The first pre-induction night launch of new generation <keyword id="42458" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ballistic-missile" source="Orion">ballistic missile</keyword>, <keyword id="12762316" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Agni-Prime" source="Orion">Agni Prime</keyword>, was successfully flight-tested by Defence Research and Development Organisation (<keyword id="6355142" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="drdo" source="Orion">DRDO</keyword>) from Dr APJ <keyword id="3038338" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="abdul-kalam-island" source="Orion">Abdul Kalam Island</keyword> off the coast of <keyword id="6357961" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="odisha" source="Orion">Odisha</keyword> on Wednesday at around 7:30 pm, a DRDO statement said on Thursday. As per the official statement, during the flight test, all objectives were successfully demonstrated. This was the first pre-induction night launch conducted by the users after three successful developmental trials of the missile, validating the accuracy and reliability of the system. "First Pre Induction night launch of New Generation Ballistic Missile Agni Prime was successfully conducted off the coast of Odisha on 07 June 2023," tweeted DRDO. Range instrumentation like Radar, Telemetry and Electro-Optical Tracking Systems were deployed at different locations, including two down-range ships, at the terminal point to capture flight data covering the entire trajectory of the vehicle, the statement said. Senior officials from DRDO and Strategic Forces Command witnessed the successful flight test, which paved the way for the induction of the system into the Armed Forces. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO and the Armed Forces for the success as well as the copy-book performance of the New Generation Ballistic Missile Agni Prime. Secretary Department of Defence R&amp;D &amp; Chairman DRDO Dr Samir V Kamat appreciated the efforts put in by the teams of DRDO laboratories and the users involved in the test launch. 'Agni Prime' ballistic missile successfully flight-tested by DRDO off Odisha coast

<ul><li><keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> successfully tested its <keyword id="2216617" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Prithvi-Defence-Vehicle">Prithvi Defence Vehicle</keyword> (<keyword id="4163592" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="PDV">PDV</keyword>) last night which is a part of its two-layer Ballistic Missile Defence Program (BMD).</li><li>PDV, in particular, is a missle that engages targets 50 kms above the Earth’s atmosphere. </li><li>Earlier reports suggest that the PDV could potentially replace the existing combination of missiles.</li></ul>Tensions are at a precarious point where China, Russia, the United States, Japan and, of course, India are in an arms race to beef up their economic and military arsenals. India’s newest milestone is a <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/india-tests-interceptor-missile-that-can-engage-targets-above-atmosphere-1920981">successful test</a> of the the Prithvi Defence Vehicle (PDV) off the eastern coast of the country. This is a part of India's two-layer Ballistic Missile Defence Program (BMD). Originally <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/latest-headlines/story/drdo-readies-shield-against-chinese-icbms-41421-2009-03-09">announced</a> in 2009 as a defence requirement against China’s intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), the PDV engages targets in the Earth’s exo-atmosphere. Targets are usually at an altitude that’s nearly 50 km above the Earth’s atmosphere. India conducted its test at around 8PM on 23 September from <keyword id="3038338" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Abdul-Kalam-Island">Abdul Kalam Island</keyword> off the coast of the Odisha, a state on the eastern border of India. <div type="image" title="Mahogany Photo Simple Flowcharts(2)" msid="65933731" hostid="261"></div>

 India’s Ballistic Missile Defence Program The PDV and Prithvi Air Defence (PAD) work together to destroy missiles at exo-atmospheric altitudes, and the Ashivin Advanced Defence (AAD) is in place to intercept missiles within the atmosphere at heights of 20-40kms. So, the BMD system, as of now, can allegedly target medium range ballistic missiles that are travelling between the speeds of Mach 3 and Mach 8. When the PDV was originally tested in 2014, it missed its target though the launch was still considered a success by the DRDO scientists at that time. During the second test in 2017, reports claimed that the target was destroyed at 100kms. That being said, India is also <a href="https://thediplomat.com/2016/10/india-and-russia-ink-s-400-missile-air-defense-system-deal/">speculated</a> to have signed a deal for Russian-made S-400 Triumf advanced air defense systems, or SA-21 Growlers. The reports also suggest that the S-400’s in combination with the 40N6 <keyword id="839167" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="surface-to-air-missile">surface-to-air missile</keyword>, will be superior to what the PDV can accomplish. In a nuclear arms’ competition, BDM systems play a pivotal role in rendering the opposition obsolete. And, while we understand how the missile works, its true test would be in actual combat conditions. India’s BDM system puts it in an exclusive group with the United States, Russia, France, Israel and China. These are the only countries in the world with a developed missile defence system.

The missile was tracked throughout its whole trajectory and all the objectives were achieved, says a report in <a href="http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/india-successfully-test-fires-nuclear-capable-agni-5/article24071775.ece">The Hindu</a>. The missile costs around $8 million and can carry nuclear warheads weighing upto 1.5 tonnes to distances over 5000 km. If the payload is reduced, it can even reach distances of upto 8000 km. It is an advancement to the Agni-III and was first test fired in 2012. Since then, it has been tested five more times with the latest launches being conducted from road-mobile launching vehicles. The Agni-5 features new technologies, like the high accuracy Ring Laser Gyro based <keyword id="1666576" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Inertial-Navigation-System">Inertial Navigation System</keyword> (RINS) and a Micro Navigation System (MINS), which were both developed indigenously. What are anti-satellites weapons Anti-satellites are space weapons designed to incapacitate or destroy satellites for strategic military purposes. There are only four countries in the world with this capability — the US, China, Russia and now India. These weapons can allow a country to attack enemy satellite by blinding them or disrupting their communication. They also provide a technical base for intercepting ballistic missiles. They are also helpful in bringing down spy satellites. India can now hit satellites at long ranges with a few centimeters accuracy, said Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) chairman G Satheesh Reddy told news agency ANI. However, India has not directed the test against any country. The Ministry said the test was done in the lower atmosphere to ensure that there were no space debris. "Whatever debris that is generated will decay and fall back onto the earth within weeks." On why was the test done now, the statement said it was done after India had acquired the required degree of confidence to ensure its success and it reflected the intention of the government to enhance India's national security. India successfully test-fired nuclear-capable, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=agni+missile">Agni</a>-I ballistic missile from a test range off Odisha coast.

The sophisticated missile covered 700 km distance within 9 minutes and 36 seconds, they said. 
 
"The launch was undertaken as a part of periodic training activity by SFC to further consolidate operational readiness," the official said. 
 
Agni-I missile is equipped with sophisticated <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=navigation+system">navigation system</a> which ensures it reaches the target with a high degree of accuracy and precision. 
The missile, which has already been inducted into armed forces, has proved its excellent performance in terms of range, accuracy and lethality, the sources said.
