As part of the agreement, Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail would get exclusive rights to distribute and sell Reebok products through wholesale, ecommerce and Reebok-branded retail stores in India and ASEAN countries. ASEAN includes ten Southeast Asian countries — Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. The Indian company — which sits on a market cap of ₹26,470.75 (nearly $3.5 billion), as on December 16 — will pay a consideration of ₹8,000 crore to ₹10,000 crore towards purchase of inventory and other current assets as well as liabilities. According to Edelweiss’ latest report, Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail is guaranteed to make returns on this investment as Reebok has reported a profit after tax (PAT) of ₹5,000 crore globally between fiscal year 2018 and 2020. Germany’s Adidas had bought Reebok back in 2006, at the time when Reebok was leading the Indian sportswear market. However, Reebok has been struggling over the past few years and other sports-wear brands — Adidas, Puma and Nike — are clocking higher revenue. Keeping this in mind, Adidas decided to sell the brand to Authentic Brands Group (ABG) and the transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2022. Aditya Birla Fashion will now sell Reebok products in 11 Asian countries — and it may reap benefits soon

Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Ltd (<keyword id="3360476" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="abfrl" source="Orion">ABFRL</keyword>) on Thursday announced a strategic partnership with leading French department store player <keyword id="757210" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="galeries-lafayette" source="Orion">Galeries Lafayette</keyword>, to open luxury department stores and a dedicated e-commerce platform in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>. Their flagship stores in Mumbai and Delhi will have more than 200 luxury and designer brands under one roof said a joint statement. The 90,000 square feet flagship store in Mumbai is expected to be operational by 2024. While 65,000 square feet of a store in Delhi is expected to be operational in 2025, it added. "India is now home to a generation of young and affluent consumers with global exposure, who are willing to spend on the finer things in life. This is visible in the boom and dynamism of the luxury market. "The partnership with Galeries Lafayette is a ringing endorsement of India's significance as a global luxury market and a future engine of growth for luxury brands," ABFRL Managing Director Ashish Dikshit said. Galeries Lafayette, which has been in fashion and experienced marketing for 125 years, has a network of 65 stores in France and abroad. The Galeries Lafayette brand covers a range of segments taking in fashion and accessories, decoration, food and catering. Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail to open Galeries Lafayette stores in India

Direct to consumer is when a brand sells their products directly to consumers without selling through any third party retailers, wholesalers etc. Some of the popular D2C brands in the market are MyGlamm, Mamaearth, Wow Skin Science, BoAT, and Go Noise and the number of these brands in India has more than doubled in the last two years, according to consulting firm Bain and Company. Platforms selling D2C brands include Meesho, Tata Cliq, Myntra, Nykaa and Ajio. However, ABFRL’s business model will be similar to the New York-based e-commerce player Thrasio, which acquires small merchants and brands listed on Amazon marketplace. Thrasio has acquired more than 100 third party sellers or fulfilled by Amazon (FBA) businesses and is valued at $6 billion. Indian players like 10Club, Mensa Brands (founded by Myntra's former CEO Ananth Narayanan) and GlobalBees (founded by FirstCry founder Supam Maheshwari and Edelweiss' former executive Nitin Agarwal) have garnered the interest of investors. Their flagship stores in Mumbai and Delhi will have more than 200 luxury and designer brands under one roof, said a joint statement. The 90,000 square feet flagship store in Mumbai is expected to be operational by 2024. While 65,000 square feet of store in Delhi is expected to be operational in 2025, it added. "India is now home to a generation of young and affluent consumers with global exposure, who are willing to spend on the finer things in life. This is visible in the boom and dynamism of the luxury market. "The partnership with Galeries Lafayette is a ringing endorsement of India's significance as a global luxury market and a future engine of growth for luxury brands," ABFRL Managing Director Ashish Dikshit said. Galeries Lafayette, which has been in fashion and experienced marketing for 125 years, has a network of 65 stores in France and abroad. The Galeries Lafayette brand covers a range of segments taking in fashion and accessories, decoration, food and catering. "We are proud to expand our international footprint in such a prestigious and refined market as India, where we believe our brand can benefit from a strong potential.
