Unless you were in coma or live in a cave, you must be aware of the whole hubbub over Aamir Khan’s ‘controversial’ remark on the growing intolerance in the country. However, remove what’s being circulated in social media and whatsapp forwards, and we have a clear picture of what Mr. Khan said. In his statements, there was no talk of intolerance; the word ‘religion’ wasn’t mentioned anywhere, and no one talked about leaving the country or being anti-national. 
 
Still, Aamir Khan has faced police complaints, protests, burnt effigies and even claims of people being promised cash rewards for slapping him.

 Now that we know what was on his mind, let’s not forget that there are many in Bollywood, who have questioned Aamir’s patriotism and sanity over the comments that he had made. The whole growing debate over religious intolerance stemmed from the killing of Akhlaq, a Dadri resident, on rumors that he had consumed beef. Superstar Shah Rukh Khan, on being pestered for comments on this topic had said that Indian youth should work towards making India a secular, progressive country. He too was misquoted and this went on to become a hot topic of discussion for many days, as we saw people citing Khan to be a traitor and advising him to settle down in Pakistan. 
 
To conclude the whole debate, by creating sparks about nothing and standing outside someone’s house to protest, forcing him to send his wife and kids outside the city for safety,aren’t people proving that India is actually growing intolerant, not that Aamir said anything about it at all?

 National Award winner Radhakrishnan Parthiban has written, directed and produced the upcoming Tamil movie-- in the lines of Tom Hanks' 'Cast Away' (2000), 'All is Lost' (2013) starring Robert Redford, 'Buried' (2010) with Ryan Reynolds in the lead role-- making it the 19th solo act film in the world, <a href="https://www.imdb.com/list/ls069176996/" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">according to the IMDb</a>. 'Oththa Seruppu Size 7' is a non-linear tale of a middle-aged man Masilamani, a security guard at a popular sports and recreation club, who is being questioned as a murder suspect while his terminally ill young son waits outside the investigation room. From Aamir Khan to Rajinikanth to Mohanlal-- all want Oscar nomination for this upcoming Indian movie

This is the view held by five brokerage firms — ICICI Securities/Direct, Motilal Oswal, Prabhudas Lilladher and ShareKhan. They believe that good movies can help them replicate the March success which came with superhits like the controversial Kashmir Files; Rajamouli’s RRR, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s period drama Gangubai Kathiawadi, followed up by KGF 2 in April. “They witnessed a March — which was the best ever in the history, led by superlative performances of movies,” ICICI Direct said in its views on PVR and INOX both. The March footfalls made up for half of the Jan-March quarters footfalls in theaters. But both these companies need more than a good month to turn things around. Paytm's new campaign aims to spark a conversation about rethinking what treating women respectfully means

China-based ByteDance which is the parent company of <keyword id="6762469" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="TikTok">TikTok</keyword>, has reportedly started selling the AI technology of the short video-making app to other companies, including in <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> where the app is banned. The <keyword id="35662" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="financial-times">Financial Times</keyword> reports that the company has kicked off a new devision called BytePlus and is selling TikTok AI to companies like India-based social gaming platform GamesApp, US fashion app Goat, Singapore travel site <keyword id="325017" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Wego">WeGo</keyword>, Indonesian shopping app Chilibeli, among others. In 2020, the Indian government banned several apps developed by Chinese firms, including TikTok, over concerns that these apps were engaging in activities that threatened the national security and defence of the country. Last month, Nikhil Gandhi, the <keyword id="114975" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India-head">India Head</keyword> of <keyword id="1334" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="China">China</keyword>'s ByteDance-owned short video-sharing platform TikTok, decided to quit. TikTok roped in Gandhi in 2019 as its India head to drive the next phase of growth for the Chinese short video-sharing platform. TikTok's recommendation algorithm is a huge part of what has made it so popular. According to the report that came out on Sunday, BytePlus offers customers the chance to access the TikTok recommendation algorithm, and "personalise it for their apps and customers". BytePlus also offers automated speech and text translation and real-time video effects as well as data analysis tools, according to its website. The core TikTok algorithms, often credited for the rapid growth of the platform, determine the videos users see even before they start following creators. The company said in a blog post recently that its 'ForYou' feed determines what videos to serve a given user. Its recommendations are based on user interactions including which videos you like, share comment on, or create, video information, and device and account settings including what device you're using, language preferences, and location settings. TikTok's source code and user data are maintained separately from other businesses of its parent company ByteDance. The company is valued at $3 billion, its chief executive officer (CEO) Amrish Rau has confirmed. The round was co-led by Fidelity Management &amp; Research Co and BlackRock Inc, with participation from a fund managed by Neuberger Berman Investment Advisers LLC, IIFL Asset Management Company (AMC) and Kotak. IIFL AMC is investing through its late-stage tech fund, whereas Kotak’s investment is subject to approval from market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). Pine Labs, founded in 1998 by Lokvir Kapoor, is a merchants payment solution that enables businesses to accept online and offline digital retail transactions. According to a previous press note shared by the company, it powers over 140,000 merchants, 3.5 lakh points of sale (<keyword id="88570" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="POS">PoS</keyword>) terminals across 3,700 cities and towns in India and Malaysia. Its customers include Apple, Starbucks Corp, McDonald's Corp., among others. The company is now headed by Amrish Rau. The company serves prominent large, mid-sized and small merchants across Asia and the Middle East. Pine Labs’ cloud-based platform enables it to offer a wide range of payment acceptance and merchant commerce solutions, including enterprise automation systems such as inventory management and customer relationship management. Pine Labs also has a stored value platform that enables merchants to issue, process, and distribute digital gift cards for corporate customers around the world. The company acquired Fave, a Kuala Lumpur-based payments and discovery platform, in April 2021. Pine Labs was looking to build a consumer-centric vertical for discounts and discovery in India and Southeast Asia with this acquisition. Over 6 million consumers across over 40,000 merchant establishments now have access to the Fave app, the company said in its recent press note. “Over the last year, Pine Labs has made significant progress in its offline-to-online strategy in India and the direct-to-consumer play in Southeast Asia. Our full-stack approach to payments and merchant commerce has allowed us to grow in-month merchant partnerships by nearly 100% over the last year,” Rau said in the statement. Rau in an interview with Bloomberg, also discussed Pine Labs’ IPO plan, which will likely take place in the US. “With our size and scale, we want to make it a global IPO...We’ve got a good, Ebitda-positive [earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation] story as we plan our IPO in the next 18 months,” he added. Pine Labs has raised over $1.2 billion to date, and counts Sequoia Capital, Temasek Holdings, Actis, PayPal and Mastercard, among others, as investors. The latest round is Pine Labs’ fourth funding round in the last 18 months, and its valuation has tripled in the same period. Payments firm Pine Labs raises $600 million as it plans to go public by 2022

There are things that are commercial, and then there are aspects that are purely emotional. India opened doors to liberalisation early this century and we are doing pretty well. Market is not such a dirty word anymore, since it does not just represent capitalist forces. It also holds forth a bouquet of opportunities that can be used for mutual benefit for stakeholders at different levels. 
 When Prime Minister Narendra Modi said ‘<keyword id="6354869" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="make-in-India">Make in India</keyword>’ should be the motto for the next few years, he surely didn’t mean <keyword id="6375354" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="surrogacy">surrogacy</keyword>. But then, the ‘market’ if we can call it that, in surrogacy is so huge that the growth potential is simply astounding. 
 Most <keyword id="2587023" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="surrogacy-clinics">surrogacy clinics</keyword> in India cater mostly to the needs of overseas couples. In the recent times, the number of Indian couples wanting to have children through surrogacy has also increased. The number of clinics offering surrogacy have increased manifold in the first half of this decade. Today, with no legal framework being present to clearly put surrogacy through a proper process, it remains a hazy area, which needs some real bright light. 
 When it comes to surrogacy, the word ‘market’ or ‘demand’ mean something else. They bring forth both poverty of the surrogate, and the buying power of the childless couple who desperately want children. But, when you consider the fact that a <keyword id="23767" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="surrogate-mother">surrogate mother</keyword> often comes or is made to enter the ‘market’ to up her economic status, ruling out the ‘benefit’ factor isn’t easy. 
 
Because, in a country like India, where poverty can force women to become sex workers, an easy prey to commodification, and somewhat unclear rights to safety and security; the economical power surrogacy vests in a surrogate is considerably higher than living an impoverished life. 
 
It is rather noteworthy that the social and biological aspect of India’s baby boomers has a pattern. Set to be the most populated country in the world, India is also home to excellent medical facilities and is in tune with dynamic technology scenario. 
 
Countries like Australia, the US, UK among others have been considering India a safe option for surrogacy considering the social security and a basic ground work that’s thorough as far as the clinics offering this facility are concerned. This is where the majority of the clients also come to have babies with a surrogate, not out of guilt, but with a lot of concern and clear negotiations on several aspects relating to the birth of the child. 
 
And, today Indians have been acknowledging the strides made in this area of reproductive sciences. Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) as it is known, has been an answer to nature’s challenge that had left many couples childless in the race of time. 
 
Quite a few number of celebrities such as Bollywood actors Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan have been open about the fact that they have had one child each through surrogacy. With this kind of endorsement, without having to sign up a celebrity for the cause, surrogacy has received quite a bit of boost for its cause. 
 
But, what remains to be seen is whether this attention will turn into a boon or bane for the issue. Given the fact that caesarean sections are much higher than ever before in Indian hospitals, blaming it on the changing socio-economic conditions and anatomy of Indian women who don’t want to risk their lives by going through delivery by nature, experts are wary about surrogacy taking the same turn. Would there be a time when surrogacy would be considered ‘cool’ and ‘convenient’ just because it involves no real labour on part of the woman who wishes to be a mother? 
 
Over a period of time, with the bracket of disposable income climbing steadily, will surrogacy cost less and turn into an occupation? Experts surely assume this scientific stride should be used judiciously and not liberally as a substitute to having a child. 
 
Union minister Harshvardhan has provided an indicator about surrogacy being dealt with more seriousness than before, with his opinion where he said adoption was a better option over surrogacy. Will this mean India will stop being a ‘market’? Answers aren't forthcoming yet.
