Arushi’s murder case that shocked the world has finally been closed. The judgement ran into 210 pages; it had to because solving the cold blooded murder mystery of the only daughter of doctor couple living in Noida wasn’t an easy one for the CBI. The case was also about another murder, supposedly, that happened in relation to the murder of the teen – <keyword id="18550" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aarushi">Aarushi</keyword>, was that of Hemraj. Domestic help Hemraj’s body was found on the terrace of the same building which housed the residence of Aarushi few days after she was found dead with her throat being slit. The case happened in 2008. 
 
In 2013, Judge Shyam Lal held Aarushi’s dentist parents <a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/indiarealtime/2013/11/27/judgment-in-full-aarushi-talwar-murder-case/">Rajesh and Nupur Talwar</a> guilty of both murders and handed over life sentence to them, thus wiping out the entire family in one go. Their only daughter Aarushi was gone, and her grieving parents landed in Dasna jail. The court, based on the reports submitted by CBI had taken into consideration the claims of the fact that Talwars had compromised with the murder scene and the crime must have been committed by them. Also, some of the ground facts include the ‘innocence’ claimed by parents to the fact that when Aarushi was being murdered in the room adjacent to theirs, they had not heard a single noise emerging from there. The court, though in not as many words, said the parents did this as a matter of honour killing since the teenager Aarushi and 45-year old <keyword id="519099" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hemraj-Banjade">Hemraj Banjade</keyword> were said to be having an ‘affair’. 
 Initially, <keyword id="6358992" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-Police">Delhi police</keyword> carried out an investigation and framed the Talwars. Eventually, when the outrage grew, the case was transferred to CBI and three other servants working with the Talwars were investigated. Krishna, Rajkumar and Vijay underwent narco tests. With all this, enough material was generated to have Talwars behind the bars, forever, even as their appeal remains pending in Allahabad Court. 
 
It is noteworthy that CBI had also suspected that the three servants had attempted to sexually assault Aarushi, and when that failed, they killed her and the prime witness Hemraj who was presumably in the know of things – in order to wipe the charges, if any, clean. But, subsequent to this, CBI handed over the investigation to the new team which arrived at the conclusion that the three men were innocent since it did not find any tangible evidence to back up its theory. Result – Rajesh and Nupur were given life term, for want of any evidence that would prove their innocence. 
 
Lack of evidence and victims being turned into perpetrators isn’t something strange in Indian methods of investigation. Such <a href="http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-33546471">botched up theories</a> may have landed thousands of undertrials languishing in jails for years. They get to live a lost life, in case they have the mettle to prove their innocence, resources to fight a case and win against government’s agencies. 
 
Aarushi, though died an unfortunate death in 2008, is making waves again. This is probably the first time in Indian history that a journalist who was closely following the case has written a book on the entire incident based on the facts he was able to collect in the line of his duty. 
<a href="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/home/sunday-times/deep-focus/Aarushi-judge-wrote-verdict-even-before-defence-finished-argument/articleshow/47941271.cms">Senior journalist Avirook Sen</a> has turned into an unlikely crusader in Aarushi’s case, arguing through his book ‘Aarushi’ that CBI clearly had got the case and method of investigation completely wrong. “Narco tests were for everyone to see. When three servants close to Talwars were administered the test, experts said there were way too many loopholes in their statements that could have been probed into. But, CBI chose to look the other way,” he said in an interview after releasing the book recently. 
 
Aarushi is an important book in the history of Indian judiciary and the work style of highest of the order investigation agencies that can frame innocent people, sometimes deliberately, and sometimes for want of other evidences that can directly point at the killer. 
 
Some interesting tidbits that make Indian judiciary, some sort of a machinery that lacks some important functional parts can be a very telling statement. The book which runs into three parts—the investigation, the trail and Dasna diaries, speaks of the ordeal Talwars are going through. 
 
Going by the response the book has generated, it may also play a crucial role in bringing about the most important part—the conclusion, which for now, is hazy and clouded in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Worms-Still-Wriggling-Out-Of-Sunanda-Pushkar-Death-Case/articleshow/45991024.cms">mystery and tragedy</a>. If that happens, Aarushi will truly rest in peace.

For Indians, who are always hungry for some bloody drama, the high profile murders make for a delectable watch. Hence, it was little surprising when the recent <keyword id="3021112" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sheena-Bora-murder-case">Sheena Bora murder case</keyword>, which is still developing, was called a ‘prime time murder’ for a reason. 
 
Crimes are what the audience trip on. We know that too well by now. It redeems the collective notion of Indians in karma theory they believe innately in. What goes around definitely comes around as well. And, when a rich man or woman commits a crime, they surreptitiously evoke the feelings of not-so-rich Indian middle class that watches the elite with a bit of suspicion and jealousy. 
 The case of Sheena Bora, the famed sister (allegedly daughter) of <keyword id="1210108" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indrani-Mukerjea">Indrani Mukerjea</keyword>, who shot to fame years after her death, is a classic example of how India’s thirst is ravaging for sensational murders. 
 
After all, aren’t we the same country that fuels our imagination with prime time soap operas that are conniving, filled with crime, and also have a fair share of those who stand by and suffer silently till someone rescues them. Our concept of god, as the saviour is pretty much the same. 
 
Sheena’s story is still developing, in which a shocking dimension is getting added every day. The 24X7 coverage the news report is getting, doesn’t seem enough because the list of people involved is getting bigger by the day. The puzzle is so confusing that it is almost an unsolvable maze now. 
 
Some of the high profile cases that have shook India have had an interesting mix of elite and middle class with the latter feeling helpless. In case of Jessica Lal, the case was a clear one. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=aarushi">Aarushi Talwar’s case</a> was also something that media rode on for a long time. There was sex, gore and double murders in the upscale house of affluent dentist couple. In the absence of everything else, the parents were finally declared the murderers and put behind bars. They continue to languish there, while trying to work up a weak battle once a while. But, the battle has now shifted from middle class to the system that implicates them. The system is so corroded that it has almost become unreachable and inaccessible for the end users. 
 
With Sheena, the case has gotten a lot murkier than all other. This is almost such a tragedy that even Greek tragedies that were written by greatest playwrights fall short of the dramatic equations this has created. 
 Never before did social media use a crime for comic relief. Today, when you open Facebook or Twitter, you only see the images of 24-year-old innocent Sheena, who was looking forward to a life with her technical stepbrother who was her lover, and a social climber in Indrani who seemed to have exploited her gender and looks to the last benefit, and a hapless <keyword id="6360333" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Peter-Mukerjea">Peter Mukerjea</keyword> who claimed he didn’t know Sheena was Indrani’s daughter. 
 
Wow! That was SOMETHING! Now, is this the same man who turned the fortune for Star Group in India? People, remember those days when Amitabh Bachchan resonated with his baritone voice on Kaun Banega Crorepati, a show that gave a fresh lease of life for both the actor and the channel! 
 
Star till then was pretty much a western channel that was yet to mature with Indian content. Peter changed the fortune with a bouquet of programmes. At a time when Star was at its best, it had top 44 shows on the list of a 100 most popular shows in India. This was the calibre of the man, who is now stuck in a marriage and a murder that does not seem to be easy to solve. 
 
Indrani is a challenge to India’s social conscience. A small town girl from Guwahati, who was called Pori in her childhood turned out to be the best social climber ever. There are hardly any journalists and media persons who have NOT tweeted or written about this crime after she was picked up by Mumbai police for interrogation two weeks ago. 
 
Since then, the crime has remained the same with dimensions getting wider and wider. Indrani not only managed to rope in her former husband from whom she had another daughter whom she publicly acknowledges, but mercilessly played a role in ending the life of her own daughter from an alleged live-in relationship that didn’t turn into a marriage. A son from the same relationship escaped the jaws of death because of his presence of mind. 
 
This is some crime that will rankle the ears of India for a long time to come.

Sheena Bora murder case and other bloody trail of India’s high and mighty

The high-profile case surrounding <keyword id="138503" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sunanda-Pushkar">Sunanda Pushkar</keyword>’s death has not been laid to rest yet. Recently, former union minister and Kerala MP <keyword id="42749" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shashi-Tharoor">Shashi Tharoor</keyword> was grilled by investigating agency officials in connection with the case. What had been more intriguing is the BJP MP <keyword id="6370187" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Subramanian-Swamy">Subramanian Swamy</keyword>’s statements that Shashi probably knows Sunanda’s killers. 
 
This not only gave a new twist to the case, but also left Shashi Tharoor in a quandary over his wife’s death. He recently spoke to the media in Kerala during his visit, and said he was not even allowed to mourn his wife’s death ever since it happened last year. 
 
How did a ‘sudden’ death of Sunanda Pushkar turn into a case riddled with suspicion? Was it the money aspect that surrounded her contacts with high and mighty of the political circles? When did a spat between husband and wife, over another woman (Pakistani journalist Mehr Tarar) turn into something deeper than what was visible on the surface? After all, Sunanda had vowed to ‘finish’ Shashi off by laying bare some aspects of his life including that of his involvement in IPL. His personal life, she had anyway exposed through her tweets from his handle, pertaining to the particular affinity he had shown towards Tarar. 
 
Sunanda was a familiar face in the social and political circles of Lutyen’s Delhi. Subramanian Swamy, who is probably playing the Sherlock Holmes in this case, recently issued another statement saying Sunanda ‘met somebody’ in Lutyen’s area. While these snippets shroud the mystery aspect around her death, there isn’t a particular direction to any of these. 
 
What was earlier deemed to be a case of mistakenly mixing drugs, and perhaps alcohol, has now turned into a case of murder that isn’t concluded yet. Her viscera samples are still being tested abroad, a year after she was laid to rest. If it wasn’t the drugs clashing with each other and eventually killing her, was she injected with poisonous substance? It is said that there were a dozen injury marks on her body that weren’t reasoned. The police are still at a loss to explain this aspect surrounding her death. 
 The last call she made was to her son <keyword id="2020656" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shiv-Menon">Shiv Menon</keyword>. He has also been questioned to know what the conversation was about, and if there was a whiff of anything that seemed like she would commit suicide in a matter of few minutes. Shiv Menon has given his statement to the agencies, and this hasn’t clearly led anywhere. Police have been questioning everyone who was in contact with her two days prior to her death. 
 
One of Shashi’s domestic helps mentioned of a mysterious ‘KT’ who was the point of argument in their conversations. However, a writer who identified herself as ‘Katie’ issued a statement on the Internet stating it was coincidental that everyone was assuming it to be her since she had evinced interest in chronicling Shashi’s life. 
 
Was it Lupus that killed her? Again, not willing to stay off the case, Subramanian Swamy has demanded the medical reports from Shashi Tharoor who had earlier said Sunanda had Lupus and that she could have had some trouble even because of that. 
 
With all these aspects that are clashing with each other in the cyberspace, will Sunanda remain a mystery woman who burst like a star and met her end owing to her ambitions of leading a luxurious life? Will India ever know how and why she died? Or will investigating agencies write off a mysterious end to the inconclusive case as they did in terms of Aarushi Talwar? Truly, the nation wants to know!
