Accurately named the ‘Stickman’, <keyword id="46161" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Disney">Disney</keyword>’s robot can perform a range of stunts on the foundation of inertial motion-sensing technology.<br /><br />Stickman is made up of three lengths that helps the robot fold into a tuck and then expand again before it sticks the landing. More than that, the folding and unfolding features helps the robot adjust its rate of spin. <br /><br />Its three laser range finders -- leading, center and trailing -- help the Stickman determine how close or far away the ground is, as it falls. <p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul><li><strong>Disney is developing humanoid robots capable of being catapulted into the air to perform stunts, according to TechCrunch.</strong></li><li><strong>The project is called "Stuntronics," and it sprang out of a research experiment called "Stickman."</strong></li><li><strong>The robots can be used as stunt doubles for more delicate animatronics during Disneyland shows.</strong></li></ul><p><br>Disney is making humanoid robots that can perform mind-boggling stunts in midair, <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2018/06/28/disney-imagineering-has-created-autonomous-robot-stunt-doubles/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to TechCrunch.</a></br></p><p>Disneyland parks have incorporated animatronics into their displays for decades, but with its new project, "Stuntronics," Disney hopes to take performing robotics to the next level.</p><p>The project was born of <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFtNcGnroa8">a research experiment named "Stickman."</a> Stickman was a robot who was able to perform acrobatic flips, and was essentially just an articulated pole.</p><p>With Stuntronics the aim was to create a humanoid robot which could act as a stunt double for other "hero" animatronic figures in the park.</p><p>The robot can be flung through the air, controlling its pose, rotation, and center of mass. It can even strike a superhero pose mid-flight. Disney has made flying stunt robots that can pose like superheroes in midair

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Microsoft's multibillion-dollar bet on OpenAI could be rocket fuel for its cloud business.</li><li>Cloud, increasingly important to Microsoft, Amazon, and Google, is slowing down in the short term.</li></ul><p>Microsoft opened Wednesday with a 4% share price drop after the firm gave a tough outlook for its cloud business during third-quarter earnings Tuesday. But the company has a longer-term strategic weapon that could help it win the cloud wars: its once-in-a-generation bet on OpenAI.</p><p>Reporting fiscal Q1 earnings on Tuesday, Microsoft forecast that its cloud business Azure would slow by 4-5 percentage points in the coming quarter. The deceleration is down to customers shying away from expensive cloud deals in a tough macroeconomic environment. <a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?postID=63d13f3c310b0b393b689e5f&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.microsoft.com%2Fen-us%2Finvestor%2Fearnings%2FFY-2023-Q1%2Fpress-release-webcast" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">The unit generated $25.7 billion in revenue</a> in its most recent quarter, up 24% year on year. </p><p>Cloud computing has taken off over the last decade as a way for blue-chip businesses to store massive amounts of information on servers run by the major tech firms, rather than on-premise. For the most part, it's faster, more secure, and flexible.  </p><p>It's also a huge revenue driver for Big Tech, whatever their public spiel about self-driving cars and acrobatic robots. An outage at market leader Amazon's AWS can take down <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/aws-outage-causes-problems-for-slack-coinbase-epic-games-store-2021-12">large swathes of the internet.</a> Any hint of a slowdown in growth for Microsoft's Azure, Amazon's AWS, and Google Cloud tends to provoke analyst angst. </p><p>Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella — who once ran its cloud division — accordingly provoked some of this angst as he warned that the firm's Azure customers were beginning to "optimize" their cloud spend after a pandemic binge.</p><p>But, he added: "We fundamentally believe that the next big platform wave is going to be AI and we strongly also believe a lot of the enterprise value gets created by just being able to catch these waves and then have those waves impact every part of our tech stack and also create new solutions and new opportunities."</p><p>Even if there are immediate challenges for cloud growth, Microsoft sees its OpenAI bet, reported to be worth $10 billion, as a bigger strategic move. As a gamble, it looks smarter than, say, the metaverse.</p><h2><strong>Armed the deadliest weapon yet</strong></h2><p>In a <a href="https://blogs.microsoft.com/blog/2023/01/23/microsoftandopenaiextendpartnership/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">blogpost announcing the deal</a>, Microsoft noted that its investment in the developer behind the generative AI chatbot would help it build "leading AI infrastructure" for Azure. In practice, this means developing cloud technologies that are purpose-built for AI, giving it an edge at a time when excitement among developers for AI is peaking. </p><p>Microsoft's gamble, essentially, is that everyone will need and use artificial intelligence in the near future — and that means increased demand and cash for the computing power to train AI models.</p><p>A research note on Wednesday from Jefferies analysts noted Microsoft "sees AI innovation as driving growth for Azure AI services," with revenue from Azure ML, a cloud segment dedicated to training AI models, increasing more than 100% over the past five quarters. </p><p>Microsoft also suggested in its post that it will make Azure the "exclusive cloud provider" of OpenAI's research and products.</p><p>All of this is "mostly about cementing Azure's edge over AWS" as Microsoft "has exclusive access to the hottest AI property on the market right now," according to Richard Windsor, founder of research firm Radio Free Mobile.</p><p>Windsor thinks that much of the money <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-openai-investment-the-smartest-1-billion-ever-spent-2023-1">Microsoft is committing to OpenAI</a> will revolve around "building custom infrastructure"  to run OpenAI's technology in an efficient way, given that "during busy times, response times increase materially" for its scary-smart chatbot, ChatGPT. </p><p>The bet is that Azure could offer OpenAI to customers in a way that none of its rivals can immediately replicate.</p><p>"Should OpenAI's products become popular with clients, this will give Azure firepower in its quest to close the gap on AWS," he said. </p><h2><strong>The AI arms race</strong></h2><p>With cloud spend tightening, it's likely that Amazon and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-fears-ai-running-wild-but-it-is-too-late-2023-1">Google</a> will look to give their cloud divisions a shot in the arm too with AI to stay competitive. Amazon will want to retain its lead position, Google is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-cloud-ceo-thomas-kurian-strategy-alienates-staff-vps-2022-5?r=US&amp;IR=T">pursuing an aggressive growth plan</a>.</p><p>"This isn't a vacuum," said Bola Rotibi, chief of enterprise research at CCS Insight. "You can imagine Amazon is not going to be sitting on its laurels or waiting there for Microsoft to surpass it."</p><p> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/big-tech-predictions-for-2023-twitter-google-microsoft-amazon-dtc-2022-12">Cloud represents a growing slice of Big Tech's respective revenue pies</a>. Microsoft Cloud, which also includes revenue from Office 365 and other products as well as Azure, represented around 50% of the company's overall revenue. In Amazon's last earnings, AWS represented around 16% of its overall earnings, while Google Cloud's $6.9 billion in revenue at the end of the September quarter represented 10% of overall revenue.</p><p>These percentage figures are likely to get bigger.</p><p>In a research note on Tuesday, Wedbush analysts Dan Ives and John Katsingris wrote that cloud and the underlying Office ecosystem "is going to comprise a bigger and bigger piece of Redmond going forward and will ultimately spur growth and margins" despite the downturn.</p><p>"We believe the shift to cloud is still less than 50% penetrated and represents a massive opportunity for Nadella &amp; Co. going forward despite the dark storm clouds forming for FY23 in the uncertain macro backdrop," the Wedbush analysts said. </p><p>There is pressure right now on cloud spend, with Wedbush predicting some "larger cloud deals" in the financial sector will likely get downsized for Microsoft as companies rein in costs.</p><p>But the AI genie is out of the bottle, as evidenced by the proliferation of activity around ChatGPT. Indy makes plenty of mistakes, but he always keeps trying, even in the face of defeat. His determination and his tendency to make mistakes are Indy's two defining characteristics throughout the franchise. And the film introduces the audience to these qualities right from the start.</p><p>Now, compare that to the intro from "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider," a movie that borrowed heavily from "Indiana Jones." Chances are you forgot how this movie starts. To refresh your memory, Lara fights a giant robot. She's acrobatic and skilled at using pistols, but that's about the only thing we learn about her in the first five minutes. Or take "The Mummy," where, again, essentially the only thing we learn about the protagonist in his first scene is that he's good at shooting guns. So, what exactly is the intro to "Indiana Jones" doing differently from its imitators?</p><p>While the acting, directing, and editing are all superb, what really sets this opening sequence apart from most other films is that it's a self-contained story that's well structured. We meet Indiana Jones and watch him struggle through multiple obstacles to try and reach his goal. In fact, this opening sequence has a similar narrative arrangement to that of a feature-length film and actually fits perfectly into the format of a traditional three-act structure, a screenplay structure popularized by author Syd Field. The three-act structure expands upon the concept of beginning, middle, and end. Let's take a look at the entirety of "Star Wars: A New Hope" as an example:</p><ul><li>In act one, there's the beginning: setting up the story.</li><li>The inciting incident: an event that sets the story into motion.</li><li>The climax of act one: an event that signals that the protagonist's life will never be the same again.</li><li>In act two there's rising action: The protagonist is met with new challenges.</li><li>The midpoint: Something goes terribly wrong, altering the plans of the protagonist.</li><li>The climax of act two: The protagonist hits their lowest point.</li><li>In act three there's the climax: the most intense point, where the story's overarching conflict is on the brink of being resolved.</li><li>And finally, the resolution: wrapping up the story and leading towards closure.</li></ul><p>Now, most <keyword id="406" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Movies">movies</keyword>, including "Star Wars" and "Indiana Jones," tell their three-act stories over the course of their 90-plus-minute run times. What makes the opening sequence of "Raiders of the Lost Ark" so special is that it also creates a mini three-act-structure story in only 10 minutes:</p><ul><li>The camera follows a mysterious character and his porters making their way through a jungle.</li><li>One of the porters pulls a gun on the mysterious character, but the man uses a whip to disarm him. We're officially introduced to Indiana Jones.</li><li>After entering the temple, Indy intentionally activates a trap, which reveals the skeleton of his former rival.</li><li>Indiana and Satipo forge deeper into the cave, navigating their way past more traps.</li><li>Indiana Jones retrieves the golden idol but accidentally triggers a trap, and the temple starts to collapse behind him.</li><li>Indy is betrayed by Satipo, and the temple doors start to close.</li><li>Just when Indy thinks that he's in the clear, a giant boulder starts to hurdle towards him.</li><li>Indy is alive, but he has to hand over the idol and his gun to another one of his rivals.</li></ul><p>By writing the opening of "Raiders of the Lost Ark" as a mini-movie, it serves as a teaser for the rest of the film and allows the audience to get to know what kind of world they're about to explore.</p><p>Compare that to the structure of the opening of "Tomb Raider," which only has a beginning and a climax, nothing in between. Her obstacle stays the same the entire time, the killer robot, and she never really changes her approach to defeating it, shooting it with her guns. On the other hand, the temple raid presents Indy with a plethora of obstacles, and we get to watch as he comes up with solutions for each new problem.</p><p>While the film itself has some problematic moments, from a purely filmmaking perspective, the excellent structuring of the opening sequence of "Raiders of the Lost Ark" makes it an unforgettable introduction to Indiana Jones. And at the end of it, the audience feels like they know the character and the world that he inhabits.</p>

However, the growth rate of 27% was <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/alibaba-stock-price-singles-day-historical-ecommerce-china-eco-cools-down-2018-11-1027717653">the lowest in the event's 10-year history. </a></p><p>Over the last decade, Singles Day has become a symbol of Alibaba's success and the company's massive customer base. Alibaba turned the day of deals into a festival, with a gala that included a performance by Mariah Carey and an <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/alibabas-singles-day-2018-photos-2018-11">e-commerce themed acrobatics act from Cirque du Soleil.</a> Hundreds of journalists from around the world attend the event, watching the GMV figure skyrocket and hoping to get a glimpse of Alibaba founder Jack Ma. </p><p>However, while Singles Day helps drum up excitement for Alibaba, the emphasis on growing the GMV can also create problems.  </p><p>Concerns about declining margins and the Chinese economy have contributed to Alibaba's stock <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/alibaba-stock-price-singles-day-historical-ecommerce-china-eco-cools-down-2018-11-1027717653">declining 22% so far this year.</a> As the company's showiest display of power, a subpar Singles Day would mean major issues for Alibaba. </p><p>"The whole world is looking at it - which puts a lot of pressure" on Alibaba, said David Zipser, a McKinsey &amp; Company senior partner who leads its consumer and retail practice in Greater China.</p><p>Business Insider asked Alibaba executives over the weekend if Singles' Day growth was sustainable. The company has entered markets including <a href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=9&amp;ved=2ahUKEwijwOvp9NDeAhVM6bwKHa6GCH8QFjAIegQIABAB&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ft.com%2Fcontent%2Fc3f9f496-1b61-11e8-aaca-4574d7dabfb6&amp;usg=AOvVaw2BLAxnTRBURqRg5Sv0_DMb">food delivery,</a> <a href="https://www.techinasia.com/talk/alibaba-shaping-chinese-entertainment">entertainment</a>, and grocery, with its chain Hema which is slated to hit 100 locations by the end of this year. </p><p>Many of these new businesses are tied to Alibaba's plan to digitize traditionally offline markets, which the company calls "New Retail." Currently, roughly 20% of Chinese retail sales take place online. That means there's another 80% of sales that Alibaba isn't really benefitting from - yet. </p><p>"It's really about digitizing the entire offline store environment," cofounder and executive vice chairman Joe Tsai told Business Insider. "One of the biggest challenges with the traditional store environment is when someone walks into the store, they have no idea who the customer is - whether they picked up something or looked at another item."</p><p>With the rise of mobile, however, Alibaba can track shoppers basically at all times. Customers' reliance on their cell phones, as well as other technology, allows Alibaba to enter old-school shopping spaces and partner with more traditional retailers. </p><p>Tapping into the 80% of offline retail could be a significant Singles Day boost, depending on how Alibaba decides to measure New Retail sales. This year, offline sales - such as purchases at Hema - didn't count towards Singles' Day figures, despite the grocery chain offering 11/11 sales. Next year, president Michael Evans says Alibaba plans to make offline Singles Day figures more "tangible."</p><p>"Consumers don't just stay home, browsing their mobile. In 2018, Singapore-based shopping site Lazada - which Alibaba owns the majority of - hosted its own 11/11 sales for the first time, <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2018/11/12/alibaba-backed-lazada-southeast-asias-e-commerce-growth-accelerating.html">resulting in a tripling of shopper traffic. </a></p><p>"Everywhere I go, which is pretty much everywhere in the world, there are not very many people who do not know about 11/11," Evans told Business Insider.</p><p>"Many people ask the question - how can we participate next year? People are very interested, I think partly because they've heard of Black Friday and Cyber Monday and they think that's quite big."</p><p>He continued: "They've heard of Amazon Prime Day. But, we sold as much in five minutes as Amazon sold in an entire Prime Day."</p><p>Tung says that next year is likely to be a "more global" experience. That could perhaps mean a different home base for 11/11 - maybe even one that isn't in China. </p><h2>The old reliable: China's growing middle class </h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Alibaba</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>When all else fails, executives return to one group over and over again - China's growing middle class. Even if New Retail stumbles or international markets face speed bumps, executives say the growth of China' middle class will remain a constant driver. </p><p>"The exciting thing about the Chinese economy is that there is a core group of middle-class consumers, about 300 million," Tsai said. "In 10 or 15 years, that is going to 600 million consumers. That is twice the size of the US population." </p><p>This middle class is curious and also hungry for new brands, Tsai says, especially imported Western brands. That hunger is key to making Singles Day work. </p><p>If the Chinese middle class maintains its growth, it would take a significant blunder for Singles Day sales to actually plummet. But when it comes to Singles Day figures skyrocketing, however, Alibaba seems to be looking somewhere new.</p><p>International expansion can help keep things fresh. Alibaba's straining to continue its era of record-breaking Singles' Day sales -&#160;here's how executives plan to keep growing

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>NASA's Juno spacecraft, which is roughly the size of a basketball court, is currently zooming around Jupiter some 600 million miles away from Earth.</p><p>And it's taking some truly amazing photos.</p><p>A handful of pictures released by NASA show the first-ever views of Jupiter's poles, plus wild new infrared images and audio of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/juno-jupiter-aurora-sounds-2016-9">its auroras</a>. The Juno mission's leader even said the imagery "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/juno-jupiter-north-pole-aurora-images-2016-9">looks like nothing we have seen or imagined before</a>."</p><p><strong>But there are many, many other Juno images we're not readily seeing</strong> - so mathematician Gerald Eichstädt is continuously assembling them into a "marble movie" of Jupiter, as we learned from <a href="http://www.planetary.org/blogs/emily-lakdawalla/2016/09221047-juno-and-marble-movie-update.html">Emily Lakdawalla at her Planetary Society blog</a>.</p><p>The animated video below shows the view from Juno's only visible-light camera, called JunoCam. You can even imagine you're riding Juno while watching it.</p><p>The "marble" of Jupiter is at the center and its four biggest, Galilean moons - <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-europa-hubble-images-announcement-2016-9">Europa</a>, Ganymede, Io, and Callisto - are orbiting around it as brightened dots:</p><p><div></div></p><p>The clip looks sped-up because JunoCam only takes photos once every 15 to 30 minutes, Lakdawalla writes in the description for the YouTube video.</p><p>But wait for the frightening moment about <a href="https://youtu.be/JqleyiMCiME?t=1m50s">1 minute and 50 seconds</a> into the clip, when it looks like Juno is going to slam into the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/size-of-jupiter-juno-mission-2016-8">largest planet in the solar system</a>.</p><p>What you're seeing is the pinnacle of a highly elliptical and scary-looking orbit - and the only reason Juno is able to get such unprecedented views of the world:</p><p><div><div style="position:relative;padding-bottom:57%"></div></div></p><p>At the tightest part of the orbital loop, <strong>Jupiter's gravity accelerates Juno to a blistering 130,000 mph</strong>, or about 75 times faster than a bullet shot out of a gun.</p><p>The main reason Juno pulls off these acrobatics is so that it does not die.</p><p>Jupiter's powerful magnetic field whips up a sickening amount of harmful radiation that can fry electronics, and in particular solar panels. So it's best to bolt around&#xa0;the planet and then get out of there as fast as possible.</p><p>NASA could have powered Juno with a rare radioactive material called plutonium-238, allowing the robot to orbit more closely, but the space agency <a href="https://www.wired.com/2013/09/plutonium-238-problem/">is running very, very low on the stuff</a>. So instead, it opted for solar energy (and crazy orbits).</p><p>Lakdawalla says Eichstädt wrote an algorithm to continuously build out the video using <a href="http://planetary.s3.amazonaws.com/data/juno/junocam_marble.html">images she's ripping</a> from <a href="https://www.missionjuno.swri.edu/junocam/processing?id=40">a buried page</a> of the Juno mission's website.</p><p>Eichstädt is also using the Juno data to make cool animations like the one below. Each frame shows how far <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-many-moons-does-jupiter-have-2016-7">a Galilean moon</a> moves over 21 hours (the trail of dots), and there are 46 frames, giving a total of about 6 weeks of time compressed into a few seconds.</p><p>Io orbits the closest, followed by Europa, then Ganymede, and the farthest (about 1.2 million miles away) is Callisto:</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div><p>So far the latest "marble movie" covers about 1.5 orbits, since Juno is into its second of 36 flybys scientists have planned.</p><p>"This is a work in progress; eventually the animation should cover through October 18," Lakdawalla wrote - when Juno will make another death-defying flyby of Jupiter.</p><p>Once the mission ends, however, Juno won't live on as a relic of humanity's exploration. <p>At the recently concluded <a href="http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/intel-developer-forum-idf/san-francisco/2014/idf-2014-san-francisco.html" target="_blank">Intel Developer Forum (IDF)</a>in San Francisco,you never knew what you'd come across - but you could always be certain it was worth a second look.</p>
<p>One minute you'd be watching yoga acrobatics performed in front of the wearable technology zone, and the next, Google co-founder <a href="https://twitter.com/intel/status/509816590087753729" target="_blank">Sergey Brin was jumping out of the crowd</a> to bust a move.</p>
<p>This year's event had no shortage of surprises. Intelligent and Internet-connected creations -created by <a href="http://iq.intel.com/are-you-an-amateur-or-professional-maker/" target="_blank">amateur and professional makers</a> as well as Intel Labs researchers - were on full display.</p>
<p>Head-turners included a creepy robotic spider, a mood-sensing shirt, and a pinball-like game powered by tiny sensors, servos, and LEGOs. Each handmade project was built using <a href="http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/do-it-yourself/edison.html?cid=sem132p31007g-t&amp;gclid=CN2QsofZ2sACFQxp7AodiEwAzQ" target="_blank">Intel Edison</a> and <a href="http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/do-it-yourself/galileo-maker-quark-board.html" target="_blank">Galileo technology</a>, which provide makers with substantial computing performance and software that makes it easy to turn ideas into reality.</p>
<p>"More things are being connected to the Internet not just because of personal devices [laptops, tablets and smartphone], industrial machines and things like smart-cities technologies," said Ed Ross,director of inventor platforms for Intel's New Devices Group. "Crowdfunding, 3D printing and the open source movement are driving more people to make their own things that connect to and run on the Internet."</p>
<p>Using software tools that come with Galileo and Edison, makers can design new things that connect to the Internet, use cloud services to analyze and store data, and even connect to other wireless-equipped devices.</p>
<h3><strong>Spiderbot</strong></h3>
<p class="center"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><a href="http://www.intelfreepress.com/news/modern-day-da-vinci-designs-smart-spider/132" target="_blank"></a><p class="source"><span>Intel</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p>
<p><a href="https://twitter.com/blegas78/status/396109327934574592" target="_blank">Matt Bunting </a>first developed the smart hexapodas an undergraduate at the University of Arizona, 3D printing the legs at one of the school's lab.Now a PhD student, Bunting recently transformed his crawling creation into a <strong>Spiderbot</strong> using Intel Edison technology, which helped lessen the load on the robotic structure and add new capabilities. Bunting brought two Spiderbots to IDF, one connected to his laptop with wires and another that operates wirelessly.His goal now is to see how it gets around on different types of terrain, but it could make for an even better trick at <a href="https://twitter.com/blegas78/status/396109327934574592" target="_blank">Halloween</a>.</p>
<h3><strong>Spinball Machine</strong></h3>
<p class="center"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div></p>
<p>One team of Intel developers rummaged through some old storage items and found a blender, four fans, and some Ping-Pong balls to create the <strong>Spinball Machine</strong>. Using a second-generation Intel Galileo development board, a team (led by Intel Labs) connected buttons and switches linked to motors that control the game's flippers. Fans on each corner blow the Ping-Pong ball around after a player scores.</p>
<p>This one-on-one pinball for makers has been demonstrated before at places such as Lighthouse Community Charter in Oakland and at after-school programs like TechGYRLs. Researchers say it's been a great way to get young students interested in coding and creating.</p>
<h3><strong>Autonomous Rover</strong></h3>
<p class="center"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div></p>
<p>This <strong>autonomous rover</strong> can sense obstructions and redirect itself without human intervention. Rick Waldron made the rover with a Galileo Gen 2 development board, three sensors, steering equipment, wheel motors, a battery, a GPS, and Lego parts. With a wave of someone's hand, the two feeler-like wires at the front of the rover turns its front wheels right or left and the back wheels into reverse.</p>
<h3><strong>Octoblu</strong></h3>
<p class="center"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div></p>
<p>The <a href="http://www.octoblu.com/" target="_blank">Octoblu</a> team scoured Twitter for tweets with the IDF hashtag (<a href="https://twitter.com/search?q=%23IDF14&amp;src=typd" target="_blank">#IDF14</a>) and ran them through a sentiment-detection algorithm that triggered different-colored lights. Red signified negative tweets, green positive, and blue neutral. The team is working to get machines and software talking in an effort to improve home-automation systems like thermostats and lights.</p>
<h3><strong>Light-up Undershirt</strong></h3>
<p class="center"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div></p>
<p>Inspired by China's harsh winters and increasingly isolated aging population, developers at Intel Labs China created a <strong>light-up undershirt</strong> that uses Edison to collect ECG data. The data it collects can be analyzed by a tablet, which displays the wearer's emotions. This novel way of visualizing someone's mood led the team to create a decorative necktie that lights up in different patterns depending on the heart rate and mood of the person wearing the undershirt.</p>
<h3><strong>Running Backpack</strong></h3>
<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table center"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div></p>
<p>Michael Tsvetkov developed a voice-controlled <strong>running backpack</strong> that displays words and recognizable icons. When Tsvetkov says, "Turning left," an arrow pointing left appears in lights along with a person walking in that direction. Tsvetkov says he hopes the device, made with an Edison development board, will help marathon runners. With so many backpacks in the world, he believes it could be used in a variety of fun and useful ways.</p>
<h3><strong>3D Robotics</strong></h3>
<p class="center"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div></p>
<p>This drone from <a href="http://3drobotics.com/" target="_blank">3D Robotics</a> adjusts its position to always keep a person in the camera's frame. Some drone videographers rely on GPS, but that's not precise enough to follow someone in motion, said Arthur Benemann, who manned the company's booth at IDF. Benemann says the 3D Robotics drone "tracks the biggest red blob." For now, that means users need to wear a red shirt or hat.</p>
<h3><strong>Autonomous Water-Sensing Rover</strong></h3>
<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table center"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div></p>
<p>Oregon State University Student Tuan Truong, along with some other summer interns at Intel, built an <strong>autonomous water-sensing rover</strong> that helps farmers determine how often they need to water crops. A sensor on the rover takes soil samples to determine moisture level, while an infrared webcam captures information about plant health and age. Truong said his goal is to make the rover fully solar powered.</p>
<h3><strong>Construction Helmet</strong></h3>
<p class="center"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div></p>
<p>After a new building went up near Intel's office in Guadalajara, Mexico, 12 Intel employees there decided to spend their spare time developing a better <strong>construction helmet</strong>. The result, says team member Roberto Burgos, is a helmet that uses Edison and an expansion board to detect a variety of anomalies. In the case of an impact, a foreman can then determine whether a worker needs medical attention. The helmet also has sensors that can detect gas leaks. Canaries everywhere are rejoicing.</p>
