Before Musk bought Twitter in 2022, the social media site would release a report twice a year detailing statistics on data requests, copyright notices, user reports of violations, and suspensions. The "transparency reports" were typically 50 pages long or more. Three years after Musk took control of the company and rebranded it X, it has finally released a new transparency report. And the results are surprising. Under Musk's leadership, X has suspended over four times as many accounts in the first half of 2024 — 5.3 million — as Twitter ever did during similar periods. According to its transparency reports at the time, Twitter suspended almost 873,000 accounts in the last half of 2019. That number grew to about 1.3 million <keyword id="23342823" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="account-suspensions" source="keywords">account suspensions</keyword> in the latter half of 2021. The recent suspensions were related to child safety, abuse or harassment, and misleading identities, according to X. A spokesperson for X did not immediately respond to questions regarding the surge in suspended accounts. While he has reinstated some prominent accounts previously suspended by Twitter, like former President Donald Trump's and Infowars' <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/alex-jones-infowars-free-speech-systems-auction-sandy-hook-bankruptcy-2024-9">Alex Jones</a>, Musk has newly suspended others, like the account of a student who <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/man-who-tracks-elon-musk-private-jet-permanently-banned-twitter-2022-12">tracked his private jet flights</a>. On Thursday, X also suspended journalist Ken Klippenstein's account after he published a 271-page dossier on JD Vance, Trump's running mate in the 2024 election. An X spokesperson told CNN that Klippenstein's suspension was triggered because it included the candidate's home address and part of his Social Security number. Musk <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-donald-trump-feud-relationship-timeline-2022-7">endorsed Trump</a> and has been rumored to be in the running for a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-trump-cabinet-election-x-2024-9">cabinet position</a> should Trump ultimately win. Though he has branded himself a free-speech absolutist, Musk has repeatedly capitulated to government demands to moderate the platform more heavily. After months of refusing to comply with <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-x-brazil-free-speech-battle-over-2024-9">a Supreme Court order in Brazil</a> to remove accounts it deemed dangerous to its democracy, for instance, X finally acquiesced last week after hefty fines and a nationwide ban. Musk has also agreed to government requests for account takedowns in Turkey and India. Musk axed much of Twitter's staff after his purchase, including the trust and safety employees who <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/x-social-media-misinformation-swamping-fake-news-trust-safety-2023-10">dealt with misinformation</a> and other content moderation issues on the platform. Govt warns about fake SMS asking users to update their PAN – what it is and how to stay safe

The company is fully remote, with 230 employees based in the US, Europe, and Australia. Jasper provides content strategy, integrated marketing campaigns, and public relations to companies including Prudential, Ulta Beauty, Morningstar, and iHeartMedia.<h2 id="15303c4e-ff18-41d1-b714-727cc90ea9f0">Situation analysis: What problem was the company trying to solve?</h2>Jasper has focused on helping clients automate their copywriting using their own brand voice for materials such as blogs, sales <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/goblin-tools-artificial-intelligence-review-ai-for-emails-2023-12">emails</a>, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/strategies-to-manage-grow-small-business-social-media-accounts-2021-3">social-media posts</a>. Loreal Lynch, Jasper's chief marketing officer, said the company also offered a self-service AI writing assistant.But as free generative-AI tools like ChatGPT became widely available, Jasper's services evolved. The company started by building products with AI to help clients improve their overall marketing programs. This program could target companies with tailored <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-use-ai-for-content-creation-digital-marketing">content</a> in the hope of turning them into clients. The company's design and web teams were also involved in its development.<h2 id="6a422697-1d8b-4827-b9da-21e5f360090a">AI in action</h2>Lynch said Jasper used its AI-driven workflow to perform several functions in order to help attract business.First, the program scraped the websites of enterprise companies that Jasper hoped to sign up as clients and gathered information such as company details, brand voice, and email addresses. The email included a link to the sample landing page and a message advertising Jasper's services. The goal was to showcase Jasper's tools to prospective clients.Jasper's AI tool followed up with two additional emails per company.With AI, Jasper generated emails and sample web content in a fraction of the time it would take traditional marketing teams. Lynch said the campaign also helped expand the company's sales efforts.<h2 id="3e5670ff-c4d4-49f9-b8f9-a4cf1710383c">Did it work, and how did leaders know?</h2>Newton told BI that Jasper acquired 12 customers using the AI ABM workflow.Additionally, Jasper said that based on the hours invested in developing the workflow compared with the revenue generated, the initial campaign achieved a return on investment of 20 times for the company. Newton also said its <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-email-inbox-revolution-chatgpt-google-openai-shortwave-productivity-tools-2023-3">AI-generated emails</a> performed significantly better than traditional email marketing, achieving 2.9 times the number of opens, 11 times the number of clicks, and four times the number of responses."It's a level of impact that's kind of unreal," Newton said. It recently launched an AI image suite to help customers <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-platform-runway-lets-users-transform-images-videos-with-words-2023-5">edit images at scale</a>, such as by changing colors or adding graphics for holiday marketing campaigns, Lynch said.The company is also working on using AI to automate and scale content tailored around keywords to help customers improve their search-engine rankings.

One marketing firm is merging AI and account-based marketing to attract new businesses. It's already achieved a 20x ROI.

After a brief stint owned by News Corp, it's been operating independently since 2009. Leonard, CEO since 2017, spoke to Business Insider about Photobucket's latest plans, which include new features, such as a private sharing plan called Group Buckets, which allows groups like a wedding party, kids' soccer team, or a family to post and share photos securely among themselves.Photobucket, now privately owned and based in Denver, didn't share details about its revenue or other financials. (<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://x.com/textfiles/status/1204428338913325056">Webshots</a> shut down in 2012. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/flickr-new-owner-smugmug-remain-independent-2018-4">Flickr moved to a paid subscription</a> model in 2019 and only kept the first 1,000 images on non-paying users' accounts.)Those old images that Photobucket has been storing for all these years — things people uploaded in 2005 and forgot about — are still there. And now they may provide a windfall for Photobucket, which can make licensing deals with AI companies to train their models on those images and videos. Leonard didn't share details on how much revenue the AI training deals might bring.If those deals are inked, Photobucket would follow in the footsteps of other media and content companies that see <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-publishers-deal-explainer-peter-kafka-2024-6">AI licensing deals as a good financial opportunity</a>.<div type="image" title="Ted Leonard CEO of photobucket in a blue shirt sitting down" height="1462" width="1949" msid="114265014" hostid="261" sizebytes="223414"></div><h2 id="c4bba153-d2b7-4688-b65c-5b1a7dc6d4ec">Photobucket isn't the only company using your photos for AI training</h2>If the idea of stuff you posted to the internet long ago now being used for AI training gives you the ick, well, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-killing-web-grand-bargain-2023-8">I have some bad news for you</a>.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.theverge.com/2024/9/12/24242789/meta-training-ai-models-facebook-instagram-photo-post-data">Meta recently said</a> that it used public Facebook photos and posts to train its own AI models. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/flickr-photos-kids-train-ai-facial-recognition-database-megaface-report-2019-10">Flickr photos were already used for facial recognition</a> training starting in 2014 when Yahoo owned it. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/06/technology/tech-giants-harvest-data-artificial-intelligence.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&amp;sgrp=c-cb">OpenAI has reportedly used YouTube content</a> for training.Oodles of other websites and content have been used for AI training as part of the open-source dataset called the "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://commoncrawl.org/">Common Crawl.</a>" This could have already included Photobucket images hosted on other sites.Leonard said Photobucket is in talks with several companies to license the images. Rather than a one-shot deal where, say, OpenAI gets images to use forever, the potential deals are generally for a few years and for specific content."A company will come to us and say, 'We need content of landscapes with people in a distance, and we're looking for beach and mountains,'" Leonard explained. "So we say, 'OK, great. Based on that request, we have 150,000 images that we can license you.'"Photobucket estimates about half of its 13 billion images are public and eligible for AI licensing.<h2 id="b1ca6dbf-d446-4b92-9ca0-9dc53af83ed5">Notifying users about the new Terms of Service</h2>Leonard said Photobucket sent an email in July to its customers alerting them to an update to its <a target="_blank" href="https://photobucket.com/legal/biometric-information-privacy-policy">Terms of Service</a>. The update outlined how public images may be used for AI training, including "scanning and processing of the Public User Uploaded Content, including extracting physical features, e.g. measurements, of your Biometric Information (e.g., face, iris, etc.), for the purpose of artificial intelligence and machine learning training."I have an old Photobucket account from around 2007 that I used for hosting images for an old blog. For the past few years, I've gotten emails with increasingly dire warnings that my account was at risk of being deactivated. (It hasn't been.) At some point years ago, I had already downloaded the images and stored them elsewhere, so I wasn't too concerned. (I do continue to pay $10 a month for my old personal photos on <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/this-quote-perfectly-sums-up-how-yahoo-is-killing-everything-it-buys-2014-8">Flickr</a>.)Presumably, there are plenty of people like me with an old Photobucket account, largely forgotten — maybe abandoned because we moved the photos somewhere else or simply didn't care. And then there's another group of people who aren't even getting these emails: Maybe they signed up with a student email that they can't access anymore, or maybe they long ago forgot their username and password combination.Leonard said Photobucket has been attempting to reach customers through email, on-site alerts, and other methods (including alerting users in the press, like in this story).I did receive the email from Photobucket alerting me about the new policy, but like most other emails about updated Terms of Service, I simply didn't bother opening it."There's kind of a two-way street where if you put a whole bunch of personal memories on the site, maybe you should do your best to continue to update the email address and everything like that," Leonard said.

That old Photobucket account you haven't touched in years could soon be licensed to train AI

Growing up, he said most of Port-au-Prince could be classified as "working poor," including his grandmother who would wake up at 4 a.m. working side hustles.He noted how everyone in his neighborhood shared food, as his grandmother would prepare a large pot of food and serve those in need. He recalled having no AC or clean running water growing up and few books in his school library."Those little things taught me how to value not just making money but how to use it to provide a roof over my head and food in the pantry," Delva-Gonzalez said.When he was a teenager, he moved to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/billionaire-bunker-miami-bezos-tom-brady-ivanka-trump-security-2024-9">Miami</a> with his mother into a studio apartment. His mother never made more than $30,000 a year, he said."We were poor. I don't know why people don't like to say it, but it's just what it was," Delva-Gonzalez said. "We got reduced breakfasts and lunches at school. The first time I had tennis shoes when when I bought them for myself when I was 16 because I had to work."He decided to attend college, taking out $110,000 in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/professor-student-loan-debt-suddenly-forgiven-2024-8">student loans</a> between his undergraduate and graduate programs in business and accounting at Florida State University. He also spent seven years in the Marine Corps. Being in debt stressed him out immensely, though he struggled to secure a high-paying job, especially since it took him a few years to become acclimated to American culture.He suspected his racial and socioeconomic background hindered him in the job search, and he was once told in an interview for a finance role he couldn't work there because he didn't have any investments. His first post-college job as a financial assistant paid him $27,000 before taxes, half of which went toward student loans."I started to think about my grandmother, how she was able to make ends meet and feed so many people, and I asked, how was she able to do that?" Delva-Gonzalez said. "I started to incorporate those types of ideas into my lifestyle, such as meal prep, reducing consumption of excess things, and mining the money that I had by being intentional."<h2 id="8cc11717-39f5-41fb-9370-71ec82c4b336">Budgeting and investing</h2>In 2012, Delva-Gonzalez, an auditor, began <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/banking/how-to-budget">budgeting</a>, and the amount he spent each month surprised him. Between him and his three roommates, they spent $2,400 a month on food, which he said was an "insane amount."Delva-Gonzalez said he also didn't have a plan for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/regret-paying-off-student-debt-instead-earning-passive-income-2024-7">paying off his student loans</a> while investing in his retirement, so he jumped into the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program and put more in his <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/investing/what-is-401k">401(k)</a>, 403(b), and 457(b) plans. He did this to lower his adjusted gross income, which would lower his tax liability and, thus, his student loan payments."The more that you can invest on the front end in tax-beneficial accounts or systems, it will basically have an outsize return for you in the back end," he said.He used some of this excess money to tackle his <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/feared-credit-card-debt-valuable-tool-used-right-2024-9">credit card debt</a>, and he jumped to auditor positions that paid increasingly more. His debt-to-income ratio fell rapidly.After a few years of heavy savings and investments, he had enough to purchase a home for $132,000 in 2016, paying about $1,000 each month for his mortgage.His upbringing in Haiti "gave me an advantage over a lot of my peers because I find that resourcefulness is probably one of those things that you need to have, especially when everybody thinks that things are falling apart," Delva-Gonzalez said.That year, he met his now-wife Doreen, and they merged their accounts. Delva-Gonzalez still had debts to pay down, though. By 2017, the two of them could pay down debt to the point of having a net worth of zero. They employed various budgeting apps to keep expenditures low and pinpoint the areas where they overspent. Both of them maxed out their 401(k)s and IRAs, and they put thousands in their health savings accounts.<h2 id="fc389af8-3237-492f-bf10-36ab38beb103">Becoming millionaires</h2><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fire-movement-financial-independence-retire-early-millennial-goals-saving-wealth-2024-5">Careful money decisions</a>, along with side hustles in financial coaching, allowed them to grow their combined net worth to over $250,000 by the start of 2020 despite neither working high-paying jobs (his wife works as a community manager). Their assets included a rental property they bought next to his alma mater, which ensures constant revenue — and is where his cousin may live while attending school. Their net worth grew to over $450,000 in January 2021, over $650,000 in January 2022, over $800,000 in January 2023, and $1.53 million in August 2024, according to his blog <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://theneighborhoodfinanceguy.com/net-worth-since-2020/">The Neighborhood Finance Guy</a>."I think people overthink the process; they think that there's a secret sauce that somebody hasn't told them about or that they have to be masterminds," Delva-Gonzalez said.To cross the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/insider-today-millionaire-status-symbol-football-season-2024-9">millionaire</a> threshold, Delva-Gonzalez said they closely followed the "financial order of operations," such as the rule that people should not have more than <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/half-american-renters-ignore-key-financial-rule-on-housing-spending-2024-9">30% of their take-home pay</a> going toward their total housing costs. While this isn't possible for many Americans living paycheck to paycheck, Delva-Gonzalez said it's critical to not keep up with the Joneses and avoid the larger house until expenses are underneath 25% of gross income.He avoided frequent higher-cost purchases — such as expensive brunches — without jeopardizing his social life. Still, he estimates in the last five years, he and his wife have dropped over $40,000 on Amazon purchases, which he called "little daggers poking into my ship."He said after leaving his job once he's more financially stable, his goal is to buy back the time he spent working and pursue travel and volunteer opportunities, such as helping Black Americans through the childcare process or helping young entrepreneurs create and grow their businesses."You're really doubling down on the actual freedom to truly be who you want, the freedom of not being beholden to dressing a certain way," Delva-Gonzalez said. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Rebecca Cox is working side jobs this summer after her first year as a full-time teacher.</li><li>She's working at a restaurant and as a nanny, and did a short gig with an organizing business.</li></ul>Rebecca Cox, 27, hoped to take a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/teachers-feel-guilty-for-not-working-summer-2024-7">summer break</a> following her first year as a full-time fifth-grade <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/school-classroom-spending-teacher-why-spend-own-money-2023-10">teacher</a> in Kentucky."It just drained me and wiped me out because I was learning so much and figuring things out as I went," Cox told Business Insider.Instead of taking a vacation, Cox has been working different gigs this summer, attending trainings, and decorating her classroom. She spends some evenings as a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/waitress-makes-5500-month-picking-up-shifts-fronthouz-2024-4">restaurant hostess</a>, making $18 an hour. Cox also earns money as a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nanny-nantucket-nashville-toddler-wealthy-family-private-jet-2022-11">nanny</a> for a family. She cares for their dogs and children as needed, including during the school year.She also did a short stint earlier this month at a business owned by a friend of the family whose kids she takes care of with a pay of $30 an hour, unpacking and organizing homes for people. While that job was short-term, she said the other two are more consistent for this summer."I feel like I haven't stopped even since school's been out," she said. "Yes, it's summer break, but I have not sat down. I keep working."Other young teachers like Cox take on summer jobs. A <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2019/07/01/about-one-in-six-u-s-teachers-work-second-jobs-and-not-just-in-the-summer/">Pew Research Center analysis</a> of federal education data found that as of 2015, "teachers younger than 30 are more likely to hold summer jobs than their older colleagues," and public school teachers with a year or less of experience were most likely to have a non-school second job.A recent survey of 366 teachers from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.weareteachers.com/what-do-teachers-do-in-the-summer/">We Are Teachers</a> found around half said they would be working a second job in the summer. The survey found many would be doing jobs related to education; 37% said they would be teaching summer school and a quarter said tutoring.Plus, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/teacher-salary-pay-penalty-worse-wage-gap-report-2023-10">teachers are generally underpaid</a>, and that could be pushing some educators to take on extra work when they should be resting up for the next school year. A <a target="_blank" href="https://www.census.gov/library/stories/2022/07/teachers-among-most-educated-yet-pay-lags.html">Census Bureau analysis</a> published in 2022 stated, "Although teachers are among the nation's most educated workers, they earn far less on average than most other highly educated workers and their earnings have declined since 2010."Cox is putting the money from her summer jobs toward savings and classroom items. The summer gigs are also helpful for Cox as a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/focused-our-spending-afford-our-dream-wedding-2024-6">soon-to-be bride</a>. "Once I figured out that I was getting married and I started to see how much these things cost, I was like, there's no way that I'm even going to be able to even, one, save money in general regularly, but now on top of that, pay for some of the expenses for the things we need."Cox said she wished teachers didn't have to take on summer gigs."Even if we're not working per se, a lot of us are spending our time getting new things created for the new kids that are coming in or organizing things or getting ready with curriculum or going to professional development over summer on our own terms," Cox said.She still gets paid over the summer as a teacher, receiving around $1,300 every two weeks after deductions and taxes.Cox said it was a good thing she started the organizing business job when she did because she suddenly needed car repairs. "Now I can pay for it because if I didn't have extra money from working over the summer, I don't know that I would be able to pay to get it fixed," she said.The money will also be helpful for her classroom. She said she does receive several hundred dollars from her district to use for supplies, but it can feel like nothing when taking into account how many children she teaches. "I want them to have all the resources that they need. So on top of my own expenses, I do take on some expenses from my classroom as well," she said.Teachers can end up spending thousands of dollars on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/teacher-spent-2000-dollars-own-money-classroom-supplies-2022-8">classroom supplies</a> during their teaching career. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/school-classroom-spending-elementary-teacher-books-math-class-items-2023-11">One teacher</a> who wanted her room "to feel homey" previously noted to BI she would spend a lot of money on books. Teachers may also get donations to help fill their classrooms with supplies."We don't ask other professions to try to do their job without the materials they need," another <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/school-classroom-spending-teacher-why-spend-own-money-2023-10">teacher</a> previously told BI. "I feel like a lot of teachers are expected to do their job without materials that they have or that they need."Cox finds the nanny job her favorite among the summer gigs. "Yes, it's work, but it also is a little more enjoyable because I get to take them to do fun things — if they just need to go out to do stuff or if they want to go to the movies," she said.Cox loves being a teacher and said she's not in it for the money, but does find the relatively low pay a challenge. "It was kind of just the realization of is this really what I'm going to be making every two weeks because honestly, I wouldn't be able to afford to live on my own. My fiancé's actually a teacher as well, so if I was by myself, I would not be able to pay all my bills," she said."I feel like to even make a livable, reasonable salary as a teacher, I'm going to have to get my master's," she said. "So, I plan on doing that next year.
