Unfortunately, I didn't quite grasp how expensive it is to live there until I was much older. </p><p>A lot of people live with roommates or move to boroughs <a href="https://www.insider.com/places-to-visit-in-new-york-travel-ideas-2019-2">other than Manhattan</a>, like Brooklyn or Queens, to save money. But I wanted to be in the center of the action and live alone.</p><p>I found my solution on the internet: a <a href="https://www.insider.com/red-flags-signing-a-lease-2018-7">micro-studio apartment</a>. In NYC, these spaces are often between 50 and 100 square feet and make living alone somewhat affordable.</p><p>I found my 72-square-foot apartment in the West Village for $1,345 a month. It's in my favorite part of the city, has a fire escape, and the perfect amount of space for a 21-year-old college graduate.</p><p>Here's what <a href="https://www.insider.com/new-york-city-biggest-misconceptions-2019-8">a day of my life is like</a> in this tiny space:</p><h2><strong>As soon as I wake up, I turn my bed back into my couch </strong></h2><p>I sleep on a futon bed, so when I wake up, I put my pillow and comforter under the frame and turn my bed back into a couch. This is annoying to do when I first wake up, but it certainly forces me to get out of bed.</p><p>I briefly considered putting a twin-size mattress in my lofted storage area instead, but I'm not positive it can support my weight and terrified to roll off in the night. </p><h2><strong>Then I work on using my space to make fresh coffee and breakfast </strong></h2><p>My tiny space does not mean I sacrifice my coffee.</p><p>I stand on top of my fridge to reach the coffee beans and get my electric water heater and bean grinder out from under my sink, since there's no room for it on the counter. </p><div type="image" title="kitchen+bathroomdoor" height="3024" width="4032" msid="83158018" hostid="261"></div><p>After I make my coffee, I put all the tools and ingredients away so I have room on the counter to make breakfast.</p><p>For breakfast, I usually cook eggs on my hot plate while I make toast in my <a href="https://www.insider.com/trying-to-make-popular-fast-food-recipes-in-air-fryer-2021-5">toaster-oven-air-fryer combo</a>.</p><p>After breakfast, I have to do all of my dishes immediately, or my sink won't fit anything else.</p><h2><strong>Picking out my outfit can be challenging since my clothes are stored throughout the apartment</strong></h2><p>Picking out my outfit requires a few stops around my studio.</p><p>I keep my pajamas, underwear, bras, socks, bathing suits, and accessories in bins underneath my two-bar garment rack.</p><p>My clothes are color-coded, and all of my black and white clothes are on the rack facing the wall, so I have to dig a bit to see what's back there.</p><div type="image" title="closet" height="3024" width="4032" msid="83158021" hostid="261"></div><p>Some of my shoes and purses are displayed on the wall, which <a href="https://www.insider.com/cheap-ways-to-decorate-apartment-2018-8">gives me extra storage and turns them into decor</a>.</p><p>When it comes to laundry, I pay to have it washed, dried, and folded, since I don't have a washer or dryer. </p><p>My hamper is in the storage loft above my kitchen. When I need to put clothes in it, I either try throwing them in the hamper (and always miss) or climb on top of my counter so I can reach.</p><div type="image" title="loftarea" height="3024" width="4032" msid="83158024" hostid="261"></div><p>Living in my studio is mostly me climbing onto surfaces that are probably not meant to be climbed on. Every small task is now a bit of a challenge to complete.</p><h2><strong>I do my skin-care routine in my bathroom, but I put on my makeup in the main area so I have more space </strong></h2><p>Like with everything else I do in this apartment, my skin-care routine takes longer than it would in a larger space. My bathroom sink is super small, and I have no counter space in there, so it can be a process to wash my face.</p><p>I do my makeup in my main living area and place my products on the kitchen counter while using the mirror by my front door.</p><div type="image" title="aerialview" height="3024" width="4032" msid="83158026" hostid="261"></div><p>I occasionally have to peek in my bathroom to see my look in better light, but for the most part, this works well. </p><h2><strong>During the day, I can easily walk to the park and enjoy the fresh air </strong></h2><p>After this, depending on what my schedule looks like, I am usually out and about for most of the day. </p><p>When the weather is nice, I love sitting in Washington Square Park, which is so close to my apartment that it feels like my backyard. I love living near so many <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-restaurants-chefs-eat-at-in-nyc-2019-4">amazing restaurants</a>, too.</p><div type="image" title="fireescapeview" height="863" width="1151" msid="83158029" hostid="261"></div><p>My fire escape also has killer views of the West Village, so it's nice to pop out there sometimes.</p><h2><strong>It's challenging to make dinner and have guests over, but I make it work with a microwave and floor pillows</strong></h2><p>Preparing too many elements that have to be cooked in the same appliance can turn making dinner into a challenging and lengthy process.</p><p>I usually <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-way-to-make-corn-in-air-fryer-tiktok-hack-review">air-fry a vegetable</a> and make pasta or a protein with my hot plate. Sometimes, I microwave <a href="https://www.insider.com/trying-fan-favorite-trader-joes-food-review">a Trader Joe's meal</a>, make a salad, or eat a light snack like fruit or cheese and crackers.</p><p>On some nights, I have my two friends who live downstairs over, but we mostly go to their space, which is bigger. When I do host guests, about three people can comfortably fit on my couch, and I keep two floor pillows under the futon for people to sit on the floor.</p><p>If it starts to feel crowded in my apartment, we hit the park or the streets of NYC.</p><p>Otherwise, I will usually have a virtual movie night with my best friend from back home. I don't have a TV, so I will play a movie on my computer and prop it up on the table beside my couch.</p><h2><strong>Taking a shower can be frustrating because the floor always gets wet</strong></h2><p>My entire bathroom is the shower, which is sometimes nice and sometimes the worst.</p><p>I usually end the day with a shower so my floor has time to dry overnight. If I shower in the morning, my bathroom floor is wet until midafternoon. </p><div type="image" title="Bathroom" height="4032" width="3024" msid="83158031" hostid="261"></div><p>A perk, though, is that I can easily brush my teeth and do my skin-care routine in the shower at night. I can also use my mirror while brushing my hair in the shower.</p><p>When I play music in there, the entire room becomes an echo-y speaker, making for great shower concerts. I also have a little mat outside the bathroom so that no water gets in my apartment.</p><p>I expected to hate the shower-bathroom combo, but now I kind of love it.</p><h2><strong>The noise of the city can be annoying when I'm trying to go to sleep, so I play music or use earplugs</strong></h2><p>When it gets <a href="https://www.insider.com/ways-youre-ruining-your-sleep-2019-5">close to bedtime</a>, I always plug in my air conditioner, as it is a great buffer for all the street noise. I also play some music. If the noise gets really bad, I use earplugs.</p><p>I <a href="https://www.insider.com/things-to-help-you-sleep-better-2019-3">finish my evening</a> by taking melatonin to help me sleep, putting rain sounds on my speaker, and pulling my futon back into a bed.</p><h2><strong>Overall, I like my microstudio, and it's come with a few perks</strong></h2><p>At the end of the day, this is by no means the <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-an-apartment-with-no-kitchen-is-really-like-2020-4">perfect apartment</a>. Someday, I would love to have a living room for parties, a full fridge, a closet, more counter space, and so much more.</p><p>But the small space has its perks. I've learned what items I value enough to be a part of my space and how crucial decor can be in making an apartment feel like a home.</p><p>Plus, this apartment has allowed me to live in the center of NYC, which was a priority for me. But Darren Goldin and his brother saw they could be used to create a new source of sustainable and nutritious food.</p><p><strong>Darren</strong>: Just reimagining how we can feed a population of 9 or 10 billion people on an overcrowded planet.</p><p><strong>Narrator</strong>: Now they harvest about 50 million crickets a week, and they're aiming to triple production within the year.</p><p><strong>Darren</strong>: The trickiest thing is that there's no real manual in terms of this kind of scale and density. There's no manual. It's figure it out as you go. Nobody's ever done free-range cricket farming on this kind of a scale before.</p><p><strong>Narrator</strong>: It all starts here, where the crew covers boards with a mixture of damp soil and peat moss. Making mud pies.</p><p><strong>Narrator</strong>: And the pregnant females flock to lay their eggs. It may look like just dirt and some grains of rice, but actually ...</p><p><strong>Darren</strong>: There's probably thousands and thousands of cricket eggs in there.</p><p><strong>Narrator</strong>: And in this room, about 15 million eggs. Of the 900 different species Darren could choose from, he chose the tropical house cricket because of its simple feed requirements.</p><p><strong>Darren</strong>: It's a cricket that does well in high densities, grows really fast, and is a super delicious cricket.</p><p><strong>Narrator</strong>: Every single part of this cricket is edible. Plus they have nutrients like fiber, iron, and calcium. After roughly nine days, the eggs hatch, and they'll hang in the nursery for about two weeks.</p><p><strong>Darren</strong>: Crickets definitely require a nice, warm environment, being cold-blooded animals, and their metabolism is controlled by temperature. So if you keep them on the warmer end of their preferred temperature, they grow faster. And then once they're big enough and ready to handle life in the big grow room, then we transfer them from the nursery into the grow room.</p><p><strong>Narrator</strong>: It only takes a crew of five to maintain this colony of millions. The crickets here eat a mixture of corn, soy, and some flax. On average, the crickets dine on almost 1,000 pounds of feed a day.</p><p><strong>Darren</strong>: That's often staggering for people, because you think of crickets as such tiny little animals. But of course, when you've got 10 or 15 million of them, they consume a fair amount of feed.</p><p><strong>Narrator</strong>: To put it in human terms, 15 million crickets is nearly twice the population of New York City. But growing all these crickets is still more sustainable than farming pigs, poultry, or cattle. To produce just 1 kilogram of cow meat takes a staggering 22,000 liters of water. And to produce that same amount of protein from a cricket, only a few hundred liters. Growing crickets also has other advantages.</p><p><strong>Darren</strong>: So one of the interesting things about insects is that there's very, very few diseases that are transferable from insects to humans, which is very different from farming mammals or chickens. And crickets do not have any known viruses, or the species that we produce has no known viruses that can affect them. And of course, certainly no zoonotic viruses, or viruses that can cross species.</p><p><strong>Narrator</strong>: These three Entomo barns can produce 9,000 pounds of protein a week, enough to fill the daily protein requirements of 80,000 people.</p><p><strong>Lauren</strong>: By and large, most of our customers, they're integrating it into a finished good, like a dog kibble, a dog treat, or selling it as cricket powder under a different brand, or putting it in something like a super food smoothie mix, baking it into other baked goods and other snacks.</p><p><strong>Narrator</strong>: Even their poop is a usable product.</p><p><strong>Darren</strong>: And as you can see, the floor is covered with cricket manure.</p><p><strong>Narrator</strong>: It's called frass, and it's a great fertilizer. The farm can produce about 6,000 pounds of manure per harvest. These crickets will live out their full life span before they're turned into food.</p><p><strong>Darren</strong>: So from the time an egg hatches to harvest is about six weeks. The big difference is that at six weeks, a cricket is fully mature, it's lived out its life, it's bred and laid eggs for us, and essentially it would be dying within a few days anyway.</p><p><strong>Narrator</strong>: And now it's time to see them turned into food.</p><p><strong>Kate McInnes</strong>: So this is our raw receiving room. All of the crickets come in from the farm.</p><p><strong>Narrator</strong>: The insects are rinsed, then sorted to make sure there's no debris from the farm in the mix. Next, they're evenly spread onto trays and slipped into ovens to roast.</p><p><strong>Kate</strong>: So in order to make the powder the moisture has to be below a certain percentage. We find that if it's above that percentage. We find that if it's above that percentage it's really difficult to grind it.</p><p><strong>Narrator</strong>: While some are left whole and sent for seasoning and packaging, the majority will go into this industrial grinder until they look like coffee.</p><p><strong>Kate</strong>: We do a quick 30-second blitz to break it up.</p><p><strong>Narrator</strong>: It's then manually packed into boxes of 25 pounds each. Every day, they turn 15,000 crickets into 500 pounds of powder.</p><p><strong>Darren</strong>: The secret sauce is really in the metrics. It's in exactly how your setup is done, your ratio of eggs, surface area of feed. And it's kind of like a big giant recipe, and everything does have to be perfect for it to function the way that we function.</p><p><strong>Narrator</strong>: But there is still room for improvement. Right now, the process of Entomo Farms is mostly manual, and that's going to need to change if they want to ramp up production.</p><p><strong>Kate</strong>: And so we're looking at more automated solutions, which will allow us to actually produce three to four times what we are capable of doing now.</p><p><strong>Narrator</strong>: Entomo Farms hopes this will bring costs down and make their products more affordable. Cricket flour sells for roughly $12 for every four ounces, which is 45 times the price of all-purpose flour. But it's not really the price that's holding back some customers.</p><p><strong>Lauren</strong>: Perception in North America around insects as food is certainly a challenge, and it's one that we are striving to rise up against.</p><p><strong>Narrator</strong>: In Asia, crickets are already a popular food, and Darren is confident the appetite for crickets is only going to grow.</p><p><strong>Darren</strong>: Super exciting thing about insect farming is scale-up is super fast. Each cricket lays 600 eggs or so. And so in a crisis event, if we needed to scale up our production, we can do it really, really fast.</p>

<p>Ellison didn't get into the boat alongside his US Team Oracle as he did in 2010, but as team sponsor and manager he led the team to its second victory in 2013.</p>
<p>That second victory was actually <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/sailing/2013/09/25/oracle-team-usa-beats-new-zealand-americas-cup/2871027/">one of the greatest comebacks in sports history</a>, with Team Oracle USA winning eight races in a row to steal the victory from Team Emirates New Zealand. Ellison made it clear from the beginning that he expected his team to win.</p>
<p>When Team Oracle's crew walked into their training compound each day, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/2013-americas-cup-we-spent-a-day-with-sailing-with-team-oracle-photos-2013-8">they had to pass the hull of Ellison's boat that won the 2010 America's Cup</a>. They did cardio and weight training underneath the boat's sail.With the 35th America's Cup scheduled for sometime in 2017, Ellison has victory in his sights once again, proving that total domination of the sport of elite international yacht racing - from winning the America's Cup to pushing competitors to ditch sailboats for futuristic-looking, advanced vehicles - is a natural extension of his legendary drive to win at all costs.</p>
<h2>A Love Of The Sea</h2>

<p>Ellison enrolled at a sailing course taught at the University of California shortly after he moved to the state in 1966 at the age of 22. At 25, he bought a 34-foot-long racing sloop, a single mast sailboat, according to <a href="http://sailing.about.com/od/advancedsailingcruising/a/LarryEllison.htm">About Sports</a>.</p>

<p>Ellison didn't respond to our request for comment, but he's previously said that,"I was passionate about sailing and the idea of sailing ... the idyllic independence … traveling with the wind."</p>
<p>He had to sell the boat after a few years because he became too busy building his company Software Development Laboratories, founded in 1977. SDL eventually adopted the name of its flagship Oracle product in 1982. Oracle went public in 1986, making Ellison $93 million from his 39% stake in the company.</p>
<p>The popularity of Ellison's enterprise software company allowed him to grow his fortune exponentially. Today, Ellison is 70 years old and worth an estimated $48.7 billion, according to Forbes, making him the fifth richest man in the world.</p>
<p>His fortune has allowed Ellison the chance to not only <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/tour-of-lanai-larry-ellisons-hawaiian-island-2014-10">buy a Hawaiian island</a>, fighter jet, Bugatti, and luxury yacht, but it also allowed him to get back into sailing.</p>
<h2>"Sayonara"</h2>
<p>In the 1990s, he bought a 78-foot racing sailboat he named Sayonara and started competing at a high level. Ellison's skills as a yachtsman and team leader shined, winning him five Maxi World Championships.</p>

<p>But in 1998, Ellison skippered his boat through a race that was so traumatizing, he swore off open ocean races forever. He won that competition, too, but he told <a href="http://www.couriermail.com.au/news/ellison-says-never-again/story-e6freon6-1111118408085?nk=03344b3b8d284278fda8a984fa84416c">the Courier Mail</a> that he didn't actually "win," but just happened to be the first to survive.</p>
<p>That December, Sayonara and 114 other yacht teams entered the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race off the coast of Australia. A hurricane developed during the race, and only 44 boats made it to Hobart. Twenty-four boats were abandoned and 55 sailors rescued. Six sailors drowned.</p>
<p>Ellison told <a href="http://www.couriermail.com.au/news/ellison-says-never-again/story-e6freon6-1111118408085?nk=03344b3b8d284278fda8a984fa84416c">the Courier Mail</a> in 2008 that he's never forgotten the race. The storm's winds were so powerful that Sayonara was practically flying - but not in a good way. "After what was a beautiful day on Sydney Harbour the wind got more intense and the skies slowly, slowly darkened and I remember after 12 hours we were further ahead than the record holder was in 24 hours," Ellison said.</p>
<p>His brush with death may have gotten him to swear off races on the open ocean, but he was far from ending his love of sailing.</p>
<h2>In Pursuit Of The Cup</h2>
<p>Ellison's next sailing objective was to win the America's Cup, a yacht race founded in 1851, which generally takes place every three or four years. He put together Team Oracle in 2003 and partnered with BMW the next year. In both '03 and '07, Ellison's team lost in the America's Cup qualifying competition, the Louis Vuitton Cup, reaching the finals the first time and the semi-finals the second.</p>

<p>Because Louis Vuitton temporarily ended its affiliation with the America's Cup for the 2010 race, reigning champion Alinghi from Switzerland could choose its challenger. It selected a Spanish club that was determined by a judge to be fraudulent - a new team created solely for the purpose of keeping the Swiss victorious and having Alinghi agree to keep the race, and its tax revenue, in Valencia.</p>
<p>Ellison was the first in the yacht racing community to file a lawsuit against Alinghi, and after a long and complicated court battle, it was determined that BMW Oracle Racing would be Alinghi's official competitor in the America's Cup in a special best out of only three races.</p>
<p>Ellison, in the role of afterguard, led BMW Oracle Racing to two straight wins.</p>

<p>As the challenger, Ellison now had the power to determine where the 34th America's Cup would be held and what boats were going to be used, and by the end of 2010 BMW stopped sponsoring the team, giving Ellison full control. Ellison decided that the races would be held in the San Francisco Bay, and that instead of a traditional catamaran, the teams would compete in AC72s, which look more like Michael Bay's Transformers than a sailboat.</p>
<p>Ellison acted as principal backer and visionary for the team rather than an actual sailor, since these 72-foot-long beasts with 13-story-tall, 3,000-pound wings require elite athletes to operate. The boats require five "grinders" in charge of rapidly operating pulleys, and all 11 sailors need to run and jump across a trampoline-like net from side to side of the boat according to where the wind is blowing. The AC72s reach speeds of nearly 50 mph (compared to closer to 15 mph) and appear to fly over the water.</p>
<p>In his 2013 interview with Charlie Rose, Ellison explained that it was all part of his initiative to revolutionize the sport. "We've got to modernize it. It can't be unchanged since 1851," he said, adding that it will not only keep it exciting but keep it relevant to a younger generation.</p>

<p>Not everyone was convinced. Critics in the sailing community pointed out that a challenger would need to spend $100 million to compete, a price they considered overblown. And in a training accident in the Bay, Swedish team Artemis member <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/othersports/sailing/10048580/Andrew-Simpsons-death-sparks-Americas-Cup-full-investigation-over-sailing-safety-fears.html">Andrew Simpson died when one of the boats capsized</a>.</p>
<p>And then Team Oracle got <a href="http://www.sailingscuttlebutt.com/2013/09/03/international-jury-penalizes-americas-cup-defender/">caught using illegal modifications</a> to their smaller AC45 models they used in the preliminary competition, America's Cup World Series. Two sailors were banned from the America's Cup and Team Oracle started the best of 17 series with negative two points.</p>
<h2>The Need To Win</h2>
<p>By the end of the Cup, <a href="http://www.slate.com/articles/sports/sports_nut/2013/09/america_s_cup_2013_oracle_team_usa_s_billionaire_funded_cheat_tastic_comeback.html">it was hard to notice the controversy preceding it</a> because Team Oracle USA's win over Team Emirates New Zealand was so incredible.</p>

<p>At the start of the twelfth race, Oracle was down 8-1, putting Team Emirates one win away from humiliating Ellison's team on his own turf. And then they won eight races in a row, putting them down in history as achieving <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/sailing/2013/09/25/oracle-team-usa-beats-new-zealand-americas-cup/2871027/">one of the greatest comebacks in all of sports</a>.</p>
<p>It is notable that Team Oracle's tactician for races 6-19 was British Olympian Sir Ben Ainslie, the winningest Olympic sailor of all time. <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/othersports/sailing/ben-ainslie/10333595/Americas-Cup-Ben-Ainslie-is-an-absolutely-ruthless-match-racer.html">The Telegraph's Tom Cary</a> noted that since it's a team sport, it's impossible to measure just how much of an impact Ainslie's expertise had on the team, but it's no denying that his "absolutely ruthless" approach played a major role in the comeback.</p>
<p>"All 11 guys on the boat believed we could do it," skipper Jimmy Spithill <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhGZkuZIjTY&amp;list=UU0gzXt1Ms4WVQ7tyGgjTmqA&amp;index=7">told an America's Cup reporter</a>. "We just wanted it. We knew we could pull it off."</p>
<p>After the win, Ellison hopped on a powerboat and met the team on its ship. "Do you guys know what you just did? You just won the America's Cup!" he told the team, <a href="http://online.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424052702303393804579312803907849782">the Wall Street Journal reports</a>.</p>

<p>After stepping down as Oracle CEO in mid-September, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/oracle-larry-ellison-i-love-my-new-job-2014-9">Ellison as CTO</a> has been more focused on developing and marketing Oracle's cloud computing services.</p>
<p>But when the America's Cup rolls around, his winning addiction will kick into overdrive and his sights will be set on winning race after race - plain and simple.</p>
