1 is only required to indicate his choice of tax regime in the return of income. An assessee filing ITR 4 will be required to file Form 10-IEA to opt out of the new tax regime,” says Naveen Wadhwa, deputy general manager at Taxmann, an online source of tax and law-related information. New column added to claim deduction under Section 80CCH The Finance Act 2023 added a new Section 80CCH, which states that individuals enrolled in the Agnipath Scheme and subscribing to the Agniveer Corpus Fund on or after 01-11-2022 will be eligible for a tax deduction for the total amount deposited in the Agniveer Corpus Fund. “ITR forms 1 and 4 have been amended to include a column to furnish the amount eligible for deduction under section 80CCH,” says Wadhwa. "Receipts in Cash" column added to ITR-4 to claim enhanced turnover limit The Finance Act, 2023 has enhanced the turnover threshold limit from ₹2 crores to ₹3 crores for opting for the presumptive taxation scheme under Section 44AD if the receipts in cash do not exceed 5% of the total turnover or gross receipts for the previous year. It is also provided that the meaning of cash would include the cheque or a bank draft, which is not an account payee. Similarly, Section 44ADA was amended to enhance the threshold limit of gross receipts from ₹50 lakhs to ₹75 lakhs, if the receipts in cash do not exceed 5% of the total gross receipts for the previous year. “To give effect to the above amendments, the CBDT has amended ITR-4 to include a new column of "receipts in cash” for disclosing cash turnover or cash gross receipt,” says Wadhwa. These changes can pave the way for improved and more accurate tax submissions, elevating the compliance process for both individuals and entities.

There are many inherited disorders caused by a faulty gene. 'Gene Therapy' is a way to replace the faulty gene with a functional version of the gene to treat such disorders. This marks the first time that a gene therapy related technology has been developed and transferred from an academic institution to a company in India. The gene therapy technology from IIT Kanpur will be further developed as an Indigenous Product by Reliance Life Sciences, said an official release from IIT-K. Developed by Prof Jayandharan <keyword id="16753139" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="giridhara-rao" source="Orion">Giridhara Rao</keyword> and <keyword id="4120902" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="shubham-maurya" source="Orion">Shubham Maurya</keyword> from the Department of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering (BSBE), IIT Kanpur, the patented technology modifies the gene of an organism to treat a hereditary disorder. In this case, the site refers to a specific location on an Adeno-associated virus (AAV) (viral vector) used for gene therapy. The technology modifies this location to optimize its ability to deliver genes to the affected cells and improve its effectiveness. The technology has the ability to improve gene therapy for many hereditary diseases, especially inherited eye diseases. It has shown significant promise in correcting the vision impairment in animal models of blindness. <keyword id="9701732" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="prof-abhay-karandikar" source="Orion">Prof Abhay Karandikar</keyword>, Director of IIT Kanpur, said, "Gene therapy using viral vectors has recently emerged as a potent tool in the field of molecular medicine. We believe that this technology holds great promise for treating a wide range of hereditary eye diseases including Leber congenital amaurosis, an eye disorder that is present from birth; and Retinitis pigmentosa, a disease causing progressive sustained vision loss." Gene therapy is one of the most potent applications of recombinant DNA technology wherein pieces of DNA from multiple sources are combined to efficiently deliver the healthy copy of the faulty gene in a manner that production of protein from the introduced gene is sustained for life. To enable this, the therapeutic DNA molecule is delivered using a virus that can infect human cells. For successful clinical application, several optimizations of the basic process is needed aimed at ensuring adequate expression of the desired gene.
