The character was last seen as a much older man in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2," played in that film by Ciarán Hinds. </p><p>There were plenty of unanswered questions about the Dumbledore family at the end of the previous "Fantastic Beasts" film, "The Crimes of Grindelwald." Percival Dumbledore, Albus and Aberforth's father, was imprisoned before Albus entered Hogwarts in 1892. Their mother, Kendra, died in 1899. </p><p>However, Ezra Miller, who plays Credence in the films, <a href="https://www.seacoastonline.com/story/entertainment/movies/2016/11/10/miller-continues-to-open-and-walk-through-all-kinds-of-entertainment-doors/24577613007/">stated that the character was 18 years old in the first "Fantastic Beasts,"</a> which is set in 1926. That would place his birth somewhere around 1907 or 1908, and it would have been impossible for him to have been born to either of the Dumbledore parents. </p><p>There was some speculation at the time that Credence could have been tied to Albus and Aberforth's aunt, Honoria, who is first mentioned in the spin-off book "The Tales of Beedle the Bard." However, little was known about her. </p><h2><strong>It turns out that Credence isn't Albus' brother — he's his nephew</strong></h2><p>"The Secrets of Dumbledore" circumvents the timeline issues by revealing that Credence — or rather, Aurelius — isn't Albus' brother. He's Aberforth's son, which makes him Albus' nephew.</p><p>Albus explains to Newt in a conversation at <a href="https://www.insider.com/harry-potter-books-details-foreshadowing-2017-11#there-are-several-clues-leading-up-to-the-reveal-that-aberforth-dumbledore-is-the-barman-at-the-hogs-head-15">Aberforth's pub</a> that the same summer he and Grindelwald fell in love, Aberforth also had a relationship with a girl who also lived in Godric's Hollow. The girl, Albus says, was eventually sent away amid rumors of a child. </p><p>While Albus was unaware of the child, he said that the boy would have been a part of their lives had he known. </p><p>Furthermore, he <a href="https://www.insider.com/fantastic-beasts-hints-ariana-dumbledore-2016-11">confirms a long-held theory that his sister Ariana</a>, who died during a three-way duel between Albus, Aberforth, and Grindelwald, was an Obscurial like Credence. </p><h2><strong>Aberforth and Credence reunite at the end of the film</strong></h2><p>Aberforth travels to Bhutan with the rest of the crew in pursuit of Grindelwald, and for the International Confederation of Wizards convention. </p><p>When he's there, he's able to finally reunite with Credence/Aurelius, who betrays Grindelwald by telling those assembled that the qilin that chose him was, in fact, dead, and had been charmed by the dark wizard. </p><p>The two also have a brief exchange that hearkens back to one of the most oft-quoted lines in the entire "Harry Potter" franchise. When Aurelius asks if Aberforth ever thought of him, Aberforth replies, "Always."</p><p>The line <a href="https://www.insider.com/harry-potter-reunion-special-alan-rickman-tribute-always-2022-1">was originally said by Severus Snape</a> in the series' eighth and final film. When Dumbledore asks him if, after all this time, he's still in love with Harry's mother Lily, he replies, "Always." </p>

The two rivals, and former lovers, are at odds in history, but the first two "Fantastic Beasts" films have made it impossible for them to fight each other just yet. </p><p>"Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore" finally reveals how it's possible for Dumbledore and Grindelwald to have their giant showdown that ultimately ends in Grindelwald's imprisonment. </p><p><strong>Warning: Major spoilers for "Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore" ahead.</strong></p><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Fantastic Beasts 3 Dumbledore" height="1112" width="1482" msid="90857265" hostid="261"></div><h2><strong>Dumbledore and Grindelwald took a blood oath to not fight each other</strong></h2><p>"Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald," the second film in the series, reveals that as teenagers Dumbledore and Grindelwald undertook a blood pact that wouldn't allow them to move against each other. It was the biggest obstacle in the way of the duel between the two that we know, from past "Potter" lore, to eventually occur in 1945. </p><p>At the end of the second film, Newt delivers the pendant containing Dumbledore's and Grindelwald's drops of blood to Dumbledore, correctly guessing that it's a blood pact. Dumbledore says that he may be able to destroy it, but it's unclear. </p><h2><strong>Dumbledore struggles with the blood pact throughout 'The Secrets of Dumbledore'</strong></h2><p>The consequences of violating the blood pact were unclear in the second film. However, in an exchange at the Hog's Head, Aberforth Dumbledore's pub, at the beginning of "The Secrets of Dumbledore," Albus briefly demonstrates for Newt and Theseus what would happen if he attempted to move against Grindelwald.</p><p>The chain attached to the pendant begins to constrict around his skin, and the pendant itself becomes agitated.</p><p>Dumbledore warns that there could be consequences even if the pact sensed a betrayal in his heart. </p><h2><strong>The pact eventually breaks in a recreation of an old three-way duel</strong><strong> </strong></h2><p>In Bhutan, Grindelwald moves to attack Credence (who's really Aurelius, Aberforth's son) after he betrays the dark wizard, revealing to those present that the qilin that chose Grindelwald was in fact a charmed corpse. Aberforth and Albus both move to protect Credence/Aurelius, effectively recreating the long-ago duel that left Albus and Aberforth's sister Ariana dead.</p><p>Somehow, this three-way conflict breaks the blood pact. Even Albus isn't certain why, but it could have something to do with Grindelwald's desire to harm Credence conflicting with Albus' desire to protect him. </p><p>With the pact broken, Grindelwald and Albus engage in a brief duel that appears to take place in a separate, isolated dimension. It ends in a stalemate, and Grindelwald escapes consequences once again and flees Bhutan. </p><p>The pact being broken finally means the door is open for Dumbledore to eventually defeat Grindelwald in 1945. In his obituary for The Daily Prophet, which appears in the second chapter of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," Dumbledore's friend Elphias Doge wrote that "no Wizarding duel ever matched that between Dumbledore and Grindelwald in 1945."<strong><br /></strong></p><p><a href="https://variety.com/2022/film/news/fantastic-beasts-franchise-controversies-harry-potter-jk-rowling-johnny-depp-1235226541/">If the franchise continues</a>, perhaps that duel is something we'll see in a future "Fantastic Beasts" film.</p>

But instead of explaining as much as he could, Dumbledore tells him he's too young to know those answers yet.</p><p>He was apparently old enough to face grave danger and the most powerful dark wizard but too young to know the truth about his own history.</p><p>Later in "<keyword id="12067470" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="harry-potter" source="Orion">Harry Potter</keyword> and the Order of the Phoenix," withholding that information about Harry's connection to Voldemort came at the heavy price of <a href="https://www.insider.com/explanation-of-major-deaths-in-the-harry-potter-series-ranking">Sirius Black's life</a>.</p><p>If Harry knew how Voldemort could manipulate his mind, he wouldn't have fallen for the trap and rushed to the Department of Mysteries thinking he was going to save his godfather.</p><p>Dumbledore explicitly knew this was a possibility, but he decided not to tell Harry. He calls his close-lipped approach "an old man's mistake" and explains that he was distant because he thought Voldemort might use Harry "as a means to spy" on him. </p><p>Dumbledore also knew about the prophecy that Professor Trelawney foretold long before Harry ever came to Hogwarts. He knew that in order to kill Voldemort, Harry likely had to die as well.</p><p>From the very first time Harry asked questions about his scar until Sirius' death, Dumbledore concealed all of this crucial information.</p><h2>Dumbledore was more interested in achieving his grand plans than communicating with the people around him</h2><div type="image" title="snape and dumbledore in his office harry potter" height="1163" width="1551" msid="87470088" hostid="261"></div><p>From the outset, Dumbledore acted like a man who was dealing with chess pieces rather than human lives. But the unilateral decisions he made affected everyone around him.</p><p>Even with the most talented and skilled witches in the Order of the Phoenix at his disposal, Dumbledore rarely seemed to involve anyone else in his grand plans. These people were ready to lay down their lives at his command, but Dumbledore gave them only enough information to make their next assigned move on his board. </p><p>The headmaster could have told the order about Voldemort's Horcruxes. But instead, he vaguely tells Remus Lupin, "Harry is the best hope we have. Trust him," once again putting all the responsibility and pressure on a teenage boy.</p><p>Before his death, Dumbledore believed <a href="https://www.insider.com/harry-potter-interesting-things-about-draco-malfoy-trivia-2021-9">Draco Malfoy</a> was tasked with his murder, but he didn't try to stop his advances all year, putting students' lives in danger. Then he went about planning his own demise with little regard for Harry, <a href="https://www.insider.com/severus-snape-interesting-things-from-harry-potter-trivia">Severus Snape</a>, or the students at Hogwarts.</p><p>He essentially guilts Snape into killing him, and to top it off, he puts Harry under a freezing charm nearby, effectively forcing him to watch powerlessly with no explanation.</p><p>Harry later learns that Snape actually called Dumbledore out for his less-than-transparent methods before his death.</p><p>Snape tells Dumbledore, "I have spied for you and lied for you, put myself in mortal danger for you. Everything was supposed to be to keep Lily Potter's son safe. Now you tell me you have been raising him like a pig for slaughter."</p><p>And Snape had little to show for the years of risking his life and bowing to Dumbledore's whims - aside from landing the long-coveted role of defense against the dark arts professor.</p><p>Dumbledore's brother, Aberforth perhaps puts it best when he tells Harry about Albus' long history with secrecy.</p><p>"My brother Albus wanted a lot of things, and people had a habit of getting hurt while he was carrying out his grand plans."</p><h2>Dumbledore might have been a great wizard, but his hunger for power and control kept him from being truly good</h2><div type="image" title="dumbledore giving speech in the great hall harry potter" height="1198" width="1602" msid="87470089" hostid="261"></div><p>At the end of <a href="https://www.insider.com/harry-potter-little-known-facts-2019-1">the series</a>, Dumbledore admits to Harry that power is his ultimate weakness.</p><p>He was always conscious of it, and he feared that power had the potential to corrupt him beyond help. But he constantly crossed the line between a stoic general and a scheming conspirator by never giving his followers enough information to make a free choice.</p><p>He gave everyone only enough to get them to do what he wanted.</p>

From the bits of information that are shared in the series, however, <a href="https://www.seventeen.com/celebrity/movies-tv/a12782020/ariana-dumbledore-obscurus-fan-theory/">fans have speculated that</a> she was an Obscurial — similar to Credence Barebone in the <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-movies-to-watch-if-you-loved-harry-potter">"Fantastic Beasts" series</a>.</p><p>Young wizards become Obscurials when they repress their magic so much that it manifests itself in violent and uncontrollable outbursts.</p><p>After her attack, Ariana did repress her magic out of fear, and in the seventh "Harry Potter" book Aberforth Dumbledore says, "It turned her inward and drove her mad, it exploded out of her when she couldn't control it."</p><p>Whether Ariana was an Obscurial has yet to be confirmed or denied, but more "Fantastic Beast" movies in the works will be looking into Dumbledore's past.</p><h2><strong>Dumbledore's boggart would have shape-shifted into the corpse of his sister</strong></h2><p>One of the greatest burdens in Dumbledore's life was the death of his sister, Ariana. She was a bystander during the duel between her brothers and Grindelwald, and she was accidentally hit with a curse in the cross fire.</p><p>In the same fan <a href="http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/2007/7/30/j-k-rowling-web-chat-transcript/">web chat with Bloomsbury</a>, Rowling said this moment had such an impact on Dumbledore that if he were to encounter a boggart, a creature that takes the shape of a wizard's worst fears, he would see the corpse of his sister.</p><h2><strong>He knew multiple languages</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Dumbledore office" height="794" width="1058" msid="78478712" hostid="261"></div><p>We all know Dumbledore was a highly intelligent wizard and gifted in many areas of magic, but what you may not know is that he was multilingual.</p><p>We learn throughout the books that he was able to speak Mermish with the merpeople who live in the lake on the Hogwarts grounds.</p><p>And, <a href="http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/2007/7/30/j-k-rowling-web-chat-transcript/">according to Rowling</a>, Dumbledore could also understand <a href="https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/everything-you-didnt-know-about-parseltongue">Parseltongue</a> and the goblin language Gobbledegook (though it's unclear whether he could actually speak those languages).</p><h2><strong>Many of Dumbledore's names hold significant or special meanings</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Dumbledore great hall" height="761" width="1015" msid="78478715" hostid="261"></div><p>Albus Wulfric Percival Brian Dumbledore is quite a mouthful, but <a href="https://www.insider.com/harry-potter-character-name-meaning-2017-4">like so many names</a> in the Wizarding World, each one holds a special meaning.</p><p>Albus <a href="https://www.online-latin-dictionary.com/latin-english-dictionary.php?parola=albus">means "white" in Latin</a>. Percival was a <a href="https://kingarthursknights.com/knights-of-the-round-table/sir-percival/">heroic knight</a> of the round table, and also the name of Albus' father. Wulfric is an Anglo-Saxon word meaning "wolf" or "powerful," but it could also refer to <a href="https://catholicsaints.info/saint-wulfric-of-haselbury/">St. Wulfric of Haselbury</a>, a miracle worker of the 12th century. Brian is an <a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?postID=5f74a3d0e155cf23c266ddca&amp;site=in&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ancestry.com%2Fname-origin%3Fsurname%3Dbrian">old Celtic name</a> meaning "high" or "noble."</p><p>And finally, Dumbledore is an old English <a href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/dumbledore">word for "bumblebee."</a></p><h2><strong>He wasn't originally from Godric's Hollow</strong></h2><p>In "Deathly Hallows," Harry is shocked to find out that Dumbledore was from Godric's Hollow, the same town he lived in with his parents before their murder. But Dumbledore didn't always call that town home.</p><p>His family resided in the Wizarding village of Mould-on-the-Wold during his early years. However, after the Muggle attack on Ariana and his father's imprisonment, his mother, Kendra, moved the family to Godric's Hollow.</p><h2><strong>Dumbledore's Patronus takes the shape of a phoenix</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="fawkes harry potter" height="839" width="1119" msid="78478717" hostid="261"></div><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/big-differences-between-harry-potter-books-and-movies">In the films</a>, we never actually see Dumbledore casting a Patronus — a spell most often used to shield a wizard or witch from a Dementor attack — but we do know what it takes the shape of.</p><p>In the "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" book, Dumbledore casts a Patronus to send a message to Hagrid after he finds Viktor Krum has been stunned, and Harry says it looks like a "ghostly bird."</p><p><a href="https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/what-is-a-patronus">Pottermore, now Wizarding World, confirmed</a> that his Patronus took the shape of a phoenix — which is fitting since he's rather fond of Fawkes, the phoenix he keeps in his office at Hogwarts.</p><h2><strong>Some of his accomplishments may have been over-glorified</strong></h2><p>After Dumbledore's death, the "Harry Potter" journalist Rita Skeeter published "The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore," in which she revealed many secrets about the great wizard.</p><p>The book's accuracy may be up for debate given Skeeter's history of spreading slanderous gossip, but it does appear that at least some of her criticisms could be true.</p><p>For example, in one part of the book, Skeeter accuses Dumbledore of lying about having single-handedly discovered the 12 uses for dragon's blood. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series is learning about her magical universe. Every new book introduces new magical concepts she invents. In "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," it's the basilisk and Chamber of Secrets. In "Prisoner of Azkaban," it's dementors, time turners, and patronuses. And so on.</p><p>In "<a href="http://www.thisisinsider.com/fantastic-beasts-and-where-to-find-them-is-it-good-2016-11">Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,</a>" Rowling's new "Harry Potter" movie spin-off series, the author continues that tradition. The big new magical concept she introduces is the Obscurus.</p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">An Obscurus is a type of magical parasite that forms when a wizard or witch suppresses their magical ability. If they don't perform spells, it's as if their magic turns inwards and eats at them.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Obscuruses eventually take over their host bodies. The parasite itself is called an </span><em><span style="font-weight: 400;">Obscurus</span></em><span style="font-weight: 400;">, and the person whose body is used as a host is an </span><em><span style="font-weight: 400;">Obscurial</span></em><span style="font-weight: 400;">. If they're not controlled, an Obscurial can be extremely dangerous.</span></p><p>An Obscurus looks like an ash-colored, tendril-equipped cloud. When an Obscurial loses control, they take a similar form. You can also sometimes catch a glimpse of a face inside them.</p><h3>In "Fantastic Beasts," we learn that Scamander captured an Obscurus.</h3><p>The first Obscurus we see onscreen is in the custody of Newt Scamander, the main character of the "Fantastic Beasts" series. Jacob Kowalski, a No-Maj (an American-English term a non-magical person) who Scamander befriends, is hanging out in Scamander's briefcase.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Jaap Buitendijk/Warner Bros.</span></p><p class="caption">Percival Graves enlists Credence Barebone to help him find an Obscurial. Little did he know...</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The briefcase is magically expanded into an enormous space inside, and it looks something like a cross between a movie studio and a zoo. It's divided into different sections, each one a different habitat for Scamander's animals. One of these sections is a blisteringly cold, snowy landscape.</p><p>Inside is an Obscurus floating in a transparent bubble. It looks like it's about two or three feet in diameter.</p><p>Kowalski appears entranced by it, but Scamander warns him to step back. Scamander says he captured the Obscurus in Sudan three months earlier. It apparently killed a girl or woman - "He was eight when she died," Scamander said. Obscurials rarely live past the age of ten, and they were more common centuries earlier, when wizards and witches had to hide their powers from their No-Maj neighbors in fear of persecution.</p><h3>An Obscurial kills a No-Maj, threatening the secret magical community.</h3><p>As in the "Harry Potter" series, the magical community in "Fantastic Beasts" - which is set in 1926 New York - is hidden from the non-magical community. MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America) is <a href="http://www.thisisinsider.com/jk-rowling-america-wizards-2016-10">even more secretive than the Ministry of Magic at the time, forbidding contact between No-Majs and magical folk</a>.</p><p>From the start of the film, MACUSA is on high alert. A mysterious magical force <span>- some suspect it's a beast, some suspect it has something to do with <a href="http://www.thisisinsider.com/fantastic-beasts-who-is-grindelwald-2016-11">Grindelwald</a></span> <span>- is ripping up New York City and then disappearing. </span>Percival Graves, MACUSA's head auror (magical law enforcement officer), is on the case. By it's description, it seems to be an Obscurial.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Warner Bros.</span></p><p class="caption">An Obscurial attacking New York City.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Later, an Obscurial - possibly the same one - breaks into a dinner in honor of Henry Shaw, Jr., a New York Senator. While Shaw is giving a speech in front of an audience of fat cats, it lifts him up in the air and kills him.</p><p>Scamander analyzes Shaw's body and recognizes by the marks on his face that he was killed by an Obscurial. Before Scamander found one in Sudan, one hadn't been sighted in 200 years.</p><p>The No-Majs, meanwhile, suspect that something is out of the ordinary. Some begin to entertain the previously fringe theory that there's magic in the world. The secret world of wizards is at risk of becoming known to the public.</p><h3>Credence Barebone turns out to be an Obscurial.</h3><p>Graves enlists Credence Barebone to help him find an Obscurial. Credence is an orphan who, along with his sister Chastity, is adopted by an abusive No-Maj anti-magic activist, Mary Lou. Graves had a "vision" that the Obscurus was a young girl, about ten years old. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Warner Bros.</span></p><p class="caption">Obscurials can ooze down walls. Here it is in the City Hall subway station.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p> </p><p>It's thought that one of his younger sisters Chastity or Modesty may be the Obscurial throughout the movie; however, it turns out Credence was an Obscurial all along. He's more powerful than the usual one, because he's a teenager, much older than the usual Obscurial host body. </p><p>What we don't find out is whether or not one of Credence's sisters may also be Obscurials. Chastity had a fake wand which she may or may not have been trying to practice magic with. We know she's Credence's biological sister, so she has magical lineage.</p><p>And what about Modesty? She's identified as having magical powers, and she and Credence call each other brother and sister even though they're not related by blood. Why? And why did Graves think she would have magical powers, anyway, if they're not related by blood?</p><p>Whether Modesty or Chastity are <em>also</em> Obscurials, in addition to Credence, we don't know. We don't find out what happens to them. And so we're also not sure if it's Credence, or either of them, who are responsible for earlier Obscurial attacks on New York City.</p><h3>Grindelwald wanted an Obscurial to expose the magical community.</h3><p>At the end of the movie, we learn that Graves was <a href="http://www.thisisinsider.com/fantastic-beasts-who-is-grindelwald-2016-11">Gellert Grindelwald</a>, a powerful dark wizard, in disguise.</p><p>Grindelwald believes that the laws keeping No-Majs and magical folk apart benefits No-Majs at the expense of magical people. He wanted to find an Obscurial and unleash it on the world. Doing that could have started a war between magicians and No-Majs, through which Grindelwald could win and impose a magical ruling class over humankind.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Warner Bros.</span></p><p class="caption">Obscurials are dangerous.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>In the end of the movie, though Credence, in Obscurial form, is defeated, a wisp of him escapes, presumably due to return in future movies. Could Grindelwald find a way to break free from MACUSA to continue his Obscurial hunt? </p><h3><strong>Obscurials and the connection between "Fantastic Beasts" and the "Harry Potter" series</strong></h3><p>The concept of an Obscurial can help explain a fuzzy moment in the "Harry Potter" series.</p><p>The death of Ariana Dumbledore, Albus Dumbledore's younger sister, tore apart Dumbledore's and Grindelwald's friendship. But it's not totally clear how it happened.</p><p>We know that Ariana died when she was 14. She was known to be sick. She never attended Hogwarts or went to St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries. Instead, her brothers Albus and Aberforth cared for her. Muriel Weasley speculates in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" that she was a squib and that she was responsible for the death of her mother, Kendra Dumbledore.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Warner Brothers</span></p><p class="caption">A portrait of Ariana Dumbledore from "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2."</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Later in the book, Aberforth Dumbledore, Ariana and Albus's brother, gives a clear assessment of her life. When Ariana was six years old, she was attacked by Muggle boys. </p><p>That sounds... exactly like an Obscurial! An Obscurial is a magical person who doesn't perform magic. It makes a person strange and dangerous at uncontrollable times, with magic exploding out of you. And it's definitely a threat to the <span>International Statute of Secrecy.<br /><br />To keep Ariana safe and quiet, the family moved to quiet Godric's Hollow. When she was fourteen, "she had one of her rages" and killed her mother. Aberforth regrets he couldn't be there to calm her down. And in "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them," Scamander and Tina Goldstein try to calm down Credence Barebone as a way to help him control the Obscurus taking over.</span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Warner Bros. Graves, too, thought Credence was a squib.</p><p>In a three-way duel between Grindelwald, Albus, and Aberforth, Ariana tried to intervene to stop it, but she was accidentally killed.</p><p>The whole affair explains why Grindelwald would be looking for an Obscurial, or how he knows how to recognize one. During "Fantastic Beasts," one wizard remarks that they haven't been seen in centuries. Well, maybe Grindelwald saw one and knew what to look for.</p><p>Unleashing an Obscurial would be, in the words of Aberforth, "a serious threat to the International Statute of Secrecy" - which is exactly what Grindelwald is looking to do. A new, dark magic introduced in 'Fantastic Beasts' may explain one of the biggest mysteries in 'Harry Potter'

Rowling's magical world of wizards, goblins, and otherworldly creatures in 1926 New York City. It also reintroduces one of the series' big villains.</p><p>We're not talking about Voldemort.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Warner Bros.</span></p><p class="caption">Say hello to Grindelwald.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Near the end of the movie, Rowling, who wrote the script, reveals Johnny Depp is Gellert Grindelwald, a dark wizard who's been hiding in plain sight throughout the film. Grindelwald's plotting to start a war between wizards and No-Majs (the American term for non-magical beings).</p><p>And though Grindelwald eventually gets locked up by the end of "Fantastic Beasts," don't plan on him staying that way forever. He's shaping up to be the main antagonist in the <a href="http://www.thisisinsider.com/jk-rowling-5-fantastic-beasts-movies-2016-10">four planned sequels</a>.</p><p>While Depp's appearance as a bleach blonde magician may look foreign, the name Grindelwald should sound familiar to fans. Here's everything you should know about the dark wizard.</p><h3>Grindelwald played a major part in the 'Harry Potter' series.</h3><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Warner Bros.</span></p><p class="caption">Gellert Grindelwald in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1."</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>In the "Harry Potter" series, which takes place decades after "Fantastic Beasts," Grindelwald plays a big role and helped shape the course of world events in the 20th century. He was Albus Dumbledore's closest friend before turning into a Hitler-like figure who threw the magical world into turmoil in an attempt to dominate non-magical folk.</p><p>Grindelwald's first mention in the "Potter" series is inconspicuous. He's simply a name dropped on Albus Dumbledore's chocolate frog card in "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone": "Dumbledore is particularly famous for his defeat of the Dark wizard Grindelwald in 1945."</p><p>It's not until several books later in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" that he plays a bigger role. As Voldemort searches for The Elder Wand, which he believes will make him invincible, he traces its path to Grindelwald. Voldemort finds Grindelwald in Nurmengard, a prison Grindelwald built during his rise to power and was locked in after his fall. But he finds out that Grindelwald doesn't have the wand anymore, and kills him. (It turns out that Dumbledore obtained the wand after defeating Grindelwald in 1945.)</p><p>Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger learn about Grindelwald by accident.</p><p>At Bill and Fleur's wedding in "Deathly Hallows," Xenophilius Lovegood wears a necklace with the Deathly Hallows symbol on it. Viktor Krum, one of the wedding guests, instantly recognizes it as Grindelwald's sign and is upset. Krum attended Durmstrang, the Scandanavian magical school which Grindelwald attended. Grindelwald carved the symbol into a wall at Durmstrang when he was there, and it inspired - or horrified - some later pupils. Krum's grandfather, for his part, was killed by Grindelwald.</p><p>Later, Harry and the crew find out Grindelwald's sign is that of the Deathly Hallows - a trio of objects consisting of the Elder Wand, the Ressurection Stone, and the Cloak of Invisibility. If a wizard or witch were to possess all three Hallows, they were said to be the Master of Death. </p><h3><strong>Grindelwald used to be best friends with Dumbledore.</strong></h3><p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Warner Bros. Pictures</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></strong></p><p>Grindelwald was expelled from Durmstrang when he was 16 for "twisted experiments," according to the tabloid wizard journalist Rita Skeeter. After his expulsion in the late 19th century, he went to live with his great-aunt, the wizarding historian Bathilda Bagshot, in Godric's Hollow in England. (It's also the place where the Potters lived, decades later.)  </p><p>Bagshot happened to be neighbors with the Dumbledore family. Albus Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald - both ambitious, talented, and idealistic teenage wizards - quickly became friends.</p><p>The two also expressed interest in the Hallows, but both teens had different reasons for seeking them out: Grindelwald wanted power, while Dumbledore thought the Ressurection Stone might bring back his dead parents.</p><p>Since Rowling announced that Dumbledore was gay, many have speculated that their mutual interest was also romantic.</p><h3><strong>The two planned a revolution.</strong></h3><p>"You cannot imagine how his ideas caught me, Harry, inflamed me," Dumbledore's portrait told Harry at the end of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." "Muggles forced into subservience. We wizards triumphant. Grindelwald and I, the glorious young leaders of the revolution."</p><p>According to Skeeter, who also wrote a not-entirely-accurate biography of Dumbledore shortly after his death, Dumbledore and Grindelwald planned to overturn the Statue of Secrecy, which keeps magical folk secret from non-magical folk, and establish a wizarding ruling class over Muggles.</p><p>They had different reasons. For Grindelwald, it was because he was an evil dude. Aberforth, Albus's brother, confronted him, saying he needed to take care of their sister Ariana. Grindelwald, enraged, attacked Aberforth, and Albus defended him. In the three-way duel, Ariana was killed.</p><p>After that, Dumbledore stayed home to take care of his brother. Meanwhile, Grindelwald fled from the duel and went on to find at least one of the Hallows on his own.</p><h3><strong>Dumbledore defeated Grindelwald in a legendary duel.</strong></h3><p>Grindelwald stole one of the Hallows, the Elder Wand, from the Eastern European wandmaker Mykew Gegorovitch.</p><p>From here, he dabbled more in the dark arts and rose to power. The details of his rise aren't clear, but we do know that he killed a lot of people (like Viktor Krum's grandfather) and established a prison, Nurmengard, for his enemies. He thought it was impregnable.</p><p>As Grindelwald became more infamous, Dumbledore faced him down. Voldemort might also be the more powerful wizard. Pictures</span></p><p class="caption">Grindelwald, secretly disguised as Graves.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Let's get some of the timeline straight.</p><p>"Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" takes place in New York City in 1926. Dumbledore and Grindelwald's whirlwind summer at Godric's Hollow took place around 1899. And we know Dumbledore defeated Grindelwald in a duel in 1945.</p><p>So by the time "Fantastic Beasts" takes place, Grindelwald is in his 40s and his regime is on the rise. But he never became a significant part of British magical history, so his activities must have been mostly confined to Eastern and Central Europe.</p><p>At the end of "Fantastic Beasts," Percival Graves - the head auror at MACUSA and seemingly the second-most-powerful person in the American wizarding community - turns out to be Grindelwald in disguise.</p><p>Throughout the film, Graves enlists Credence Barebone, an orphan who appears to be a No-Maj, into helping him find an Obscurial. An Obscurial is a hard-to-control magical force that's unleashed when a wizard or witch doesn't express their magical powers.</p><p>There's a big showdown between Graves, Newt Scamander (the movie's main protagonist), and Barebone. Graves is brought to his knees, and Scamander performs a "revelio" charm to reveal him as Grindelwald.</p><p>Grindelwald is taken away. And while American wizards, unlike British ones, use the death penalty, Grindelwald makes it to future installments of the series. It's not clear yet how he'll make it out. Perhaps he has a few allies in MACUSA.</p><h3><strong>What will Grindelwald's role be in future "Fantastic Beasts" movies? </strong> </h3><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://pictures.reuters.com/C.aspx?VP3=SearchResult&amp;ALID=2C0408TVUFWLR&amp;PBC=:2C0408TVUFWLR">Reuters/Chinese Stringer Network</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>David Yates, who's directing the "Fantastic Beasts" movies and who directed the final four "Harry Potter" ones, told my colleague Jason Guerrasio at Business <keyword id="79969" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="insider">Insider</keyword> <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/fantastic-beasts-johnny-depp-role-2016-11">Grindelwald is going to be a major part of the next movie</a>.</p><p>"Grindelwald is a major character and it's pretty big shoes to fill," Heyman said. "So you want someone who is charismatic, who is brave as an actor, who can stand up and is iconic. Johnny [Depp] is one of the few actors who has created several iconic characters and he's brave, he's a great artist, he's a great actor. So we went to Johnny and he said yes."</p><p>Heyman also confirmed <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/fantastic-beats-dumbledore-in-sequel-2016-11">that Dumbledore will be in the sequel</a>. Casting is currently underway.</p><p>The next "Fantastic Beasts" movie is rumored to <a href="http://heroichollywood.com/fantastic-beasts-sequel-reportedly-set-1928-paris/">take place in Paris</a>. Rowling herself said the series' five movies <a href="https://twitter.com/Variety/status/796862988636418048">will span "19 years,"</a> meaning it will end in 1945, the same year Dumbledore dueled Grindelwald.</p><p>So the rest of the "Fantastic Beasts" movies will take place just as Grindelwald is rising to power, and possibly in Europe, and may end in a Dumbledore-Grindelwald showdown.</p><p>There's a lot of rich material to be explored in the next four (or possibly more, when it's all said and done) "Fantastic Beasts" movies.
