Union Minister of Labour and Employment <keyword id="19906409" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mansukh-mandaviya" source="keywords">Mansukh Mandaviya</keyword> and Chairperson of the Central Board of Trustees, EPF, have given the green light to the proposal for a Centralised <keyword id="23037839" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Pension-Payment-System" source="keywords">Pension Payment System</keyword> (<keyword id="23039389" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="CPPS" source="keywords">CPPS</keyword>) under the Employees' Pension Scheme, 1995. According to the Ministry of Labour and Employment, this initiative represents a major advancement by establishing a national-level centralised system, allowing pension disbursement through any bank or branch across India. Commenting on this development, Mandaviya stated, "The approval of the Centralised Pension Payment System (CPPS) marks a significant milestone in the modernization of the <keyword id="19966712" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="EPFO" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="EPFO" meta.hostid="83" meta.entityid="EPFO">EPFO</keyword>. By enabling pensioners to receive their pensions from any bank, any branch, anywhere in the country, this initiative addresses the long-standing challenges faced by pensioners and ensures a seamless and efficient disbursement mechanism." He added, "This is a crucial step in our ongoing efforts to transform the EPFO into a more robust, responsive, and tech-enabled organisation, committed to serving the needs of its members and pensioners better." The CPPS is expected to benefit over 7.8 million <keyword id="21992385" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="EPS-Pensioners" source="keywords">EPS pensioners</keyword> of EPFO. By leveraging advanced IT and banking technologies, it aims to provide a more efficient and user-friendly experience for pensioners. The CPPS will also ensure seamless pension disbursement across India, eliminating the need to transfer Pension Payment Orders (PPO) when a pensioner relocates or changes their bank or branch. This will be a significant relief for pensioners who move to their hometowns post-retirement. This facility will be launched on January 1, 2025, as part of EPFO's ongoing <keyword id="23015602" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IT-Modernization" source="keywords">IT modernization</keyword> project, Centralised IT Enabled System (CITES 2.01). In the following phase, CPPS will enable a smooth transition to an <keyword id="20028363" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aadhaar-based-Payment-System" source="keywords">Aadhaar-based payment system</keyword> (ABPS). The CPPS marks a significant departure from the current decentralised pension disbursement system, where each EPFO Zonal/Regional Office maintains separate agreements with only 3-4 banks. Pensioners will no longer need to visit branches for verification at the start of their pension, as it will be credited immediately upon release. Additionally, EPFO anticipates a significant reduction in disbursement costs with the new system.

The government has relaxed provisions of <keyword id="19948097" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tds" source="keywords">TDS</keyword>/<keyword id="19950203" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tcs" source="keywords">TCS</keyword> in the event of the death of the deductee/collectee before the linkage of PAN and <keyword id="19898107" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="aadhaar" source="keywords">Aadhaar</keyword> card. TDS is Tax Deducted at Source and TCS is Tax Collected at Source in India. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), has issued a circular dated August 5, in view of genuine difficulties being faced by taxpayers. Through the circular, the government said it has relaxed the provisions of TDS/TCS, as per the Income-tax Act, in the event of death of deductee/collectee before linking of PAN and Aadhaar. In order to redress the grievances of the taxpayers wherein instances have been cited, of demise of the deductee/collectee on or before May 31, 2024 and before the option to link PAN and Aadhaar could have been exercised, the circular provides that there shall be no liability on the deductor/collector to deduct/collect the tax under the relevant section of <keyword id="19936187" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="income-tax-act" source="keywords">income tax act</keyword>, pertaining to the transactions entered into up to March 31, 2024. On April 23, 2024, CBDT extended the date for linking of PAN and Aadhaar May for the taxpayers (for the transactions entered into up to March 2024) to avoid higher TDS/ TCS, as per the income tax act. Under the provisions of the Income-tax Act, 1961, every person who has been allotted a PAN as on July 1, 2017 and is eligible to obtain <keyword id="20030312" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aadhaar-Number" source="keywords">Aadhaar Number</keyword>, is required to intimate his Aadhaar to the prescribed authority, on payment of a prescribed fee. Failure to do so shall attract certain repercussions under the income tax act. As per government, the PAN of taxpayers who have failed to intimate their Aadhaar, as required, shall become inoperative and the consequences during the period that PAN remains inoperative will be as follows: 1. No refund shall be made against such PANs 2. Interest shall not be payable on such refund for the period during which PAN remains inoperative 3. TDS and TCS shall be deducted /collected at higher rate, as provided in the income tax act.

Provisions of TDS/TCS, in case of death of deductee or collectee relaxed by govt

The <keyword id="19994390" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="GST-Council" source="keywords">GST Council</keyword> on Saturday decided to tweak <keyword id="20452955" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tax-rates" source="keywords">tax rates</keyword> on items, including accommodation services for students and solar cookers, and took a host of taxpayer-friendly measures including waiver of interest and penalty for demand notices issued in the first three years of <keyword id="6354679" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="GST" source="Orion">GST</keyword> rollout. Briefing reporters after the 53rd <keyword id="3680839" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="GST-Council-meeting" source="Orion">GST Council meeting</keyword>, Finance Minister <keyword id="129243" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nirmala-Sitharaman" source="Orion">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword> said the Council has recommended to roll-out the biometric-based <keyword id="20433416" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aadhaar-authentication" source="keywords">Aadhaar authentication</keyword> of registration applicants on pan-India basis in a phased manner. This will help check fraudulent registration done to avail input tax credit and evade taxes. To reduce litigation, the Council decided to fix a monetary limit for tax officers to file appeals before the GST Appellate Tribunal, the High Court and the Supreme Court at Rs 20 lakh, Rs 1 crore and Rs 2 crore, respectively. It also recommended reduction of the quantum of pre-deposit required to be paid by taxpayers for filing of appeals under Goods and Services Tax (GST). The maximum amount of pre-deposit for filing appeal with the appellate authority has been reduced from Rs 25 crore CGST and SGST each to Rs 20 crores CGST and SGST each. This will help ease cash flow and working capital blockage for the taxpayers. "The 53rd GST Council meeting has taken a number of decisions on trade facilitation, easing compliance burden and giving relief to taxpayers in terms of easing compliance," Sitharaman said. The Minister said the next meeting of the GST Council will be held in August in which the Group of Ministers (GoM) on GST rate rationalisation under Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sumant Chaudhary, will give a presentation on the status of the work and aspects covered by the panel and work pending before the panel. "What was decided in the Council is, when we meet in the next GST Council meeting we will start a discussion on rate rationalisation... There will be a presentation by the GoM irrespective of whether the report is draft... and then Council will start the discussion on rate rationalisation in the next meeting in August," Sitharaman said. The GST Council on Saturday recommended to exempt Accommodation Services of up to Rs 20,000 per person per month from GST. This is subject to the condition that these services are supplied for a minimum continuous period of 90 days. "It's primarily meant for students," Sitharaman said. In a taxpayer friendly move, the Council has decided to waive interest and penalties for demand notices issued under Section 73 of the CGST Act (for cases not involving fraud, suppression or wilful misstatement) for the fiscal years 2017-18, 2018-19 and 2019-20, if the full tax demanded is paid by March 31, 2025. GST, which subsumed 17 local taxes and cesses, was rolled out on July 1, 2017. With its introduction, prices of various products and services used by masses have moderated. As per the CBIC data, mobile phones and many household items including TV, refrigerator, washing machine and AC have become cheaper post GST. It has reduced burden on household income and improved affordability. The Council also decided to refer the standing committee's recommendation to exempt GST on fertiliser and cut rates on raw materials to the GoM on rate rationalisation. Currently, GST is levied at 5 per cent on fertilisers, while its raw materials like sulphuric acid and ammonia face 18 per cent tax. Also the Tax Collected at Source (TCS) rate for e-commerce suppliers has been cut from present 1 per cent to 0.5 per cent, which will ease the financial burden on the suppliers making supplies through E-commerce platform. Besides, services provided by Indian Railways to the general public, namely, sale of platform tickets, facility of retiring rooms/waiting rooms, cloak room services and battery-operated car services as well as intra-railway transactions would be exempt from GST. GST Council has prescribed a uniform rate of 12 per cent on all milk cans meaning steel, iron, aluminum which are irrespective of the use. The Council also recommended a uniform GST rate of 12 per cent on all carton boxes and cases of both corrugated and non-corrugated paper or paper board, which in particular, help the apple growers of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu &amp; Kashmir. All types of Sprinklers, including fire water sprinklers, will attract 12 per cent GST. Solar Cookers, whether it has a single or dual energy source, too will attract a 12 per cent tax. The Council also decided that GST anti-profiteering provisions will have a sunset date of April 1, 2025. Current cases and investigations with regard to profiteering complaints will be handled by the Principal bench of GST Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT), instead of the Competition Commission of India (CCI). Also, the time limit to avail input tax credit w.r.t. any invoice or debit note through any GSTR 3B return filed up to November 30, 2021 for FY 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21, has been fixed at November 30, 2021. Sitharaman said less than two per cent of the total 58.62 lakh taxpayers under Central GST administration has been sent tax notices and the intention of the government is to make GST assessees life easier by reducing compliance requirements. "I want to reassure the assessees that our intent is to make GST assessees life easier, we are working towards less and less compliance. On behalf of the CGST, notices are not being sent left, right and centre. Only 1.96 per cent of all active tax assessees have been sent notices from Central GST," Sitharaman said.

While a majority of the authentications transaction numbers were carried out by using biometric fingerprint, it is followed by demographic and OTP authentications, official sources said. Adoption of e-KYC has also significantly reduced customer acquisition cost of entities like financial institutions, telecom service providers and others, they added. "Having an ID verification means that the individual's government-issued ID is verified by one of LinkedIn's verification partners," Ashutosh Gupta, Country Manager at <keyword id="278010" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="linkedin-india" source="Orion">LinkedIn India</keyword>, said in a blogpost on Wednesday. In <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>, HyperVerge, a third-party identity verification service which uses DigiLocker -- an online wallet for Indian government-issued IDs like the <keyword id="6356006" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="aadhaar-card" source="Orion">Aadhaar Card</keyword> -- handles ID verification. The ID verification is available for users with a valid Aadhaar number and an Indian phone number. "On LinkedIn, when you show that you're the real you, you'll have an even greater chance of finding the professional opportunities that matter to you and your community," Gupta said. He further mentioned that the platform does not have access to any sensitive data from the member's Aadhaar. "If you don't have an Aadhaar, you can still verify other information for use on LinkedIn using different methods. You can choose to verify through your work email, or workplace credentials," he added. In April, the company launched the ID verification in the US and plans to roll out this feature to other regions soon. LinkedIn introduces ID Verification feature for Indian users

Around 70% of UPI's current users hail from beyond Tier-1 cities. Also, more than 80% of new users emerge from locations in Tier-2 cities and beyond, according to the ‘Impact of DPI on the Indian Internet Economy’ report by Redseer Strategy Consultants. With a user base exceeding 350 million, UPI stands out as an incredibly successful digital asset, revolutionising India's transaction landscape. Currently, approximately 45% of all transactions within the country occur digitally, with UPI commanding a significant share of 52%, surpassing 10 billion monthly transactions. The convenience associated with UPI <keyword id="6359540" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="payments" source="Orion">payments</keyword> has spurred the development of an expansive network of merchants, the digitalization of operations, and a noteworthy shift in consumer preferences. Aadhaar, the game changer Aadhaar's seamless digital ID verification has significantly enhanced governance effectiveness, leading to substantial cost savings for the government. By reinforcing the direct benefit transfer framework and policies, Aadhaar facilitated the Government of India in extending support to over 900 million beneficiaries, totaling $400 billion in cash and in-kind benefits across 313 schemes. The elimination of fraudulent or duplicate IDs resulted in an estimated government savings of approximately $34 billion. “Additionally, Aadhaar-based eKYC procedures streamlined processes such as bank account openings, issuance of credit cards, and filing of income tax returns, digitising various facets of government-citizen interactions,” says the report. Digilocker and FastTag gain users as they mature The success of Aadhaar, eKYC, and UPI have paved the way for various other Digital Public Infrastructures (DPIs) and the evolution of India Stack. Among these, platforms like DigiLocker and FasTag have matured considerably and amassed substantial user bases. The ongoing expansion of these initiatives has led to the development of innovative products and applications, exploring new use cases. For instance, DigiLocker facilitates KYC/ID verification and dynamic linking of insurance and health records, while FasTag enables parking fee payments using its balance, among other functionalities. The government has amplified the DigiLocker framework through DigiLocker 2.0, aiming to streamline the Know-Your-Customer (KYC) process across various financial and alternative services. This initiative revolves around centralising the process, eliminating redundant procedures at different touchpoints. “Embracing an enterprise-level approach for MSMEs, trusts, and other entities will enable companies to alter documents, changes of which will be reflected in personal DigiLocker accounts achieving high interoperability,” says the report. Furthermore, DigiLocker has broadened its document coverage, and includes banking, financial services, and education, through collaborations with private sector entities.

Apply for higher pension under EPF The deadline for applying for a higher EPF pension is June 26. Subscribers to the Employee Provident Fund (EPF) can now contribute more towards their pension beyond the salary limit of ₹15,000 per month. Both the employee and the employer can jointly request the EPFO to deduct 8.33% of the higher monthly basic salary. This allows for a larger accumulation towards the pension fund over the course of their working years. Bank locker agreement The <keyword id="6354335" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india" source="Orion">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> (RBI) has set a new deadline for banks to update their locker agreements. It is required for banks to prepare the locker agreement on stamp paper, with the banks being responsible for providing the stamp paper at no cost to the customers. The revised agreement is designed to protect the interests of locker holders, by promoting transparency and providing clear information on the terms and conditions governing the use of the locker facility. By December 31, 2023, banks are mandated to complete the phased renewal of these agreements. The RBI expects banks to achieve 50% enrollment by June 30, and 75% enrollment by September 30. If you have received a message from your bank, you need to complete the formalities as soon as possible. Payment of advance tax In India, salaried individuals, self-employed professionals and businesses whose estimated tax liability for the financial year exceeds ₹10,000 are required to pay advance tax in installments during the year. If you are a salaried employee, the employer will deduct the required taxes and you do not need to pay advance tax if you do not have any other source of income. Advance tax has to be paid in four installments, the first installment of 15%, needs to be paid by June 15. Mutual fund, trading and demat account nomination deadline This is not in June. As per regulatory guidelines, investors are required to mention nominees for their fund folios or notify the fund house of their decision to opt out of nominations by September 30. This ensures that appropriate arrangements are in place for the transfer of assets in case of the investor's demise, and thus it is important. The earlier deadline was 31 March. The deadline for mentioning nominees for trading and demat accounts is also September 30. According to a report by Malayala Manorama, the data has been leaked through the CoWIN portal that was designed to help citizens book their vaccine slots. As per the report, all you need to do is enter the phone number of a person who has received the Covid-19 vaccine on a Telegram bot and it will fetch important details about the user. This, as per the report, has put important data such as Aadhaar, PAN, voter ID and passport of thousands of users at risk. Covid-19 vaccination data reportedly leaked – ID proof, date of birth and other details available on Telegram

The <keyword id="20163832" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="society-of-indian-automobile" source="keywords">Society of Indian Automobile</keyword> Manufacturers (<keyword id="108827" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="siam" source="Orion">SIAM</keyword>) and big auto players have hailed the Cabinet decision of PM e-DRIVE schemes aimed at promoting electric mobility across the country. The Rs 10,900 crore scheme will support 2,479,000 electric 2-wheelers, 316,000 electric 3-wheelers and 14,028 electric buses, along with 88,500 <keyword id="186291" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ev" source="Orion">EV</keyword> charging sites. Shailesh Chandra, President of SIAM and Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd &amp; Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd, expressed strong support for the government's forward-thinking initiative. Chandra said, "This forward-thinking initiative reflects the Government's unwavering support for <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword>'s transition to electric mobility, fostering innovation and investment within the sector. The Union Cabinet, on Wednesday, cleared the 'PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM e-DRIVE) Scheme,' with a total outlay of Rs 10,900 crore over two years. It includes Rs 3,679 crore in subsidies and demand incentives for e-2Ws, e-3Ws, e-ambulances, e-trucks, and other emerging electric vehicles. It is expected to support the deployment of 24.79 lakh e-2Ws, 3.16 lakh e-3Ws, and 14,028 e-buses, providing a significant push to India's EV ecosystem. A critical aspect of the scheme is the introduction of e-vouchers for EV buyers. At the time of purchase, an Aadhaar-authenticated e-voucher will be generated, which will enable buyers to avail of demand incentives. Additionally, the scheme allocates Rs 500 crore for the deployment of e-ambulances, marking a new initiative to integrate electric vehicles into essential public services. Another Rs 4,391 crore has been earmarked for the procurement of 14,028 e-buses, with a demand aggregation process led by CESL in nine major cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore. Intercity and interstate e-buses will also be supported in consultation with states. Furthermore, Rs 500 crore has been set aside to incentivize the adoption of e-trucks, a critical move given that trucks are one of the largest contributors to air pollution. The scheme encourages those with a scrapping certificate from <keyword id="19897457" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ministry-of-road-transport" source="keywords">Ministry of Road Transport</keyword> and Highways-approved (MoRTH) vehicle scrapping centres to participate in this transition. With an allocation of Rs 2,000 crore, the scheme will support the installation of 22,100 fast chargers for four-wheelers, 1,800 fast chargers for e-buses, and 48,400 fast chargers for two- and three-wheelers. These chargers will be installed in cities with high EV penetration and along selected highways, making long-distance EV travel more viable.
