<ul class="summary-list"><li>Katie Vasquez landed her first venture capital job at 23 years old.</li><li>She said people who want a career in VC should leverage their network for opportunities.</li></ul>This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Katie Vasquez, a 26-year-old investor at Calibrate Ventures based in Santa Monica, California, on her experience working in venture capital. The following has been edited for length and clarity.I'm an investor at Calibrate Ventures, an early-stage deep-tech <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/venture-capital-us-election-data-contributions-2024-10">venture capital</a> firm.The path that led me here was somewhat unconventional. My educational background is in astrophysics, but I've also dabbled in entrepreneurship and worked in consulting.I eventually got my first <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/venture-capital-jobs-vc-recruiter-tips-interview-2024-11">VC job</a> when I was 23 years old.Though it took me about a year and a half to land my first VC role after finishing college, I'm still on the younger end of professionals in my industry. My advice for other people hoping to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-get-job-venture-capital-no-finance-career-2024-10">get into VC</a> is to leverage your network and stay up to date on the industry.<h2 id="45740239-990a-40e5-995f-6a177e376ce5">I realized academia wasn't for me and eventually pivoted to entrepreneurship</h2>During my teen years, I was fascinated with astrophysics. In 2016, I started my undergrad at Brown University, thinking I would go on to get my Ph.D. and become a scientist.However, I realized the academic path wasn't for me when I spent my freshman year summer working with a theoretical research group and trying to code physics formulas. It helped me realize I'm more drawn to roles where I can work directly with people and see tangible results.During my senior year of college, I was interested in entrepreneurship. A friend and I had talked about <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-start-and-grow-a-business-founders-advice-2023-1">starting a company</a> one day. We brought in a third friend and did just that in our final year.We launched a mobile app that we spent the year developing. I got us into an accelerator and raised some grant capital. In the fall, we talked to a couple of VCs and even pitched <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-aragon-ai-founder-chose-startup-accelerator-neo-over-ycombinator">Y Combinator</a>. It wasn't a very successful venture, but it was a good learning opportunity.<h2 id="f17d28cb-e025-4dde-a7c0-b13aa110d2e2">I secured my first VC job with the help of recruiters</h2>I started working at EY-Parthenon in September 2020, after I'd graduated, as an associate consultant, assisting <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/investing/private-equity-investment">private equity</a> firms in acquiring software and tech companies. This experience provided a great foundation for thinking more about technical due diligence, tech architecture, and strategy, but moving into investing and venture capital felt like the most exciting path.While I was in that role, recruiters reached out to me. I was surprised at first, but I was excited to make the leap. My background in physics, combined with my finance experience at EY-Parthenon and two summer internships at Goldman, gave me a unique blend of technical and financial expertise that helped propel my career.I worked with recruiters to get my first VC position at a firm called MTech Capital in December 2021. I stayed there for two years, but I still had a passion for physics and aerospace I couldn't explore at the firm, which invested in fintech, insurtech, and healthtech. I spoke about this with people in my network in the Los Angeles area, and I was referred to my current role, which I started in January.I'm now an investor at <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.calibratevc.com/">Calibrate Ventures</a> focusing on deep-tech. A typical day includes taking a few pitches, checking with the team on our investment committee, and also working on developing my own role as a thought leader.Since I am early in my career, I am always looking to learn about every part of the business, so I ask a lot of questions and listen to my team, founders and mentors. I'm like a sponge.I'm on the younger end of the professionals in my industry, but after three years I don't think I'm the youngest anymore.I feel fortunate that the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/most-important-venture-capitalists-investors-in-los-angeles-2023-1">LA venture community</a> is vibrant and supportive. There are many young investors and a growing number of women in the field. I even recently moderated a panel at LA Tech Week and also launched a deep tech brunch series.Additionally, getting involved in the community and being part of different professional groups, such as Synergist Network, which is for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/these-are-the-best-female-early-stage-investors-2024-9">women in investing</a>, is helpful in creating a sense of community and support.Even though I'm younger in the industry, I've never felt belittled — everyone has always been very respectful.<h2 id="2dc982de-9e21-4df2-91a8-35047a1c40f4">People who want a career in VC should stay up-to-date on the industry and leverage their network</h2>For those interested in a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/landed-dream-job-vc-after-offering-set-up-payroll-free-2024-10">career in VC</a>, I think the best thing you can do is stay as up-to-date on the industry as possible — whether it's through podcasts, newsletters, books, or social media.I spend a lot of my time now reading and keeping up with scientists on social media to stay ahead of rapidly emerging technologies.Even before I was in my current role, I took time to learn more about the industries I was interested in. For instance, while I was primarily focused on fintech in my first VC role, I still sought out deep tech exposure and attended a Space Investor Summit in LA, which allowed me to connect with satellite insurance companies leveraging space observation data.I also recommend leveraging your network — even if it's somebody you went to school with a couple of years ago, ask them if they have anyone they can introduce you to and just pick people's brains by asking questions about their career.If you want to be in this kind of industry, let people know what kinds of opportunities you're looking for. That way, people can let you know if they see a job posting that would be a fit for you. Having mentors through your network can also be helpful for identifying if a career path or role is right for you.I'm committed to staying in VC for the rest of my career. The report stated that the <keyword id="20861069" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-shift" source="keywords">global shift</keyword> towards a China+1 strategy and the impact of the <keyword id="20016971" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Russia-Ukraine-war" source="keywords">Russia-Ukraine war</keyword> offer India additional opportunities to fill supply chain gaps, potentially boosting its share in the <keyword id="23046732" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-defence-industry" source="keywords">global defence industry</keyword>. The report noted that the country's long-term goal is to become a global defence manufacturing hub is driven by Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs), private enterprises, start-ups, and MSMEs. "Indian defence exports have grown multi-fold from INR 15 bn in 2017 to INR 210 bn in 2024 at a CAGR of 46%. The China + 1 strategy and the Russia-Ukraine war provides an additional opportunity for India to fill the gap created in the supply chain and hence increase its contribution to the global defence industry," the report read. The report added that to achieve this target a well-developed domestic ecosystem is crucial as lower import content in products accelerates approvals by reducing international conflicts. The report added that the Ministry of Defence has taken key initiatives to attract Indian private players and global Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) include establishing aerospace parks and defence corridors, fast-tracking project approvals, and enhancing development and testing facilities. Highlighting the potential in India's Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) segment the report explained that it holds a significant potential for global aerospace companies due to its technical expertise and cost-competitive solutions. "India provides a huge opportunity in the <keyword id="23046733" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="MRO-segment" source="keywords">MRO segment</keyword> for global aerospace leaders given the expertise the country provides as well as the cost efficiency solutions compared to its global competitors" the report added. India aims to increase domestic defence turnover to Rs 3 lac crore by 2029, Rs 500 billion targeted for exports. This growth will help reduce the Government of India's import bill as India remains the world's largest importer of defence equipment. Under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative of the government, 75 per cent of the defence capital outlay is now reserved for domestic players, up from 49 per cent in FY21. Given the geopolitical challenges and modernisation needs of its Armed Forces, the report added that India plans to invest Rs 8.3 lac crore in domestic procurement, offering substantial business opportunities for local companies. "India intends to place orders worth INR 8.3 trn through domestic procurement and thus it presents a massive business opportunity for local players" it added. As per the Ministry of Defence, India's defence manufacturing sector has witnessed an increase of 16.8 per cent in the fiscal year 2023-24. This significant increase marks the highest-ever growth in the country's defence production value. The total value of defence production reached Rs 1,26,887 crore this year, up from the previous year's figures.

India's defence exports surge to Rs 210 billion after global shift towards China+1, Russia-Ukraine war: Report

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Regulators want to slash the number of short-haul flights to reduce aviation's carbon emissions.</li><li>But experts told BI recent regulations might only have a small impact on reducing emissions.</li><li>Shifting to greener fuels and enhancing green tech are essential for cleaner air travel.</li></ul>To reduce carbon emissions and boost sustainability in the aviation industry, some governments and air-travel regulators are looking to ban or severely limit the number of short-haul flights.Air travel is a dirty business: While the industry <a target="_blank" href="https://www.iea.org/energy-system/transport/aviation">produces about 2%</a> of global energy-related carbon emissions, a plane trip produces <a target="_blank" href="https://news.mongabay.com/2022/04/how-much-does-air-travel-warm-the-planet-new-study-gives-a-figure/">100 times more carbon dioxide per hour</a> than a train or bus ride. And short-haul flights, or <a target="_blank" href="https://www.eurocontrol.int/publication/eurocontrol-data-snapshot-co2-emissions-flight-distance">routes of 932 miles or less</a>, produce a disproportionate amount of carbon output. A report from the International Council on Clean Transportation, or ICCT, found that short-haul flights made up <a target="_blank" href="https://theicct.org/not-every-tonne-of-aviation-co2-is-created-equal/">a third of all global aviation emissions</a> in 2018.But experts say bans alone won't significantly impact carbon emissions. Instead, reducing the number of short-haul flights, experimenting with new technologies, and investing in environmentally friendly travel alternatives may go further in reducing the aerospace industry's carbon footprint.<h2>Regulations on short-haul flights aren't yet having the desired effect on emissions</h2>Denmark announced last year that by 2025, Danes will be able to fly domestically on a "completely green route," meaning that at least one domestic flight would be carbon-free and that all domestic flights would be fossil-fuel-free by 2030. The move makes Denmark one of the first countries to signal publicly for stronger aviation-sustainability policies.The Danish government also <a target="_blank" href="https://www.reuters.com/sustainability/climate-energy/denmark-proposes-14-green-passenger-tax-air-travel-2023-11-09/">announced a "green tax</a>" on passengers starting in 2025 to finance the country's green domestic route. The tax, converted from Danish krone, amounts to $9 for flights within Europe, $35 for medium-distance flights, and $56 for long-haul flights.Similarly, earlier this year, the French government enacted a law banning any flights within the country that a train ride of 2-and-½ hours or less could replace.The law initially seemed like a big win for climate activists, but the number of exceptions for international travel meant the law only impacted three routes between Paris-Orly Airport and the cities of Nantes, Bordeaux, and Lyon.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/summer-flight-cancellations-airlines-partner-with-buses-trains-2022-5">France's hyper-connected railway</a> allows passengers to move between cities without changing travel patterns. Since high-speed trains already connect the impacted flight routes, potentially limiting the law's effects, the country's aviation industry isn't likely to see any big changes to its carbon footprint."In terms of absolute emissions reduction, it's not going to do too much," Sola Zheng, a researcher on the ICCT aviation program team, told Business Insider. "But it's a very good precedent that governments are willing to pull these kinds of levers."<div type="image" title="Headshot of Sola Zheng, wearing a white blouse in front of greenery." height="1365" width="1365" msid="106002081" hostid="261" sizebytes="61600"></div>But banning short-haul flights doesn't solve the industry's carbon-footprint problem, Giulio Mattioli, a transportation researcher at the Technical University of Dortmund in Germany, said. He told BI that banning these routes would have minimal environmental effects unless regulations <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tech-innovation-not-only-solution-to-climate-crisis-2023-7">address the industry holistically.</a>"Maybe ban short-haul flights, but then don't expect that to solve the problem," he said. "We need to talk about the long-haul flights as well."<h2>Other strategies could curb the industry's emissions</h2>The solution to the industry's emissions problem, Mattioli said, can be divided into a three-part strategy: avoid, shift, and improve. Avoiding would mean curbing the amount of flying we already do, or at least maintaining the same level of travel without increasing it; shifting would mean moving toward methods of travel, such as trains or buses, that create less pollution; and improving would mean enhancing sustainable aviation technology.Mattioli told BI these strategies are all complementary, so the aviation industry must implement them simultaneously."It's only if we do those three things at the same time we have a chance of reducing emissions at the rate at which we should," Mattioli said.Zheng said one emerging aviation technology that could make a difference is alternative power sources, such as hydrogen or electricity. Shorter flights are great candidates to test these advancements since electric and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/aviation-industry-net-zero-by-2050-disagree-decarbonization-2023-12">hydrogen-powered planes</a> are often distance-constrained due to battery density and fueling needs. Because short-haul flights don't have to travel very far, the aviation industry won't have to change many flight patterns to test alternative power sources.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/aviation-sustainable-fuel-saf-production-challenge-decarbonization-zero-emissions-planes-2023-1">Sustainable aviation fuels</a> have also recently gained industry attention because they're largely made of waste materials or renewable biomass. While aircraft could theoretically use these materials for longer flights, supply problems make their use as primary fuel unrealistic for the near future."You want to develop these other solutions for the shorter ones, so you can decarbonize both at the same rate," Zheng said.<h2>Passengers can help reduce emissions, too</h2>Flying continues to be a priority for travelers. A report from the International Civil Aviation Organization found that demand for air travel is expected to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.icao.int/Meetings/FutureOfAviation/Pages/default.aspx#:~:text=The%20most%20recent%20estimates%20suggest,GDP%20to%20the%20world%20economy.">grow by about 4.3% a year over the next 20 years</a>.But Zheng said passengers are interested in making their <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/eco-friendly-travel-sustainability-expert-tips-2023-4">travel greener</a> and are willing to take steps to accomplish that goal. A Booking.com survey found that <a target="_blank" href="https://globalnews.booking.com/download/31767dc7-3d6a-4108-9900-ab5d11e0a808/booking.com-sustainable-travel-report2023.pdf">76% of surveyed passengers</a> want to make their travel more sustainable over the next year, and 43% of surveyed passengers are willing to pay more for it.Zheng recommended flying on newer aircraft or booking an economy seat. Flights that dedicate more seats to standard seating can fit more people, reducing each passenger's carbon footprint."We have to experiment," she said. "There's never going to be a silver bullet."

The <keyword id="152819" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="defence-research-and-development-organisation" source="Orion">Defence Research and Development Organisation</keyword> (<keyword id="6355142" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="drdo" source="Orion">DRDO</keyword>) conducted two successful flight tests of the <keyword id="6354416" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="indian-army" source="Orion">Indian Army</keyword>'s version of the Medium Range Surface to <keyword id="635273" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="air-missile" source="Orion">Air Missile</keyword> (MRSAM) on Sunday. The tests, conducted at the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur, off the coast of Odisha, were carried out as part of the live firing trials against high-speed aerial targets. The first test was to intercept a medium-altitude, long-range target and the second against a low-altitude, short-range target. The missiles intercepted the targets and destroyed them completely, registering direct hits at both ranges. Developed jointly by DRDO and the <keyword id="621699" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="israel-aerospace-industries" source="Orion">Israel Aerospace Industries</keyword> (IAI), for use by the Indian Army, the MRSAM Army weapon system comprises multi-function radar, mobile launcher system, and other vehicles. The flight tests were carried out with the weapon system in deliverable configuration. The performance of the weapon system was validated through the flight data captured by range instruments like radars, electro-optical tracking systems and telemetry deployed by ITR, Chandipur. Senior officials from the DRDO and the Indian Army were present at the test site. DRDO successfully flight-tests Army's surface to air missile

"The fee is reasonable. Skyroot Aerospace's rocket Vikram-S with three small satellites is scheduled for launch on November 18 at 11.30 a.m. "Launch is likely on 18th as the weather is predicted to be ideal. Due to inclement weather, we got an updated launch window of November 15-19, 2022," Chandana said. According to him, the Vikram-S rocket is a scaled down version of Vikram-1 rocket. The former is a single stage rocket whereas the latter is a multi-stage vehicle. "Almost all our systems flying in Vikram-S were designed in-house, except for few sensors which were imported," Chandana said. The rocket will be powered by a single stage to help test and validate the majority of the technologies in the <keyword id="1091" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="vikram" source="Orion">Vikram</keyword> series of rockets. The company plans to have three rocket variants: Vikram I - payload or carrying capacity 480 kg to 500 km low inclination orbit (LIO); 290 kg to 500 km sun synchronous and polar orbit (SSPO); Vikram II - 595 kg to 500 km LIO, 400 kg to 500 km SSPO and Vikram III - 815 kg to 500 km LIO, 560 kg to 500 km SSPO.
