<ul><li>Unique ID to help identify passengers and make boarding process for domestic flights simpler. </li><li>The unique ID will be biometric-based. </li><li>Vijayawada and Varanasi among the three airports where <keyword id="6549368" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="paperless-boarding">paperless boarding</keyword> will be tested. </li></ul>With the Indian Railways increasing the fare for air-conditioned coaches, many people who preferred trains to flights have now started travelling by air. Thanks to the competition between different airlines, flight ticket prices have become affordable and in many cases, even cheaper than what train journeys would cost. Why waste hours on a train when you can pay lesser and get to your destination sooner? The process of boarding and deboarding a plane, however, remains tiresome. With many ditching trains for flights now, airports have become as crowded as railway stations. Naturally, the queues for boarding passes and for security checks have become longer. But there’s some good news! The government might soon implement a new feature -- a biometric-based unique ID -- that will make the boarding process for domestic flyers smooth. A unique identification number, similar to the Aadhaar, will soon let commuters dodge the boarding processes for domestic flights. A technical team from the Airport Authority of India (AAI) along with four private metro airports where the new scheme is set to be tested, finalized a completely paperless boarding process for domestic flyers. The team has also finalized and proposed the format for biometric-based identification called “Digi-Yatra” (DY). Under the new process, each commuter will be allocated a unique ID from the aviation ministry portal. This unique ID issued will also be linked to the person’s biometrics. Passengers wishing to use the new service will then have to provide the booking site with this ID. Getting the new ID will be optional for passengers. The existing process will continue to remain in place. How do you register for <keyword id="6549964" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="digi-yatra">digi-yatra</keyword> ID? A Digi-Yatra link will be made available on the Air Sewa-II portal soon. Passengers can register there. The verification of the individuals will be done using government-issued ID proof like Aadhaar, driving licence etc.. After registration, whenever the registered person visits the airport the next time, he/she needs to carry the given ID proof and a photograph with them. Iris scans and the details will be captured at the airport. Once that’s done, you can say bye to the long queues for boarding passes. After biometric authentication of the traveller, the E-gate will open. The passenger will be able to avail all the services like check-in, security check and boarding using QR codes and biometrics. Airport websites will also be updated to accommodate the new feature after the proposal is approved by the ministry. The government has selected three airports to test the new scheme. “We have selected three airports, including Varanasi and Vijayawada, for rolling out DY,” <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/unique-id-to-enable-paperless-boarding-for-domestic-flyers/articleshow/64264988.cms">the AAI chief said.</a>

This application is said to make the entry, security checks, and boarding process paperless, quick, and uncomplicated. Passengers traveling from Terminal 3 of Delhi airport can download the DigitYatra application and register to speed up their check-in time. At Bangalore International Airport, the service is operational for all domestic terminals. Currently, no rollout schedule is announced for other airports, but <a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/industry/aviation/story/delhi-airport-launches-beta-version-of-digi-yatra-app-for-android-users-details-here-344679-2022-08-15">reports</a> suggest it will be introduced in Pune, Vijayawada, Kolkata, Hyderabad and more by March 2023. The app isn’t accessible to iPhone or iOS users as of now, but Android users can install it from the Play Store. However, it’s said to be available for iOS users soon. Delhi International Airport said it's a Biometric Enabled Seamless Travel experience based on Facial Recognition technology. It aims to provide a paperless &amp; seamless travel experience to the passengers. If you are planning to travel from any of these two airports, register with DigiYatra to avail of the benefits. Passengers traveling will be able to enter and pass all the checkpoints with face recognition which will act as proof of identity. This means only the designated person can enter, and no additional identification documents will be required to prevent physical contact. Also, with no physical documents required like a vaccine certificate, identity proof, ticket and more at security check, boarding, and check-in, this new service will reduce wait times and queues. The application will also send real-time notifications and updates. The DigiYatra platform will be a joint platform to monitor and manage flight details. DigiYatra app will use facial recognition to make airport check-ins faster - here’s how to use it

The initiative is in-line with the government’s DigiYatra scheme that aims to minimise paperwork for air travel under a digital system for airport entry and boarding flights. India’s first paperless airport Facial recognition seems to be the second most trending term in technology after artificial intelligence (AI). While a lot of airports around the world already implement paperless boarding, India is yet to take-off on this initiative. DigiYatra has already started installing their automated security system in Varanasi at the Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport where the airport director, AK Rai, has speculated that the airport will be ready go live with their services by October. In addition, the DigiYatra scheme will also extend to the Visakhapatnam airport and the Kolkata airport as well. That being said, government projects run the risk of not being on time, so there’s a high possibility that BIAL might actually be India’s first paperless boarding airport. The first phase of their roll-out will include Jet Airways, Spice Jet and Air Asia in the first quarter of 2019. If done on time, BIAL could be the first airport to have a end-to-end solution of paperless air travel.

Not only will such an airport eliminate long lines for ID verification, it will also save the effort of printing tickets and boarding passes and fishing them out at multiple checkpoints. Additionally, this will also facilitate self-bag drop and check-in, using facial recognition to identify pax and data recall. Digi Yatra will facilitate paperless travel and avoid identity check at multiple points. To accomplish this, NIA selected global technology firm <keyword id="4553387" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="icad" source="Orion">ICAD</keyword> Holding as its master system integrator (MSI) consultant and partnered with Indian IT major <keyword id="10862" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="wipro" source="Orion">Wipro</keyword> which will act as a sub-consultant to the global tech company. An MSI enables all the technical systems, with all of their disparate parts and pieces to work cohesively and work as designed, throughout its lifespan. ICAD will support NIA with the systems integration design, integration programme management and integration of ICT and airport systems. The airport project is all set to complete by December 2024, said Feroz Mehdi, director at ICAD said at the press conference. The airport will also be environment friendly with zero-emissions. It intends to maximize the use of renewable energy sources such as solar power, and implement processes for water treatment and recycling. The airport also aspires to be a ‘green airport’ as it promised to preserve all the native species. Wipro, ICAD to create India's first digital airport — here are its features

The I-T department has developed a mobile app for paying taxes and tracking refunds and is considering issuing PANs on real time basis using Aadhaar biometric. 
 "Income Tax department is considering issuing of Permanent Account Number (PAN) on a real time basis using Aadhaar's e-KYC facility. The proposal is at an initial stage of consideration," Minister of State for <keyword id="25455" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="finance">Finance</keyword> <keyword id="258592" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Santosh-Kumar-Gangwar">Santosh Kumar Gangwar</keyword> said in a written reply to the <keyword id="6355187" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lok-Sabha">Lok Sabha</keyword> today. 
 
Besides, he said a mobile app "for paying taxes online has been developed. The mobile application has the functionality to pay taxes and track refunds".

 Besides, the tax department has started online PAN application facility using digital signature certification or Aadhaar based e-signature. "Also, online paperless PAN application facility using Aadhaar based e-KYC and e-signature is available through the websites of PAN services providers NSDL eGov and UTIITSL. In this facility, Aadhaar data is used for allotment of PAN and there is no need to upload scanned copies of any document," <keyword id="388942" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="gangwar">Gangwar</keyword> said. 
 
The aadhaar-based e-KYC facility would allow individuals or entities wanting to apply for PAN to verify details such as date of birth or address by way of biometric identification using thumb impressions.

So far, more than 111 crore Aadhar numbers have been issued. The unique identification number is being used for getting a new SIM card, for opening bank accounts, transfer of subsidies and also for biometric-based digital payments under Aadhaar Enabled Payment System. 
 
As per the government estimate, every year 2.5 crore people across the country apply for PAN cards. 
 
There are more than 25 crore PAN card holders in the country.

Tax dept app to track refunds; plans issuing PAN in real time

<ul><li>The deadline for <keyword id="4596360" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="pan-aadhar-linking">PAN-Aadhar linking</keyword> has been extended to 31 March 2019. </li><li>It might have been done because the Supreme Court supported the activists’ argument to push back the deadlines. </li><li>Despite the fact that the deadline has been extended for the fifth time, only about 16.65 crore out of the 33 crore existing PANs have been linked with Aadhaar up till March this year. </li></ul> The <keyword id="121964" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Central-Board-of-Direct-Taxes">Central Board of Direct Taxes</keyword> (CBDT) has issued an order under Section 119 of the Income Tax Act, stating that the deadline for PAN-Aadhar linking has been extended to 31 March 2019. The announcement was made this Saturday night, just a few hours before the end of the previous deadline. Despite the fact that the deadline has been extended for the fifth time, only about 16.65 crore out of the 33 crore existing PANs had been linked with Aadhaar, up till March this year. The earlier deadlines for the PAN-Aadhar linking were 31 July, 31 August and 31 December 2017 followed by 31 March and 30 June of this year. India had launched Aadhaar back in 2009 and it has now become the world's biggest biometric database. Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act, 1961, which came into effect from 1 July 2017, mandated that all taxpayers having an Aadhaar card must link it with their PAN. The biometric card would also be required to file income tax returns and to get a new <keyword id="74488" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="PAN-card">PAN card</keyword>. The provision was incorporated to check tax evasion through the use of multiple PAN cards. Activists have challenged the validity of the Aadhaar law, claiming that linking their <keyword id="155319" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aadhar">Aadhar</keyword> card for various purposes put their privacy at stake and thereby, violated their fundamental Right to Privacy. They also argue that Aadhar linking leaves room for misuse of their fingerprint and iris scans. The activists had filed petitions and moved court against this law. The five judges hearing the petitions had concluded the case in May but have not yet delivered the ruling regarding whether Aadhaar should be made mandatory for welfare schemes and financial transactions, or not. CBDT said that the announcement for extending the deadline has been made after "consideration of the matter". However, it seems that it was done because the Supreme Court, which has heard several petitions against the Aadhaar law, had supported arguments to push back the deadlines before the court gives a final verdict. The meek and humble 12-digit number during the <keyword id="6355364" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="UPA">UPA</keyword> government was made to stop fraud and pilferage from India’s social welfare programmes. Move to 2017! The <keyword id="6354642" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Modi">Modi</keyword> government is gradually making it mandatory for every citizen to use our Aadhar cards from buying railway tickets, filing tax returns to marriage certificates, entrance exams mobile phone cards to banking.

Aadhar card has your iris and finger print stored in a central database. Given the not-so-strong cyber security laws in the country, you often think how safe your banking transactions are; given the fact even your telecom operator store has your Aadhar number. But then someone would just poke their nose into your business and inform that even the <keyword id="6355055" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="USA">USA</keyword> has <keyword id="6379493" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Social-Security">social security</keyword> number to keep a count on the citizens. That’s it! You need to step out in war footing and make this person understand how India’s Aadhar cannot be compared to the USA’s Social Security Number. 
 
Here’s why: 
 
Structural difference between Aadhar and SSN 
You know about Aadhar card very well. But what about the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/heres-why-linking-aadhar-to-all-servicesisnt-much-of-a-sensible-step-by-the-modi-government/articleshow/57893415.cms">USA’s Social Security Number or SSN</a>? In 1936, SSN was a 9-digit number that was used by the government to track ac citizen’s income and ensure the social benefit on the basis of the same. That’s quite much like Aadhar of ours. Gradually more government agencies and incorporates started storing the records of SSN. In 1961, just like Aadhar, the <keyword id="6555575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Internal-Revenue-Service">Internal Revenue Service</keyword> of USA started using SSN for identifying taxpayers. 
 Until then, there was no legal framework that would prevent any credit card company to judge a person basis their SSN. However in 1977, under <keyword id="6459158" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="jimmy-carter">Jimmy Carter</keyword>, the 39th President of the <keyword id="6356955" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="united-states">United States</keyword>, it was decied that SSN cannot be used as an identification document. Rather, it should only be used as a legal permit to work. 
 On the Social Security website of the USA government, under the <keyword id="4374443" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="social-security-testimony-before-congress">Social Security Testimony Before Congress</keyword>, it is clearly mentioned: “The card was never intended to serve as a personal identification document – that is, it does not establish that the person presenting the card is actually the person whose name and SSN appear on the card.” 
 
Now contrast this with our Aadhar, which is a single digital identity number and you will find that any government and private bodies may use the same as a identity card to authenticate you as an Indian citizen. Also, anyone who has stayed in India for 182 days can apply for enrolling oneself for <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/heres-why-linking-aadhar-to-all-servicesisnt-much-of-a-sensible-step-by-the-modi-government/articleshow/57893415.cms">Aadhar card</a>. However SSN is only given to the US citizens who have permit to work in the country. 
 
The process of registering people on Aadhar was executed through private enterprises known as enrollers who operated freely without any government supervision at the field level. The qualifications needed to become an enrolment agency were quite low and nobody was from a recognized name. 
 
Your biological data is stored in Aadhar 
In Aadhar, from finger print to iris, everything is stored. However in SSN, the US government didn’t collect finger prints. To support their logic, the Social Security website reads: “The use of fingerprints was associated in the public mind with criminal activity, making this approach undesirable.” SSN doesn’t even contain any photograph for that matter. In 2007, there were talks to include these details to act against terrorism, but the country who have experienced terrorist attacks in its worst form and often behave cynical on this matter actually went against it. 
 
“A biometric identifier, such as a fingerprint, can be an effective and highly accurate way to establish the identity of an individual, but it can also facilitate a much higher degree of tracking and profiling than would be appropriate for many transactions,” said Marc Rotenberg, Executive Director, Electronic Privacy Information Center a research organisation, while the hearing on the Use and Misuse of the Social Security Number before the Subcommittee on <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/heres-why-linking-aadhar-to-all-servicesisnt-much-of-a-sensible-step-by-the-modi-government/articleshow/57893415.cms">Social Security Committee </a>on Ways and Means U.S. House of Representatives. 
“The problems that will arise when biometric identifiers are compromised are severe. What will happen at the point that your biometric identifiers no longer identify you?” he added. 
 
Aadhar is linked to central database 
However SSN is never seeded. “Department of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/heres-why-linking-aadhar-to-all-servicesisnt-much-of-a-sensible-step-by-the-modi-government/articleshow/57893415.cms">Homeland Security program</a>s shall not collect or use an SSN as a unique identifier; rather, programs shall create their own unique identifiers to identify or link information concerning an individual,” reads the Privacy Policy Guidance Memorandum of the Homeland Security in the USA. 
 
SSN cannot be used openly by private companies 
 
SSN is required by private businesses on two cases:

It believes that it can bring in efficiency and transparency, as the device can record every stroke of the pen. ‘Zero data loss’ The entire process of writing and evaluation will not use paper. This solution can be extended to objective and descriptive exams as well. Their device works in sync with PEXA software ecosystem which can streamline the entire process of examination. The device records all the semester exams and tracks all the impressions on the DigiTaal while writing answers. “We conducted over 1.5 million paperless exams with zero loss of data. In the process, we helped save 20 million sheets of paper,” Srikanth Ganesan, Founder, LittleMore Innovation Labs <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/education-2/voting-has-gone-paperless-exams-should-too-srikanth-ganeshan/1658938/">told </a>Financial Express. Paperless exams at 6 institutes saved 20 million sheets of paper, and can save more

Customers will now be able to use their AADHAR cards to get their new mobile connections instantly activated, as the government has approved electronic-Know Your Customer (<keyword id="1920769" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="e-KYC">e-KYC</keyword>) rules using <keyword id="546774" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Aadhaar-cards">Aadhaar cards</keyword>. 
 
In a notification issued on Tuesday, the telecom department (DoT) said, "After successful completion of Proof of Concept to use Aadhaar e-KYC service for issuing mobile connections to subscribers, it has been decided to launch the 'Aadhaar' e-KYC service across all the Licensed Service Areas including J&amp;K, North East and Assam for issuance of mobile connections as an alternative process to the existing PoI/ PoA document based processes." 
 DoT added that customers will now be able to online authorize <keyword id="6355252" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="UIDAI">UIDAI</keyword> through Aadhaar authentication using their Aadhaar numbers and biometrics so that their demographic data and digitally signed photograph can be provided to the service provider. 
 
"As per UIDAI, digitally signed electronic KYC data provided by UIDAI is machine readable, making it possible for the Licensees to directly store it as the customer record in their database for purposes of issuing a mobile connection," the notification read. 
 
Also, service providers will be allowed to appoint or employ franchisee, agents, distributors and employees who will provide these services. 
 
"The Licensee (service providers) shall keep proper control over them and the Licensee shall be liable for the acts done by its franchisee, agents, distributors and employees in the provisioning of service," the department added. 
 
Bharti Airtel, India’s leading telco will probably roll out e-KYC using AADHAR card from this week itself, while Vodafone India and Idea Cellular, ranked 2nd and 3rd respectively, will be doing so in coming weeks. 
 
All three leading telcos had partnered with DoT so that AADHAR based e-KYC solutions can be used for verification, and also went ahead to test it successfully in four telecom circles.

At a certain point, you have to go to City Hall (or whatever other municipal office) and show some kind of identification in order to get what you want. But if you could connect a national ID database to a video service like Skype, it cuts down on pesky travel time and waiting on lines. (It's also a little scary, privacy-wise, but we'll get to that.)The idea is to associate a person's Aadhar 12-digit identification code, almost like a Social Security Number, with their Skype account.Then, when the citizen dials in a video call to a government office, the public servant on the other end knows for sure that they're talking to the right person. Permits can be issued and business can be done, without anybody having to wait in line at the local equivalent of the DMV. But it also means that Microsoft has even more knowledge of your identity than ever before. It means there are some tricky ethical and legal questions that are still going to have to be answered before this catches on in the mainstream.On the Skype end, Microsoft President Brad Smith says in that report that this is still very much early days, but that fingerprint or facial scanners could be used to make sure that nobody is stealing your Skype account, and therefore your identity. Aadhar is a voluntary program, but as of the end of January, just under a billion Indian citizens had enrolled. With a population of about 1.3 billion, that's most of India on board. If this program is a success, and it eventually comes elsewhere, it could solve a lot of headaches for anyone who's ever had to wait in line at the DMV to fill out a form or go to City Hall to pay a bill. Microsoft is testing a cool idea that could one day let you go to the DMV over Skype

Can you imagine turning one Indian village digital every day? <keyword id="6653" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="ICICI-bank">ICICI Bank</keyword> claims it will do it. 
 ICICI <keyword id="6355272" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bank">Bank</keyword>, today announced that it will transform 100 villages into Digital Villages through a number of measures. 
 
These villages will enable villagers to use digital channels for banking and payments transactions. There, villagers will be able to open bank accounts using Aadhar-based e-KYC and make cashless payments to retail stores through a unique SMS/USSD-based mobile solution. 
 Additionally, ICICI Bank in association with <keyword id="339601" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="ICICI-Foundation">ICICI Foundation</keyword> will impart vocational training to nearly 10,000 underprivileged villagers, especially women, to help them earn a sustainable livelihood. The bank will also extend credit facilities to the trained villagers in a bid to boost self-employment opportunities in the villages. 
 This ambitious move is inspired by the success of India’s first digital village, created by ICICI Bank at <keyword id="3896834" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="akodara">Akodara</keyword> in <keyword id="48360" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sabarkantha">Sabarkantha</keyword> district of Gujarat. Ms. <keyword id="45875" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chanda-Kochhar">Chanda Kochhar</keyword>, MD &amp; CEO, ICICI Bank said , “We strongly feel that technology can play an important role in putting development on a fast lane.” 
 
The bank will create a cashless ecosystem at these villages, provide vocational training to 10,000 villagers in first 100 days and offer them credit linkages so that the villagers can start their own business ventures.

All adults in the villages will have saving accounts, which will be linked to <keyword id="155319" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aadhar">Aadhar</keyword> to enable direct transfer of government benefits into these accounts. There will be dedicated branch and ATM of ICICI Bank to service these accounts. 
 
The bank will provide a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Is-your-credit-card-a-debt-sentence/articleshow/55617326.cms">unique SMS &amp; USSD based mobile service</a> which will facilitate the villagers to transfer funds, receive alerts &amp; statements and make payments to retail stores by using their mobile phones. This SMS banking will be available in regional languages and will function on basic mobile phones. The Bank will also set up end-to-end merchant infrastructure that will enable the retailers at the village to accept mobile based payments. 
 
The bank will also create a cashless, digital payment ecosystem for the predominant commercial activity of these villages and set up Point-of-Sale (POS) machines at seed and fertilizer outlets for cashless transactions using Rupay cards. 
 All this is being done in the wake of <keyword id="6362150" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="demonetization">demonetization</keyword> when the country's villages are suffering the most. As someone who saw how Akodara's citizens were reaping benefits from the digitization, this move is not only lauded but necessary right now.
