"Cricketer Rishabh Pant's car met with an accident between Manglaur and Narsan in Haridwar district. There have been five incidents of fire in Delhi this month. The fire department has rushed 23 fire engines to the spot to douse the flames. According to a report by IANS, no one has been reported trapped in the building so far. Chief Fire Officer Anuj Garg told IANS that the fire call was received at 8.34 am from the shoe-manufacturing factory situated on the first floor of a building in Keshavpuram in northwest Delhi. Experts said the flooding was a result of bad urban planning. "Flooding in Indian cities is largely a product of bad urban planning. In Delhi, the Yamuna floodplains have been encroached upon obstructing the natural water flow. Other issues include deforestation, poor drainage system and lack of integrated urban planning," Anjal Prakash, research director, Indian School of Business, Hyderabad, said. Kuldeep Srivastava,the head of regional forecasting center of the IMD, said the axis of monsoon will remain close to the national capital till Thursday. Therefore, more rains are likely. Southwesterly winds from the Arabian Sea and southeasterly winds from the Bay of Bengal are also feeding moisture to the region, he said. The downpour also reduced the rain deficiency in the capital -- from 13 percent on Monday to 11 percent on Wednesday. The Safdarjung Observatory has recorded 147.4 mm rainfall against the normal of 165.2 mm in August so far. Overall, it has recorded 466 mm rainfall, six per cent more than the normal of 441.3 mm since June 1 when the monsoon season starts. "This is a tragic incident. It is very unfortunate. A statutory enquiry has already been ordered. The Hon'ble Prime Minister has been concerned about the death and the injured passengers and I am continuously in touch with the Prime Minister. I am also in touch with the ground situation and today I have come to find out the root cause of the accident. Once it is detected we will try to solve it so that there is no such accident for similar reasons," Vaishnaw said after reaching the accident spot. Nine persons died and another 36 persons were injured in the accident. According to sources in the Railways, the condition of 15 persons is serious. "The injured people have been sent to Jalpaiguri Super Speciality Hospital and North Bengal Medical College," a senior official of North Frontier Railways said. Meanwhile, the rescue operation has been concluded and the tracks have been cleared. "The rescue operation was conducted all through the night. Special teams from the BSF and NDRF went on with the rescue operation. The rakes were cleared off from the tracks at night only and the damaged engine was removed in the morning. There was some problem because of the darkness but we finally managed to do it," the official said. Nine trains were diverted through alternative routes following the accident, which include Guwahati-Howrah Saraighat Express, Kamakhya-Anand Vihar Express, New Delhi-Agartala Tejas Rajdhani Express and Trivandrum-Silchar Express and Kanchanjungha Express. There were a total of 1,200 passengers on board, including 700 who boarded the train from Bikaner and 98 passengers who boarded the train from Patna junction. The railway authorities have announced a compensation of Rs five lakh for the families of the victims and Rs one lakh for the seriously injured and another Rs 25,000 for the injured. According to the railway authorities the reason for the accident is yet to be determined, but there was no problem regarding signal and it is expected that the derailment took place because of some problems on the track. The doctors at <keyword id="136410" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="fortis-hospital" source="Orion">Fortis Hospital</keyword>, <keyword id="6361194" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="vasant-kunj" source="Orion">Vasant Kunj</keyword>, decided to perform the procedure - a technique arguably first described in medical literature in 1854 - as the newer and more sophisticated ones were not feasible due to the patient's precarious condition, the hospital said. A flap surgery involves lifting tissue from a donor site and placing it on the recipient site with an intact blood supply. It was considered the gold standard to reconstruct soft tissue defects of the lower limb during its heydays. However, the technique fell into disuse with the advent of the highly sophisticated microvascular techniques, which enable doctors to join or repair damaged blood vessels or nerves, the hospital said. The road accident victim, who had undergone three unsuccessful surgeries in Iraq in eight months, was brought to the hospital with acute dislocation of the left knee joint and a severely infected, pus-oozing leg, the hospital said. Investigations revealed that the patient's affected leg had no intact blood vessel due to multiple injuries, which is necessary for the reconstructive surgeries currently in vogue. The doctors then decided to perform the cross-leg flap surgery. "After much deliberation, we decided to adopt a complex, multi-step approach. Though the treatment spanned over five weeks, the outcome is satisfactory," said Dr <keyword id="3583003" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="dhananjay-gupta" source="Orion">Dhananjay Gupta</keyword>, Director, Orthopaedics &amp; Joint Replacement Surgery, Fortis Vasant Kunj. "Presently, the patient's leg is well covered with soft tissue and there is no evidence of infection," he said. "The patient has been asked to start walking and he is currently undergoing physio-rehabilitation. We hope that once the fracture heals, over a period of three months, he will be able to take his full weight on that leg. We have also planned for additional procedures in the future, which may be required," Gupta added. The case was challenging because the patient had a severe infection and poor bone quality, the hospital said. "The patient's legs had to overlap each other, and he had to be kept in that position for three weeks." "So, placing it in a manner where there's no pressure between the two feet and making sure that there is no bending of the flap while it is taking up the new circulation was challenging and required planning, and of course cooperation of the patient," she added. The doctors had initially thought of doing a microvascular free flap reconstruction, which involves taking muscle and skin along with the blood vessels from either the back or the abdomen but had to abandon the idea as there was no intact blood vessel in the patient's leg. Fortis Hospital in Delhi performs a 19th century procedure to save Iraqi national's leg

At least 80 shops were gutted after a massive blaze broke out in Delhi's <keyword id="6359570" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="chandni-chowk" source="Orion">Chandni Chowk</keyword> area on Thursday, a fire department official said. Initially, 10 fire tenders were rushed to the spot, and later six more were sent. To reach the site, the fire officials faced a tough time due to the narrow lanes. A team of senior police personnel was also sent to the spot to assist the fire officials. The Centralised Accident &amp; Trauma Services (CATS) ambulance was also called for the rescue operation. "Luckily, no one was injured in the incident. The fire was brought under control by 8 a.m.," the fire official said. The official said that a short circuit might have caused the fire and damage to property is being ascertained. New Delhi, Dec 12 () Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Thursday road engineering is one of the key factors for a large number of accidents in the country.
Gadkari said his ministry is getting around Rs 14,000 crore to fix problems in the "black spots" of highways where repeated accidents take place.
"Drivers and vehicles are not alone responsible for the large number of accidents which take place in the country every year. Road engineering is also responsible for many accidents," he said during Question Hour in the Lok Sabha.
Gadkari said the ministry had taken up detailed review of the national highway network to develop road connectivity to border areas, development of coastal roads including road connectivity for non-major ports, improvement in the efficiency of national corridors.
The minister said development of economic corridors, inter-corridors and feeder routes along with integration with Sagarmala and others, under the 'Bharatmala Pariyojana' have been reviewed.
Under this proposal, the ministry has identified stretches for development of about 26,200 km length of economic corridors, 8,000 km of inter-corridors, 7,500 km of feeder routes, 5,300 km border and international connectivity roads, 4,100 km coastal and port connectivity roads, 1,900 km expressways, Gadkari said. Unlike the normal crutches that are rubbered at the ends, the Flexmotiv is a leg-shaped structure with ‘toe and heel’ at the ends. This is designed to allow users to walk through muddy roads and bumpy areas. The developers hit upon the idea after a friend’s accident. It took nearly two years to develop it. “The device is designed in a way that it improves the surface adaptability thus reducing the jarring forces from 5% - 10% while walking thereby improving the user performance by 10% - 20%,” he added.
