BYJU'S closes its deal with Aakash Educational Services for nearly $1 billion

BYJU's acquired Delhi-based offline test preparatory services provider <keyword id="6380190" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="aakash" source="Orion">Aakash</keyword> for $1 billion last year. The company was reacting to reports that Blackstone and other shareholders of Aakash are yet to be paid in both cash and stock as it has deferred the payment. A company spokesperson told IANS that the acquisition of "Aakash is fully on track and all payments are expected to be completed by the agreed upon date, i.e., August 2022". "Aakash is our most successful acquisition till date and we are very proud to have them in our fold," the company spokesperson added. "Along with all our group companies, we continue to be perfectly poised to provide access to quality education in all learning segments from early learning to exam prep and career success, the spokesperson said. Aakash Educational Services provides test preparation services for medical and engineering entrance exams, school/board exams, and other exams via Aakash Centres. The edtech unicorn made at least 10 acquisitions for a cumulative transaction value of about $2.5 billion last year. The latest development at BYJU's comes as the Indian edtech market is shrinking with reopening of schools, colleges and physical tuition centres. New Delhi, Jan 6 () Entrance test preparation services provider Aakash Educational Services Ltd (AESL) on Monday said it has acquired ed-tech company Applect Learning Systems for Rs 100 crore.
 The company has entered into a definitive agreement with Info Edge (India) Ltd and other selling shareholders to acquire ALSPL, which offers learning programmes under brand name 'Meritnation' catering to students of class I to XII, AESL said in a statement.
 When asked about the value of the deal, a company official said, "it is Rs 100 core for the entire stake."
 In October last year Blackstone had picked up 37.5 per cent stake in Aakash Educational Services for Rs 1,350 crore and announced the intention to create a digitally enabled, omni-channel test preparation company. 
 "As part of this strategy, AESL plans to acquire Meritnation to accelerate the growth of its online live tutoring business and continues to evaluate potential acquisition opportunities," the company said in a statement.
 Commenting on the acquisition, AESL Director and CEO Aakash Chaudhry said, "Meritnation's decade long EdTech experience and leadership in live tutoring technology, will further strengthen AESL's competitive positioning not only in digital education but will also further enable its offline student offering across its 200 classroom centres, teaching over 2,50,000 students".
 Chaudhry further said the company is "continuing to evaluate several acquisition opportunities in the ed-tech space as part of our digital growth strategy, so that we can make our well-crafted student performance journey more productive". RKL DRR

Aakash Educational Services acquires Applect Learning for Rs 100 cr

<keyword id="1464841" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Edtech" source="Orion">Edtech</keyword> firm <keyword id="6384897" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BYJUs" source="Orion">BYJU's</keyword> will not be able to meet its March 2023 deadline to achieve group-level <keyword id="6515078" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="profitability" source="Orion">profitability</keyword>, as it envisioned in its earnings in October last year, reliable sources said on Monday. On top of it, its results for most of the months for the current fiscal year are delayed again. Sources told IANS that the company, which has sacked thousands of employees to date and has taken deeper cuts, is still unable to achieve profitability at group level amid mounting losses. In October after firing 2,500 employees and consolidating its business in the country, Mrinal Mohit, CEO, BYJU'S India business, had said that "these measures will help us achieve profitability in the defined time frame of March 2023". At a group level, BYJU's had said its top priority is to achieve "overall profitability by March 2023". However, this appears impossible now with the company still struggling to stem growing losses. Last week, the edtech major laid off another 15 per cent of its employees, or more than 1,000 people, mainly from its engineering teams, as the company continues phased layoffs to remain growth-oriented in a global economic meltdown. Between April-July 2022, the company logged a revenue of Rs 4,530 crore. Post that, there has been no communication from the company about the pending results. The edtech unicorn reported a loss of Rs 4,588 crore for the fiscal year that ended on March 31, 2021. BYJU's had claimed it clocked gross revenues of nearly Rs 10,000 crore in FY22. Meanwhile, according to sources, BYJU's acquisition of Delhi-based offline test preparatory services provider Aakash for nearly $1 billion is still incomplete and Aakash Chaudhry, Co-Promoter and Managing Director of Aakash Educational Services Limited (AESL), has resigned from the board. When reached, Aakash declined to comment. New reports emerged in December that BYJU's, which may have seen a definite erosion in its last market value at $22 billion, hasn't paid several of its vendors for months. According to Morning Context, "some of the payments are due since March and there is trouble with their clearance. In the eight months to October 2022, cumulative dues to vendors have crossed Rs 90 crore". When reached, BYJU's had not offered a comment on this report. In seemingly fresh trouble for BYJU's, some lenders had asked the edtech unicorn to repay part of a $1.2 billion <keyword id="6360217" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="loan" source="Orion">loan</keyword> they recently bought into as they renegotiate terms of the debt. After teaching himself how to code on the free online learning site, edX, Thumaty went on to build a number of different iOS apps, including a <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/timely-make-most-out-your/id1022562586?ls=1&amp;mt=8">new location recommendation app called Timely</a> that he launched on Thursday.He's also the cofounder of HS Hacks, one of the largest hackathons in the country. If this alliance manages to produce a low-cost solution for the health sector, like Datawind did for education segment with <keyword id="6380190" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Aakash">Aakash</keyword> tablets, then it will be an excellent opportunity for the government to again go with their solutions for government hospitals and dispensaries. 
 But first, the companies are focusing on building the Datawind App store that will be aimed at first time <keyword id="6355645" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="android">Android</keyword> users and will be available on all Datawind tablets.

The doctors said they have been observing this scene for the last 15-20 days since the cases in Delhi spiked after hitting a plateau. "We have been facing this scenario since mid-August," said Avi Kumar, Senior Consultant Pulmonology at Fortis Escorts Heart Institute in Okhla. Despite this, the majority of the influx to these hospitals have come from cities in other states. As per a rough estimate, 60-70 per cent beds have been occupied by the patients from different cities who came to Delhi for treatment. Besides, the patients are taking longer to recover, as well. "People are coming from cities like Lucknow and Varanasi for the treatment in Delhi hospitals. They are taking more than two weeks, at least for the recovery. However, many patients develop residual symptoms, and they take an additional two weeks to cope with post-Covid trauma," added Avi Kumar. "A particular set of patients are taking more time to recover. These patients have pre existing co-morbidities like uncontrolled diabetes. Many patients are on high-flow oxygen for over a month," said Akshay Budhraja, a senior pulmonologist at Aakash healthcare super speciality Hospital, Dwarka. Budhraja also said that 30 per cent of Corona patients in his hospital are severely sick and could be put on ventilator support in the coming days. "So we will not see empty beds anytime soon," he added. The situation could lead to further crisis. The daily infection of Covid-19 in the national capital, which was limited to under 1,000 for a while, have started recording more than 1,700 cases in the past seven days. On two occasions, the cases crossed the 2,000-mark as well. The doctors are alarmed by the trend and fear that if it continues, the city may face acute shortage of ICU beds again in coming days, especially for severe cases coming from the capital. "As we are heading towards a second wave of the Covid-19, things are bound to get worse from here. The economic activities have reinstated, the metro is planned to run in the coming days, and people are back to carelessness in following safety measures. In this situation, we may face the ICU beds crisis again," said Pankaj Solanki, who runs Dharamveer Solanki Hospital, a dedicated Covid facility in Rohini.
