Animals, potholes and rash driving cause the most road accidents in Indian metros

<ul><li>The fire broke out in a shoe factory in <keyword id="66" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi">Delhi</keyword>'s Keshavpuram area at 8:30 am on May 26.</li><li>23 fire engines were rushed to the factory to douse the flames.</li><li>At the moment, there are no reports of anyone being trapped in the building.</li><li>This is the second fire accident in Delhi in the last 12 hours, with the first one in the Tughlakabad area gutting 250 slum shanties at 1 am.</li></ul> A massive fire broke out in a shoe factory in Delhi's Keshavpuram area on Tuesday morning, May 26. There have been five incidents of fire in Delhi this month. The fire department has rushed 23 fire engines to the spot to douse the flames. According to a report by IANS, no one has been reported trapped in the building so far. Chief Fire Officer Anuj Garg told IANS that the fire call was received at 8.34 am from the shoe-manufacturing factory situated on the first floor of a building in Keshavpuram in northwest Delhi. Second fire accident in Delhi in the last 12 hours This is the second such fire accident in Delhi in the last 12 hours. Earlier at 1 am on May 26, another fire accident was reported in Delhi's Tughlakabad area. "We received information about a fire at around 1 am at slums in Tughlakabad. All police staff reached here immediately. It is being said that around 1,000-1,200 shanties caught fire," Rajendra Prasad Meena, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), South East, told ANI. This is the fifth instance of fire in Delhi during this month. On May 6, a fire broke out at a scrap godown in the Tikri border area around 2:50 am and around 30 <keyword id="154908" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-Fire-Service">Delhi Fire Service</keyword> (DFS) vehicles were rushed to douse the flames. The cause of the fire was not known yet, but the DFS said it might be a short circuit incident that could have triggered the blaze. The second fire incident was reported on May 10 when fire broke out at a cardboard factory in Bawana industrial area and 14 fire tenders were rushed to douse the flames. The third incident was reported at a COVID-designated hospital Cygnus Orthocare Hospital and eight patients were evacuated by the fire fighters. Massive fire breaks out in shoe factory in Delhi's Keshavpuram area

New Delhi, May 6 () About 140 lives lost in over 600 road accidents over the course of the two phases of the nationwide lockdown between March 24 and May 3, according to a report by SaveLIFE Foundation.Of this count, 30 per cent of the victims were migrant workers returning to their homes, said the report by the non-profit organisation, which works towards curbing road accidents in the country.The report said over-speeding on empty roads has emerged as one of the most common reasons for deaths across states. India accounts for one of the highest road crashes fatalities across the globe with annual 5 lakh accidents in which 1.5 lakh people are killed."The country recorded more than 600 road crashes over the course of the two phases of the nationwide lockdown (24th March till 14th April and 14th April to 3rd May)," as per data compiled by SaveLIFE Foundation.During the last five weeks, around 140 lives have been lost due to road crashes across the country, with over 100 deaths recorded in across 9 states alone, it said. "Further analysis of these road crash deaths reveals that around 30 per cent of these victims were migrants travelling back home. Almost 57 per cent of the deaths were of people driving during the lockdown. The most common causal factor across these crashes was speeding," the report said. Tragically, the rest of the road crash deaths were of essential services workers like doctors etc who were travelling either from or to their place of work, it said.The states which recorded maximum accidents are Delhi, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Assam, Kerala, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Punjab and Tamil Nadu. The report said while there has been a dip in the absolute number of road crash fatalities during the lockdown due to suspension of public transport and general mobility, the rate of deaths in road crashes has remained unchanged, highlighting how unsafe Indian roads are even when the majority of the country has been under restrictions. Piyush Tewari, founder and CEO, SaveLIFE Foundation, said, "India suffers the highest number of road crash deaths globally each year. Though there will be a dip in that number this year due to the lockdown, 140 deaths in over 600 crashes goes to show gains achieved will be lost as soon as things go back to normal."He said the third phase of the lockdown is a golden opportunity for states to fix engineering faults in the roads and institute mechanisms for electronic enforcement so that when things become normal, road fatalities can be kept at low. <ul><li>The Supreme Court has ordered the Uttar Pradesh government to extend ₹250,000 as compensation money to <keyword id="490253" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Unnao-rape-case">Unnao rape case</keyword> survivor. </li><li>It has asked <keyword id="76600" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Central-Reserve-Police-Force">Central Reserve Police Force</keyword> (CRPF) Raebareli unit to provide protection. </li><li>The justice bench headed by CJI <keyword id="245445" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ranjan-Gogoi">Ranjan Gogoi</keyword> also directed the transfer of of the five Unnao cases to Delhi.</li></ul>The Supreme Court directed the Uttar Pradesh government to provide ₹250,000 as interim compensation to Unnao rape case survivor. The apex court also directed the state government to ensure security to the girl, and her lawyer. Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Raebareli unit was asked to provide protection. The rape survivor, two of her aunts and her lawyer were injured in a road accident on Sunday. The Central Bureau of Investigation, on Wednesday filed a case against BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar and eight others on murder charges, alleging that the accident was planned, India Today reported. Sengar was accused of rape by the victim, a year back. The King George Medical University hospital said that the condition of the injured rape survivor is critical. Both the survivor and her lawyer are on ventilator. Both the aunts succumbed to injuries. At a hearing on Wednesday, the SC offered the rape survivor’s family to shift her to AIIMS in Delhi for treatment. The bench headed by CJI Ranjan Gogoi also <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/india/story/supreme-court-unnao-case-hearing-live-updates-1575940-2019-08-01">transferred </a>the all the five Unnao cases — rape of the 19-year-old girl, case on her father under Arms Act, a case on the custodial death of the father, murder case against Kuldeep Sengar, and finally the accident — to Delhi. The Supreme Court asked the bench to conclude all the judicial proceedings within 45 days. In a letter she wrote to the Chief Justice of India (CJI), the girl had mentioned the possibility of a threat. India’s apex court directs UP state government to grant ₹25 lakh as interim compensation to Unnao rape survivor

The CBI investigation The Central Bureau of Investigation gave a statement to the Delhi High Court that the charges of rape pressed by the 19-year-old girl against Senghar are correct. The investigating agency had said that they have sufficient evidence to prove Senghar guilty. Senghar is guilty of plotting the rape of the minor along with co-accused Shashi Singh, <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/theres-truth-in-unnao-girls-charges-against-mla-says-cbi/articleshow/70579702.cms">reported</a> Times of India citing CBI. The rape survivor, who was 17 years old at the time of the incident, told the CBI that Singh took her inside Senghar's residence, and gang-raped her. Unnao Case: India’s premier investigating agency finds ex-BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Senghar guilty of rape

A report by Community Against Drunken Driving (CADD), said the percentage of crashes caused by drunk drivers in the national capital was steadily rising since 2010, when it was 62 per cent.
