Its name is a reference to Dane County, the home of Madison. </p><p>Oleksiak said the nonprofit works closely with local city governments, businesses, and residents to achieve, plan, implement, and execute sustainability projects. The organization, which has five full-time employees and paid interns throughout the year, also provides funding in some cases to carry out some of the community-wide projects. </p><p>"We get to be nimble," she said. "We have more flexibility to innovate or move quicker than you can in a larger organization or a government structure." </p><p>Here's a look at some of Sustain Dane's projects. </p><h2><strong>Making affordable housing more energy-efficient and healthy for residents</strong></h2><p>Affordable housing in Madison uses <a href="https://sustaindane.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/SD-2020-Annual-Report.pdf" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">33% more energy</a> than other housing stock, often because it's older. Sustain Dane is working on a project with the city and the local nonprofit <a href="https://www.elevatenp.org/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Elevate</a> to upgrade 100 of these units to be more sustainable through a program called <a href="https://sustaindane.org/sustain-dane-programs/#:~:text=The%20program%20is%20for%20renter,sustaindane.org%20to%20get%20involved." target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Efficiency Navigator</a>. </p><p>The program provides $10,000 to $20,000 for upgrades like efficient lighting, insulation improvements, air sealing, water conservation systems, removing unhealthy building elements, and improved heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. Upgrading the homes will boost water and energy savings by 10% to 20%, according to the organization.</p><p>The first phase of the program involved building assessments and coordinating with contractors, Oleksiak said. Now they're in the implementation phase. </p><p>A recent project involved adding insulation to the exterior walls of a brick, multifamily building. "The residents said as soon as they walked back into their units, they felt it was warmer and more comfortable," she added. The program also includes a diverse contractor accelerator to provide opportunities for contractors from underrepresented groups to train and work on these projects.</p><h2><strong>Reducing food waste in schools and restaurants </strong></h2><div type="image" title="three people sifting through milk cartons" height="1134" width="1511" msid="90988261" hostid="261"></div><p>Sustain Dane partners with local school cafeterias to collect milk cartons and recycle them, as well as educates teachers, staff, and students on recycling.</p><p>Oleksiak said the organization is also conducting food waste audits to help schools uncover how much food per meal is wasted and find solutions to the problem, such as menu changes, a composting program, and a sharing system where students can take home leftover food.</p><p>Outside the classroom, Sustain Dane is educating about a dozen restaurants on their food waste streams and how to reduce waste by reducing portion sizes and expiration date labeling, and helping them track their progress. </p><p>In May, Sustain Dane plans to launch a composting program with the city at local farmers' markets, where residents can drop off food scraps to be taken to a farm for composting.</p><p>"The city has a goal of <a href="https://www.cityofmadison.com/mayor/programs/food/madison-food-policy-council/food-waste-reduction-taskforce" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">reduction in food waste</a>," Oleksiak said. "They have challenges with those logistics of collection and farm partnerships, and we're able to act as a bridge to help bring everyone together." </p><h2><strong>Educating businesses and residents on sustainability projects</strong></h2><div type="image" title="a Zoom screenshot from a sustainability workshop" height="683" width="1285" msid="90988263" hostid="261"></div><p>In 2021, 21 organizations and 26 individuals participated in Sustain Dane's <a href="https://sustaindane.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/ASW-Recap-doc-2021-Final.pdf" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Accelerate Sustainability Workshops</a>, which help businesses and individuals kickstart their own sustainability projects in areas like renewable energy, energy efficiency, waste reduction, and equity and wellness. </p><p>Sessions cover <a href="https://cityofmadison.com/sites/default/files/news/attachments/climate_forward.pdf" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Madison's climate action plan</a> and case studies of projects that have worked for other businesses and organizations. Participants can also get help completing a sustainable project, such as installing LED light bulbs or solar panels, composting, or challenging employees to use alternative transportation.</p><p>Additionally, the organization engages residents via volunteer events throughout the year, such as trash pick-up or tree planting. Its <a href="https://sustaindane.org/sustain-dane-programs/#launchingsustainabilityworkshops" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Master Recycler</a> program helps residents teach their family, friends, neighbors, and coworkers about improving recycling and community-wide sustainability efforts — including what's recyclable and what isn't.</p><div type="image" title="two women holding recyclables and an aware" height="960" width="1280" msid="90988266" hostid="261"></div>Oleksiak said all of Sustain Dane's work is approached as a "journey, an open door," and residents are a key part of that.<p>"This is a really supportive community, and there's no perfect way to be sustainable," she said. The Ashley Madison hackers alerted the company to the hack by taking over their computers and playing 'Thunderstruck' by AC/DC

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>BI</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>A Toronto Police Service press conference on Monday shed significant new light on the fallout from the devastating hack of Ashley Madison, an dating website specialising in extra-marital affairs. </p><p>Superintendent Bryce Evans announced that Avid Life Media, the parent company of Ashley Madison, is offering a $500,000 reward for information leading to the succesful arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the leak of more than 30 million customers' personal information.</p><p>Evans also said that there have also been two unconfirmed reports of suicides linked to the leak of data, which has the potential to be highly compromising and includes email addresses and sexual preferences.</p><p>Describing the hack as as "one of the largest data breaches in the world," Evans said that the attack will "have a longterm social and economic impact," and has "already sparked spinoff crimes, and victimisations." The officer said the department "received the call this morning" about the suicides, which he stressed were unconfirmed. He did not provide further details.</p><p class="p1">The press conference also provided further information on the timeline of the breach. Evans says that Avid Life Media first became aware that its systems were breached on July 12. Employees came into work and loaded up their computers, at which point they were greeted with a message informing them that they had been hacked, and demanding that the company close down Ashley Madison as well as sister site Established Men. There have already been multiple reports of extortion attempts of users, with would-be blackmailers threatening to "out" members unless they pay a bitcoin ransom. Cyclists Are Bashing This 'Dangerous' Car Ad

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The American Colonization Society's mission was to relocate freed Black Americans to Africa.</li><li>Starting in 1820, thousands of Black emigrants were shipped to what would become Liberia.</li></ul><p>On December 21, 1816, a group of fifty white elites gathered in a Washington, D.C. hotel to discuss the future of freed Black Americans.</p><p>Following the American Revolution, the number of freed Black Americans <a href="https://www.proquest.com/openview/fa85694078c1c4081dc1a92251cd0e6b/1?pq-origsite=gscholar&amp;cbl=47709">had grown</a> from 60,000 in 1790 to 300,000 by 1830. The American Colonization Society <a href="https://www.jstor.org/stable/44212334">emerged</a> as the solution, with the mission of shipping Black people to a colony in Africa.</p><p>The organization was the brainchild of the Reverend Robert Finley, a Presbyterian minister from New Jersey. The ACS' early supporters <a href="https://www.whitehousehistory.org/the-american-colonization-society">included</a> some of the nation's most powerful and influential men, including Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, and Francis Scott Key, <a href="https://www.history.com/news/slavery-american-colonization-society-liberia">as well as</a> slave-owning US presidents Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, and James Madison.</p><p>"Can there be a nobler cause than that which, while it proposes to rid our country of a useless and pernicious, if not a dangerous portion of our population, contemplates the spreading of the arts of civilized life?" Henry Clay's signature as president of the Society is visible at the bottom." height="2006" width="2700" msid="93436087" hostid="261" sizebytes="401368"></div><p>Colonization, the state-sponsored emigration and resettlement of freed Black Americans outside America, was widely supported in the US for religious, economic, and social reasons. Even after its dissolution in 1964, the ACS has left a lasting legacy of segregationist sentiment in both America and abroad, according to historians.</p><p>"The establishment of the American Colonization Society was a watershed moment in American history," Eric Burin, a history professor at the University of North Dakota, said. "What you have is a powerful white organization propounding a vision of America as a white person's country, and African Americans responding with a resounding rebuttal that it's their country, too."</p><h2><strong>A 'miserable mockery'</strong></h2><p>The ACS attracted a diverse crowd of white individuals, including slaveholders who saw colonization as a way to remove freed Blacks, whom they feared would cause chaos by helping their slaves escape or rebel.</p><p>Many white Americans also believed that African Americans were inferior, and should be relocated to a place where they could live in peace away from the shackles of slavery. Abraham Lincoln held this belief, which led him to support <a href="https://www.insider.com/abraham-lincoln-colonization-ile-a-vache-haiti-emancipation-slavery-racism-2022-7">a plan to relocate 5,000 Black Americans to the Caribbean in the 1860s.</a></p><p>The ACS also had a religious mission of Christianizing Africa to "civilize" the continent, according to historian Marc Leepson.</p><p>The initial reactions of the Black American community and abolitionists were nuanced. Some activists, like James Fortein, immediately rejected the ACS, <a href="https://www.google.com/books/edition/Early_Negro_Writing_1760_1837/gaUFeuToWhwC?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;pg=PA250&amp;printsec=frontcover">writing</a> in 1817 that "we have no wish to separate from our present homes for any purpose whatever".</p><p>But some other Black abolitionists were cautiously interested in the notion of an emigration program. Martin Delany, who was dismissed from Harvard Medical School after white students petitioned against the inclusion of Black students, claimed that even abolitionists would never accept Black Americans as equals, and so the solution lay in the emigration of all Black Americans.</p><p>"We are a nation within a nation," Delany <a href="https://www.gutenberg.org/files/17154/17154-h/17154-h.htm">wrote</a>. "We must go from among our oppressors."</p><p>But even Delany ultimately <a href="https://www.cambridge.org/core/books/abs/romantic-reformers-and-the-antislavery-struggle-in-the-civil-war-era/african-dreams-american-realities-martin-robison-delany-and-the-emigration-question/5B373616CF5EEA1914DE72CB11DD7DFD">condemned</a> the ACS's hallmark plan to send Black Americans to Liberia, decrying it as a "miserable mockery" of an independent republic.</p><h2><strong>It led to the creation of Liberia</strong></h2><p>As the ACS grew, it sought to create a colony in West Africa. On February 6, 1820, 86 freed Black Americans set sail to the continent.</p><div type="image" title="Map of Liberia, 1850." height="696" width="972" msid="93436089" hostid="261" sizebytes="59520"></div><p>The initial expedition — and the expeditions that followed — proved to be disastrous as disease and famine struck. Of the more than 4,500 emigrants who arrived in Liberia between 1820 and 1843, only 40% were <a href="https://www.jstor.org/stable/180566">alive</a> by 1843.</p><p>But the ACS, backed by funding from state and federal governments, continued to send more freed Blacks. In 1821, the society purchased Cape Mesurado from the indigenous people — by threatening the use of force, <a href="https://www.loc.gov/collections/maps-of-liberia-1830-to-1870/articles-and-essays/history-of-liberia/1820-to-1847/">according to</a> some accounts.</p><p>The land surrounding Cape Montserrado would later be known as Liberia, "the free land." Its capital was renamed Monrovia in honor of James Monroe, an ardent supporter of the ACS.</p><p>The settlers developed an Americo-Liberian society that was strongly influenced by their roots in the American South, according to Burin. Americo-Liberians wielded vast socioeconomic and political power over the indigenous people — which planted the seeds for the Liberian Civil War of 1989.</p><p>"The Americo-Liberians realized they could essentially exploit the indigenous people for labor," Burin told Insider. But it was a way for indigenous people to gain access to resources and education as well.</p><h2><strong>A lasting legacy of segregationist sentiment</strong></h2><p>Though the ACS eventually dissolved in 1964 after continuous opposition from abolitionists and a lack of interest by free Black Americans, historians said it shaped — and continues to shape — the country's discussions of race.</p><p>"One of the ACS' lasting legacies was the underlying ideology that drove the colonization movement forward: that Black people really aren't Americans, at least not in the way that white people are," Burin said.</p><p>The sentiment manifested itself in policies like Jim Crow-era segregation, and still has a grip on some Americans to this day. </p><div type="image" title="A group of African children pose for a photo in Liberia, taken during a mission trip." height="2819" width="3564" msid="93436091" hostid="261" sizebytes="668012"></div><p>The second legacy of the ACS is Liberia itself. In 1847, Liberians <a href="https://history.state.gov/milestones/1830-1860/liberia">declared</a> the country an independent nation, becoming the second Black republic in the Atlantic after Haiti.</p><p>"The ACS founded a country that has had a distinctive influence over debates of freedom, slavery, and race today," Burin said.</p>

In the 1800s, the American Colonization Society relocated thousands of freed Black Americans to West Africa. It led to the creation of Liberia.

<p>Some blocks and neighborhoods in New York City are so full of rich people that the Census Bureau can't reveal exactly how rich they are.</p>
<p>The Census Bureau recently released data from the <a href="http://www.census.gov/acs/www/">2009-2013 American Community Survey</a>. The survey provides an amazingly comprehensive look at the demographic, social, and economic makeup of the country. In this data set, for the first time, the Census Bureau has released ACS estimates at the block group level. A <a href="https://www.census.gov/geo/reference/gtc/gtc_bg.html">block group</a> for an urban area is essentially a block, small group of blocks, or a small neighborhood. Previously, data at this fine geographic scale was only available from the results of the full Census, performed every 10 years.</p>
<p>One of the many variables the ACS investigates is household income. As part of the Census Bureau's mandate to protect survey respondent confidentiality, income estimates are "top-coded:" in areas where the median household income is higher than $250,000 per year, the Census Bureau simply indicates this, rather than providing an actual estimate.</p>
<p>In New York City, there were a handful of block groups with populations of at least 500 that fell into this top-coded median income category. One was in Brooklyn, and the rest were in Manhattan. Here they are:</p>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Business Insider / Jillian D'Onfro</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Hot on the heels of Apple's announcement of its new TV streaming device, Amazon is revamping its own product offerings for the living room with a redesigned Fire TV settop box.</p><p>Although its original version had voice controls, the new device goes one step further by integrating with Alexa, the smart assistant that powers <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-echo-smart-home-assistant-2015-4">its home assistant product, Amazon Echo</a>.</p><p>With Alexa, you can use the microphone button on the remote not only to find content more easily, but also to ask general questions like, "What's the weather in Seattle?" if you're going on a trip, or "What was the score of last night's Giants game?"</p><p>Alexa through your Fire TV can do almost everything that Alexa in the Amazon Echo can do, and an exec leading a demo says that the goal is to eventually get absolute parity between the two. For people who thought Echo seemed appealing, the Fire TV is now a great deal: You get Alexa capabilities as well as video streaming and gaming for $99, versus the $179 that you'd pay for the Echo speaker (the main difference is that to access Alexa in the Fire TV you have to press the button on the remote, versus just speak, like you do with Echo). </p><p>Besides the Alexa integration, Amazon says its new Fire TV box streams higher quality video, faster. It uses high-efficiency video coding (HEVC) which means that less bandwith is needed to achieve higher-definition video resolution. That, combined with its 802.11 ac MIMO Wi-fi technology, means that even people who don't have a great connection will see crisp, un-laggy streams, without wait-times between shows. </p><p>The Fire TV also comes with Amazon's "Mayday" button. First launched with its tablets a few years ago, Mayday gives you <span>live, on-screen customer support 24 hours a day.
