In a notification on Thursday, it said, "The Academic Session 2020-2021 of the university will commence from August 10 with start of online classes for the III, V and VII semester of UG courses and III semester of PG courses subject to the prevailing pandemic or any other exigency." The Delhi University will be holding online open book exams from August 10 for final year students, amid opposition from students and teachers. They have been demanding that exams be scrapped and students be promoted on the basis of past performance and internal assessment. The university has graded first and second year students on the basis of their internal assessment and their performance in the previous semester. Delhi University to begin academic session from August 10 with online classes

The Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad (<keyword id="3444279" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="upmsp" source="Orion">UPMSP</keyword>) has decided that 100 per cent of the syllabus would be taught to students from this academic session. The decision will be implemented in all 28,000 schools affiliated with the <keyword id="119108" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="up-board" source="Orion">UP Board</keyword>. During the pandemic, the board had reduced the syllabus by 30 per cent for Classes 9 to 12. The practice continued till the last academic session. However, from the new session, the entire syllabus will be taught in all subjects. The new session will start on April 1. UP Board secretary <keyword id="4814406" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="divyakant-shukla" source="Orion">Divyakant Shukla</keyword> said, "During the last two years, due to Covid-19, regular teaching and learning in schools were disrupted. Keeping in view the interest of the students, the course committee recommended the curtailment of 30 per cent of the annual course. Under this, the curriculum in schools was shortened. Now, as the conditions have returned to normal, 100 per cent of the syllabus will be taught from the new academic session." The UP Board secretary added that the secondary schools are back to their regular routine after two years and hence, there is no justification left for the curtailment of the syllabus. The UP Board has also laid emphasis on paying attention to extra-curricular activities for the all-around development of the students from the new session. "It is a global threat and students should be aware of it," Dash said. COVID-19 management and climate change will be included in the syllabus in the second term of the current academic year. Due to the pandemic situation, only 75 per cent of the syllabus was taught in the last couple of years, but from the current academic session, 100 per cent of the class 10 syllabus will be covered and questions asked accordingly in the board examinations, the minister said. The Board of Secondary Education (BSE), Odisha has on Saturday notified the scheme of assessment, and syllabus breakup for the 2022-23 academic session, which has been approved by the School and Mass Education Department in June 2022. As per the official notification, the 2022-23 academic session will be from May 2022 to April 2023, and it will be divided into two terms. The first term will be from May to October 2022 and the second from November 2022 to April 2023. Odisha students will now learn about Covid-19, climate change at schools

Universities and <keyword id="20257650" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="higher-education-institutions" source="keywords">higher education institutions</keyword> in India can now admit students twice a year similar to the admission process followed by universities abroad, according to the <keyword id="19932585" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="University-Grants-Commission" source="keywords">University Grants Commission</keyword> (UGC) Chairman Jagadeesh Kumar. The two admission cycles will be July-August and January-February from the 2024-25 academic session. "If <keyword id="21269142" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-universities" source="keywords">Indian universities</keyword> can offer admission twice a year, it will benefit many students. Such as those who missed admission to a university in the July/August session due to a delay in the announcement of board results, health issues, or personal reasons. Biannual university admissions will help students maintain motivation since they do not have to wait one full year to be admitted if they miss admission in the current cycle," UGC Chairman Kumar said on Tuesday. Currently, UGC Regulations allow the Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to admit students in one academic session in a year starting in July/August. An 'Academic session' is twelve months, beginning in July/August. Indian HEIs, therefore, follow the academic session that begins in July-August and ends in May-June. UGC had decided in its 571st commission held on 25 July 2023 to permit <keyword id="22014108" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="biannual-admissions" source="keywords">biannual admissions</keyword> under Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and Online modes in January and July during an academic year. As per the information furnished by the HEIs on the UGC DEB portal, in addition to a total of 19,73,056 students were enrolled in July 2022 and an additional 4,28,854 students joined in January 2023 in ODL and online programs. Considering the tremendous response and interest from the students in ODL and online programs in biannual admissions, in its meeting held on May 15 this year the UGC took a policy decision to allow Higher Education Institutions who offer programs in regular mode to admit students twice in a year, either in January/February or July/August from the coming academic year, the UGC chairman said. Those institutions that have the required infrastructure and teaching faculty can utilize the opportunity to admit students biannually. Offering biannual admissions is not mandatory for the HEIs; it is the flexibility that UGC provides to the HEIs who want to increase their student intake and offer new programmes in emerging areas. To be able to admit students twice a year, HEIs must make suitable amendments to their institutional regulations. UGC Chairman Kumar said, "With biannual admissions in place, Industries can also do their <keyword id="22014800" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="campus-recruitment" source="keywords">campus recruitment</keyword> twice a year, improving employment opportunities for the graduates." Biannual admissions will also enable the HEIs to plan their resource distribution, such as faculty, labs, classrooms and support services, more efficiently, resulting in a better functional flow within the university, he said. Noting that Universities worldwide already follow a biannual admission system, he said that if Indian institutions adopt the biannual admission cycle, they can enhance their international collaborations and student exchanges. "As a result, our global competitiveness will improve, and we will align with the global educational standards," the UGC Chairman said. Biannual admissions can substantially increase the Gross Enrolment Ratio and make India a 'Global Study Destination' as envisioned in National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, he said. Further, Kumar said that if HEIs adopt biannual admissions, they need to work on administrative intricacies, good planning for increased use of available resources, and providing seamless support systems for the smooth transition of students admitted at dissimilar times of the year. Universities in India can now admit students twice a year on lines of foreign varsities: UGC chairman

Bifurcating the academic session, holding two term-end exams and rationalising the syllabus were part of the special assessment scheme for class 10 and 12 board examinations in 2021-22 announced by the <keyword id="69419" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Central-Board-of-Secondary-Education">Central Board of Secondary Education</keyword> (<keyword id="6356155" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="cbse">CBSE</keyword>) on Monday in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. The term one exams will be conducted by the Board in November-December, 2021 while the second term exams will be conducted in March-April, 2022, as per an official order by <keyword id="606469" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Joseph-Emmanuel">Joseph Emmanuel</keyword>, Director (Academic) of the CBSE. The syllabus for the board examination will be rationalised, similar to that of the last academic session, and will be notified in July 2021, it said and also announced plans to make the internal assessment and project work more "credible" and "valid". At the end of the first term, the board will organise exams in a flexible schedule between November-December 2021 with a window period of 4-8 weeks for schools situated in different parts of the country and abroad. "The exams will have Multiple Choice Questions (<keyword id="110202" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="McQ">MCQ</keyword>) including case-based MCQs and MCQs on assertion-reasoning type. Duration of test will be 90 minutes and it will cover only the rationalised syllabus of the first term. The question papers will be sent by the CBSE to schools along with the marking scheme. "The exams will be conducted under the supervision of the external center superintendents and observers appointed by CBSE. The responses of students will be captured on <keyword id="6470854" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="omr">OMR</keyword> sheets which, after scanning may be directly uploaded at the CBSE portal or alternatively may be evaluated and marks obtained will be uploaded by the school on the very same day," he added. At the end of the second term, the board would organise Term <keyword id="254453" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="II">II</keyword> or year-end examination based on the rationalised syllabus. "This examination would be held around March-April 2022 at the examination centres fixed by the board. The paper will be of two hours duration and have questions of different formats (case-based/ situation based, open ended- short answer/ long answer type). "In case the situation is not conducive for normal descriptive examination a 90-minute MCQ-based exam will be conducted at the end of the second term also," Emmanuel said. The CBSE has decided that in case the situation of the pandemic improves and students are able to come to schools or centres for taking the exams, the board would conduct Term I and II examinations at schools or centres and the theory marks will be distributed equally between the two exams. "In case the situation of the pandemic forces complete closure of schools during November-December 2021, but second term exams are held at schools or centres, the Term I MCQ based examination would be done by students online or offline from home but their weightage will be reduced in the final score," he said. Similarly, if the November-December exams are conducted in schools or centres and situation is not conducive in March-April, the result will be declared on basis of first term exams. "In case the situation of the pandemic forces complete closure of schools and Board conducted Term I and II exams are taken by the candidates from home in the session 2021-22, results would be computed on the basis of their marks clubbed with internal assessment subject to the moderation or other measures to ensure validity and reliability of the assessment," Emmanuel explained. The syllabus for the academic session 2021-22 will be divided into two terms by following a systematic approach by looking into the interconnectivity of concepts and topics by the Subject Experts. "The Board will conduct examinations at the end of each term on the basis of the bifurcated syllabus. This has been done to increase the probability of having a board conducted classes 10 and 12 examinations at the end of the academic session," he said. Schools will also use alternative academic calendar and inputs from the NCERT on transacting the curriculum. "Efforts will be made to make internal assessment, practical, project work more credible and valid as per the guidelines and moderation policy to be announced by the board to ensure fair distribution of marks," he added. The announcement by the CBSE comes after the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of board exams this year after much uncertainty. Last year too, exams of some subjects were not held. "The cancellation of exams also necessitated deliberations over alternative ways to look at the learning objectives as well as the conduct of the board examinations for next academic session in case the situation remains unfeasible," Emmanuel said. The board said that the decision has been arrived at following stakeholder consultations with government and private schools from across the country including the ones from remote rural areas and a majority of them have requested for the rationalisation of the syllabus, similar to last year in view of reduced time permitted for organising online classes. "The board has also considered the concerns regarding differential availability of electronic gadgets, connectivity and effectiveness of online teaching and other socio-economic issues specially with respect to students from economically weaker section and those residing in far-flung areas of the country," Emmanuel said. Board exams 2022: CBSE announces special assessment scheme, two term-end exams to be conducted

The University of Delhi has released a list of 6,100 <keyword id="21977691" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vacant-seats" source="keywords">vacant seats</keyword> for the second round of undergraduate <keyword id="19962926" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="admissions" source="keywords">admissions</keyword>, following the conclusion of the first round. Vacant seats have been displayed on the dashboards of the candidates. With 91.98 per cent (65,843) of seats already filled, candidates have been provided the opportunity to re-order their (college and course) preferences from August 22 to 23. The university aims to begin the <keyword id="20248930" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="academic-session" source="keywords">academic session</keyword> on August 29. As many as 65,843 candidates have confirmed their admission to undergraduate courses at <keyword id="19927119" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi-university" source="keywords">Delhi University</keyword> in the first round. Early this month, the university began the allocation acceptance process, offering 97,387 seats in the first round. To ensure optimal seat occupancy, the administration decided to make extra allocations, targeting an academic session starting on August 29. The university is conducting admissions for 71,600 seats (excluding supernumerary seats) in 69 colleges and departments. There are 1,559 programme-college combinations available for admissions. This year, DU has introduced a feature on the candidates' dashboard, enabling them to view the details of <keyword id="22889419" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cutoffs-and-ranks" source="keywords">cutoffs and ranks</keyword> determining seat allocation based on category and quota. Earlier in the month, the University of Delhi (DU) climbed five spots to secure the 6th position in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (<keyword id="20051367" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nirf" source="keywords">NIRF</keyword>) 2024. DU Vice Chancellor Professor Yogesh Singh attributed this achievement to the collective efforts of the university's faculty, students, and staff. In the university category at the national level, DU had previously moved up two spots to reach the 11th position last year. This year, the university continued its upward trajectory, also climbing seven places in the overall ranking to secure the 15th spot.
