Research shows that the Indian tele-counselling market focusing on <keyword id="6354774" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mental-health">mental health</keyword> and emotional wellness could be worth Rs 1,100 crore, but very few companies have entered this niche till date. Here is a snapshot that captures the start-up’s vision and viability. 
 
Who runs <keyword id="1903471" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="SharingDard-com">SharingDard.com</keyword>: A team of four – all of them from IIM Lucknow. They are <keyword id="1903466" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sumant-Gajbhiye">Sumant Gajbhiye</keyword>, <keyword id="1903463" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gaurav-Rajan">Gaurav Rajan</keyword> and <keyword id="952037" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ritika-Sharma">Ritika Sharma</keyword> while Lima James joined the venture later. After working for 2 years in MNCs, the co-founders left their jobs and set up <keyword id="1903464" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="SRG-Sharingdard-Networking-Pvt-Ltd">SRG Sharingdard Networking Pvt Ltd</keyword> in Mumbai. The website went live in May 2013. 
 
What inspired the venture: College parties, whether you believe it or not. “In those parties, we often shared our experiences. Those heart-to-heart chats helped us open up since all of us came from different backgrounds but needed support during emotional turmoil. That’s when the idea struck us – why not start a website where people can share all their problems anonymously, without facing any social stigma,” says Sumant. 
 
What’s the pitch: At SharingDard, a parallel world is created where you can share your Emotions, Feelings, Grief, Secrets, Your Dard (pain)… Without your identity! 
 
How it works: Users can put their life stories under a suitable category as you have 7 sections there – right from Jobs and Career to Family and Social issues, Love and Relationship trauma, Social Taboos, Matrimony Search, I Feel Lonely and Other (for miscellaneous posts). You only need to input your e-mail ID and birth date to register and no other information is required. Visitors to the site can read the posts but if they want to post their views, messages and encouragement in an effort to help, they need to register as well. Another plus, you get loads of language options on the site. 
 
Claim to fame: Traction and stickiness. Last we checked, the site had 37,088 registered users globally (the numbers change fast) and according to Sumant, it gets NRI hits from around 80 countries. Its Alexa ranking in India on Oct 15 stands at 22,811 while the global ranking on Alexa is 192,659, up 162,057 versus the previous 3 months. On an average, each visitor spends around 15 minutes on the site. 
 
Show me the money: Unlike most digital businesses that essentially chase advertisement revenues, this company is eyeing the mental health &amp; wellness space. Its current business model includes a pre-paid tele-counselling service (www.yourcandidfriend.com) for adolescents, conducted 24x7 by 16 fully trained professionals. Going forward, it will come up with web counselling and also target the NRI segment. Bootstrapped till date, the start-up is also looking for funding and is in talks with angel investors. 
 
Biggest challenge: Not funding, but positioning the business in the Indian context. Many people who need help live in denial and emotional trauma is often swept under the carpet. SharingDard is a bold concept – now we have to see if it can rake in the moolah.

Analysis shows that children in the age group of 0-14 years are less affected by <keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-19">COVID-19</keyword>, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan informed the Lok Sabha on Friday. He said in a written reply that infection among children is mild and most of them remain asymptomatic. "Hence no specific action plan has been formulated in the current response phase to minimise the adverse effects of COVID-19 on such children," he said. Very rarely a severe illness, in form of multi-system inflammatory syndrome, has been identified, Vardhan said, adding this happens usually three to six weeks after the infection. The Department of Pediatrics, AIIMS, is documenting the long term effect of COVID-19 infection in children, he said. The minister was responding to a question on whether the government had formulated any action plan to control and minimise the adverse effects of COVID-19 in children aged 0-14. For appropriate management of COVID-19 cases, a three-tier arrangement of health facilities has been implemented -- <keyword id="8995444" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-care-centre">COVID Care Centre</keyword> with isolation beds for mild or pre-symptomatic cases, Dedicated COVID Health Centre (DCHC) with oxygen supported isolation beds for moderate cases and Dedicated COVID Hospital (DCH) with ICU beds for severe cases, he said. Guidelines on clinical management of COVID-19 have been issued, Vardhan said. They also provides for management of complications. On whether the government has made any assessment of adverse effects of COVID-19 on <keyword id="6354774" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mental-health">mental health</keyword> of children and has provided psychological support through healthcare professionals, Vardhan said the <keyword id="263716" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="ministry-of-education">Ministry of Education</keyword> has initiated a programme called 'manodarpan' covering a wide range of activities to provide psycho-social support to students, teachers and families for mental health and emotional wellbeing. There is a national toll-free helpline 8448440632 to provide tele-counselling for students, parents and teachers to help cope with the situation, he said. The standard operating procedure for health and safety protocols for reopening of schools issued by the Ministry of Education has incorporated guidelines for promoting emotional well-being of students and teachers, the minister said. The <keyword id="210071" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Health">Ministry of Health</keyword> set up a 24/7 helpline through NIMHANS, Bangalore, on March 29, 2020 to provide psycho-social support to the affected population, divided into different target groups, Vardhan said. Two central mental health institutions -- namely LGB Regional Institute of Mental Health, Tezpur and Central Institute of Psychiatry, Ranchi -- along with various states and UTs were also on-boarded to extend the services in regional and local languages. He said guidelines and advisories on management of mental health issues, catering to different segments of the society, were issued. To address the burden of mental disorders, <keyword id="6377129" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="government-of-india">Government of India</keyword> is implementing the National Mental Health Programme (NMHP), Vardhan said, adding the government is supporting implementation of the District Mental Health Programme (DMHP) under NMHP in 692 districts of the country. To generate awareness among masses about mental illnesses, Information, Education and Communication (IEC) activities are an integral part of the NMHP, he said, and at the District level, funds up to ₹4 lakh per annum are provided under the DMHP for awareness generation activities, he said. Analysis shows children between 0-14 years less affected by COVID, says Health Minister

A country with high access to <keyword id="6357247" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Internet">Internet</keyword>, albeit in urban areas makes a country ‘progressive’ one. In this day and age, being up-to-date with technology is what rates a country high on growth radar. But, as much as India would like to attach some funky tag to its emerging identity, that of being a contradiction where tradition and modernity co-exist with a fair amount of clashes surfacing every now and then, it’s ‘high-tech’ façade sometimes meets with the ugly side. 
 Consider this fact where one among every three teenagers in India is a victim of <keyword id="70923" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cyber-bullying">cyber bullying</keyword>. Though the fact that one in every two teenager faces cyber bullying in the west may bring some respite; among developing countries, India surely seems to be posting a very grim picture of self on this front. 
 In a basic understanding, cyber bullying refers to people using <keyword id="655799" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="electronic-communication">electronic communication</keyword> like emailing, <keyword id="6379342" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Social-Networking">social networking</keyword>, and texting to harm others. 
 
Psychiatrists have expressed concern about this trend, which is becoming a leading reason for teen suicides in urban areas in India. Because, almost every teenager living in big Indian cities does own a mobile phone, through which his access to technology, aka Internet takes place. And, when the adolescent isn’t equipped with life’s lessons or experience to take bullying on his stride, this debilitating experience can leave the teen in deep self doubt. It can tear the person apart and leave highly scared, fearful and unable to seek or access help. 
 
Truth and its implications come close home when one considers this data submitted by a leading company that makes anti-virus applications for computers. In a recently concluded survey, the company put out the findings stating more than 52% of the children/adolescents who had independent access to computer at home or on a shared system, or were users of smartphones, were victims of cyber bullying. They had, in some way or the other, faced negative situation online. 
 
What was more shocking was that the parents of the same children, who were surveyed, had no information about this. More than 84% parents felt their child was doing fine online, had not faced any negative situation, or the term cyber bullying wasn’t something that can be used to describe their children’s online experience. It simply didn’t figure in their list. 
 
Another concerning aspect that came forth during this study was that about 34% children ‘admitted’ to creating negative online experience for their peers or strangers whom they found to be vulnerable on an online platform. 
 
Cyberbullying stems from the fact that the perpetrator is vicariously trying to cover up his/her low self-esteem, by hurling abuses or insults at familiar people, or even total strangers. 
 
This is close to a real-life situation where a person is unduly critical of someone, even those not known to him, to make good for his own poor self-image. 
 
While tackling this issue, children may need their parents’ help to come out of the negativity created by the overall experience. Much like a life situation, where parents hold hands of children during difficult times to walk with them, helping children develop strong self-confidence. 
 
Legislation exists 
Cyber bullying is not a strange concept in India. In fact, there is already a legislation pertaining to this that parents can use to tackle the issue. The act, which came into existence in 2013, is focused on financial crimes and neglected interpersonal criminal behaviours. However, an amendment made to IPC, has covered this lacuna and parents can surely count on the law to protect their children from this situation. 
 
When someone is going through this experience, the person needs a lot of help and counseling to get through the situation. Here are a few pointers that can help a person overcome this difficult situation without losing self-confidence. 
 
No self-blaming: Blaming self for someone’s poor self-esteem does no good. This is just an id, a profile or a login name that’s indulging in this act, without even knowing the victim. This is never about the victim! 
 
Don’t respond: Responding to cyberbullies only makes them stronger. Stay off from the temptation to post an acrimonious reply. It does no good. 
 
Inform elders: Time to tackle cyberbullying is when it enters your real life. If you suspect your friends are doing this, inform your parents and analyse the situation before jumping the gun. 
 
Complain, don’t put up with it: Make use of the legislation that exists. It is for your protection. 
 
Never about you: No matter how often this bully lands on your page, always remember it is NEVER about you. It is about him/her as a person. Sympathise and build your self-morale above that.
