Decentralisation is at the core of all the benefits that can be drawn off blockchain technology. <br /><br />Every app that is built on a blockchain platform today, boasts the fact that it is decentralised. So, it’s not surprising that crypto exchanges also want to jump on the bandwagon and many are on the path to launch their own <a href="https://wazirx.com/signup?invite=2kpah6gr&amp;utm_source=business-insider&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=article-advertorial">decentralised exchange</a> (DEX), where there’s no middle man, just traders swapping tokens with each other.<br /><br />There are currently more than 35 DEXs in existence globally including Uniswap, Kyber, and Bancor — popular alternatives to centralised exchanges. In India, WazirX has plans to launch a DEX of its own sometime this month, CEO Nischal Shetty told the <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/tech/technology/wazirx-to-launch-decentralised-exchange-next-month/articleshow/84806149.cms?from=mdr">Economic Times</a> in July. The crypto exchange boasts of 7.3 million users as of August, with more than half of its growth this year coming from Tier-II and Tier-III cities.<br /><br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="What is a centralised exchange?" comment="subhead" text="What is a centralised exchange?"><span data-til="noop">What is a centralised exchange?</span></cmsannotation><br />Before we get to what a <keyword id="12084249" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="decentralised-exchange" source="Orion">decentralised exchange</keyword> is, it’s important to understand what a centralised exchange is.<br /><br />Pretty much any crypto exchange in the world today is a centralised exchange. This means that when you deposit your <a href="https://wazirx.com/signup?invite=2kpah6gr&amp;utm_source=business-insider&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=article-advertorial">cryptocurrency</a> onto the platform, you’re basically transferring it to a wallet that’s held by the exchange. When you deposit fiat currency — whether its the US dollar or the Indian rupee — in order to buy crypto, that crypto is also held in the exchange’s centralised wallet, till you decide to liquidate the crypto and withdraw the money back into your regular bank account.<br /><br />Crypto wallets have two keys, a public and private keys. Public keys are shared with anyone who wants to send you cryptocurrency, while a private key is what you use to access your own wallet. For exchanges, these are simplified even further so you never have to interact with either of these keys, which — unlike passwords — aren’t the easiest to remember.“Any crypto wallet that won’t give you your private keys should be avoided at all costs,” billionaire Elon Musk had <a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1359400199521783809?s=20">warned</a> once.<br /><br />It’s not that centralised exchanges are necessarily risky, but it does mean that the investor does not have direct control over their purchases or holdings. In a centralised exchange, when you want to sell crypto, the exchange goes and finds another person who wants to buy your crypto. It facilitates this transaction and if you want to withdraw your crypto, you will essentially have to ask the exchange to sign a transaction on your behalf.<br /><br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Onto DEX…" comment="subhead" text="Onto DEX…"><span data-til="noop">Onto DEX…</span></cmsannotation><br />If you understood what a centralised exchange is, you can probably guess what a DEX is now. The primary difference, of course, is in the fact that you have access to the private key for your own crypto wallet. You’re not dependent on a central entity to hold your cryptocurrency.<br /><br />In some decentralised exchanges, the entire process of buying and selling is performed ‘on chain’ — it is completely transparent. You do not have to depend on a third party to facilitate the transaction, which may potentially charge you extra transaction fees on every trade. The fact that they are decentralised means there is no one entity that can be hacked, whereas a centralised exchange is more vulnerable to exploits, which in turn could affect its users. In addition, users retain access to their wallets and hence retain control of their own crypto holdings.<br /><br />In essence, a DEX is basically a bunch of crypto wallets that are trading with each other. Which leads us to the third big advantage — privacy. Unlike centralized exchanges, a DEX doesn’t necessarily require the user to go through the know your customer (KYC) process, meaning you do not hand over your documents to any one entity, and thereby risk giving access to others if that entity is hacked.<br /><br />However, KYC documents are also essential in the financial system, because they allow governments and authorities to track the flow of money. Like most things to do with privacy, this could be a double-edged sword in the long run.<br /><br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Enter Automated Market Makers (AMM)" comment="subhead" text="Enter Automated Market Makers (AMM)"><span data-til="noop">Enter Automated Market Makers (AMM)</span></cmsannotation><br />AMMs have been backed by some of the biggest venture funds in the world and billionaires. The idea is simple, the AMM is essentially an automated order book that facilitates liquidity on the exchange. Uniswap was the first DEX with an AMM to emerge back in 2018. <br /><br />A centralised exchange doesn’t just find buyers for you, it also works with large traders to ensure that there’s enough liquidity on the exchange and you can sell your crypto virtually whenever you want. Liquidity means there’s enough supply for available demand. If liquidity is low it will be difficult for you to sell crypto, and vice versa.<br /><br />AMMs look to solve the liquidity problem without depending on large traders using smart contracts — self-executing computer programs that ensure liquidity on the exchange. But the benefits of having an AMM in play don’t stop with liquidity. Eliminating the middle-man also means that the transaction fees won’t change while a transaction is happening.<br /><br />The AMM algorithms have pre-defined requirements for an entity or individual to become a liquidity provider. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Samsung announced its next big smartphones, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/samsung-galaxy-s8-release-date-specs-features-2017-3" target="_blank">the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+</a>, on Wednesday. As expected, both devices come with big displays, super thin bezels, and top-of-the-line specs. They <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/samsung-galaxy-s8-plus-photos-hands-on-2017-3" target="_blank">look good</a>.</p><p>Perhaps the most curious bit of news, though, isn't about the phones so much as an accessory that supports them: the DeX. Short for "desktop extension," this is a little dock that effectively turns the Galaxy S8 or S8+ into a desktop computer.</p><p>So if you wanted to finish a Word doc you started typing on the bus, for instance, you could pop the Galaxy S8 into the DeX, hook up a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, and continue on the bigger screen.</p><p>When everything is connected and the DeX is plugged into a monitor, the phone stretches out its Android skin to look like a Windows-esque PC platform. It seems pretty clean. The DeX itself has ports for USB-C, HDMI, Ethernet, and the older USB 2.0, and comes with its own cooling fan to keep your phone from overheating. You can still connect the web over LTE.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Samsung's own browser, email, calendar and other apps have been reworked to fit the more spacious screen, but the company says it's also getting Microsoft and Adobe to adapt their Office and Lightroom apps, respectively, to the non-mobile environment.</p><p>Samsung isn't saying how much the DeX will cost or when it'll be available, but <a href="http://winfuture.de/news,96748.html" target="_blank">past leaks</a> have said it'll cost <span>€</span>150 in Europe. So it could be pricey. Given that the Galaxy S8 itself isn't cheap, Samsung is pitching the DeX as a neat, productivity-boosting extra for Galaxy diehards more than a core aspect of the phone itself. </p><h2>A dream that will not die</h2><p>That's probably for the best. Samsung is just the latest in a string of tech companies who have tried to sell phones that can also be PCs. Thus far, none of them have taken off.</p><p>Tech people call this "convergence" - the idea that a single gadget, in this case the smartphone, can swallow all other device types and become the One True Computer for whatever you need.</p><p>The thinking behind it makes sense: The smartphone is already the most popular way people access the internet, and the technology behind it is only getting more powerful. Apple's A-series of mobile chips are at the point where you can at least put them in the <a href="https://daringfireball.net/linked/2016/09/14/geekbench-android-a10" target="_blank">same conversation</a> as an Intel desktop processor, and last year <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-finds-solution-to-mobile-conundrum-windows-10-2016-12?_ga=1.168548066.215906070.1490368168" target="_blank">Microsoft showed how</a> it can run its full Windows 10 operating system - albeit partially through emulation - on a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip. The Galaxy S8 itself runs on the latest and fastest <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/qualcomm-snapdragon-835-quick-charge-2016-11" target="_blank">Snapdragon 835</a> chip.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Meanwhile, more and more people are comfortable turning to less-robust devices like tablets and Chromebooks to fill their computing needs. If the phone is good and strong enough, why buy two or three computers when you could just have one?</p><p>It's an attractive pitch - which helps explain why Samsung is far from the first company to make something like it. Here's a quick history lesson:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">  Back in 2011, Motorola released the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/motorola-atrix-4g-review-2011-2" target="_blank">Atrix 4G</a>, an Android phone you could plug into a "Lapdock," a $500 laptop shell you could use to run the phone in a desktop environment. The phone itself was powerful at the time, but the Lapdock's price and limited functionality kept it as more of a gimmick than a game-changer.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">  Also in 2011, Asus introduced its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/asus-padfone-2011-5?op=1/#e-phone-docks-in-this-hatch-on-the-back-of-the-tablet-1" target="_blank">PadFone</a> line. This was a series of Android phones that could dock in the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/asus-padfone-x-review-2014-6" target="_blank">back of a tablet</a> shell and power that sort of form factor. Asus released a few iterations of this, but hasn't launched a new model since 2014.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">  UK software maker Canonical has repeatedly tried to position its Ubuntu OS as a platform that works across devices, to little consumer success. In 2013, it raised millions on Indiegogo for an <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ubuntu-edge-indiegogo-campaign-2013-8" target="_blank">Ubuntu Edge</a> phone that'd run Ubuntu when plugged into a desktop, but the company couldn't get the astronomical $32 million it asked for, and it subsequently scrapped the project. It <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2016/2/4/10914004/canonical-m10-ubuntu-tablet-convergence" target="_blank">later launched</a> a tablet that tried something similar, but it never really caught on. The company is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/canonical-founder-mark-shuttleworth-interview-2016-4" target="_blank">now looking more</a> at the Internet of Things.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">  Microsoft has taken the biggest stab at this idea, with its "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-continuum-on-lumia-phones-2015-10" target="_blank">Continuum</a>" feature for Windows 10 designed to scale the OS down for phone sizes. If you plug a phone like <a href="http://store.hp.com/us/en/mdp/tablets-243002--1/hp-elite-x3" target="_blank">HP's Elite x3</a> into a dock, it's meant to become a full Windows PC. There are still some features missing, though, and Windows phones have long lacked app developer support. That's made Continuum a niche feature, at best, for Windows loyalists.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">  <a href="http://www.jide.com/remixos" target="_blank">Jide's Remix OS</a> has transformed Android into a desktop-friendly design, but is still at the mercy of Google's own software updates, and is again more known by enthusiasts than anything else.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">  Various crowdfunded projects have pitched the idea of a dock into which you could plug an Android phone and translate its software to a big screen. The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/andromium-superbook-turns-smartphone-into-laptop-2016-7" target="_blank">Superbook</a>, for instance, is a $119 laptop "shell" that raised nearly $3 million on Kickstarter last year. Sentio, the company behind it, has <a href="https://www.engadget.com/2016/12/30/delays-hit-crowdfunded-laptop-dock-for-android-phones/" target="_blank">missed</a> its original shipping date, though.</p><h2>Familiar concerns</h2><p>While all of these projects have had their individual issues, the underlying problem in each case is that the software just wasn't cooked enough to be a full PC.</p><p>The DeX will work with the most popular devices to take on this idea, but right now, it's likely to have the same hangup: Android isn't quite there yet for bigger screens. You can run multiple apps at once, but if an app isn't designed for the DeX, it'll be displayed in a phone- or tablet-sized window. Those apps then won't be resizable. We've <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/google-play-store-android-apps-chromebook-hands-on-2016-6/#each-app-is-presented-in-its-own-window-which-for-now-isnt-adjustable-14" target="_blank">seen this issue</a> before with Android apps running on Google's Chromebooks.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Even then, a <em>lot</em> of Android apps that are ostensibly built for big screens - even Android's Settings menu - <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/samsung-chromebook-pro-future-of-chromebooks-google-2017-2/#when-it-comes-to-incorporating-android-though-google-still-has-some-cleaning-up-to-do-the-play-store-on-samsungs-review-unit-is-technically-still-in-beta-and-it-shows-there-are-way-too-many-bugs-compatibility-issues-and-outright-crashes-to-be-acceptable-8" target="_blank">resemble blown-up phone apps</a>, with white space aplenty. It's a similar problem to what Samsung just ran into with its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/samsung-galaxy-tab-s3-review-ipad-pro-android-2017-3" target="_blank">Galaxy Tab S3 </a>tablet: Google and Android developers just haven't cared about this use case, so the experience has been sloppy, and Google itself seems to be <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/google-chromebook-android-apps-chrome-os-support-list-2017-1" target="_blank">favoring Chrome OS</a> as its big-screen platform over Android.</p><p>Still, there are reasons to think things will get better. The latest Android update, Nougat, made a number of concessions to larger screens, allowing two apps to run side-by-side, and the upcoming Android O <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2017/3/21/14988982/google-android-o-chrome-os-chromebook-keyboard-navgiation" target="_blank">looks like</a> it'll take that further, with things like improved keyboard support. Google <em>is</em> making Android on large screens a focus.</p><p>But here you'll have to wait on Samsung to update its software to take advantage of whatever comes next. And while Samsung says it's working to have "many more" apps support the DeX, the fact that the dock is made for a small subset of Galaxy phones gives reason to doubt how many other developers will jump onboard. </p><p>The DeX does have<em> </em>one trick that could get around Android's shortcomings: Samsung says it's working with software companies like Citrix and VMWare to let you run a virtualized (i.e., streamed) version of Windows 10 off the phone. That would give you a more desktop-ready OS, but it's a solution that hasn't run smoothly on past Windows phones.</p><p>We'll have to test the DeX further to see how well this all works - and how much the Galaxy S8 can handle - but it's best to think of this as an add-on more than <em>the next step</em> for how smartphones collide with the PC. It's something the iPhone cannot do. <p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul class="summary-list"><li>Former and current <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/google">Google</a> employees are responding to a blog post written by a former employee that details her relationship with one of the company's top executives.</li><li>In the post, titled "<a href="https://medium.com/@jennifer.blakely/my-time-at-google-and-after-b0af688ec3ab">My Time at Google and After,</a>" Jennifer Blakely, who worked as a manager in Google's legal department, describes Google's "oppressive and entitled" culture that protects "elite men."</li><li>Blakely alleges that David Drummond (currently Alphabet's senior vice president of corporate development and chief legal officer) fathered a child with her while he was married and later abandoned her, using his position of power to control the situation.</li><li><strong>"The fact that Drummond is still an exec at Google speaks volumes about how much it tolerates shitty behavior by its male executives," one former Google employee wrote.</strong></li><li><strong>Read Jennifer Blakely's full post <a href="https://medium.com/@jennifer.blakely/my-time-at-google-and-after-b0af688ec3ab">here</a>.</strong></li><li><strong><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</strong></li></ul><p>A former Google employee set the internet alight after she shared a detailed account of her relationship with a top legal executive at the company in a blog post on Wednesday.</p><p>In the post, titled "<a href="https://medium.com/@jennifer.blakely/my-time-at-google-and-after-b0af688ec3ab">My Time at Google and After,</a>" Jennifer Blakely, who worked as a manager in Google's legal department, describes Google's "oppressive and entitled" company culture that protects "elite men."</p><p>She alleges that David Drummond, who is currently Alphabet's senior vice president of corporate development and chief legal officer, fathered a child with her while he was married, emotionally abused her, and later abandoned her, taking advantage of his position of power. </p><p>Drummond has not commented on the allegations. "Rarely do we hear about what happens to women after they are forced out of their jobs but I can tell you what happened to me."</p><p>Blakely said that she was told by Google HR that she would have to leave her role in the legal department after she had the baby. By then, Google had banned relationships between those in a direct-reporting line, meaning she could no longer work in the same department as Drummond. She was moved to the sales team, despite having no experience in the sector, and ended up leaving the company because she was "floundering" at work and became "depressed," she said.</p><p>"David offered to help us out financially on a monthly basis so I could leave my job in sales," she said, writing that he subsequently abandoned her. </p><p>Blakely's allegations were first detailed in an explosive <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/25/technology/google-sexual-harassment-andy-rubin.html">New York Times report</a> last October which uncovered Google's history of departing executives who had faced sexual harassment claims receiving multi-million dollar payouts.</p><h2>'Organize the world's women and make them universally accessible and disposable - Google according to David, Andy, Amit, Eric, Sergey, Richard'</h2><p>Former and current Google employees are now responding to Blakely's blog post on Twitter.</p><p>"The fact that Drummond is still an exec at Google speaks volumes about how much it tolerates shitty behavior by its male executives," Liz Fong-Jones, a former site reliability engineer and prominent internal activist who resigned in January, <a href="https://twitter.com/lizthegrey/status/1166781098883465217">wrote on Twitter</a>.</p><p>Vanessa Harris, who is currently a product manager at Google and has been with the company for nine years, <a href="https://twitter.com/technologypoet/status/1166826421378940929">tweeted</a> a doctored version of the company's mission statement:</p><p>"Organize the world's women and make them universally accessible and disposable - Google according to David, Andy, Amit, Eric, Sergey, Richard and the long list of execs who abuse their wealth and power for sexual favors."</p><p>Google's actual mission statement is: "To organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful."</p><p>These tweets continue:</p><p>A former Google speechwriter who had worked with some of its leading executives also got involved.</p><p>According to his <a href="https://www.brunswickgroup.com/dex-torricke-barton-i8786/">current bio</a>, Dex Torricke-Barton was Google's first executive speechwriter and worked with former CEO and chairman Eric Schmidt and current Alphabet CEO Larry Page. He did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.</p><p>He wrote: "Root and stem, the tech industry needs to rip out its abusive leaders.
