Amid privacy concerns, Centre makes Aarogya Setu app open source

New Delhi, Apr 13 () A high-powered committee comprising government officials and tech leaders, set up by the Prime Minister's Office, is working on solutions to deal with the coronavirus crisis, including the next version of Aarogya Setu app, according to a source.The committee has been formed under Principal Scientific advisor Professor Vijay Raghavan.The member includes IT secretary Ajay Sawhney, Trai Chairperson RS Sharma, telecom secretary Anshu Prakash, Tata Group chairperson N Chandrasekaran, Mahindra Group chairman Anand Mahindra, Tech Mahindra CEO CP Gurnani, Professor V Kamakoti of IIT Chennai and Google map founder Lalitesh Katragadda."The committee meets regularly and is progressing aggressively and the PMO is actively involved. They meet 3 to 4 times a week to discuss the next steps. Apple and Google offer Indian authorities their new COVID-19 contact tracing platform

However, response data may be shared with such third parties only if it is strictly necessary to directly formulate or implement appropriate health responses, it added. Hard anonymisation refers to a series of technical processes which ensure that any individual is incapable of being identified from the response data through any means reasonably likely to be used to identify such individual. This anonymisation shall be done in accordance with anonymisation protocols that are to be developed, reviewed and updated on a periodic basis by an expert committee appointed by the principal scientific advisor to the Government of India. "Such review shall have regard to the nature and sensitivity of the data being processed, the robustness of the anonymisation protocol and advances in technology. Response data which has undergone hard anonymisation, as under para 8(a), may be made available to Indian universities and research institutions / research entities registered in India," it said. Any violation of these directions may lead to penalties as per section 51 to 60 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005 and other legal provisions as may be applicable, as per the protocol. The complex does not allow anyone without checking the Covid status on Aarogya Setu app on the visitors' smartphones, along with the mandatory thermal temperature screening. <keyword id="9999872" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="whenever-kumar">Whenever Kumar</keyword> plans a visit to the complex, he updates the <keyword id="7313056" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Contact-tracing">contact tracing</keyword> app on his smartphone as well as the devices with his family members, filling the self-assessment form by just ticking all the boxes with "none of the above' symptoms. And the app declares them "safe". As cities get unlocked and people begin to visit markets, eating joints, malls and other public places, this attitude is worrisome as this does not paint the real picture, especially if someone who is an asymptomatic Covid patient visits public places even with the 'safe' app tag on. "I only update the app while visiting the complex and leave it without any use for days. It surprises me that it is so easy to just fill in wrong details and enter wherever you want with the 'you are safe' tag," Kumar told IANS. Kumar said he has even seen people who are not aware of the Aarogya Setu app, downloading it right in front of the complex, filling the self-assessment form quickly with 'None of the Above' symptoms and entering the premises, only to remove the app later. According to latest data from app intelligence company Sensor Tower, Aarogya Setu downloads have decreased significantly in the country, as much as 90 per cent less last month compared to April when it was launched with much fanfare. As Delhi Metro resumed services after more than five months due to Covid-19 restrictions, officials in some stations, including Noida Sector 16, were seen trying to block entry of people into the station for not having "Aarogya Setu" app on their mobile phones during the initial trial phase. Aarogya Setu downloads drop 90% since April

New Delhi, May 7 () For over 34,000 employees of the country's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI), an in-house developed Wellness Mitra App has been acting as the guardian angel to assist them over the past two weeks as coronavirus pandemic rages on.The app that complements the Aarogya Setu App has been made mandatory for all employees across the value chain, requiring them to update their health status, including close family members, on the app everyday, according to the company.It has been developed to ensure safety and monitor employees' health on a real time basis, while a 'COVID-19 Task Force' has also been set up to ensure that all health and safety advisories are followed by the employees, it added.Commenting on the steps taken by the company to ensure safety of its employees, Maruti Suzuki India Member Executive Board (HR, IT and Safety) Rajesh Uppal said, "We are passing through an unprecedented global health crisis. Employees' safety is our top priority and we have developed the Wellness Mitra application that complements the Aarogya Setu App".The Aarogya Setu app helps in contact tracing and sends alert about COVID-19 positive cases in the vicinity, he said, adding "with the use of technology, we are monitoring health of all our employees on a real time basis"."The Wellness Mitra App has been developed in-house and it helps maintain the health log sheet of employees across all our locations in the country. It not just helps us to monitor well-being of employees but they can also seek help in case of any emergency through the app," Uppal further said.As the company gears up to resume operations both at its Manesar plant and in offices where relaxations are applicable, monitoring through the app. MSI is allowing employees who report good health for at least 14 consecutive days to come to work.Among the precautions, every MSI employees are required to record body temperature on the app every day and at the same time they can also can seek emergency medical support if required with help promptly extended by the company's rapid action task force.Questions such as if an employee has symptoms of fever, cough, difficulty in breathing, loss of smell, loss of taste, diarrhoea are asked in the Wellness Mitra App and details are closely monitored by reporting managers, across all locations/states in India.It also checks if there are any COVID-19 positive cases in employees' vicinity, while also periodically broadcasting the government guidelines of dos and don'ts.In addition, the company said it has also set up a 24x7 help desk to address any concerns and questions of employees.Maruti Suzuki India said it has also developed a similar app for its dealer and vendor partners to cover entire value chain. The UK has decided not to use the framework proposed by tech giants Apple and Google for its NHS coronavirus contact tracing app. Despite privacy and security concerns, NHSX, the digital arm of the country's health organisation, is creating a centralised app, Mail Online reported on Tuesday. The framework proposed by Apple and Google is a decentralised one, meaning that the tracking information will not be stored in a central server. NHSX in a blog over the weekend said that it has prioritised security and privacy in all stages of the app's development, starting with the initial design, and user testing. Apple and Google have also offered their expertise to help NHSX build its own app. "We have drawn on expertise from across government and industry to review our design and help test the app," NHSX said in the blog. "We are working with Apple and Google on their welcome support for tracing apps around the world," it added. In an unprecedented collaboration earlier this month, Google and Apple announced their decision to pull their expertise for tracking COVID-19 spread with the help of smartphones. They said that their Bluetooth-driven exposure notification system to enable iOS and Android phones trace the spread of coronavirus is completely safe. The NHS in Britain is facing questions as to why it needed to have its own framework for coronavirus contact tracing app. The NHS app is likely to be rolled out in two to three weeks, said the report. But before that the app is rolled out, it will be tested in a trial with a small number of people. UK rejects Google and Apple's Coronavirus tracking app framework

"We have been driving all our efforts tirelessly to fight this ongoing crisis and it has been great to witness the industry joining their hands against our war on Covid. In these testing times technology innovation has been our greatest ally," said Deputy Chief Minister C. N. Ashwathnarayan in a statement. The end to end tracking platform is based on open architecture using advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) models to help state governments take informed decisions. Coming with a plug and play option, Karnataka government can choose the features it wants to use and can also integrate the solution with its existing platform. It can be hosted on any cloud platform as preferred by the government. Multiple IT players have collaborated for free to build the platform whose initial set of dashboards will be offered to the government. Six dashboards have been developed for the southern state which include Covid summary, Covid source analysis, testing summary, tests by category, hospital capacity and India summary. Nasscom Task Force consists of Intel India, Fractal Analytics, Microsoft India, AWS, Mindtree, SAP Labs India, Infosys, Accenture, Wipro, Sprinklr, Tableau, Mapbox and others. The IT industry body aims to deliver a similar platform to other states as well.
