A lot of companies also seek to benefit from the low levels of consumer awareness and knowledge in terms of ingredient quality and their sourcing. Another reason is that many low quality or unhealthy ingredients don’t affect the body immediately but turn harmful to the body over a period of time. For eg., certain artificial sweeteners that are used in certain foods can be harmful to the body if consumed for a long period of time. So consumers sometimes oversee these factors or think it might not cause enough harm. Hence companies continue to use such unhealthy ingredients in their products. The guidelines for clean labelling is still in its nascent stage in India which has further made it easier for companies to take undue advantage of the same. By raising the benchmarks for purity in India, we hope to bring about a change in the way ‘clean nutrition’ is perceived in the country.” To improve the state of the nutrition industry further, Gill said that consumers should be encouraged to ask the right questions around the food label, ingredients -- leaving brands with no choice but to step up. “We also need to raise the benchmark of quality. FSSAI or Ayush license is just the first step for any food and nutrition brand. It’s important to analyse various quality parameters such as heavy metals, toxicity etc to ensure the products meet the global standards of purity. We need to also invest in upgrading the testing machines. When we were going for Clean Label certification, we realized many parameters in India are tested on parts per million whereas the global standard is testing on parts per billion. We had to send our test samples to Germany and the US to ensure our products meet the testing standards defined on a global level. If we are able to take the necessary steps in the above direction, our future generations will be eating far more cleaner products than we are,” said Gill. There's a lack of awareness and understanding in India when it comes to getting the right nutrition from food, especially among women. According to the National Family Health Survey 2019-20, in most states and union territories of India, more than half the children and women are anemic. However, after COVID, people are becoming more conscious as they are considering their daily lifestyle and taking a more holistic approach by purchasing items that might help strengthen the immune system naturally. Muthoot Finance and Manappuram Finance The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) imposed penalties of ₹10 lakh and ₹5 lakh on Muthoot Finance and Manappuram Finance respectively for norm violations. The central bank has penalised Muthoot Finance for non-compliance with directions issued by RBI on maintenance of loan-to-value ratio in gold loans and on obtaining a copy of PAN card of the borrower while granting gold loans in excess of ₹5 lakh, contravening RBI norms. <ul><li>The <keyword id="8706677" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="old-tax-regime" source="Orion">old tax regime</keyword> offers tax benefits and the <keyword id="548629" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-tax-regime" source="Orion">new tax regime</keyword> offers a lower tax rate with almost no tax deductions.</li><li>Availability of no tax deduction made the new tax regime unattractive.</li><li>Here are what experts are suggesting to make the new tax regime more appealing.</li></ul>In last year’s union budget, India’s finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman had announced a new tax regime with low income-tax rates for individuals. But it was suitable for those who were willing to forgo deductions and exemptions. The new tax regime does not allow 70 tax exemptions and deductions including house rent, leave travel allowance, children’s education allowance, benefits from section 80C (allows tax deduction up to ₹1.5 lakh from investments made), 80D (allows tax deduction from insurance) and home loan interest deduction. <a href="https://www.cnbctv18.com/finance/centres-new-tax-regime-has-few-takers-report-12074302.htm">Reportedly</a>, only 10% of the taxpayers who filed returns through ClearTax (now Clear) portal have opted for the new regime. Industry watchers also observed that there are less takers for the new tax regime as taxpayers stuck to the old one with several tax deductions. Under income tax deductions, a taxpayer can reduce their overall taxable income and tax exemptions help exclude a specific amount of taxable income. As notified by the income tax department, one needs to file the income tax returns using the additional form i.e., Form 10-IE, for selecting a new tax regime. “We still see a majority of the people sticking to the old tax regime. There are two reasons for that -- it was only feasible for two kinds of people; one is either you are in a really lower income group, where you don't have liquidity to invest in some of the schemes that section 80C gives you like PPF [public provident fund], or insurance. So for them the new scheme makes sense. Secondly, if the overall benefits were higher than ₹75,000, there actually the new tax regime does not make sense,” said Aarti Desikan, executive director, private wealth management at Anand Rathi Securities. Under the new tax regime, the maximum tax benefit one can get is ₹75,000 in a year.
