<ul><li>Researchers at the Italian Institute of Technology have developed an <keyword id="12699083" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="aerial-humanoid-robot" source="Orion">aerial humanoid robot</keyword>.</li><li><keyword id="12699082" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ironcub" source="Orion">iRonCub</keyword> is equipped with jet engines that will help make it fly.</li><li>The robot also has flame-protective coverings on its legs and feet.</li></ul>The current big challenge for robots is to make them move around or even fly safely. Italian researchers have come close to building a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/this-robot-can-walk-fly-and-even-ride-a-skateboard/articleshow/86829344.cms">robot that can fly</a>. Meet iRonCub, a small humanoid robot that looks like a kid but it’s carrying four jet engines instead of a backpack. <br /><br />iRonCub has been <a href="https://spectrum.ieee.org/flying-humanoid-robot">developed</a> by researchers at the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT), and it’s been some five years in the making for this Iron Man-like <keyword id="1447007" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="flying-robot" source="Orion">flying robot</keyword>. The idea behind iRonCub was to install jet engines on its hands and feet to make the robot fly. It’s similar to the jetpack that Richard Browning developed. <br /><br />There are two jet engines clipped on to the back of the robot, and two jet engines on the forearms. iRonCub is also sporting what looks like a cool pair of metallic pants but it’s actually made of heat-resistant material to protect the robot from the jet engines’ fire. But a new and updated version of iRonCub has flame-protective coverings on its legs and feet.<br /><br /><strong>How exactly would flying humanoid robots help<br /></strong><br />Aerial humanoid robots can be technologically, socially and scientifically beneficial according to Daniele Pucci, head of the Artificial and Mechanical Intelligence lab at the Italian Institute of Technology. Aerial humanoid robots like iRonCub can help in improving flying robots which are mostly quadrotors equipped with a robotic arm. These robots have limitations as they can’t move around much, and struggle to fly in windy conditions. <br /><br />Pucci also believes that aerial humanoid robots can be a test-bed for flying exoskeletons for human beings. The process behind making an aerial humanoid robot fly properly also raises multiple theoretical and practical questions which can help scientifically in the development of robots. <br /><br />iRonCub is almost ready for takeoff. Italian researchers have come close to building an Iron Man-like humanoid robot with jet engines

<b><br /></b><ul><li><strong><keyword id="6552763" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="disney-robotics">Disney Robotics</keyword> has a new <keyword id="1777396" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="acrobatic-robot">acrobatic robot</keyword> called <keyword id="6552761" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Stickman">Stickman</keyword>. </strong></li><li><strong>Stickman uses a gravity-driven pendulum approach to launch.<br /></strong></li><li><strong>Once in air, Stickman uses motion detection technology to perform aerial stunts. </strong></li></ul>Everyone loves to see acrobats perform at a circus but did you know that <a href="https://www.disneyresearch.com/publication/stickman/">Disney Research</a> has come up with their own human-scale <keyword id="20756" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Robot">robot</keyword> that can perform a double back flip? Accurately named the ‘Stickman’, <keyword id="46161" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Disney">Disney</keyword>’s robot can perform a range of stunts on the foundation of inertial motion-sensing technology.<br /><br />Stickman is made up of three lengths that helps the robot fold into a tuck and then expand again before it sticks the landing. More than that, the folding and unfolding features helps the robot adjust its rate of spin. <br /><br />Its three laser range finders -- leading, center and trailing -- help the Stickman determine how close or far away the ground is, as it falls. "The USA, despite their enormous military budgets, comes in 2nd place with 74 points, followed by <keyword id="6358826" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Russia">Russia</keyword> with 69, India at 61 and then France with 58. The UK just about makes the <keyword id="46676" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="top">Top</keyword> 10, coming in 9th place with a score of 43," said the study. <br /><br /> The study said "ultimate military strength index" was calculated after taking into consideration various factors including budgets, number of inactive and active military personnel, total air, sea, land and nuclear resources, average salaries, and weight of equipment. <br /><br /> China has the strongest military in the world, scoring 82 out of 100 points in the index, it noted. <br /><br /> "Based on these scores, which account for budgets, men, and things like air and navy capacity, it does suggest that China would come out as top dog in a hypothetical super conflict," it mentioned. <br /><br /> The world's biggest military spender with a budget of USD 732 billion per year is the USA, it noted, adding that China comes second with USD 261 billion, followed by India at USD 71 billion.  <br /><br /> "China would win by sea, USA by air and Russia by land" in this hypothetical conflict, it said. <br /><br /> "USA wins in an aerial war with 14,141 total airships vs Russia with 4,682 and China with 3,587. India has world's fourth strongest military, according to Military Direct's study

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Noah Berger/Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">The Apple Campus 2 is seen under construction in Cupertino, California in this aerial photo taken January 13, 2017.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong>Less than 5% of donations from wealthy people in Silicon Valley reach local nonprofits.</strong></li><li><strong>Silicon Valley nonprofits are trying to rely more on data analysis to show wealthy donors how their money could make an impact.</strong></li><li><strong>Some nonprofits have hired marketing consultants to help out.</strong></li></ul><p>Silicon Valley is home to many prominent philanthropists - Larry Page, Elon Musk, Pierre Omidyar, to name a few - but these billionaires often donate to causes outside the Bay Area.</p><p>Meanwhile, nonprofits in Silicon Valley are struggling to raise enough money as demand for their services grows, <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2018/07/how-silicon-valley-has-disrupted-philanthropy/565997/">according to The Atlantic</a>.</p><p>As a result, local organizations are being forced to act more like startups than traditional nonprofits to echo the mentality of Silicon Valley donors, who tend to measure effectiveness through data rather than altruism.</p><p>Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, his wife, <a href="https://www.mercurynews.com/2014/05/29/mark-zuckerberg-and-dr-priscilla-chan-why-were-committing-120-million-to-bay-area-schools/">have committed</a> $120 million to improving education in underserved schools across the Bay Area, but gifts like theirs are not all that common among Silicon Valley billionaires. </p><p>Roughly 90% of donations from Silicon Valley go to national and international causes, according to The Giving Code, a 2016 <a href="https://www.openimpact.io/giving-code/">report</a> about philanthropy in Silicon Valley. Of the remaining 10%, a significant chunk benefits hospitals and large universities, while less than 5% reaches local groups.</p><p>The rising cost of living is producing a greater need for community-based services in Silicon Valley, where nearly one-third of residents require public or private assistance.</p><p>In Santa Clara and San Mateo counties - home to Silicon Valley cities like Cupertino and Menlo Park - about 80% of the local nonprofits surveyed in the report saw an increase in demand over a five-year period. But more than half of them are struggling to meet demand for their services, and many are gradually adopting the language of startups to market their work to donors, The Atlantic reported.</p><p data-words="61">"In talking about the world and about their work, most nonprofit leaders speak a moral language that emphasizes social responsibility, social justice, equity, and the common good," <span>Alexa Cortés Culwell and Heather McLeod Grant, authors of The Giving Code, wrote in their report. "</span>The new philanthropists are far more transactional when describing their work and their strategies. Theirs is a language of finance, of metrics, of power, of capitalism, of winners and losers."</p><p>The Bay Area is home to some of the wealthiest people in the world, with 74 billionaires reported to be living in San Francisco last year, <a href="https://www.wealthx.com/report/the-wealth-x-billionaire-census-2018/#downloadform">according to</a> financial research company Wealth-X.</p><p>These individuals are striving to be "bigger, better, and faster" in their donations than past philanthropists, according to The Giving Code. </p><p>Billionaires' donations, however, frequently go toward issues they have personal connections to, such as diseases that have affected their loved ones. Bill Gates, for example, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ap-bill-gates-gives-50-million-to-combat-alzheimers-2017-11">donated</a> $50 million to Alzheimer's research last year, saying the decision was personal because men in his family have been diagnosed with the disease. Gates <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bill-gates-backing-30-million-alzheimers-fund-investors-2018-7">teamed up</a> with other philanthropists this year to put another $30 million into this research.</p><p>McLeod Grant told The Atlantic that tech donors also like to focus on large, systemic issues like healthcare and education.</p><p>Some nonprofits have already taken steps to focus more on data. The Silicon Valley Children's Fund, for example, hired a marketing firm to "<span>speak in the language of business and metrics" and help the nonprofit raise money for foster youth, according to The Atlantic.</span></p><p>Many local organizations, however, are not able to contract specialists with their current budgets. Close to one-third of Silicon Valley nonprofits have large deficits, and nearly half only have enough cash on hand to keep running for three months. </p><p>To help nonprofits attract more donors, two local foundations recently <a href="https://www.packard.org/2018/01/david-lucile-packard-foundation-heising-simons-foundation-announce-recipients-giving-code-experimentation-learning-grants/">awarded</a> 20 grants to community-based organizations. The grants are worth more than $800,000 in total and are meant to bridge gaps in social networks and mindsets between local nonprofits and Silicon Valley philanthropists. </p><p>One of these groups, Sacred Heart Community Service, will use its grant to hire a consultant who can help the nonprofit come up with metrics to describe its work and terminology to articulate how it is helping low-income people in Santa Clara County.</p><div><section id="article-section-2"><p>Some nonprofit leaders say local organizations with similar objectives could begin collaborating to raise more money, <a href="https://www.sfchronicle.com/business/article/Nonprofits-struggle-to-adjust-as-tech-donors-take-10823591.php">according to</a> the San Francisco Chronicle. Galas, for example, are popular among wealthy people in the Bay Area, and can generate between $300,000 and $1 million in donations. Silicon Valley nonprofits are struggling to get money from wealthy tech donors, so they're acting more like startups

The country's challenging <a href="But only one of them is " fundamental="" according="" to="" Barclays.="" And="" thats="" demographics.="" The="" principle="" behind="" this="" is="" really="" simple.="" When="" your="" working-age="" population="" shrinks="" everything="" in="" economy="" shrinks.="">demographics have been described as China's 'fundamental' problem.</a></p><p style="text-align: left;">China <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/china-is-abandoning-the-one-child-rule-2015-10?r=UK&amp;IR=T">recently revised its one-child policy</a>, in part to try to up reproductive rates. But there is another, more powerful change that is taking place in the country: the rise of robots. </p><p style="text-align: left;"><span>Bao Fan, chairman and chief executive of investment bank China Renaissance, described an exchange on the topic of China's future on social media in the aftermath of the one-child policy decision.  </span></p><h2 style="text-align: left;"><span><span>The largest population of robots</span></span></h2><p style="text-align: left;"><span>"I said two things: first, China will become world's largest elderly home," he wrote. "Second, China will have world's largest population of robots."</span></p><p style="text-align: left;"><span>The exchange was<a href="http://www.wsj.com/articles/china-abandons-one-child-policy-1446116462"> first reported by The Wall Street Journal. </a></span> </p><p style="text-align: left;"><span>The growth of robotics in China has been incredible. </span><span>In 2014 alone, the sale of robotics grew 56%, </span><a href="http://www.ifr.org/news/ifr-press-release/china-enforces-historic-robot-boom-776/">according to the International Federation of Robotics</a><span>. </span><span>China will likely account for more than a third of industrial robots around the world by 2018, the federation predicted in October.</span></p><p style="text-align: left;"><span><span>This trend is likely to be much more important than the policy shift on children for a variety of reasons. First, there are cultural challenges to upping the reproductive rate that extend beyond the end of the one-child policy. </span></span></p><p style="text-align: left;"><span>"In the long term, the labor shortage might become slightly less pressing because of the two-child policy, but the degree of the change will be very small because people aren't willing to have children," Fuxian Yi, the author of 'A Big Country with an Empty Nest' told Business Insider. </span><span>"The issue of old-care and the labor shortage is a very severe issue for China."</span></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.ifr.org/news/ifr-press-release/china-enforces-historic-robot-boom-776/">IFR</a></span></p><p class="caption">The International Federation of Robotic's estimates on Chinese robotics sales.</p></div><p></p></div></div>The increasingly well-educated young workforce shies away from blue collar work, too.</p><h2>Blue collar workers</h2><p style="text-align: left;"><span></span><span></span>"Their education has improved significantly from those of their fathers or older brothers," Credit Suisse analysts wrote in an October note. "Therefore, it will be increasingly difficult to find enough labor for jobs that are exposed to high temperatures, danger and a poisonous environment, and <strong>such vacancies</strong> <strong>will naturally need to be replaced by robots and automation systems</strong>." </p><p style="text-align: left;">Over the past decade the "reducing labour force due to a declining birth rate, along with them receiving a better education, has triggered the development of industry automation/ robotics in China," Credit Suisse analysts continued. </p><p>For companies, robotics are also becoming a more attractive option than human labor.</p><p style="text-align: left;">There is little loyalty between blue collar workers and their company in China, meaning workers often take their training elsewhere, increasing training costs. And labor in China is<a href="http://www.joc.com/international-logistics/sourcing-report-reveals-scale-china%E2%80%99s-rising-labor-costs_20150415.html"> becoming very expensive.</a></p><p>"In the Pearl Delta area such as Zhejiang and Jiansu, it's very hard to find workers,"<span>said Yunhui Liu, a professor of mechanical and automation engineering at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, who works with Chinese companies interested in purchasing robotics.</span><span></span> </p><p>"On top of that, every year there is Chinese New Years, and when workers go back to their hometown, only 20% or 30% of workers come back. They'll go to other places or their hometown. They won't go back to their factory."<span> </span></p><p><span>Liu also mentioned that while robots can work around the clock, human workers are restricted to working during the day.</span></p><p>Chinese government subsidies are also driving up robotics demand. China is currently subsidizing robot producers and manufacturers who <a href="http://www.scmp.com/lifestyle/technology/science-research/article/1754165/robotics-industry-booming-guangdong-insiders">install robots in their factories</a> - spending between $31.4 million to $78.5 million annually, according to the South China Morning Post.</p><p>China is also pushing for a <a href="http://english.gov.cn/news/top_news/2015/05/22/content_281475112380286.htm">"Made in China 2025"</a> plan, in the hopes of  becoming a leading robot maker by 2030. </p><h2>Deus ex machina?<strong><br /><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Junko Kimura/Getty</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></strong></h2><p>Then there is the increasing need for help in the home. </p><p>"While the one-child policy will officially end, its legacy looks set to last. It has created a fiscally strained generation of couples with four parents, potentially eight grandparents and one or two children to support," wrote a Credit Suisse analyst.</p><p>"The government will likely be under pressure to build crucial support infrastructure for childcare and old-care quickly." </p><p><span>The ratio of working to the elderly in China will only close over the next few decades. In 2010, for each elderly person, 7.6 were working. By 2030, that ratio shrinks to 3.3, 2.1 in 2040, and 1.7 by 2050.</span></p><p style="text-align: left;">"The use of service robots could finish tasks for the aged who are physical challenged. In addition, service robots can reach inaccessible places for different purposes such as unmanned aerial vehicle for movie recording," the Credit Suisse analysts wrote in their October note.</p><h2 style="text-align: left;">Challenges ahead</h2><p style="text-align: left;">To be sure, the rate of growth in robots will be tied to state of the broader economy, which is currently showing signs of a slow down.  </p><p style="text-align: left;">Swiss automation and power technology company ABB for example reported a slowdown in revenues from robotics sales in China in its third quarter results. </p><p style="text-align: left;">"<span>The reference in our outlook statement is mainly to convey that we recognize the transition the Chinese economy is going through from an export led industrial based economy to a more domestic consumer orientation,</span>" Sandra Wiesner, the media relations agent for ABB, told Business Insider.</p><p style="text-align: left;">"This transition will not only be uneven but also cause the pace of growth to be slower than in past year including 2014."</p><p style="text-align: left;">Wiesner added: "<span>The longer term demand drivers and opportunities for </span><span class="il">ABB</span><span> remain intact including the need to automate (due to labor shortage), renewables and electric vehicles (to provide better air quality) and power transmission / distribution (move west and renewable integration).</span>"</p>    <div class="margin-top">        <h3>NOW WATCH: <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/chinas-air-pollution-caused-a-48-car-pile-up-2015-11">China's air pollution is so bad it caused a 48-car pile-up</a></h3>        <div>            <div>        <div class="ooyala-video-player" data-video-autoplay="false" data-video-id="VkcnB0eDrNYgY8tduzRwqK6h5lc5XLk5" data-player-variable="ooyalapopvideo" id="ooyalaplayer_popvideo" style="width:1280px;height:720px"></div>        </div>        </div>            </div>
