<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="1245936" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Aerion">Aerion</keyword> has broken ground on a new campus in Melbourne, Florida that will house the production facilities for its AS2 supersonic business jet.</li><li>The $300 million campus will be known as Aerion Park and span 110.6 acres at Melbourne International Airport on Florida's Space Coast. </li><li>Aerion expects to begin building the first AS2 in 2023 once the production and engineering facilities are complete. </li></ul><p>Florida's Space Coast is about to become the Supersonic Coast with a startup that's working to usher in the new era of supersonic <keyword id="6354692" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Travel">travel</keyword> that has just broken ground on a new campus in Melbourne, Florida.</p><p>Aerion is investing $300 million into Aerion Park, a 110.6-acre campus on the grounds of Melbourne International Airport in central Florida where the startup's flagship craft, the AS2, will be built come 2023. Aerion Park will house the production plants capable of building 48 AS2 aircraft per year once at full strength and will be where customers come to design and then take delivery of their jets.</p><p>The AS2 was first announced in 2014 as the world's first supersonic business jet that will be able to fly between eight and 10 passengers at supersonic speeds of up to Mach 1.4, significantly cutting down travel times. It will be among the first in a new wave of aircraft that will once again take flyers beyond the sound barrier, a feat that hasn't been regularly accomplished since the iconic Concorde airliner retired from commercial service in 2003. </p><h2>Building on the Space Coast</h2><div type="image" title="Aerion Supersonic Aerion Park Groundbreaking" height="1390" width="1853" msid="79664800" hostid="261"></div><p>Aerion Park will be built in phases starting with the engineering, manufacturing, and production facilities first on the list, CEO Tom Vice told Business Insider in an interview, as production for the AS2 is slated to begin in 2023. Five AS2 test aircraft will be built from 2023 to 2025 and then the sixth aircraft produced at Aerion Park will go to the first customer. </p><p>All assembly, testing, and completion will occur at Aerion Park with the manufacturing center the size of around 14 football fields, Vice said. Customers will visit Aerion Park to design their aircraft in the customer experience center and then return to take delivery of the aircraft once complete. </p><p>Sustainability will also be a key tenet of the facility, just as it is for the AS2, with a focus on green technologies such as solar to power the plant's operations and 100% water recycling, including reusing rainwater. And for employees, Aerion Park will feature children's daycare, laundry services, and vehicle charging stations. </p><p>Melbourne, Florida was chosen by Aerion after a two-year selection process with the central Florida city standing out in part due to the available talent in the region and the activities at nearby Cape Canaveral. "There's a lot of excitement in the Space Coast and the Melbourne, central Florida area, Vice said, "not only with aerospace but obviously commercialization of space." </p><p>Melbourne International Airport offers near-direct access to the Atlantic Ocean, over which the AS2 can perform its supersonic test flights outside of any populated areas. And Aerion will be in good company as it will be located on the same airport as Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer and miles from where NASA and SpaceX are launching the next-generation of rockets into space. </p><h2>Not just another Concorde</h2><div type="image" title="Aerion Supersonic AS2" height="1665" width="2220" msid="79664805" hostid="261"></div><p>The Concorde proved supersonic passenger travel viable and its disappearance from the skies was a step back for aviation that new startups are attempting to remedy with the next-generation of aircraft.</p><p>The <keyword id="7297728" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Aerion-AS2">Aerion AS2</keyword> will boast a subsonic range of 5,400 nautical miles, comparable to a Gulfstream G500, and a supersonic range of 4,200 nautical miles. Flying from New York to London will only take four hours while flying to Sydney will take less than 14, though the latter will still require a fuel stop. </p><p>Melbourne residents also won't have to worry about their local airport turning into the next John F. Kennedy International, Charles de Gaulle, or Heathrow Airport, the three airports most frequented by the Concorde toward the end of its life. The AS2 will use what's known as "boomless cruise" where the jet can fly above the speed of sound but the dreaded supersonic boom won't reach the ground. </p><p>When flying subsonic, the jet's top speed will be Mach .95, faster than the Cessna Citation X that tops out at Mach .935. </p><p>After fielding a newly-announced order from China, Aerion now has 54 AS2 aircraft on order for a total order book valued at $6.5 billion. A single AS2 aircraft costs $120 million, around 30% more than the cost of the largest and fastest subsonic business aircraft currently in development or production with Gulfstream, Bombardier, or Dassault. </p><p>Aerion is projecting an entry into service date for the AS2 in 2027 after two years of test flying and certification beginning in 2025. But the AS2 is just the beginning as Aerion has greater plans for a jet that can fly at speeds four times the speed of the sound that Vice says will "disrupt all of aviation" when it debuts. </p><p>"We're building a future when humanity can travel between any two points on our planet within three hours," Vice said in a speech during the facility's groundbreaking event.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Engine manufacturers are not interested in helping Boom build a supersonic powerplant, per FlightGlobal.</li><li>The comments come after Rolls-Royce announced an end to its contract with Boom in early September.</li></ul><p>Boom Supersonic may be forced to make its own engine for its ultra-fast Overture jet.</p><p>In 2020, engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce <a href="https://boomsupersonic.com/news/post/boom-supersonic-and-rolls-royce">signed</a> an "engagement agreement" with Boom to explore an engine that could power the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-boom-supersonic-updated-ultra-fast-aircraft-overture-2022-7#the-overture-was-already-designed-to-fly-incredibly-fast-but-to-create-a-more-efficient-and-quiet-aircraft-boom-decreased-the-overtures-passenger-capacity-increased-its-number-of-engines-and-reconfigured-the-fuselage-and-gull-wings-3">faster-than-sound Overture</a>, which already <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meet-overture-the-boom-supersonic-aircraft-that-united-just-ordered-2021-6">has orders from United and American Airlines</a>.</p><p>However, <a href="https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/air-transport/2022-09-06/boom-seeks-engine-airlines-mull-supersonic-use-case">Rolls-Royce told AIN Online</a> in early September that it has since left the table. </p><p>"We've completed our contract with Boom and delivered various engineering studies for their Overture supersonic program," Rolls-Royce said.</p><p>"After careful consideration, Rolls-Royce has determined that the commercial aviation supersonic market is not currently a priority for us and, therefore, will not pursue further work on the program at this time," the company continued. "It has been a pleasure to work with the Boom team and we wish them every success in the future."</p><p>After Rolls-Royce's comments, GE Aviation, Honeywell, and Safran Aircraft Engines have all <a href="https://www.flightglobal.com/airframers/engine-makers-sound-downbeat-on-supersonic-leaving-boom-in-a-bind/150215.article">told FlightGlobal</a> that they are not currently interested in making a supersonic engine for Boom.</p><p>GE previously worked on the Affinity engine that was being developed to power a supersonic jet from <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/supersonic-jet-startup-aerion-breaks-ground-on-new-florida-campus-2020-12">defunct planemaker Aerion</a>, which was <a href="https://investors.boeing.com/investors/investor-news/press-release-details/2019/Boeing-Partners-with-Aerion-to-Accelerate-Supersonic-Travel/default.aspx">backed by Boeing</a> before closing its doors in May 2021 <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-05-22/texas-billionaire-s-supersonic-jet-dream-dies-as-aerion-folds?leadSource=uverify%20wall">due to financial challenges</a>. But, the company revealed to FlightGlobal that "civil supersonic is not a segment that we are currently pursuing."</p><p>Pratt &amp; Whitney, another company capable of making such an engine is also hesitant to participate, with chief sustainability officer Graham Webb calling supersonic jets "tangential."</p><p>Nevertheless, Boom is hard-set on finding an engine manufacturer and producing a power plant that is environmentally friendly. The company <a href="https://boomsupersonic.com/">hopes</a> its $200 million Overture jets will run on 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).</p><p>"As a practice, we avoid commenting on any ongoing and confidential negotiation with our suppliers, until both sides are ready to announce jointly," Boom told Insider on Friday. "However, we can reconfirm our intention to announce Boom's selected engine partner and transformational approach for reliable, cost-effective, and sustainable supersonic flight, later this year."</p><p>With engine makers reluctant to partner with Boom, Henry Harteveldt, travel analyst and president of Atmosphere Research Group, told Insider that the company may need to make its own.</p><p>"Boom has stated it wants its aircraft to be as environmentally responsible as it can be, which is a noble and critically important objective, but it is already hard enough and expensive enough for Boom to build the airplane," he explained. "So, if they were to also take on the engine, then it will be a big challenge."</p><p>He emphasized that Boom will also have to make sure that its engine does not infringe on anyone else's patents or classified military designs.</p><p>"It doesn't mean Boom can't do this, but they will need to raise additional funds or bring in a partner or two to help," Harteveldt told Insider. "But, if it is successful in building the jet and the engine, then they get their aircraft and have very unique intellectual property and a business advantage because they will not rely on a third-party engine maker."</p><p>Moreover, if Boom is successful in building both, then it may become an "attractive acquisition target" for companies like Airbus or Boeing.</p><p>Or, in a case of irony, it could sell its powerplant design to an engine maker and "not only recoup its cost but also possibly make a profit off of it," according to Harteveldt.</p>

Fifteen years later, three startups and a major defense contractor are plotting its return.</p><p>The Concorde made its first commercial flight in 1973, and for nearly 30 years, it allowed customers to cut overseas trips in half. A flight from New York to London would take about three hours and thirty minutes on the Concorde, compared to about seven hours on a standard, subsonic flight. </p><p>But the supersonic jet was expensive to operate, and the combination of a deadly accident in 2000 and an economic downturn after 9/11 <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/concorde-jet-may-come-back-2015-9">led to its retirement in 2003</a>.</p><h2>Boom Supersonic wants to make flights affordable</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Boom</span></p><p class="caption">Boom Supersonic thinks tickets on the XB-1 will cost around as much as today's business class fares.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The companies working on the Concorde's successors believe improved designs and materials will result in superior performance. But their aircraft will still be expensive to operate and, given current regulations, unable to fly over land in the US and many other countries due to the loud sonic boom they produce.</p><p>Due to those constraints, the next generation of supersonic planes will focus primarily on business travelers and the kinds of wealthy clients who fly on private jets instead of commercial aircraft.</p><p>But one startup, Boom Supersonic, thinks its customers will be able to buy tickets on its 55-seat, XB-1 aircraft for a price similar to today's business class fares. The company says it will be able to fly at Mach 2.2 (Mach 1 is the speed of sound), which would make it the fastest commercial aircraft in history. </p><p>The XB-1 will be made from carbon composites and use design features the company says will improve its aerodynamic qualities. Boom has <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/supersonic-flights-could-return-soon-2017-11">received over 75 pre-orders for the aircraft</a>, which it plans to deliver in 2023, from customers including Japan Airlines and the Virgin Group. On Tuesday, Ctrip, China's leading online travel agency, announced its investment in the company.</p><h2>Spike Aerospace believes it has conquered the sonic boom</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Spike Aerospace</span></p><p class="caption">Spike thinks the S-512's shape will help reduce its sonic boom.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Boom's competitors will focus on business executives who can afford to pay a premium for reduced travel times. Like Boom, they're touting their designs and materials.</p><p>Spike Aerospace CEO Vik Kachoria said the company's 18-seat, S-512 jet will reduce its sonic boom to a level that could be acceptable for flights over land due the jet's "cranked delta wing" shape, which resembles the Concorde with a lower portion of its wings removed. The company says the jet will be able to fly at Mach 1.6 and produce a perceived loudness level of less than 75 PLdB, lower than the Concorde's 105 PLdB. <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/topics/aeronautics/features/sonic_boom_thump.html">NASA has said</a> 75 PLdB is the level at which supersonic aircraft could fly over land without creating a disruptive amount of noise.</p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"Engineering tools that weren't available when the Concorde was designed now enable us to really look at the aircraft and optimize it in a number of ways that make it more fuel efficient, make it quieter when it's flying-reduce that sonic boom-and provide a better experience for the passengers," Kachoria said in an interview with Business Insider.</span></p><p>The aircraft's main cabin replaces windows with wraparound screens that allow passengers to watch movies, display PowerPoint presentations, or watch footage captured by cameras on the jet's exterior. Spike plans to deliver the aircraft in 2023. </p><h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">Aerion Supersonic hopes to be first to market</span></h2><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.aerionsupersonic.com/press-center/">Aerion</a></span></p><p class="caption">Aerion believes its AS2 jet will be the first to market.</p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Spike will compete most directly with Aerion Supersonic, which is aiming to deliver its 12-seat AS2 jet, with a maximum speed of 1.4 Mach, in 2025. The company has received an order of 20 aircraft from the fractional-ownership company Flexjet, and executive chairman and CEO Brian Barents said the aircraft will be the first to hit the market.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"We are on a clear path to bring this airplane to the market and be first to market," he said in an interview with Business Insider.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Barents emphasized the importance of using carbon fiber to build the AS2, and said the sturdy and lightweight material is one of the most significant developments in supersonic technology since the Concorde went out of commission. He said carbon fiber allows the jet to achieve supersonic natural laminar flow, a proprietary technology the company says<a href="https://www.aerionsupersonic.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/SNLF.pdf"> can reduce drag on the wings by as much as 20%</a> compared to the Concorde.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"Those design tools are not available to anyone else in the industry," Barents said.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In December, Aerion <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/lockheed-martin-might-help-aerion-make-supersonic-jet-2017-12">announced a potential partnership with Lockheed Martin</a> that could result in a collaboration on the AS2. Richardson, the director of air vehicle technologies at Lockheed's Skunkworks, said other companies have approached it about potential collaborations on commercial supersonic aircraft over the past 15 years, but Lockheed turned down those proposals for various reasons, including insufficient funding, underdeveloped markets, and a reliance on regulatory changes.</p><p>Richardson said Aerion's proposal stood out because of the engineering behind the AS2 and the way Aerion described its commercial potential.</p><p>"It was the rigor of their technical work on the AS2 and their marketing and business story that led us to want to learn more and discover for ourselves what the potential could be of working together," he told Business Insider.</p><p>Lockheed may also have the best chance of influencing the regulations that forbid supersonic flight over land. Earlier this month, NASA announced that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/lockheed-martin-nasa-to-build-supersonic-jet-2018-4">Lockheed had won a $247.5 contract</a> to build an experimental aircraft designed to fly at supersonic speeds without producing a disruptive sonic boom. Lockheed will deliver the aircraft to NASA in late 2021, at which point the agency will test it over US cities to evaluate the amount of noise it emits.</p><h2>Timelines for delivering aircraft may be optimistic</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>AP</span></p><p class="caption">The Concorde went out of commission in 2003.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p style="font-weight: 400;">It's easy to become excited listening to the next generation of supersonic aircraft builders describe their products' capabilities, but aviation analyst Henry Harteveldt said some of their claims should be taken with a grain of salt. </p><p style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Harteveldt, like Kachoria and Barents, doesn't think supersonic flight will be allowed over land in the next decade. In the near term, he said the aircraft companies like Aerion, Boom, and Spike are promoting can't be built with today's engine technology.</span></p><p style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">"Right now, we still have not made enough progress with the aircraft engines," he told Business Insider. "</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">These are virtual aircraft that exist only in very slick video presentations and PowerPoint presentations and CAD designs. Aviation companies are plotting the return of supersonic flight - and they think their jets will be better than the Concorde

The security and aerospace company hopes to design the aircraft so that it will emit only 75 Perceived Level decibels (PLdB), which is about as loud as a car door closing.</p><p>Lockheed will deliver the aircraft to NASA in late 2021, at which point NASA will test it over US cities to evaluate its noise-reduction capabilities. The data collected in these tests will be given to US and international regulators, who may use it to consider new regulations around supersonic flight. </p><p>The return of supersonic flight <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/supersonic-flights-could-return-soon-2017-11">has developed an increasing amount of momentum</a> in recent years from startups like Aerion, Boom Supersonic, and Spike Aerospace. In December, Lockheed announced a potential partnership with Aerion in which Lockheed will take the next year to determine if it wants to help Aerion build its 12-passenger AS2 jet. The AS2 would be able to fly at 1.5 times the speed of sound, which would allow it to travel from New York to London in around 4.5 hours.</p><p>But Aerion, Boom, and Spike are focused on international flights that would depart from coastal cities like New York and Boston to avoid the US mainland. It used to be a major player in the commercial aircraft market, and the company currently brings in more revenue than any other defense contractor.</p><p>Aerion and Lockheed wouldn't be the only companies trying to revive supersonic flight.
