The Ministry of Labour and Employment recently directed the Employees' Provident Fund Organization (<keyword id="19966712" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="EPFO" source="keywords">EPFO</keyword>) to ensure the activation of UAN (<keyword id="20789489" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="universal-account-number" source="keywords">Universal Account Number</keyword>) via Aadhar-based OTP. The outreach is part of announcements made during the Union Budget 2024-25, which aim to maximize the net of beneficiaries under the Employment Linked Incentive (ELI) Scheme. The central government has already directed concerned ministries and departments to ensure that payment of all subsidies and incentives under all welfare schemes occurs via the Aadhar Payment Bridge and that 100% biometric Aadhar authentication is achieved. Notably, Aadhaar-based verification eliminates the need for producing multiple documents to prove one's identity. In the first stage, all employers must complete <keyword id="24089674" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="UAN-activation" source="keywords">UAN activation</keyword> through Aadhar-based OTP for all employees who've joined the company in the current financial year by November 30, 2024. Starting with their latest recruits, employers will have to finish this process for all their employees. As per the budget announcements, the government will implement 3 schemes for 'Employment Linked Incentive' as part of the Prime Minister's package. These will be based on enrollment in the EPFO and focus on recognition of first-time employees and support to employees and employers. The ELI Scheme aims to create over 2 crore jobs in the country in 2 years. This will significantly contribute to increasing employment opportunities and enhancing livelihoods. UAN activation provides employees with seamless access to EPFO's comprehensive online services, enabling them to efficiently manage their Provident Fund (PF) accounts, view and download PF passbooks, submit online claims for withdrawals, advances, or transfers, update personal details, and track claims in real-time. This allows employees 24/7 access to EPFO services from the comfort of their homes, eliminating the need for physical visits to EPFO offices. For the uninitiated, UAN is a 12-digit number allotted to each member of EPFO (Employee Provident Fund Organization). Think of UAN as a single-point number that brings together multiple member IDs that have been allocated to a particular employee. In September this year, EPFO added 18.81 lakh members, registering a 9.33% YoY growth.

As we have seen, buying an index fund can also give you exposure to different sectors like financial services, auto, pharma and so on. “Auto for instance is at the cusp of a technology change. We are seeing a proliferation of electric vehicles (EVs) as a technology, which can be a new driver altogether. But if you do not know who will win, the next best thing you can do is to buy the entire index,” says Varadarajan. For this reason, Varadarajan believes that to say that index funds are for beginner investors is an oversimplification. “Index funds can help even the savvy investor. He may want to manage some part of his portfolio very actively wherein he knows the bets he is taking, the company, the management etc. However, if there are opportunities that are coming at a sector level and it is a sunrise sector, and you are betting on a large part of the sector through an index fund, then you will benefit over a period of time without having to worry who will be the winner etc” he says. How much allocation one should have towards index funds would vary from investor to investor. “If there is 70% allocation towards equity, the investor should deploy some 15-20% in passively managed funds,” says Parekh. What to look for when selecting an index fund Before choosing an index fund, one should consider the following factors. Select the proper index: Since now many index funds are available, the first thing is to choose where he wants to invest, whether he wants to track a market capitalisation or sector and so on. Expense ratio: Look for funds with low expense ratios to minimise costs and maximise returns. Tracking Error: “Assess the fund's ability to closely track its benchmark index over time to ensure it effectively mirrors market performance,” says Shresta. Historical Performance: While past performance doesn't guarantee future results, reviewing the fund's historical performance relative to its benchmark can provide insights into its tracking ability and consistency. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Starboard Value has taken a $1 billion stake in drugmaker Pfizer.</li><li>The hedge fund, headed by Jeff Smith, has become one of the most feared activist investors.</li></ul>Pharmaceuticals giant Pfizer got a wake up call Sunday evening when one of Wall Street's most feared activist investors revealed a stake in the company.Starboard Value <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/starboard-activist-significant-stake-in-drugmaker-pfizer-2024-10">informed the drugmaker</a> it had taken a position in the firm valued at $1 billion.An activist's aims, whether that's pushing for breakup, M&amp;A, or cost reductions, vary depending on the target. Starboard's turnaround strategy is not yet clear, but Pfizer's share price and revenues have tumbled from the record highs achieved during the pandemic's heights, and Starboard, led by its 52-year-old cofounder Jeff Smith, has a long history of wielding minority stakes to extract board seats and profits from name-brand companies.Over the past decade, Smith has more than doubled the hedge fund's assets under management to $8.5 billion by taking on targets including Salesforce, Starbucks, and the owner of Olive Garden. In that time Starboard has gained a reputation for making life uncomfortable for — and sometimes jettisoning — executives and directors who resist his overtures for change.Pfizer, with a market cap north of $160 billion, is among the largest companies Starboard's Smith has ever targeted. Still, investors seemed to applaud news of its investments on Monday, sending Pfizer's stock up about 3% in morning trading, adding nearly $5 billion to the company's market cap.Moreover, Starboard has reportedly secured support from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/health/pharma/activist-starboard-value-takes-1-billion-stake-in-pfizer-89591cb6?mod=hp_lead_pos4">former Pfizer executives</a> Ian Read and Frank D'Amelio for its campaign.Starboard has experience across the spectrum but is especially good at instilling discipline at the board level and "improving margins and cutting costs at companies that are bloated," said Ken Squire, the founder and president of 13D Monitor, a research firm specializing in shareholder activism.Starboard declined to comment.<h2 id="44e54273-f674-45fa-9c95-4d5153293525">Who is Jeff Smith?</h2>Investor activism has exploded in recent years. The 147 new campaigns globally in the first half of 2024 is a record, building on the all-time high 252 campaigns reached in 2023, according to a July report from investment bank Lazard.Starboard has become one of the most formidable names in the business, even if Smith hasn't yet reached the name recognition of activist investors like Paul Singer (Elliott Management), Carl Icahn (Icahn Enterprises), and Dan Loeb (Third Point Capital).Smith launched Starboard in 2011, spinning it out of a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cowen.com/news/ramius-announces-spin-off-of-value-and-opportunity-business/">small unit at Cowen Group</a> along with a couple of partners, including Peter Feld. Early targets included AOL, where Starboard lost a proxy battle but agitated for changes that boosted the company's stock by 250%, and Office Depot, where Starboard won three board seats, according to <a target="_blank" href="https://fortune.com/2014/12/03/starboard-capitals-jeff-smith-activist-investor-darden-restaurants/">a 2014 story in Fortune</a>.Starboard put corporate America on notice with its campaign in 2013 against Darden Restaurants, the owner of Olive Garden and Longhorn Steakhouse, among other dining chains. With less than a 10% stake Smith replaced the entire 12-person board and assumed the role of chairman. By the time Smith stepped down in 2016, Darden <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/activists-reap-olive-garden-bounty-1459902161">stock had gained nearly 50%</a> and Starboard had accrued more than $500 million in profits.One of the hedge fund's greatest claims to fame involved its <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/activists-reap-olive-garden-bounty-1459902161">improvements to Olive Garden's breadsticks</a>, which Starboard predicted could save the company up to $5 million a year, according to a Wall Street Journal report from 2015.In 2022, Starboard took a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/salesforce-profit-margins-starboard-value-turnaround-2023-8">stake in software giant Salesforce</a>, urging the company to cut costs and improve margins. The hedge fund <a target="_blank" href="https://techcrunch.com/2021/09/09/box-wins-proxy-board-battle-with-activist-">lost a proxy battle</a> with software maker Box in 2021. And in 2019 it dropped a bid to have Bristol-Myers Squibb scrap its merger with Celgene after failing to win over <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/03/29/starboard-drops-out-of-celgene-fight-as-proxy-firms-back-bristol-myers-bid.html">two major proxy advisory firms</a>.In total, Starboard has initiated 151 activist campaigns, which have generated an average return of 25%, according to data from 13D Monitor.<h2 id="fc0d4b73-d1a3-4a74-a386-7908a74761a7">Ignore at your peril</h2>More recently, the hedge fund has taken positions in dating app owner Match Group, software company Autodesk, and Starbucks.Squire said Smith has a reputation as intense but intelligent and candid. Starboard "can be friendly, but if they're ignored they can also be feared — and they can get tough."In August, Starbucks replaced its CEO amid a campaign from Starboard and Elliott Management.Given Smith's record of winning corporate concessions — or prying them away by force — Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla may be next in the hot seat. Bourla took over in 2019 and guided the drugmaker through the pandemic, boosting annual revenues to $100 billion in 2022 thanks to sales of its COVID-19 vaccine and the antiviral treatment Paxlovid.But missteps ensued. Pfizer misjudged future demand for COVID remedies, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/health/pharma/pfizer-drug-company-cost-cutting-2da7524d?mod=article_inline">according to a WSJ report</a>, and revenues cratered. It has since undertaken multibillion-dollar cost cutting campaigns.For its next act, Pfizer executives wagered heavily on cancer treatments. It shelled out $43 billion last year to acquire Seagen, a Washington-based biotech company focused on developing novel cancer medicines. It expects Seagen's products to yield $3.1 billion in revenue this year and $10 billion in annual revenues by 2030.Still, its share price has fallen more than 50% since reaching an all-time high in December 2021.Starboard's targets cut across industries, including 23 campaigns in the healthcare sector, according to 13D Monitor. Besides Bristol-Myers Squibb, other prior targets include CVS and medical records and technology company Cerner.Pfizer did not respond to a request for comment. <h4 id="cbcdd8ad-013b-426e-8431-6c2b54c6859d">Greatest hits</h4><ul><li>2012: Starboard is credited with spurring AOL CEO Tim Armstrong to sell assets, including the sale of 800 patents to Microsoft for $1.1 billion.</li><li>2013: Starboard secured three seats on the board of Office Depot, which later agreed to merge with Staples before the Federal Trade Commission blocked the merger, citing antitrust reasons.</li><li>2014: Starboard replaced the entire board of Darden Restaurants, owner of Olive Garden. Meet Jeff Smith, the hedge-fund investor taking on Pfizer

<ul class="summary-list"><li>My 8-year-old loves Lego blocks and has been asking for years to go to <keyword id="23618278" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Legoland" source="keywords">Legoland</keyword>.</li><li>As a <keyword id="21623863" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="single-mom" source="keywords">single mom</keyword>, finances can be tight, and I needed to figure out how to make it happen.</li></ul>For years, my 8-year-old son has said he wants to be a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lego-master-builders-life-size-sculptures-2016-7">master builder for The Lego Group</a>. So many of our bedtime stories were about Legoland, and I wanted to take him there as badly as he wanted to visit. It reminded me of visiting SeaWorld as a teenager and being inspired to study marine biology. However, as a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/having-cleaning-person-takes-up-budget-but-its-worth-it-2022-4">single mom, finances can be tight</a>, and I knew it would take some strategic planning and scrimping to make the trip happen. Although some parents are willing to go into debt for their dream vacations, I'm not. I've always valued experiences over material things, but not if it breaks the bank. <h2>We created a budget for our trip</h2>In the weeks leading up to our trip, I asked my son to help create our itinerary with one activity per day. He had been really excited to hear a friend describe how his savings account grew money over time. So when we sold his bike for $80 early in the summer, I set the money aside in my high-yield savings account for his spending money. As for the trip itself, there were a few things I could take advantage of. I was able to cash in a couple of bonds that my grandfather purchased for me decades ago, I had <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-start-collecting-air-miles-2017-9">air miles I could use for the short trip</a> from Oregon to California, and we had access to a family timeshare. Had we not had some help with these expenses, I likely would have shortened the trip or continued saving for another year. I focused on finding deals for the rental car, food, and attractions and saved in those areas by visiting mid-week and buying tickets that included meals. My one splurge was an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/legoland-new-york-resort-hotel-family-review-2023-10">overnight stay at the Legoland hotel</a>, which was completely worth it when I saw my son's smile as we walked into our Ninjago-themed room and played with the Lego bricks in the pool. <h2>We talked about how much money we had to spend each day</h2>We <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/things-new-yorker-found-surprising-about-visiting-california-photos-2021-12">landed in San Diego</a> early Monday afternoon, dropped off our bags, and headed to Trader Joe's to grab snacks and breakfast fixings for the week. My son was amazed by everything he saw — the palm trees, the playground we spotted across the street, and our big studio room. I thought back to the many trips I'd taken over the years while enjoying seeing the city through his eyes. My son had a nice sum to spend during the week. He'd been saving his allowance, and I matched the proceeds from the sale of his bike. He had earned a meager amount of interest in the savings account, and we talked about how, had the money stayed in the account longer, he would have earned more. He wanted a $150 Lego set at Legoland, so he knew he had limited funds to spend elsewhere. At the start of each day, we discussed how much he had to spend, and then he carefully made a decision at each attraction. Despite this, there were some additional requests for me to buy things, and although I stayed firm on most, I did give in to some, like Ninjago pajamas, which he needed anyway. He loved wearing them around the park the next day. Every place we went had souvenir penny machines. I've collected these since I was a kid and was excited when Noah asked to get them, happily contributing the 50 cents or a dollar it took for the little memento. I stood behind him and thought about which imprint I'd choose as he carefully picked his own, like the Komodo dragon at the San Diego Zoo or the dolphins at SeaWorld. <h2>We slowed down and enjoyed free things</h2>As our energy decreased in the waning days of our trip, we slowed down. At first, I'd really wanted to maximize our time and take in all that we could, hoping to "get our money's worth," but by Friday, we needed a break. A late start wouldn't hurt our visit to SeaWorld, which was open until 8 p.m. We hung out in our studio, eating breakfast and lunch there before heading out. It was a nice reminder that vacation doesn't always have to be about seeing and doing everything; it can also be about relaxing. We spent our last day with friends, enjoying a hike overlooking La Jolla and eventually moving closer to the beach to watch the waves and sea lions. Our activity that day was another beautiful reminder that nature is free and entertaining in its own right. In the days following the trip, I felt exhausted by the daily money decisions yet relieved and satisfied that I navigated them. Creating meaningful moments doesn't require going into debt; instead, it can be about intention and focus on what's important. My son will never know how much I spent on that trip. What he'll remember is seeing the panda at the San Diego Zoo and driving the cars at Legoland. And that's exactly what I want him to remember. <ul><li>A good way to assess an old mutual fund is by tracking their performance over 5-20 years, say experts.</li><li>Funds like <keyword id="15355709" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sundaram-midcap-fund" source="Orion">Sundaram Midcap Fund</keyword>, <keyword id="13357754" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nippon-india-growth-fund" source="Orion">Nippon India Growth Fund</keyword>, <keyword id="12834265" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="quant-active-fund" source="Orion">Quant Active Fund</keyword> and more have given over 16% returns per annum for the last twenty years.</li><li>An investor who had done an SIP for ₹10,000 for 20 years in any of the top ten best rewarding old funds, would now be sitting on over ₹1.5 crore. </li></ul>India now has 40 million people who invest in mutual funds. If you’re not one of those, and want to err on the side of caution, you can choose funds that demonstrated a good run for over 20 years. According to a report by <keyword id="112363" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="value-research" source="Orion">Value Research</keyword>, ten mutual fund schemes have stood the test of time. Funds like Sundaram Midcap Fund, Nippon India Growth Fund, Quant Active Fund and more have given over 16% returns per annum for the last twenty years. “Some investment funds have weathered significant challenges including the 2008 subprime crisis, the 2013 taper tantrum, and the 2020 Covid induced lockdown,” said the Value Research report. It adds that while even very successful funds failed during the times, but a few of these ‘golden oldies’ survived the crises to give positive returns to their investors. The key to identifying such funds, Value Research says, is to track their long-term performance over 5-20 years. An investor who had done a systematic investment plan (SIP) for ₹10,000 for 20 years in any of these funds, would now be sitting on over ₹1.5 crore. If the investors would have increased their SIP amounts by 10% per annum, they would be sitting over ₹2.7 crore. flows into mutual funds. In September, inflows into SIPs hit an all-time high of ₹16,042.06 crore, according to Association of Mutual Funds of India (AMFI). It also said that the cumulative Assets Under Management (AUM) for the mutual fund industry stood at ₹46.58 lakh crore as of September end. Golden Oldies: The mutual fund schemes that have stood the test of market cycles over 20 years

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi's sovereign wealth funds have had a busy few years.</li><li>The funds have been on a huge investment spree beyond the Gulf, with tech a particular focus.</li></ul>On the global stage, few have been as active in flaunting their cash in recent years as the Middle East's most powerful money men.Leaders of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/saudi-arabia-public-investment-fund-pif-sports-influence-pga-liv-2023-6">Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund</a> (PIF) and Abu Dhabi's Mubadala — sovereign wealth funds that oversee assets worth more than $1 trillion combined — have been on a busy investment spree beyond the Gulf region to stake a claim in whatever takes their fancy.Data <a target="_blank" href="https://globalswf.com/reports/2024gsr#market-update-1h-2024-1">published last month by GlobalSWF</a>, a platform tracking sovereign wealth fund activity, found that over half the $96 billion invested by state-backed funds globally in the first six months of 2024 came from Middle Eastern funds.A particular focus for these funds built on the back of petrodollars has been to build ownership and influence in the tech sector. Mandates to diversify their economies at home through initiatives like <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vision-2030-saudi-arabia-plan-future-proof-oil-economy-2023-8">Vision 2030</a> have created incentives to bet on those with an eye to the future.In 2017, both funds made a collective commitment of $60 billion to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-softbank-vision-funds-awful-year-former-employees-rival-vcs-2022-12">SoftBank's then-newly minted Vision Fund</a>, the world's biggest venture capital vehicle that would go on to transform the world of startup investing with bets on companies like TikTok owner ByteDance and Uber.More recently, PIF and Mubadala have been busy making tech bets of their own, pouring billions of dollars into everything from electric vehicle companies to fintech startups seeking to shake up the world of finance.Not all of them seem to be going to plan.<h2 id="9c0825b9-c7bd-475a-b6f2-4a91031a1215">Lucid action</h2><div type="image" title="MBS" height="658" width="1024" msid="112371997" hostid="261" sizebytes="60394"></div>Over the past week, PIF and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/abu-dhabi-mubadala-sovereign-wealth-fund-investing-in-software-ai-2023-7">Mubadala</a> have been busy figuring out what to do when their unbridled ambitions for tech companies face reality.On Monday, Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund pulled up its money truck for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lucid-chinese-automakers-years-behind-tesla-electric-vehicles-elon-musk-2024-5">Lucid, the California-based Tesla rival</a> it has 60% ownership of, with a fresh $1.5 billion commitment aimed at helping the company through a tough period.<a target="_blank" href="https://ir.lucidmotors.com/news-releases/news-release-details/lucid-group-inc-announces-public-investment-fund-commitment-15">According to Lucid</a>, the commitment will see PIF affiliate company Ayar purchase $750 million in convertible preferred stock and provide a $750 million loan facility at a critical moment for the firm.In March, CEO Peter Rawlinson told the Financial Times that although Lucid has sufficient funds to see it through to next year, it was spending about $1 billion a quarter in its mission to deliver luxury EVs to the market.The heavy spending needed to build a strong EV brand hasn't been helped by a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-sales-miss-ev-slowdown-new-wave-customers-2024-4">global slowdown in demand for clean energy vehicles</a>, as inflation and high interest rates prompt consumers to spend more cautiously.The Lucid Air, marketed as "a superior long-range electric sedan" that can hit 60 miles an hour in 1.89 seconds, starts at $69,900.<div type="image" title="Lucid Air Sapphire" height="681" width="1024" msid="112372000" hostid="261" sizebytes="71938"></div>Although Lucid now has a new lease of life from the Saudis, Rawlinson acknowledged back in March that it was dangerous to expect the state's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ft.com/content/356479d2-f08b-4ab1-9233-3a2bc49596ff">"bottomless wealth"</a> would be a constant fallback. How long the Saudis want to stick around remains to be seen.PIF has also been pushed to offer a lifeline to Magic Leap.<a target="_blank" href="https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/09320795/filing-history">UK filings</a> released for the augmented reality company on August 2 said that the Saudi fund, which has been majority owner since 2022, put $750 million into the struggling business from the start of last year through to July 2024.The filings also said that "based on the most recent forecasts," the company would need to raise funds again before "late August 2024 and again in January 2025 and June 2025" to meet financial obligations.<h2 id="fc65cabf-4f30-4a75-9b64-8c22a87d8815">Rescue mode</h2>Will the Saudis be the ones to plug that financing hole? If it plans on sticking with Magic Leap in the long term, it'll be aware of just how much support the firm will need, as it's spent 14 years struggling to get its vision for immersive technology off the ground.Abu Dhabi's Mubadala appears to have been in rescue mode this past week too.Reports from the Financial Times and Bloomberg have shone a light on efforts being made by the sovereign wealth fund to boost returns in European startups it has invested billions of dollars in.Several of these nascent tech companies, such as insurance firm WeFox, have been bruised by shifting sentiment in the markets in recent years. The lofty valuations they secured when interest rates remained low have taken a hit, triggering moves such as restructurings and leadership changes, the reports said.It's worth noting that both Mubadala and the PIF remain in strong positions overall. In May, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.mubadala.com/en/news/mubadala-investment-company-reports-2023-financial-results">Mubadala announced</a> that its assets under management in 2023 had risen 9.4% from the year before. In July, PIF said it swung to a profit last year after making a loss in 2022.Still, both funds will be aware that they have embarked on a globe-trotting mission to establish a reputation for themselves as sophisticated investors capable of making shrewd moves.Seeing their tech bets fall apart will be a tough reality to face.

Middle East wealth funds are scrambling to rescue their big bets on the future

<ul><li>In the hotly-contested debate around active versus passively-managed schemes, often many investors miss the woods for the trees.</li><li>The beauty of passive investing is that it does not suffer from any emotional bias, recency bias or any other prejudice that afflicts humans.</li><li>Passive products such as index funds and ETFs are better-suited for tactical allocation in a portfolio. </li></ul> If mutual funds are a cricket team, actively-managed funds would be the star batsmen while passively-managed schemes would be the all-rounders. In the hotly-contested debate around actives versus passives, often, many investors miss the woods for the trees. In a seasoned portfolio, both active and passive products have their respective place because of the inherent design. Yet, the narrative often gets hijacked and becomes a question of either or, instead of deciding the choice of the right product for the right investor. Given the dynamic nature of markets and economic cycles, it is impossible to guess the winning asset class/theme/sector consistently. Furthermore, there may be prolonged cycles of outperformance and underperformance of these investments, and thus difficult to project the winner. So, investors should ideally have a mix of investment plays in their portfolios through active and passive products. While domestic markets have been stuck in a range for quite some time, tactical bets have played out in sectors such as banking, public sector undertaking (PSU), infrastructure and consumption sectors. This has brought to the fore the utility of passive product allocation when used tactically. Here, for tactical plays, one can do it largely through passive products such as thematic/sectoral index funds and ETFs or exchange-traded funds, and core plays through actively-managed diversified funds that can generate better investment outcomes over the long-term. The beauty of passive investing is that it does not suffer from any emotional bias, recency bias or any other prejudice that afflicts humans. Since portfolio construction and maintenance is rule-based, passive products give simple pure-play exposures to sectors/themes at the lowest cost possible. This fits well with the overall tactical allocation principle and dynamic nature of product requirement to exploit short-lived market opportunities. Tactical plays Tactical asset allocation is practised by many investors. This is done by smart shifts in a certain percentage of assets held in various categories to take advantage of strong market sectors/asset classes. Such a strategy allows investors to create extra value by taking advantage of certain situations in the market. Passive products such as index funds and ETFs are better-suited for tactical allocation in a portfolio on account of various reasons as listed below: One, passive products track markets efficiently. There is no time lost in tweaking a portfolio, since indices get rebalanced at defined intervals and positions can be taken quickly. Two, specific themes/sectors often offer a short window of opportunity for tactical allocations. Especially, when it comes to sectoral allocation, timing matters and for this type of allocation one can choose a passive offering. Healthcare as a theme saw a sharp rally during the pandemic years. The S&amp;P BSE Healthcare index delivered 61.45% and 20.87% respectively in calendar years 2020 and 2021. However, come 2022 and 2023 (year-to-date), the index delivered a negative return to the tune of 12.5% and 13% respectively. If an investor had initiated investments in 2020 and held on to it till date, almost half of the gains accumulated till 2021 would have been wiped out. This shows the importance of getting both the entry and the exit right in sectoral/thematic investments. Three, for commodities investing, a savvy investor can consider the ETF route as it efficiently tracks the price of the underlying commodity. So, if an investor is bullish on, say, the outlook of gold or silver, instead of physically buying or storing these commodities, he can just own these in ETF form and enter and exit the position with ease thereby boosting portfolio return. Four, passive smart-beta offerings can be harnessed to play a market trend. If the market is momentum based, one of the easiest ways to participate is through momentum-based smart beta offerings. In this manner, you can participate in the trend without disturbing the core of your long-term portfolio. Similarly, a knowledgeable investor can tactically make use of smart-beta offerings to play a particular style of investing. To conclude, over a complete market cycle, there will be times when active management triumphs and at other times, a passive approach may outperform. An ideal portfolio should be one which captures both these trends. Instead of pitting one strategy against the other, harness the power each of these approaches offer. At all times, use an informed eye to decide when and how much to skew towards passive. If unsure, seek help from a financial advisor. Synology bets big on the Indian market amid strong growth, growing demand

That means trying to lower the likelihood of things that could kill you, like heart disease or other "main killers," he said. So his advice is to schedule regular checkups and vaccinations and manage overall risks. You also want to develop habits that can add years to your lifespan. Thorp called these "magic bullets," which include regular exercise and a healthy diet.Thorp's exercise routine includes aerobic exercises like walking or a short jog and core strength-building activities. At 91, he can do two chinups and 15 pushups. He told Bloomberg he stays away from the "typical American diet" because it can lead to weight gain and cause several diseases. Thorp, who's 155 pounds, said he's only gained 2 pounds in 70 years.Additionally, Thorp said he regularly takes <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/5-supplements-for-longevity-and-anti-aging-expert-recommendations-2023-12">four of five supplements</a>. He also takes the medication Finasteride for his enlarged prostate, which has the added benefit of preventing his hair from thinning. The reality in recent years is most don't, but that hasn't stopped firms from touting themselves as different from the rest.But with portable alpha, hedge funds are tying themselves to something they've pledged they are better than. There is a rationale to that shift in philosophy — the broader market has been booming — but teaming up with a perceived rival poses a risk.What happens if the hedge fund's portion of the portable alpha strategy is what pulls returns down? It's one thing if you can't beat the market. It's another when you pair your strategy with the market and end up being the one that can't pull its own weight.Although, it's not like hedge funds have much choice. Institutional investors are getting much more particular with where they park their money.
