Atishi set to become Delhi's new Chief Minister as Arvind Kejriwal steps down months before the assembly elections

The arrest, the first of a sitting chief minister, came hours after the Delhi High Court refused to grant protection to the <keyword id="19914482" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="aap" source="keywords">AAP</keyword> national convenor from any coercive action by the agency. The 55-year-old leader's arrest, amid campaign for the <keyword id="19895394" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lok-sabha" source="keywords">Lok Sabha</keyword> elections, drew angry reactions from his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Soon after the high court order, an ED team reached his residence and carried out searches. Subsequently, he was arrested, officials said. Officials said the ED would produce the chief minister before a court here on Friday and seek his custody for interrogation. As the ED officials carried out their action inside, additional Delhi Police personnel and Rapid Action Force (RAF) and CRPF teams were deployed around the chief minister's residence. The additional deployment was made as the ED sought extra security measures in anticipation of protests by AAP supporters, sources said. A large number of AAP workers and leaders gathered near the chief minister's residence and shouted slogans against the ED action. During the day, <keyword id="19895701" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kejriwal" source="keywords">Kejriwal</keyword> moved the Supreme Court against the high court's order denying him any relief in the matter. The ED's action is virtually a replay of what transpired during the arrest last week of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader <keyword id="19987244" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="k-kavitha" source="keywords">K Kavitha</keyword>, who is now in ED custody in the same case. The case pertains to alleged corruption and money laundering in formulating and executing the Delhi government's excise policy for 2021-22, which was later scrapped. AAP leaders Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh are in judicial custody in the case. Kejriwal's name has been mentioned multiple times in the charge sheets filed by the ED. The agency has alleged that the accused were in touch with Kejriwal for formulating the excise policy that resulted in undue benefits to them in return for which they paid kickbacks to the AAP.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal arrested by ED

A Delhi court on Monday sent Chief Minister <keyword id="19901384" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="arvind-kejriwal" source="keywords">Arvind Kejriwal</keyword> to <keyword id="6358969" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="judicial-custody" source="Orion">judicial custody</keyword> till April 15, while the AAP supremo moved an application to have three books -- Bhagavad Gita, Ramayana and How Prime Ministers Decide. He was produced before Special <keyword id="21152631" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Judge-Kaweri-Baweja" source="Orion">Judge Kaweri Baweja</keyword> of the Rouse Avenue Court on the expiry of his previously extended <keyword id="6357808" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Enforcement-Directorate" source="Orion">Enforcement Directorate</keyword> (ED) custody in connection with the money laundering case related to the alleged excise policy scam. On March 28, Judge Baweja had extended his ED custody, holding that there were "sufficient reasons". However, she had allowed him to meet his family members and lawyers. On Monday, the CM was produced amid heavy security while counsel for both ED and <keyword id="19919267" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cm-kejriwal" source="keywords">CM Kejriwal</keyword> made submissions virtually. Senior Advocates Vikram Chaudhary and Ramesh Gupta appeared for him and Additional Solicitor General (ASG) S.V. Raju for the probe agency. Seeking his judicial custody, ASG Raju said "we (ED) seek his judicial custody and no more ED remand". Alleging the same as it had alleged last time, the ED said: "He (<keyword id="19895701" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="kejriwal" source="keywords">Kejriwal</keyword>) is non-cooperative and is giving evasive replies." The ASG made another similar submission as last time saying that CM Kejriwal isn't giving password to his phone. The court was told by ASG that the ED might seek his custody later. After a brief hearing, the judge sent CM Kejriwal to judicial custody till April 15. The accused has also moved an application to be provided with a special diet, medicines, books and religious locket which he wore while being in custody. Earlier, the probe agency had sought the Chief Minister's custody for seven more days. However, after hearing the arguments, the court had extended the AAP supremo's ED remand by four days till April 1, observing that there appear to be "sufficient reasons" to permit his further custodial interrogation, particularly keeping in view the submissions of the ED. The probe agency had submitted that he is required to be confronted with the material collected and statements recorded so far in the course of the investigation. The court had directed the investigation officer to ensure that further interrogation and confrontation, etc., of the accused is done without any delay. Judge Baweja had allowed CM Kejriwal to meet his family members, including his wife, daughter, PA and advocates. Moreover, the court had directed the agency to conduct the interrogation at a place with CCTV coverage and for the preservation of the footage. The ED was also asked to provide the requisite medication to CM Kejriwal and get him medically examined in accordance with the law during the period of his custody. The ED arrested CM Kejriwal on March 21 after questioning him for over two hours at his official residence in Delhi. The ED has termed CM Kejriwal the "kingpin and the key conspirator" of the alleged excise scam in collusion with other ministers of the Delhi government, AAP leaders, and other persons.

Excise policy case: Delhi court sends CM Kejriwal to judicial custody till April 15

"Should he (Kejriwal) be let off because he is a chief minister and not a common man," he asked, alleging that the Delhi chief minister is a kingpin in the corruption case being probed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). With opposition parties, including the Congress, rallying to Kejriwal's defence and describing his arrest as part of the Union government's crackdown on their leaders, the BJP spokesperson said it is a case of thieves displaying brotherhood. As Delhi government minister Atishi questioned the arrest of a chief minister and expressed concern about his safety as he has 'Z plus' security, he hit back, saying it shows their sense of entitlement. She is saying how a CM can be arrested as he is not a common man, Patra said, noting that Kejriwal once named the likes of Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Lalu Prasad Yadav as corrupt and would ask when people will start going to the jail. The AAP leader then claimed he has entered politics to cleanse it but began living in a palace and moving around in a security cover, he said. "It is high time that people who are embroiled in corruption are arrested," Patra asserted. He also accused the BJP of using government investigation agencies and other constitutional institutions to their advantage in the upcoming elections. He added that the people of INDIA Alliance, stand firmly with the Delhi government. "The way Delhi's Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was arrested today clearly shows that the BJP is completely scared and wants to fight elections with the help of government investigation agencies and other constitutional institutions. We, the people of the INDIA Alliance, stand firmly with the Delhi government. We are not the ones who get scared, we are the ones who fight and win," he said in a post on X. A team from the Enforcement Directorate arrived at Kejriwal's residence on Thursday to interrogate him regarding the liquor policy case. During a search operation conducted at his residence, Kejriwal was arrested amidst dramatic circumstances, as the AAP convener failed to obtain interim protection from arrest in the liquor policy case from the Delhi High Court. The Enforcement Directorate took him to the agency's headquarters later. A medical team also arrived at the ED office. AAP workers and leaders rallied behind Kejriwal following his arrest while leaders of the INDIA bloc also extended their support for the AAP leader. BJP leaders extended their support to the ED's actions against the Delhi Chief Minister, emphasizing "truth had to prevail".
