The rate-setting panel may prefer to stick to the 'withdrawal of accommodation' stance of the <keyword id="20104157" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="monetary-policy" source="keywords">monetary policy</keyword>, HSBC said in the report on the eve of the <keyword id="19899808" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="RBI" source="keywords">RBI</keyword> <keyword id="19918491" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="MPC" source="keywords">MPC</keyword>'s decision. "While it's a close call, we also think the policy stance will remain unchanged, even as the RBI sounds more confident than before about getting to its 4% <keyword id="20661141" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="inflation-target" source="keywords">inflation target</keyword>," it said, listing out the aspects it will watch out for in the document or the resolution. These include any softness in tone around increased confidence of getting to 4% inflation durably, or a change in growth or inflation forecasts, and, further commentary around the use of OMO (open market operations) sales to take out excess liquidity. In the background of another member dissenting at the last policy review, the brokerage said the number of MPC members calling for a rate cut or change in stance will also be watched keenly. Apart from this, it said any more colour on the plans to change regulatory requirements on the <keyword id="20479869" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="liquidity-coverage-ratio" source="keywords">liquidity coverage ratio</keyword>, which is reported to have a bearing on banks' profitability, will also be watched, it said. On the stance questions, there are several points in support of softening from the current "hawkish" posturing, the brokerage said, adding that there are an equal number of aspects against such a move as well. Factors such as global turmoil, improving rains, soft core inflation, weaker credit growth and fiscal consolidation support a softening of the stance, while on the other side, there are competing ones like long wait for a durable fall in food inflation, loose financial conditions, OMO sales and growth being strong on the other side, it said.

RBI to hold rates, may sound more confident of reaching inflation target, says report

Mumbai, Dec 5 () The Indian rupee rose sharply in the last hour of trade to settle 24 paise higher at 71.29 to the US dollar on Thursday after the RBI promised to continue with accommodative stance in its monetary policy.
 The central bank, however, decided to keep key interest rate unchanged in its fifth bi-monthly monetary policy for this ongoing fiscal, a move that widely surprised investors who were expecting at least 25 basis points cut in policy rate.
 The Indian unit traded on a flat note for a better part of the session but briefly fell post RBI monetary policy announcement. It recovered swiftly mainly in the last hour of trade to close at 71.29, up 24 paise over its previous close.
 The rupee's rise was also supported by weaker dollar against key global currencies.
 The dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was down 0.16 per cent at 97.49.
 "Indian rupee gains in line with other Asian peers. Rupee edged higher after Reserve Bank of India left the policy rate at 5.15, the first pause after five consecutive rate cuts, amid rising inflation expectations," HDFC Securities said.
 The 10-year government bond yield was at 6.60 per cent, up over 2 per cent.
 "India's sovereign bonds declined the most in more than two months, the benchmark 10-year bond yield bonds rose 13 basis points to 6.60 per cent, after central bank keeps policy rate unchanged... The MPC also decided to continue with the accommodative stance as long as it is necessary to revive growth," it added.
 On the equity front, the BSE gauge Sensex settled lower by 70.70 points or 0.17 per cent at 40,779.59. The index swung between losses and gains after the central bank kept the rates unchanged.
 The NSE Nifty closed the day with a loss of 24.80 points or 0.21 per cent at 12,018.40.
 Crude oil benchmark, Brent Futures, rose 0.65 per cent to USD 63.41 a barrel.
 The Financial Benchmark India Private Ltd (FBIL) set the reference rate for the rupee/dollar at 71.78 and for rupee/euro at 79.50. The reference rate for rupee/British pound was fixed at 93.2719 and for rupee/100 Japanese yen at 66.11.
 After five consecutive cuts in interest rates this year, the six-member Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), headed by RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das, unanimously voted to hold the key repo rate at 5.15 per cent and reverse repo rate at 4.90 per cent.
 Bankers and economists had widely expected the central bank to cut rates for the sixth time to support a slowing economy, whose growth rate slipped to a six-year low of 4.5 per cent in the September quarter from 7 per cent a year back. Mumbai, Feb 6 () The rupee on Thursday rose by 6 paise to close at 71.19 against the US dollar after the RBI left the policy rates unchanged but maintained its accommodative stance to boost growth. Investor sentiments strengthened after the Reserve Bank of India signalled to continue with accommodative stance, while low crude oil prices, weakening of the US dollar and gains in domestic equity market supported the domestic currency, forex traders said. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the local currency opened on a positive note at 71.22. During the day, it saw a high of 71.11 and a low of 71.30.The Indian currency finally settled at 71.19, higher by 6 paise against its previous close. The domestic unit had settled at 71.25 against the American currency on Wednesday. "RBI kept its repurchase rate unchanged at 5.15 per cent, citing higher inflation. That, however, doesn't mean the end of the rate cut cycle. The stance remains accommodative as RBI pointed out economic activity remains subdued and there is policy space available for future action," said V K Sharma, Head PCG and Capital Markets Strategy, HDFC Securities. Rupee settles 6 paise higher at 71.19 against USD as RBI maintains accommodative stance

Staying bullish on Indian markets, overseas investors have pumped in a net amount of Rs 23,102 crore in February so far driven by positive sentiment around the budget and RBI's decision to maintain an accommodative stance in the latest monetary policy.According to the depositories data, foreign portfolio investors (FPI) invested a net sum of Rs 10,750 crore into equities and Rs 12,352 crore into the debt segment, taking the total net investment to Rs 23,102 crore between February 3-20. FPIs have been net buyers in the Indian markets since September 2019, the data showed. "There are multiple factors like positive sentiments around the budget and RBI's decision to maintain an accommodative stance in the latest monetary policy that have had foreign investors hooked to the Indian markets despite the challenges faced by the domestic economy and slow pace of growth in corporate earnings," said Himanshu Srivastava, senior analyst manager research, <keyword id="2773868" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Morningstar-Investment">Morningstar Investment</keyword> Adviser India. The removal of DDT in the budget and the government's proposal to increase the FPI limit in corporate bonds from 9 per cent to 15 per cent have helped FPIs regaining their confidence back. Additionally, fixed income markets have witnessed positive flows largely on the back of RBI's decision to maintain an accommodative monetary policy stance, Srivastava said. Globally, he said, there has been a risk-off sentiment among foreign investors with the outbreak of coronavirus epidemic. FPIs have been particularly wary of investing in markets, which rely on tourism, as the spread of virus can adversely impact their prospects and economic growth. "From this perspective, Indian equity market is better positioned among such group of countries and hence it has been attracting foreign flows," he added. "Further improvements in Taiwan's manufacturing conditions suggest that the trade-dependent economy will end the year on a strong note. Stronger new orders and output have filtered into higher employment, which will help support household consumption. But there is insufficient evidence that external demand, especially from Mainland China, has fully recovered. Therefore policymakers in Taipei will likely maintain an accommodative stance for the time being."

Rieder added that when a move toward reduced policy accommodation does take place, volatility in risk-free and risky assets may continue as markets adjust to those changes."While markets have always known that this would happen, the growth data, and now employment are accelerating the anticipation of this policy evolution, and thus we've seen many financial assets respond very quickly and at times in a dislocating manner, as so many questions have yet to be answered," Rieder said. Rieder expects more clarification from the Fed no later than the June meeting, and added that markets will be paying close attention to the next FOMC meeting on March 17 for any guidance. If more clarification comes, markets would be "soothed," but "until then, though, expect more volatility, since markets hate uncertainty, as amply displayed over the past week."

Expect 'uncertainty and volatility' in the stock market for weeks until the Fed clarifies its rate stance, says BlackRock bond chief Rieder

In the concluding meeting of the <keyword id="6375120" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="monetary-policy-committee" source="Orion">Monetary Policy Committee</keyword> (<keyword id="6369693" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="mpc" source="Orion">MPC</keyword>) on Wednesday, five out of its six members decided to opt for raising the policy repo rate by 35 basis points to 6.25 per cent, with immediate effect, <keyword id="30067" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="rbi" source="Orion">RBI</keyword> Governor <keyword id="6359111" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="shaktikanta-das" source="Orion">Shaktikanta Das</keyword> announced. Repo rate is the rate at which the <keyword id="6354335" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india" source="Orion">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> lends to the banks. Consequently, RBI Governor said the standing deposit facility (SDF) rate stands adjusted to 6 per cent, and the marginal standing facility (MSF) rate and the bank rate to 6.50 per cent. As regards the stance of monetary policy, the Governor said the MPC took a holistic view of the policy rate and liquidity conditions relative to inflation. Adjusted for inflation, the policy rate still remains accommodative. The MPC also decided by a majority of four out of six members to remain focused on withdrawal of accommodation to ensure that inflation remains within the target going forward, while supporting growth. The Governor elaborated on the MPC's rationale behind these decisions on the policy rate and the stance. Growth prospects across the world are dampening, he said, adding that financial markets remain nervous and are characterised by high volatility and price swings. Shaktikanta Das said for the Indian economy, the outlook is supported by good progress of rabi-sowing, sustained urban demand, improving rural demand, a pick-up in manufacturing, rebound in services and robust credit expansion. "Consumer price inflation moderated to 6.8 per cent (y-o-y) in October as expected, but it still remains above the upper tolerance band of the target. Core inflation is exhibiting stickiness." On balance, he said the MPC was of the view that further calibrated monetary policy action is warranted to keep inflation expectations anchored, break core inflation persistence and contain second-round effects. These actions will strengthen the medium-term growth prospects of the Indian economy. Accordingly, the MPC decided to increase the rate and to remain focused on the withdrawal of accommodation, while supporting growth. Over the next 12 months, the Governor said inflation is expected to remain higher than the 4 per cent target. "System liquidity remains in surplus with an average daily absorption under the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) of Rs 1.6 lakh crore in November 2022. Since then, it has gone up to Rs 2.6 lakh crore as on 5th December," he added. He said that the overall monetary and liquidity conditions remained accommodative and hence, the MPC decided to remain focused on the withdrawal of accommodation. According to the latest data released by National Statistical Office (NSO), real gross domestic product (GDP) posted a growth of 6.3 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) in Q2:2022-23, driven primarily by private consumption and investment. This is in line with our expectations. The governor also said investment activity will get support from government capex, going ahead. A pick-up in the share of fixed assets in total assets of manufacturing companies was visible in the first half of the year (H1). He said according to surveys, consumer confidence has improved further. Manufacturing and infrastructure sector firms are optimistic about the business outlook. Services sector firms also expect activity to expand. In an interconnected world, the Governor said the country cannot remain entirely decoupled from adverse spillovers from the global slowdown and its negative impact on our net exports and overall economic activity. "The biggest risks to the outlook continue to be the headwinds emanating from protracted geopolitical tensions, global slowdown and tightening of global financial conditions," he added. In his summary, he said GDP growth in India remains resilient and inflation is expected to moderate; but the battle against inflation is not over and added pressure points from high and sticky core inflation and exposure of food inflation to international factors and weather-related events do remain. While being watchful of the impact of our earlier monetary policy actions, the Governor said the central bank will keep "Arjuna's eye" on the evolving inflation dynamics and be ready to act as may be necessary. "Our actions will be nimble and in the best interest of the economy. The aspect of growth will obviously be kept in mind," he said. An accommodative stance means the central bank is prepared to expand the money supply to boost economic growth. The RBI has been on an accommodative stance for the last two years to support the economy during the COVID-19 crisis. Adjusted for inflation, policy rate still remains accommodative, says RBI Governor

Governor of <keyword id="6354335" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> (RBI) <keyword id="6358908" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Raghuram-Rajan">Raghuram Rajan</keyword> maintained status quo and kept the repo rate unchanged at 6.50 per cent. 
 
The Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) was also unchanged at 4 per cent. The reserve repo rate was also held at 6 per cent. 
 The food <keyword id="22195" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Inflation">inflation</keyword> is high due to uptick in prices of fruits and vegetables. The prices of pulses are also rising in India. The RBI reiterated upward risk of CPI inflation of 5 per cent. Rajan took a hawkish stance on inflation. 
 The RBI has taken an accommodative stance during the <keyword id="140897" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Policy-Review">policy review</keyword>.

May Core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy components, came in at 0.74% month-over-month and 3.8% year-over-year, well above the consensus forecast and driven higher by used vehicle prices.The BlackRock chief investment officer of global fixed income said the data is just the latest sign that certain parts of the economy don't have sufficient product inventory to supply the demand at current prices. The <keyword id="6355253" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="federal-reserve">Federal Reserve</keyword> has suggested that some of the price gains are transitory, and therefore it will not be changing its policy stance until there is sustained inflation. Rieder, who is also the head of the BlackRock global allocation investment team, said that framework may need to change. "Ongoing adherence to the newly minted Average Inflation Targeting (AIT) framework in the face of a torrid 2021 <keyword id="46126" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="economic-recovery">economic recovery</keyword> that is visibly supply constrained, risks upending the very stability that the AIT framework claims to seek to achieve," Rieder said. The Fed would be better served in fulfilling its mandate to begin to discuss the tapering of asset purchase and to attempt to avoid the " destabilizing influences that can result from excessive use of extreme policy accommodation," he added. Rider also said the inflation data out today is an "overwhelming" sign that prices are moving too high in some areas as demand grossly outpaces supply. "In our view, the pursuit of inflation merely for inflation's sake poses a very real problem: That problem is that inflation in daily necessities is disproportionately felt by lower-income cohorts," said the CIO.
