New Delhi, Country's largest power producer NTPC proposes to forge a <keyword id="6373972" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Joint-venture">joint venture</keyword> with government's strategic investment fund NIIF to set up an <keyword id="2584560" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Infrastructure-Investment-Trust">infrastructure investment trust</keyword> (InvIT). The proposed InvIT will help NTPC to monetise some of its <keyword id="10461945" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="operational-renewable-energy-projects">operational renewable energy projects</keyword>. Funds raised from such exercise would be used by the power producer to invest in <keyword id="10461946" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="additional-renewable-capacity">additional renewable capacity</keyword>. As per initial plan, NTPC would put the entire 1 GW of operational renewable assets and the 2 GW of RE projects in the pipeline under the trust. This will help to raise capital for expansion of renewable capacity. The power producer is also looking to expand the scope of its partnership with NIIF to foray in the power distribution business where it is bidding for privatisation of Union Territory discoms. NTPC plans to generate 25% of its power capacity from renewable sources by 2030, which will be equivalent of 32 GW of power capacity and require an investment of ₹1.60 lakh crore. InvIT route would be ideal to unlock the value of existing assets for making future investments in green projects. With a total installed capacity of 62,110 MW, <keyword id="347182" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="NTPC-Group">NTPC Group</keyword> has 70 power stations comprising 24 coal-based units, seven combined cycle gas/liquid fuel stations, one hydro, 13 renewables, along with 25 subsidiary and joint venture entities. NTPC looks at KV with NIIF for renewable infrastructure investment trust

<ul><li>2017 saw an increased growth of about 29% in solar energy than 2016 globally.</li><li>Wind energy accounted for an addition of 53 GW renewable power generating capacity.</li><li><keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> is also among the top countries with 19.6 GW solar energy setups installed since 2010.</li></ul>With traditional sources of energy being depleted at an alarming rate countries around the world have already started moving towards renewable sources of energy. According to a <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/lifestyle/science/world-saw-largest-rise-in-renewable-energy-capacity-in-2017-says-report/1192552/">report</a>, <keyword id="34553" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="renewable-energy">renewable energy</keyword> in 2017 accounted for about 70% of net addition to the global <keyword id="6356959" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="power-generation">power generation</keyword> capacity. However, many sectors of the global industries still lag behind when it comes to the use of renewable energy. For example, heating, cooling and transport sectors which account for four-fifths of the global energy demand, have shown limited migration towards renewable energy in order to satisfy their requirements. 2017 saw an increased growth of about 29% in solar energy as compared to 2016. According to reports, solar energy generating capacity has reached global records. It has accounted for 98 gigawatts (GW) addition to energy generating capacity, which is more than that of <keyword id="6356966" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="coal">coal</keyword>, <keyword id="6354703" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="natural-gas">natural gas</keyword> and nuclear power combined. Wind power also accounted for an additional 52 GW renewable energy generation globally. The world also saw increased investments in the renewable energy sector which was twice more than investments in new fossil fuels and nuclear power capacity combined. Renewable energy also accounted for more than two-thirds of investments in power generation. This trend is expected to continue in the following years due to increased cost-competitiveness and share of non-renewable energy in power generation. <keyword id="1334" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="China">China</keyword>, USA and <keyword id="28249" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="europe">Europe</keyword> accounted for 75% of the investments in renewable energy. The rest 25% came in from developing countries. A pledge made under the 2015 Paris climate agreement in order to limit the rise in global temperature to “well below” 2 degree Celsius above pre-industrial levels makes the challenge of cleaner energy much clearer. However, the power sector is not progressing fast enough to transmit the generated renewable energy. The report, keeping in mind the Paris agreement, said that the heating, cooling and transport sectors needs to migrate to cleaner energy, and they need to do it soon. In India, the number of installed solar thermal collectors increased by approximately 25% in 2017 as compared to 2016. And India is also <a href="https://www.greentechmedia.com/articles/read/solar-trends-2018-gtm-research#gs.QQSt8y8">among</a> the leading countries when it comes to solar power. The country currently <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/current-affairs/india-third-largest-solar-market-in-the-world-mercom-communications-118051500643_1.html">ranks third</a> on the global solar gigawatt (GW)-scale market with China topping the list. Since 2010, India grew by a compound annual growth of approximately 170% in the solar power market. The country has set a new record with the installation of 9.6 GW solar power units in 2017, which is double the 4.3 GW set-up that was installed in 2016. As of 2017, the total installed solar capacity of India was at 19.6 GW, which is about one-fifth of the planned solar capacity of 100 GW by 2022. The states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are the fastest growing in terms of solar power usage in India.

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="34553" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="renewable-energy">Renewable energy</keyword> capacity increased by 45% in 2020 the International Energy Agency said. </li><li>The <keyword id="66776" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="IEA">IEA</keyword> predicts that <keyword id="91910" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Renewable">renewable</keyword> energy sources will cover 90% of global power expansion in the next two years.</li><li>Demand for renewable energy increased during the pandemic, whilst use of other energy sources declined. </li></ul>Renewable energy sources increased by 45% in 2020, accelerating at their fastest rate since 1999, as demand for clean power grew during the COVID-19 pandemic, the International Energy Agency said in a <a href="https://iea.blob.core.windows.net/assets/18a6041d-bf13-4667-a4c2-8fc008974008/RenewableEnergyMarketUpdate-Outlookfor2021and2022.pdf">report</a> on Tuesday. Wind energy led the expansion, as global capacity increased by 90%. Solar energy capacity grew by 23%. The IEA links this increase in renewable energy capabilities to global policy decisions and deadlines that countries had set themselves in terms of expanding their renewables sectors. China, the US and Vietnam are credited with leading the renewables push after momentum slowed when the pandemic first hit. "Overall, IEA quarterly deployment estimates indicate that the slowdown in renewable capacity additions was limited to Q1 2020 only, mainly in China, while construction activity continued strongly in the rest of the world despite continuous movement restrictions and supply chain delays," the agency said in the report.Energy <keyword id="31671" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="markets">markets</keyword> were hit hard during the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw travel come to a halt, as lockdown restrictions forced people to stay at home. Oil prices fell and turned negative for the first time in early 2020, as demand for the fuel vanished. Crude has since recovered, as investors anticipate economies reopening. The decline in fossil fuel use also affected biofuel demand, the IEA said. Production fell by 8% in 2020, but still exceeded expectations - 150 billion liters of biofuel were needed in 2020 vs the 144 billion the IEA had predicted. The agency expects demand to rebound in 2021 and grow by a further 7% in 2022. Looking ahead, the IEA predicts renewable energy sources will be responsible for 90% of global power expansion in 2021 and 2022. The agency expects solar and hydrogen power to play key roles, while the growth of wind power is set to slow down after its surge in 2020. "The acceleration of hydropower additions through 2022 is driven by the commissioning of mega-scale projects in China. Meanwhile, expansion in other renewables, led by bioenergy, remains stable and represents 3% of total new renewable capacity additions," the IEA said. China had already been the driving force of renewable energy expansion in 2020, accounting for half of the new capacity installations and is expected to keep this leadership position, the IEA said. Despite President Joe Biden's recent <keyword id="17408" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="infrastructure">infrastructure</keyword> plans, Europe is set to replace the US as the second-largest renewable market in 2021 thanks to national policies on <keyword id="6361617" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="climate-change">climate change</keyword> and deadlines that are looming. Biden's infrastructure spending may not take effect until later this decade, the IEA said.

Renewable energy sources grew at their fastest rate since 1999 last year when COVID-19 struck, the IEA says

New Delhi, Feb 4 () India has commissioned renewable energy (RE) projects totalling 7,591.99 MW during April-December, 2019-20, Parliament was informed on Tuesday. 
Another 34,160 MW capacity is under implementation, Renewable Energy Minister R K Singh said while replying to a question during Question Hour in the Rajya Sabha.
"Renewable energy capacity of 7,591.99 MW has been commissioned in the year 2019-20 up to December 2019. Another 34,160 MW RE capacity is under various stages of implementation," Singh said.
It is expected that RE capacity addition in 2019-20 will exceed the capacity addition achieved in the previous financial year which stood at 8,532.22 MW, he said.
Singh further said most of the grid-connected RE projects are being implemented by private sector developers selected through a transparent competitive bidding process. Capital investment made by these developers is their privileged information.
 "However, based on standard capital costs per MW, an investment of Rs 40,459.99 crore is estimated to have been made in Renewable Energy sector in 2018-19. An investment of Rs 36,729.49 crore is estimated to have been made in 2019-20 up to December 2019," he added. ABI ABI ANU

India commissions 7,591 MW RE capacity in Apr-Dec FY20: R K Singh

New Delhi, Dec 10 () The government has assured renewable energy developers of providing more business-friendly environment and policies like payment secuirty mechanism to lower risk on investment. 
 "Government is committed to managing curtailments to enhance the ease of doing business for developers in the renewable energy sector," New and Renewable Energy Secretary Anand Kumar said on the sidelines of the ongoing Madrid Climate Conference (CoP25) at Madrid in Spain late Monday.
 A payment security mechanism to de-risk investments in renewable has also been been put in place, and on the demand side, the ministry is working with farmers and commercial and industrial (C and I) consumers to embed them into the renewables value chain as direct stakeholders, he was quoted as saying in a release by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).
 At the summit, the official also informed about India's 175 GW renewable energy capacity by 2022 and said 83 GW has already been installed, and additional 70 GW capacity is under fruition.
The MNRE aims to bid out the balance capacities for solar and wind by June 2020, giving developers 30 months to complete deployment, Kumar said.
"Kumar (also) underlined the need for catalysing private investment and expand India's clean energy market through innovative risk mitigation and aggregation instruments. He stated that the additional investments in renewable up to year 2022 would be about USD 80 billion at today's prices and an investment of around USD 300 billion would be required up to 2030," the statement said
The official also briefed about the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evem Utthan Mahabhiyan (PM- KUSUM) Scheme for farmers to install solar pumps and grid connected renewable power plants, targeting 26GW capacity and 1.7 million farmers by 2022. ABI ABI MR

India assures renewable developers of pro-biz policies

<keyword id="19895436" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Adani-Green-Energy-Ltd" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Adani Green Energy Ltd" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Adani Green Energy Ltd">Adani Green Energy Ltd</keyword> (AGEL) on Friday posted a 38.85 per cent decline in consolidated net profit to Rs 310 crore for the March quarter, mainly on account of increased expenses. Its net profit was Rs 507 crore in the January-March period of the preceding 2022-23, the company said in an exchange filing. During the fourth quarter of FY24, the company's total income fell to Rs 2,806 crore from Rs 2,977 crore a year ago. The company's expenses surged to Rs 2,379 crore during the period under review, as against Rs 2,053 crore in the year-ago period. In a separate statement, the company said its operational capacity grew at 35 per cent year-on-year to 10,934 MW with greenfield addition of 2,848 MW renewable capacity, including 2,418 MW solar and 430 MW wind projects. With this, AGEL became the first company in India to cross the 10,000 MW <keyword id="19895602" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="renewable-energy" source="keywords">renewable energy</keyword> capacity. AGEL's 10,934 MW operational portfolio will power more than 5.8 million homes and avoid about 21 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. The sale of energy increased 47 per cent year-on-year to 21,806 million units in FY24, primarily backed by strong capacity addition, consistent solar CUF (capacity utilisation factor) and improved wind and hybrid CUF. The revenue from power supply rose 23 per cent to Rs 1,575 crore from Rs 1,941 crore earlier. <keyword id="19919864" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Adani-Green-Energy" source="keywords">Adani Green Energy</keyword> Ltd Chief Executive Officer Amit Singh said, "We have deployed the first 2 GW of the 30 GW of renewable capacity under construction at Khavda in just 12 months of breaking ground. "Our highest capacity addition of 2.8 GW in FY24 demonstrates our strong execution capabilities, and we are confident of continuing the momentum." The company aims to commission at least 5 GW of hydro-pumped storage projects by 2030, and set a higher target of 50 GW RE capacity by 2030, which will contribute towards India's non-fossil fuel capacity target of 500 GW, he said. AGEL further said it has commenced construction work on its first hydro pumped storage project (PSP) of 500 MW on the Chitravathi river. The project is located at Peddakotla in Sri Sathya Sai district of Andhra Pradesh. The existing reservoir will act as the lower reservoir and the upper reservoir is to be developed. The generation capacity will be 500 MW with estimated 6.2 generation hours in a day. All necessary approvals, including the final DPR approval are in place and financial closure has been achieved for the project. Adani Green Energy Q4 net profit declines 39 pc to Rs 310 cr due to rising expenses

Indian Prime Minister <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Narendra+Modi">Narendra Modi</a> has vouched for 175 Gigawatts of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=renewable+energy">renewable energy</a> by 2022. He has also promised 12 GW of Power by the end of 2016 - three times the current capacity! In case you forgot, this was at the India Pavilion at the <keyword id="2389731" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Paris-Climate-Change-Conference">Paris Climate Change Conference</keyword>. 
 
Awesome as it might sound, that’s a tall claim. Even by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Narendra+Modi">Narendra Modi</a>’s standards. India’s <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=renewable+energy">renewable energy</a> capacity addition between 2002 and 2014 has been around 20% YoY. However, the total capacity remains only a fraction of the target. 
 
The big question now is, can India reach the ambitious target it has fixed for itself ahead of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Budget+2016">Budget 2016</a>? 
 
Let’s have a look at what the government has done in the sector so far! 
 
· The US has allowed a grant of $4 billion to push India’s <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=renewable+energy">Renewable energy</a> goals. 
· 266 GW worth commitments were received at the RE-Invest Conference held in February 2015. As many as 27 Banks are ready to finance 72 GW <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=renewable+energy">renewable energy</a> projects. · India has signed a MoU with Germany to promote <keyword id="6357019" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="solar-energy">solar energy</keyword>. As a part of this, Germany will allow low-interest loans in the range of 1 Billion Euro over the next 5 years. 
 
Most analysts don’t see a huge leap in terms of budget allocation for the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=renewable+energy">renewable energy</a> sector. The government’s investments, however, could be in the form of subsidies and tax-free bonds. It’s been doing that with rooftop solar panels for a while.

New Delhi, Mar 2 () State-owned power giant NTPC on Monday said the company - including its joint venture and arms - has achieved its annual commercial capacity addition target of 5,290 MW for 2019-20.This is also the largest ever commercial capacity addition for the group in a single year, NTPC said in a statement.The latest capacity additions are 250 MW unit of Barauni Thermal Power Station Stage-II (2 x 250 MW) and 800 MW unit of Darlipalli Super Thermal Power Station Stage-I (2 x 800 MW) with effect from March 1, 2020.In the current fiscal, NTPC has added commercial capacity at Gadarwara (800 MW), Lara (800 MW), Tanda (660 MW), Khargone (660 MW), Barauni (250 MW) and Darlipalli (800 MW) plants.These additions contribute to a total of 3,970 MW of commercial capacity addition on a standalone basis for the NTPC.Further, the plants under JVs and subsidiaries of the NTPC added 1,320 MW capacity (Meja-660 MW and Nabinagar- 660 MW) in the current fiscal, thereby taking the overall commercial capacity addition to 5,290 MW in FY 2019-20.Present installed capacity of NTPC is 58,156 MW comprising of 55 NTPC stations (24 Coal-based stations, 7 combined cycle gas/liquid fuel based stations, 2 hydro-based station, 1 wind-based station), 10 joint venture stations (9 coal-based and one gas-based) and 11 renewable energy projects. Fossil fuels contribute directly to climate change, and they have a direct human cost as well. Increasing renewable energy capacity in every market around the globe is vital to addressing these problems and turning the tide on climate change. It is clear that renewables will be a crucial part of the energy mix in the future.While there are ongoing efforts to tackle the energy divide between the developed and developing worlds, the reality is that, in most countries, the renewable energy infrastructure is still significantly under-developed. This creates a major barrier to economic growth, and it does nothing to confront the environmental and health issues caused by traditional sources of energy.The private sector must be part of the solution, and businesses should work in partnership with government, non-profits, and local energy suppliers as they continue to build renewable capacity around the world. Committing to a renewable electricity future is the right move and makes strategic sense - for both global businesses and sustainable development. Many leading companies, including AB InBev, have already taken steps to do this.Why the global focus? It is true that in many cases, developing markets are leading the charge when it comes to investing in renewable energy sources. According to REN21, the Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century, by the end of 2015, China led all countries in renewable power capacity or generation.But there are more areas of the world where the incredible demand for renewable energy sources, which offer cleaner, and often cheaper power, is not yet met with enough supply. And building capacity comes with considerable risk: local regulations, currency or financing risks, a longer term timeframe, and other challenges can all be potential hurdles.The private sector has a great opportunity here to help convert this demand into action by reducing risks for energy providers and local officials. By initiating long-term agreements with clean energy providers, businesses can provide stable demand and the capital for further investment in local renewable energy infrastructure projects. In Mexico, for example, AB InBev recently struck a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Iberdrola to provide renewable electricity for our operations across the country. Iberdrola will build and install an on-shore wind farm in the state of Puebla. This should add more than 5% in additional renewable energy capacity to the country's current installed wind capacity, based on the International Renewable Energy Agency's estimate for the country's existing 2015 installed wind and solar capacity. And we are just one company. While many others are already working on similar initiatives, imagine what Mexico's renewable energy infrastructure could look like if every business working in the country made similar moves.The private sector not only has an opportunity to do this - we have an obligation. Businesses are a key source of global carbon emissions, which is one of the most significant contributors to climate change. It is therefore our responsibility to proactively contribute to climate change solutions - and by doing so, we really can make a difference.If each company commits to doing its part, we can have a real impact. RE100, a global coalition of businesses including AB InBev that have committed to 100% renewable power, estimated that in 2015, a relatively small group of 87 of their member companies had created demand for an incredible amount of renewable electricity: 107 terawatt hours, which is roughly the same amount of electricity used annually by entire country of the Netherlands.And it makes good business sense - in some markets, renewable energy purchased via PPAs is cheaper than grid-sourced electricity. These agreements can also reduce the risk from volatility in energy prices by locking in a fixed price of electricity for the purchasing company.Right now, the private sector has the chance to do something that would be meaningful and beneficial for both businesses and for citizens around the world, now and into the future. With energy playing such an integral role in the nation’s ecosystem, it’s not astonishing that India is <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-05-24/india-s-power-capacity-seen-overtaking-japan-this-year-chart" data-type="tilCustomLink">set</a> to have the second largest power capacity in Asia this year, according to reports. <a href="https://store.bmiresearch.com/index.php/india-power-report.html">BMI research</a>, a consultancy firm based out of London, has predicted that India’s enroute to overtake Japan in terms of power capacity. That being said, there’s a chance that India might even manage to overtake the US in terms of energy production, by 2020. Looking ahead In the current scenario, India’s 363.32 gigawatts of power generation is mainly dependent on coal. But by 2027, coal will remain as the primary source of energy, but India’s capacity to generate power will increase by 69%. Experts <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/economy/india-to-beat-japan-this-year-to-have-asias-second-largest-power-capacity/1181791/">credit</a> the velocity of the upcoming change to the drop in prices for solar and wind energy. That’s not surprising considering that solar energy is at a position where it’s actually <a href="https://qz.com/1272394/cheap-solar-and-wind-energy-prices-are-killing-indias-coal-power-plants/">cheaper</a> than coal, as of now. In fact, India is currently the <a href="http://www.business-standard.com/article/current-affairs/india-third-largest-solar-market-in-the-world-mercom-communications-118051500643_1.html">third largest</a> solar market in the world. They go on to add that despite growth in cleaner sources of energy like nuclear, non-hydro renewables and natural gas, the dominance of coal will not diminish. In fact, in the proposed 2027 scenario, it will still account for 75% of the mix. That’s not so bad if you consider the fact that it currently accounts for 85% of India’s installed capacity. The overall conclusion is based on the premise that India will manage to complete its goal of installing an additional 175 gigawatts of <keyword id="34553" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="renewable-energy">renewable energy</keyword> capacity by 2022 as per the <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/what-signing-the-paris-climate-change-treaty-means-for-india/story-RsDH1IAohQNEqRxb426YbM.html">Paris Climate Agreement 2015</a>. Move to the top 15 and 14 cities are still Indian. Yet, Karnataka, one of India’s southern states, is at the <a href="https://www.thebetterindia.com/134428/karnataka-india-electric-vehicle-revolution/">heart</a> of its Electric Vehicle (EV) revolution. Looking purely at numbers, in 2017, India’s carbon emissions actually <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/delhi/14-of-worlds-15-most-polluted-cities-in-india/articleshow/63993356.cms">increased</a> by 4.6%. But on the other hand, per capita emissions are at 1.8 tonnes, much lower than the global average of 4.2 tonnes. Although these predictions look optimistically towards the future, developers are <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/80bb18c2-1c5b-11e8-aaca-4574d7dabfb6">wary</a> of the effect that increasing taxes and tariffs may have. In effect, 3 gigawatts of capacity have already been cancelled. Either way, energy from renewable and non-renewable sources, alike, plays an important role in the Indian ecosystem, as it should for any developing economy.

New Delhi, Apr 8 () ReNew Power on Wednesday pledged Rs 20 crore to combat the COVID-19 pandemic in India. A sum of Rs 10 crore will be contributed to the PM-CARES Fund, Rs 5 crore will go towards the chief minister's relief fund in various states and the rest will be spent on several activities to directly help communities impacted by the lockdown and to bolster the health infrastructure, it said in a statement. As part of these activities, ReNew Power will focus on feeding migrant labourers, daily wage workers and locals around its sites spread across the country by distributing dry ration packets in conjunction with the local administration. The company will be working across its sites in the states of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra and will cover around 140 villages. Additionally, ReNew is adopting a village in Haryana, where around 350 vulnerable households will be provided with dry ration and hygiene kits. ReNew employees, led by their CMD and other members of the senior management, are also contributing a part of their salary to fund various activities to fight COVID-19. ReNew Power's senior leadership team has also joined other corporate leaders from Gurgaon to provide critical support to the authorities, including distributing PPE kits for frontline healthcare providers, helping hospitals with ventilator supplies, meals and dry ration for affected communities. The company's Chairman and Managing Director Sumant Sinha said, "ReNew Power is already at the forefront of the battle against COVID-19 by keeping its clean power generating sites operational amidst the lockdown and ensuring regular power supply to people from more than 100 sites across the country. "But we all know that these difficult times require us to act beyond the call of duty to assist the government with financial as well as infrastructure support to ensure that it is equipped to fight this disease. As the nation navigates these uncharted waters, we hope that our endeavour to help equip the hospitals and their staff with the right medical equipment will strengthen local efforts in tackling this emergency." India's renewable energy sector could potentially employ around one million people by 2030, which would be ten times more than the existing workforce of an estimated 1.1 lakh employed by the sector, according to an independent study released on Thursday by the <keyword id="3502332" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="council-on-energy" source="Orion">Council on Energy</keyword>, <keyword id="3502333" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="environment-and-water" source="Orion">Environment and Water</keyword> (CEEW), <keyword id="172147" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Natural-Resources-Defense-Council" source="Orion">Natural Resources Defense Council</keyword> (NRDC) and Skill Council for Green Jobs (SCGJ). The study "India's Expanding Clean Energy Workforce" highlighted that most of the new jobs would be generated by small-scale renewable energy projects such as rooftop solar and mini and micro-grid systems compared to utility or large-scale projects like solar parks. The CEEW-NRDC-SCGJ analysis also highlighted the adverse impact of the pandemic on employment in the renewable energy sector. In comparison to 12,400 new workers employed in the sector in FY19, only 5,200 new workers were employed in FY20 and 6400 were employed in FY21, it said. In FY21, a majority of the new workers were employed in the rooftop solar segment where annual capacity additions grew by nine per cent over FY20 and accounted for 1.4 GW capacity, it added. The study further noted that India has successfully trained 78,000 people under the Suryamitra training program, between 2015 and 2017, to improve the availability of skilled workers for clean energy projects. "The upcoming Union Budget must especially focus on scaling up rooftop solar, mini and micro grid systems, and domestic solar manufacturing to maximise the employment opportunities in the sector," Dr Arunabha Ghosh, CEO, CEEW said.
