Jones' father, Alvin Jones Sr., died earlier this year at the age of 56 from complications with COVID-19.</p><p>Jones scored four touchdowns against the Lions, but <a href="https://www.insider.com/green-bay-packers-aaron-jones-loses-pendant-holding-dads-ashes-2021-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the necklace that held the pendant fell off during one of his trips to the end zone</a>.</p><p>"He'd be happy. He'd be like, 'If you lose it anywhere, lose it in the end zone,'" Jones said in a postgame interview.</p><p>After a late-night search, the pendant was <a href="https://www.insider.com/aaron-jones-lost-necklace-ashes-found-trainer-search-2021-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">eventually found by Packers trainer Bryan "Flea" Engel</a> at nearly 2 a.m.</p><p>With the medallion secured, the Packers went about thinking of ways to help Jones ensure that he wouldn't lose it again. This year, Rodgers is battling a knee injury, but there are fewer excuses when perhaps the league's best quarterback is still playing.</p><p>Instead, the Packers have been plagued by several close losses and maddening mistakes. The loss to the Seahawks, who kept their playoff hopes alive by moving to 5-5, encapsulated some of the issues the Packers have had closing out games.</p><p>First, on Thursday, there was the decision not to challenge a "catch" made by Seahawks receiver Tyler Lockett with 6:41 left in the game. Replays showed Lockett bobbled the ball as he went to the ground, and f<span>ormer NFL head of officiating and FOX analyst Mike Pereira&#xa0;said he thought it would be over-turned if reviewed.</span></p><p>The Packers, however, did not challenge, perhaps because they only had one timeout remaining, because they burned two with substitution issues earlier in the half.</p><p>The Seahawks would go on to score what turned out to be the game-winning touchdown three plays later.</p><p>On the ensuing drive, the Packers gained just eight yards on three plays and were facing 4th-and-2 from their 33-yard line, with 4:20 left to play. They elected to punt. Even the Seahawks were happy with the prospects of getting the ball out of Rodgers' hands for a game-winning drive.</p><p><span>"Oh my God," Seahawks defensive coordinator Ken Norton Jr. <a href="http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000988682/article/packers-latest-collapse-to-seahawks-might-mark-end-of-an-era">told NFL Network's Mike Silver</a> after the game. "I was like, 'Please! Punt! Punt! Punt!'"</span></p><p>After the game, Packers coach Mike McCarthy said they considered going for it, but thought with a timeout and two-minute warning approaching, their defense could hold up. Trailing by two with just over two minutes remaining, running back Ty Montgomery was back to return a punt. The Patriots scored to make the game 24-17, and momentum permanently shifted. Rodgers and the Packers did get two more stabs at scoring but were unable to convert. They lost, 33-17.</span></p><h2><span>Will the Packers be in the market for a new kicker?</span></h2><p><span>It hasn't been the finest season for Mason Crosby. The 34-year-old kicker has seen his field goal accuracy drop from 78.9% to 76.9% and has already missed two extra-point attempts this season, the same amount he missed in 16 games last year.</span></p><p><span>Crosby had a disastrous week against the Lions in Week 5, missing four of five field goals and an extra-point attempt. The Packers lost by eight.</span></p><p><span>On Thursday, Crosby also missed a field goal in the first quarter. They've only just recently established a run game through second-year running back Aaron Jones, who Rodgers stumped for earlier in the season. Rodgers has lamented a lack of chemistry with some of his receivers, including rookies Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Equanimeous St. Brown. Tight end Jimmy Graham is now injured, but his connection with Rodgers hasn't been seamless in their first year together.</span></p><p><span>Rodgers himself hasn't been perfect either. It's the first year Rodgers' passer rating isn't over 100, and his completion percentage stands at just 61.8% The problem is, the Packers simply aren't a great team unless Rodgers is close to perfect.</span></p><p><span>The Packers might have to win out to have a shot at the playoffs. <ul class="summary-list"><li>The <keyword id="251078" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Green-Bay-Packers">Green Bay Packers</keyword> decided not to make any trades before the <keyword id="103436" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="NFL">NFL</keyword> trade deadline on Tuesday.</li><li>The Packers were rumored to be interested in Houston Texans receiver Will Fuller, but ultimately balked at the price.</li><li>The Packers have a conservative team-building philosophy, choosing to draft and develop players instead of paying high prices in trades or free agency.</li><li>The Packers are good, but have not been successful in recent drafts, and both their offense and defense could have used reinforcements.</li><li>Some in the NFL world feel the Packers' Super Bowl window is tight, and they missed a chance to go all-in this season.</li></ul><p>The Green Bay Packers stood pat at the trade deadline, opting not to make any moves to bolster a 5-2 roster.</p><p>The Packers were rumored to be involved in trade negotiations, namely with Houston Texans wide receiver Will Fuller, a speedy, deep threat with 490 receiving yards and 5 touchdowns on the year.</p><p>However, the Packers and Texans couldn't work out a deal at the deadline. <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/30251666/nfl-trade-deadline-winners-losers-avery-williamson-lands-contender-no-receiver-help-aaron-rodgers">ESPN's Dan Graziano reported</a> that the Packers didn't want to pay the price for Fuller — likely a first- or second-round draft pick — who can become a free agent at the end of the season.</p><p>As Graziano wrote after the deadline, the Packers "draft and develop" instead of paying high prices for talent.</p><p>"They draft and develop. They don't usually spend big money to sign guys, and they very rarely spend valuable draft picks to acquire guys in trades. They also make the playoffs almost every year. Packers gonna Packer."</p><h2>The Packers' conservative approach has left them short on talent</h2><p>The Packers' "draft and develop" method has worked in many cases. As Graziano noted, star receiver Davante Adams was a second-round pick. Undrafted receiver Allen Lazard was on his way to breakout season before undergoing surgery on a core muscle; he's expected back soon.</p><div type="image" title="will fuller" height="900" width="1200" msid="79051591" hostid="261"></div>The problem is the Packers haven't drafted or developed much offensive talent in recent years. <p>Wide receivers Marques Valdez-Scantling and Equanimeous St. Brown — drafted in the fifth- and sixth- rounds, respectively, in 2018 — have combined for 40 catches, 273 yards, and 1 touchdown this year.</p><p>Tight end Jace Sternberger and running back Dexter Williams, taken in the third- and sixth-rounds of the 2019 draft, have combined for a total of 96 yards from scrimmage in their careers.</p><p>The 2020 draft stands out the most. Of course, the Packers <a href="https://www.insider.com/packers-draft-jordan-love-aaron-rodgers-2020-4">traded up to draft quarterback Jordan Love</a>, likely to be <keyword id="1752538" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Aaron-Rodgers">Aaron Rodgers</keyword>' eventual successor. Love hasn't played and isn't on track to play. Many, including Rodgers, thought the Packers would use their first-round pick to draft any of the talented wide receivers available in the first round. (Trading up also went against their team-building ethos).</p><p>They also drafted running back A.J. Dillon in the second round, who has just 97 yards on 23 carries this season. Tight end Josiah Deguara, selected in the third round, has one catch for 12 yards this season.</p><p>At the moment, the Packers are highly reliant on Adams and running back Aaron Jones, star offensive players who have been injured this year. They've had fewer defensive takeaways than all but two other teams.</p><p>In Week 8, they lost to the Minnesota Vikings, 28-22, in a game in which Vikings running back Dalvin Cook accumulated 226 yards from scrimmage and 4 touchdowns, routinely breaking tackles.</p><p>After the loss, former NFL cornerback Ryan Clark, former NFL quarterback Dean Orlovsky, and former head coach Rex Ryan all ripped the Packers' defense on <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yeF59-PcPA">ESPN's "Get Up</a>," calling for them to acquire help.</p><p>"If they don't fix this defense, they do not have a chance to win," Clark said. "They do not have a chance to advance in the playoffs because they will play teams that will watch [the Week 8] film and understand that this is a recurring horror film ... This team is soft defensively, and they have to fix it now."</p><p>Orlovsky called for the Packers to make two trades ahead of the deadline.</p><p>"I need a two-piece nugget. I don't just need a receiver; you need to go get me a linebacker, too," Orlovsky said. "Their linebackers are terrible in Green Bay." </p><p>The irony is the Packers actually went against their usual ways during the 2019 offseason and spent big money on linebackers. They signed Za'Darius Smith to a $66 million contract and Preston Smith to a $52 million contract. After strong 2019 seasons, both have taken a step back in 2020.</p><h2>Will the Packers blow their window?</h2><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dd4rlZPqR-c">Graziano said on "Get Up"</a> that the Packers felt the price for Fuller sacrificed their "big-picture view."</p><p>It's fair to question that view. Rodgers is having an MVP-level season, but he is 36 years old, and quarterbacks can decline without much warning. The decision to draft Love suggested the Packers feel the change at quarterback will happen soon — it seems unlikely that they would have Love sit for more than two seasons, at most.</p><p>Furthermore, the Packers have several key players hitting free agency next season and likely won't be able to retain all of them. Their window might be this year.</p><p>The NFC looks open this year. Contenders like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New Orleans Saints, and Seattle Seahawks all have major questions on their rosters. Perhaps the open nature of the conference convinced the Packers that their roster is good enough to win now.</p><p>"You absolutely blew the draft. Don't blow the opportunity to trade for somebody that can put you in that Super Bowl-caliber type team," Ryan said on ESPN. "Because you're not far off." </p><p>It's worth wondering if the Packers missed a chance to take definitive control of the conference.</p>

But he apparently had other ideas.</p><p>Rodgers completed a series of passes to get into field-goal range, helped by a big run from running back Aaron Jones.</p><p>From there, with a touchdown possible and a field goal as a fall-back option, the Packers kept going. After a short run led to 3rd-and-8, the Packers called their last timeout with 29 seconds left.</p><p>Rodgers then came up with a huge 18-yard scramble to get the first down. Once in the red zone, Rodgers showed off his brilliance. A throw to Davante Adams came perilously close to being intercepted, setting up 2nd-and-10. Aaron Rodgers leads full-field drive for touchdown in 73 seconds to beat Cowboys

Rodgers tossed a ball to the back right corner of the end zone in what looked like a throw-away. However, Packers running back Jamaal Williams came flying in, grabbed the ball, and got two feet down before falling out of bounds.</p><p>Even NBC's Al Michael began to call it a throw-away before saying it surprised him that Williams caught it for the score.</p><p>The incredible play put the Packers up 24-17.</p><p>While it initially looked like Williams saved a broken play, another angle appears to show Rodgers seeing Williams and tossing the ball up. Rodgers let go of the ball shortly after Williams raised his hands up in the end zone.</p><p>While referees reviewed the play to confirm the touchdown, the normally stoic Rodgers even looked impressed.</p><p>&#xa0;</p><p>Players on both sides were in disbelief after the game.</p><p>"I truly believe he was throwing it away," Chiefs safety&#xa0;Tyrann Mathieu&#xa0;said.</p><p>Packers tight end Jimmy Graham said it was the type of throw makes Rodgers the "GOAT."</p><p>"I saw the ball in the air and I was like, 'That's a little high,' and then I look back..." Graham said after the game. "I mean, that's just who he is. He's special. It's moments like that that make him the GOAT."</p><p>Williams said he and Rodgers made eye contact and he just went to the corner to go get the ball.</p><p>"When we met eyes, I just seen him throw it and then after that, I'm just like, 'Hmm, this ball looks like it's going in the corner. Might as well go and run after it,'" Williams said.</p><p>Rodgers said he did mean to target Graham, but he felt it was a "safe" throw because nobody was in the back of the end zone.</p><p>"I was actually throwing a ball that I thought maybe Jimmy could go up and get if he wanted to and, if he didn't, the guy behind him might be able to get it. Luckily, the guy behind him got it," Rodgers said.</p><p>Rodgers downplayed the idea that he and Williams "locked eyes" on the play, but he said he did see Williams in the end zone.</p><p>"It seemed like there wasn't anybody in the back of the end zone, so I felt like it was a safe throw."</p><p>"That was one of the best, if not the best pass I've ever seen live, in person," Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said. "That was incredible. I couldn't believe it."</p><p>The Packers eventually picked up the win, with running back Aaron Jones scoring on a 67-yard screen pass on the next possession. Eshleman</span></p><ul class="summary-list"><li>The spread of the coronavirus has forced the military service branches to alter their recruiting and training efforts.</li><li>For the Navy's esports team, recently established to aid that recruiting, the pandemic has forced some scheduling changes but hasn't derailed its outreach to potential sailors.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul><p>The military is proceeding cautiously with its recruiting and training, hoping to limit the spread of the coronavirus. For the Navy's new esports team, <a href="https://www.dvidshub.net/video/741905/goats-and-glory" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Goats &amp; Glory</a>, that has impeded some programs but hasn't slowed its outreach.</p><p>Navy Recruiting Command <a href="https://www.public.navy.mil/bupers-npc/reference/messages/Documents/NAVADMINS/NAV2020/NAV20048.txt" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> the formation of the team in February, saying it would add to its "multi-faceted outreach campaign" by "engaging with prospective sailors online and at gaming venues."</p><p>The campaign kicked off in late February at DreamHack Anaheim, where team members played attendees. The Navy has already lined up partnerships with Twitch, a major live-streaming platform, with ESL, the world's largest esports company, and with DBLTAP, an esports website that will work with the Navy on "role comparison" videos highlighting similarities between jobs in the Navy and roles on an esports team.</p><p>Coronavirus-related precautions have affected some of those plans. </p><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5e867ab02ff8391b603f17f7-1400/6110422.jpg" alt="Navy esports team Goats &amp; Glory" /><p class="source"><span>US Navy/MCS 2nd Class Zachary S. Eshleman</span></p><p class="caption">Machinist's Mate 2nd Class Andrew Crosswhite at DreamHack Anaheim, February 22, 2020.</p><p>"With the role-comparison videos, we were actually in the early stages of the production planning" when those precautions when into effect, "which of course impacted all travel," Allen Owens, Navy Recruiting Command's deputy chief marketing officer, told Insider on Wednesday, adding that the production is "on hold."</p><p>Also affected was the team's participation in DreamHack Dallas, scheduled for May.</p><p>"We were going to have a presence there and have our gamers up and ready to engage with the crowds," Capt. Matt Boren, chief marketing officer for the command, told Insider, adding that the event had been delayed until August.</p><p>But other than "general rescheduling," Boren said, "there's been really no impact to the overall establishment of the sports team, the streaming on Twitch, and it actually is enhancing our virtual recruiting strategy right now."</p><p>Navy recruiters are making calls and FaceTiming and coordinating with the team to do that recruiting, Boren said.</p><p>"So any way we can help produce leads and hand them over to field recruiters to help educate our audience about opportunities in the Navy is really what we're after. Eshleman</span></p><p class="caption">Members of the Navy's esports team, Goats &amp; Glory, at DreamHack Anaheim, February 22, 2020.</p><p>Goats &amp; Glory isn't the Navy's first foray into <a href="https://www.navycs.com/blogs/2020/02/26/the-navy-esports-team" target="_blank" rel="noopener">online gaming</a>, nor is it the military's first esports team; <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/army-is-using-esports-to-put-to-recruit-american-teenagers-2020-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the Army set its own team up two years ago</a>. But the Navy, like other services, is shifting recruiting resources into digital media to reach young Americans, particularly those between 17 and 24 years of age.</p><p>The Navy is always looking for new ways to market itself to future sailors, Boren said. "What it came down to is esports is a booming business with millions of consumers, and we wanted to make sure we had a means to reach that audience."</p><p>Navy Recruiting Command looked at the Army's esports experience, inquiring about everything from establishing a team to setting up a gaming station, and is partnering with the esports industry.</p><p>The ad agency VMLY&amp;R, which is the Navy's ad agency of record and has <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2019/08/08/the-navy-taps-youtube-creators-for-its-latest-recruiting-campaign/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">already helped</a> the service partner with YouTube creators, reached out to industry on behalf of the service, Boren said.</p><p>"One of the requirements was wherever Navy invests, we need to be able to show some return on investment - how many people are being reached, what kind of engagement we're getting on that platform," Boren said. "They have experts within their company that do other esports for other clients. So it was really a lot of their expertise, and then they made recommendations to us on where they thought the Navy would fit in best."</p><p>That yielded partnerships with Twitch, ESL, and DBLTAP, as well as the presence at DreamHacks, Boren said.</p><p>The role-comparison videos to be developed with DBLTAP are especially important, Boren said. "We hope that this content will be compelling so that people can say, 'OK, the stuff you are as a team member in role-playing and gaming sports has some applicability in real life.'"</p><p>Goats &amp; Glory has 10 members stationed across the US, some of whom will move to Navy Recruiting Command's base in Millington, Tennessee, from which they'll stream and do outreach. The command is looking for six more members for its "Counter Strike: Global Offensive" team.</p><p>To help evaluate sailors who want to join - <a href="https://www.cnrc.navy.mil/ESPORTS/index-esports.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">an application process</a> that focuses on but isn't limited to "CS:GO" on PC - the Navy is working with Twitch as well as Evil Geniuses, a well-known esports organization founded in 1999.</p><p>Evil Geniuses brings needed expertise to the search, said Lt. Robert Dyer, esports program manager for Navy Recruiting Command.</p><p>"This is what they do for a living," Dyer told Insider. "They're going to look at these candidates and be able to tell us, 'Hey, this person, I can see what he's doing in the game, and he has the right reaction time, the right kind of knowledge of match awareness and ... the right fluidity to move about the map, the right comms to use, the right shortcuts."</p><p>"Even something as simple as weapons selection, spray patterns, they know those things inside and out, and they're going to be able to tell who knows those things and who doesn't, just based on watching somebody play," Dyer said.</p><p>The command's long-term goal is a competitive team of six at its headquarters and a pool of gamers around the world who can stream and attend events.</p><h2>'It's been a great experience'</h2><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5e867ab2487c221b7b50d476-1676/screen shot 2020-04-02 at 74251 pm.png" alt="Navy esports team Goats &amp; Glory" /><p class="source"><span>US Navy/MCS 2nd Class Zachary S. Eshleman</span></p><p class="caption">Members of the Navy's esports team, Goats &amp; Glory, at DreamHack Anaheim, February 22, 2020.</p><p>Interest among current and potential sailors has been strong, the officials said Wednesday.</p><p>The internal application portal opened about two weeks ago and has already received more than 1,000 responses - "that's a really good response rate for us," Dyer said.</p><p>That application asks for a range of information, including rank and other statistics for "CS:GO" specifically but also for details of the applicant's overall competitiveness.</p><p>"We're also looking at do you stream, to kind of get an idea of do we have any of that talent out there in the Navy community already that we can tap into," Dyer said. "Also just the general [question], why do you want to join the team? Because everybody has a story ... and you've got to have the right personalities in the right places to really make any kind of sports team work."</p><p>At DreamHack Anaheim, the Navy <a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/americas-navy-partners-with-biggest-names-in-esports-to-engage-gen-z-301009960.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">was the first</a> presenting sponsor ever of the BYOC, or Bring Your Own Computer, activation space.</p><p>"We had a big 20-by-20 booth set up with a bunch of different stations ... some X-boxes, some PlayStations, and then we had four PCs," said Lt. Aaron Jones, a team member. "On the upper floor, where we were, we were the only active free play exhibit. So people would come up, and we'd have Navy people around the exhibit. We talked to them. We'd get them to sign in, just a general questionnaire ... and then we'd be like, 'Hey, do you want to play against one of our Navy esports team members?'"</p><p>The six primary team members were on hand to play with and against attendees in one-on-one and two-on-two Counterstrike matches, Jones said.</p><p>"We've got a bunch of people that we're still in contact with today that talk to us all the time ... on the America's Navy Discord channel that we've got up," Jones said. Other questions, like about joining the esports team, are directed to Navy recruiters who can talk about the range of jobs in the service.</p><p>"Currently I think it's over 80 people that we've met just in the last week, week and a half, that have popped into the Discord channel just to continue talking, and we've been building these relationships," Jones said. "It's been a great experience."</p><p>Some observers have <a href="https://www.pcgamer.com/us-navy-enters-the-esports-scene-with-esl-north-america-and-dreamhack-deal/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">expressed reservations</a> about the gaming industry partnering so closely with the military, while some in the military community have been reticent about targeting gamers.</p><p>Boren emphasized the scope of the effort, saying content that will be produced "is relevant to anybody. Even somebody that's not interested in the Navy at all will find these videos entertaining because it will make them better gamers."</p><p>The recruits the campaign wants to attract are also generally well suited for <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/military-recruiting-efforts-affecting-future-navy-ship-designs-2020-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the range and complexity of the jobs sailors are asked to do</a>, Boren said.</p><p>"We had a lot of people, at least some older people, who were kind of curious when we talked about Navy getting into the esports realm, because they're like, 'Are you going to be recruiting a bunch of couch potatoes?'"</p><p>"What we found is today's gamers are very team-oriented. They can make split-second decisions. They can perform and communicate under pressure, good hand-eye coordination, really the ability to process a lot of information quickly."</p><p>"If you think about the advanced systems in the Navy and modern warfare, you have to be able to consume a lot of information," Boren added. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/57bf3eb209d29322008b480f-1260/kajubpuu.png" alt="Cincinnati heroin overdoses" data-mce-source="WCPO/Screenshot" /><p class="source"><span>WCPO/Screenshot</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>The nation's opioid overdose epidemic appears to be getting out of control.</p><p>In Cincinnati, police <a href="http://www.wlwt.com/news/cincinnatis-spike-in-heroin-overdoses-turns-deadly-wednesday/41357850">reported 60 overdose cases</a> in the city over the course of Tuesday and Wednesday.</p><p>In southern Indiana, Jennings and Jackson counties reported 14 overdose cases between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.</p><p>And Mount Sterling, a small city of about 7,000 people in northern Kentucky,<a href="http://www.kentucky.com/news/local/crime/article97762417.html"> reported 12 overdoses in the city</a> and surrounding Montgomery county on Wednesday alone.</p><p>This week's overdoses follow a similar cluster in Huntington, West Virginia, last week, when Cabell County officials reported 26 overdose cases over the course of a four-hour period.</p><p>The flood of overdoses has left police and emergency workers exhausted and, at times, overwhelmed.</p><p><span>"We have never seen anything like this before to this magnitude," Gordon Merry, Emergency Management Service director for Cabell County <a href="http://www.foxnews.com/us/2016/08/23/w-va-city-swamped-by-overdoses-as-nation-battles-surging-opioid-epidemic.html">told Fox News</a> of the Huntington overdoses on Tuesday. </span></p><p><span>In Cincinnati, calls <a href="http://www.wcpo.com/news/local-news/hamilton-county/cincinnati/tri-state-police-departments-respond-to-spike-in-heroin-overdoses">came from every part of the city</a>, according to WCPO, </span><span>an ABC affiliate in Cincinnati. One person overdosed in the bathroom of an ice cream parlor, another in a McDonald's, and another overdosed while driving, causing a car crash. While most were revived, one individual died inside a local restaurant. </span></p><p><span>Cincinnati police officer Ryan Lay described two-day period as "<a href="http://www.wlwt.com/news/cincinnatis-spike-in-heroin-overdoses-turns-deadly-wednesday/41357850">complete madness</a>" in an interview with WLWT, an NBC affiliate based in the city. </span></p><p><span>"It was one call to the next for heroin overdoses," Lay said.</span></p><p><span>Another Cincinnati officer called the overdoses unprecedented.</span></p><p><span>"Within a shift, you might consider a shift busy if you have five or six, and that's something to talk about. But to have 10 to 16 in a 90-minute gap, that's highly unusual and that's what alarmed us to act so quickly,"<span> </span></span><span>District 3 Capt. Synan said the coalition would be working with<span> </span>Cincinnati police to try to track down the source of the heroin causing the overdoses. </span></p><p><span>Fentanyl <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-fentanyl-the-drug-that-killed-prince/#then-its-packed-up-and-smuggled-into-the-us-12">is a synthetic opioid painkiller</a> sometimes prescribed to treat severe pain in cancer patients. The drug, which is available in a patch or liquid, </span>is 80 to 100 times more powerful than morphine and about 40 to 50 times more potent than 100% pure heroin.</p><p>Carfentanil, meanwhile, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-carfentanil-the-elephant-sedative/#this-is-fentanyl-it-looks-like-any-other-prescription-painkiller--but-it-isnt-1">is an even more powerful opioid</a>. The drug is frequently used as an elephant tranquilizer. It is<span> </span><a href="https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/compound/carfentanil#section=Top">100 times as potent as fentanyl</a><span>, which makes it roughly </span><a href="https://books.google.com/books?id=eJW4vmjSqEYC&amp;pg=PA74&amp;lpg=PA74&amp;dq#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false">10,000 times stronger</a><span> than morphine.</span></p><p><span>Synthetic opioids have become more popular in recent years as producers in China and Mexico have ramped up production. </span>Incidents of law-enforcement officers finding drugs containing fentanyl jumped 426% from 2013 to 2014, according to a <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/index.html">new CDC report released Thursday</a>. The report found that deaths from synthetic opioids like fentanyl rose by 79% over the same time period.</p><p>"In contrast to the 2005-2007 fentanyl overdose outbreak, when deaths were confined to several states, the current epidemic is unprecedented in scope," the report states.</p><p><span>So far, victims have been telling police that they received the heroin that caused their overdose from several different dealers in different areas, including some dealers who gave out the drug as free samples, Jones told WCPO.</span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/57bf41bcb996eb93008b4880-920/4pz7g26r.png" alt="overdoses kentucky indiana" data-mce-source="Google Maps/Screenshot" data-mce-caption="The sites of a cluster of overdoses over the last two weeks." /><p class="source"><span>Google Maps/Screenshot</span></p><p class="caption">The sites of a cluster of overdoses over the last two weeks.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Van Ingram, executive director of Kentucky's Office of Drug Control Policy, told the Lexington Herald Leader that <a href="http://www.kentucky.com/news/local/crime/article97762417.html">it's too early to tell</a> if the overdoses in Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky are from the same heroin source. </span></p><p><span>He did, however, say that the time frame of the overdoses, as well as the close geographical location of the overdoses, "begs the question." Lab testing, which will likely take several months, will hold the answer, according to Ingram, but until then it is impossible to know. </span></p><p><span>"It's a very scary thing," Ingram said. "What we see across the country is the drug cartels moving away from heroin and moving toward these opioids they're going to produce themselves. People think they're buying one thing and they're actually buying another. The stuff they're selling is so powerful. Some of the stuff we're seeing produced is 50 times more potent than heroin, as if heroin wasn't bad enough."</span></p><p><span>Police in Huntington suspect that last week's overdoses were caused by a batch of heroin mixed with fentanyl, or perhaps rather "<a href="https://www.statnews.com/2016/08/22/heroin-huntington-west-virginia-overdoses/">fentanyl laced with heroin</a>," police chief Joe Ciccarelli<span> </span>told Stat News. Huntington has seen a wave of fentanyl-caused overdoses since early 2015, he added.</span></p><p><span>Health and law-enforcement officials in Hamilton County in Ohio have made similar intimations <a href="http://www.courier-journal.com/story/news/local/northern-ky/2016/08/22/od-threat-rises-antidote-fails-work-first-time/89093844/">about the presence of fentanyl or carfentanil</a> in the heroin causing the overdoses over the last several days. Police have routinely found heroin mixed with fentanyl and carfentanil in recent weeks, Lt. Tom Fallon, the commander of the </span><span>Hamilton County Heroin Coalition, told The Courier Journal.</span></p><p><span>"Both of these can have deadly consequences, especially if the user is unaware of their presence in the drug supply," he said.</span></p><p><span>The difficulty for users is that such mixed or laced drugs are rarely if ever described as such by dealers, Jessica Sageser, <a href="http://www.wcpo.com/news/local-news/butler-county/hamilton/deadly-heroin-cocktails-are-making-traditional-treatments-obsolete">a former heroin user in Cincinnati</a>, told WCPO.</span></p><p><span>"It's not like they hand you your dope and say, 'Here's the carfentanil dope.' You don't know," Sageser said.</span></p><p><span>Further complicating matters is the fact that the more potent laced or mixed drugs do not respond as well to naloxone, a drug that can instantly reverse an opioid overdose. Because carfentanil and fentanyl are so much more potent than heroin, they frequently require multiple doses of naloxone to prevent victims from falling back into the overdose when the naloxone wears off. </span></p><p><span>Police in Seymour, Indiana, said they <a href="http://www.14news.com/story/32829218/update-5-arrested-after-10-drug-overdoses-in-6-hours-in-jennings-co">needed four doses of naloxone</a> to revive one overdose victim on Wednesday. Similar stories have popped up in Cincinnati. </span></p><p><span>"We have been receiving reports from some of our colleagues in the healthcare systems that people have had to be put on IVs of Naloxone just to keep them and bring them back," Hamilton County assistant health commissioner Craig Davidson told WCPO.
