And, while participating in the world’s largest biometric database is now voluntary to a certain extent, millions of citizens have already enrolled and submitted their authentication details to third parties. That being said, the supreme court has directed <keyword id="6379816" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="telecom-operators">telecom operators</keyword> and banks to delete the biometric data that they had collected from their customers so far. It even cited the Department of Telecom’s (DoT) circular on the re-verification of phone numbers with Aadhaar details as unconstitutional.

 Sections struck down The SC removed three sections from the Aadhar Act. Section 33 (2) allowed data to be disclosed in the interest of national security. The government or allied institutions could obtain an individual’s biometric data if they were a suspected as threats. The removal of this section means that are no exceptions to individuals not being forced to disclose their authentication data, which includes their Aadhaar biometrics. Section 47 was a cause of concern because any Aadhaar data breach would only be recognised as a criminal offence if reported by an officer at the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). With this section off the Aadhaar Act, even individuals have the power to register criminal offences under the legislation. The removal of Section 57 will probably have the impact on day to day life with it no longer being ‘mandatory’ for citizens to share their data with any third-party. Aadhaar is still a valid form of identification, but it’s no longer a prerequisite to obtaining third-party services. Basically, any body, corporate or person is no longer allowed to establish the identity of an individual. In a breath of relief for parents, schools can’t ask for Aadhaar card authentication either. NET, CBSE, and UGC applications no longer need it to appear for their respective examinations. This comes in after NET has been implementing mandatory Aadhaar details, without which the application process wouldn’t be validated. Children will also be exempted from needing a Aadhaar card on all fronts. Public sector schemes will remain accessible to them even without a card. The experts and public seem divided on their opinion about these changes. While some think that it’s a step in the right direction, others believe that the dilution of the Aadhaar Act won’t address its underlying problems of privacy.

Generic Aadhaar was founded by the Thane kid, Arjun Deshpande, in April 2019, when he was 16. It supplies quality generic drugs from reputed manufacturers at up to 80 per cent lesser cost and other medicines 20-30 per cent cheaper. The boy, an alumni of DAV Public School, Thane, began his entrepreneurial journey with the aim of bringing affordable medicines to the poor, a statement issued by his PR agency said on Thursday. It did not disclose how much Tata has invested. The chairman emeritus of Tata Sons has so far invested in over a dozen start-ups since he retired from the group in December 2012 and all his investments are routed through his investment company RNT Associates. Some of his investments include Ola, Paytm, Snapdeal, CureFit, Urban Ladder and Avanti Finance. Generic Aadhaar sources generic drugs directly from manufacturers and sells it to retailers, eliminating 16-20 per cent wholesaler margins. The start-up boasts of an annual revenue of Rs 6 crore and is looking at a revenue of Rs 150-200 crore in the next three years, the statement said. It also claimed to have employed about 55 persons, including pharmacists, IT engineers and marketing professionals. Deshpande plans to partner with 1,000 pharmacies on a franchisee-based model and expand his reach to Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Andhra, Delhi, Goa and Rajasthan. Generic Aadhaar will provide all the support to the unorganised sector by bringing the right technology, IT infrastructure and branding to the forefront. "Our business model gives us an edge over others as we aim to bring affordable healthcare to millions. Our mission is to provide senior citizens and pensioner the care they deserve by delivering inexpensive medicines," says Deshpande. The biometric unique identification card, or ‘Aadhar card’, is slowly becoming mandatory for most of the online transactions. 
 India’s push for <keyword id="144117" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="AADHAAR">Aadhaar</keyword>, even as it is being questioned for its security, is widely appreciated by the <keyword id="6354424" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="World-Bank">World Bank</keyword> as it's best to develop one standardized system so people can carry their IDs wherever they go in the world. 
 
Paul Romer, chief economist at the World Bank, told <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/politics/articles/2017-03-15/india-id-program-wins-world-bank-praise-amid-big-brother-fears">Bloomberg</a>, “The system in India is the most sophisticated that I've seen. It's the basis for all kinds of connections that involve things like financial transactions. It could be good for the world if this became widely adopted." 
 
From healthcare services to booking a railway ticket, Aadhar is crucial for these services. Aadhar has also given legal identities to Indians who can't prove who they are. 
 
The United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals aim to provide legal IDs to all by 2030, triggering the creation of a range of platforms that offer basic rights to citizens of poorer countries while allowing those in the advanced world granular control over their digital data, such as school or medical records, and streamlining immigration. 
 “Other governments are already interested in its potential. Countries such as Tanzania, Afghanistan and Bangladesh have visited India to talk about the system,” <keyword id="44604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nandan-Nilekani">Nandan Nilekani</keyword>, billionaire co-founder of the technology company Infosys Ltd. and former chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India, who created Aadhaar, told Bloomberg. 
 
Russia, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia have also indicated their interest in Aadhaar, R.S. Sharma, chairman of the telecom regulatory authority of India, told the Mint newspaper in July 2016. 
 
However, many sections have criticized it, saying it violated national security and kept citizens under a constant watch. Before storming to power, Modi had opposed Aadhaar. Now he counts it as a key part of his push to move India towards cashless transactions and save money on the payment of social security benefits. 
 
"Centralized databases, even if the information contained therein on any one individual is kept to a minimum, pose a risk," Dakota Gruener, executive director at ID2020, a public-private partnership that aims to create digital IDs for refugees, told Bloomberg. 
 
There has been no incident of misuse of Aadhaar biometrics leading to identity theft and financial loss during the last five years, the issuing authority said in a statement on March 5, in response to a spate of news reports about breaches. 
However in a briefing it said it had shut 12 private websites and 12 mobile applications and was on the verge of closing 26 more for illegally obtaining Aadhaar numbers or enrollment details. 
 
Aadhaar is designed on the principle of "optimal ignorance," said Nilekani. While Aadhaar knows you're using the system to identify yourself on Skype, for example, it's never privy to the details of the call. Microsoft says it deletes all Aadhaar data once the call has been disconnected. 
 
The problem is not so much with Aadhaar, said Romer, who founded a technology company in 2000, but with the many private firms collecting large amounts of data about people. 
 
"It should be part of the policy of the government to give individuals some control over the data that the private firms collect and some control over how that data is used," he said. 
 
 
Here’s how Aadhar works: 
1. A unique 12-digit number is assigned to Indian residents and their details are stored in a central database. 
2. If you want to open a bank account or buy a mobile SIM card, you have to provide your Aadhaar number and place their finger on a scanner. This action permits the bank or utility to ask the Aadhaar database to verify their credentials. This eliminates providing documents for proof of identification.

He also has money invested in silver and gold jewellery. </li></ul> A man from a nondescript village in Jharkhand, India, managed to dupe over a hundred thousand people of as many rupees by executing an elaborate <keyword id="3271695" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="vishing">vishing</keyword> (voice <keyword id="6359049" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="phishing">phishing</keyword>) racket. Vishing is a kind of fraud wherein a person posing to be from a reputable organisation calls you and asks you for your personal bank details, and uses that information for dubious purposes. This is exactly what your bank is warning you against when it sends you emails and texts announcing that bank employees will never ask for personal details. 35-year-old Ram Kumar Mandal recruited and trained around 200 people from Karmatar village, near the Jharkhand-West Bengal border, to pose as bank executives who would call their targets under various pretexts and essentially get them to reveal their personal bank details, including their credit/bank account number, CVV number, card expiry date, secure password, ATM pin, internet banking details and password, and even the one-time-password (OTP) customers get to validate transactions. Some of the sneaky pretexts these ‘executives’ gave included their desire to ‘help’ the customer reactivate their account or card, redeem their reward points and even to link their bank accounts to their Aadhar cards, India’s new unique identification system for citizens. Once the crooks got their targets to divulge this information they used it to make online transactions. The calls were made to people all over the country, including metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Goa. Cops got wind of the racket while investigating a case registered at Delhi’s Anand Vihar police station by a woman who alleged that someone had syphoned off ₹1.9 lakh from her bank account. The woman told the police that someone claiming to be an RBI official offered to help her link her Aadhaar card and asked her to divulge her OTP. Promptly after she revealed the number, she realised the money had been transferred to an <keyword id="6356915" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="e-wallet">e-wallet</keyword>. “A team led by DCP Nupur Prasad was formed to track the source from where the e-wallet was being operated. One group was tasked with finding the location from where the e-wallet was being accessed, while others were trying to trace the operator,” Ravindra Yadav, joint commissioner, eastern range told the <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/delhi/empire-built-through-stolen-passwords/articleshow/64310443.cms">Times of India</a>. The police also said that Mandal’s gang had been operating with the help of the militant Maoist groups for the past four years. Upon finding accounts to which an e-wallet was linked, cops managed to block the account and get ₹40,000 back in the woman’s account as the e-wallet company had a provision of reverting a transaction within 24 hours of a case being reported. Cops said that the rest of the amount was used to pay an electric company. The owner of the wallet account, Surendra Singh who was detained by the cops further revealed that money was transferred to the e-wallet by a man called Shabir Ali, who lives in his neighbourhood. Singh would collect cash from his customers and pay their bills through the e-wallet and Ali would later take the cash from Singh after paying a 5% commission. Apparently, Ali would then deposit this cash into his bank account and then transfer the amount to someone called Mukesh through his e-wallet account and this account was also accessed by the kingpin Mandal, who happens to be a school dropout trained in cellphone repairing. This elaborate and confusing trail is what kept Mandal from getting caught all this while, especially because none of these accounts was his own. Mandal, the mastermind behind this plot, used the money to pay his ‘recruitees’ and buy electronic products online. Mandal was so sharp that even the products he bought with the swindled money were not delivered to his home. Instead, they would be delivered to the homes of people who rented houses from his relatives in Delhi and Mumbai. According to the police, Mandal owns 20 bank accounts that had ₹3,00,000 ($4426) in them transferred from the e-wallets. He also has money invested in silver and gold jewellery.

A school dropout from a village in India executed one of the biggest bank frauds in the country

The <keyword id="69419" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Central-Board-of-Secondary-Education">Central Board of Secondary Education</keyword> (CBSE) is restructuring the <keyword id="10645908" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="affiliation-system">affiliation system</keyword> for schools and making the process completely digital and based on <keyword id="771372" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="data-analytics">data analytics</keyword> with least human intervention, officials said. The <keyword id="1254364" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-system">new system</keyword>, which will come into effect from March 1, has been restructured as per <keyword id="10645907" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="various-recommendations">various recommendations</keyword> for systemic reforms laid down in the new <keyword id="361871" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Education-Policy">National Education Policy</keyword> (NEP). "The board is restructuring the affiliation system and process as per recommendations of education reforms in the NEP. Although, the CBSE affiliation system has been online since 2006, the restructured system will be completely digital and based on data analytics with least human intervention," CBSE Secretary Anurag Tripathi said. "The restructuring will help in establishing ease of doing business in the CBSE affiliation system, attaining the goal of minimum government, maximum governance, automated and data driven decisions, achieve transparency, bring more accountability in the entire systemic processes and achieve quick and time-bound disposal of all applications," he added. Tripathi said the board will soon come out with detailed guidelines on the restructured system. "A detailed document on the CBSE affiliation system containing the restructured online procedure for affiliation, documents required for affiliation application, modalities and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for inspection, guidelines for the inspection committee, videos for various process, will be released soon," he said. The board has also revised timelines for application process as per the restructured system. As per the revised timeline, every year the application window for fresh affiliation and upgradation of affiliation will open three times -March 1 to 31, June 1 to 30 and September 1 to 30. "The application for extension of affiliation will be accepted from March 1 to May 31 every year. Other applications such as those for additional subject, section increase, change of name of school, change of society or trust, will be accepted through the year," Tripathi said. Procuring digital signatures of a school from authorised service provider or AADHAAR-based signatures; uploading mandatory documents such as no objection certificate, land certificate, safety certificate and certificate by district education officer, are among the prerequisites for application for affiliation. "After the online submission of application, details submitted by the school will be analysed in accordance with the CBSE by-laws and inspection committee will be constituted immediately for the purpose of inspection. Schools will be able to get inspection done on any of the dates mentioned in the letter," he said. The CBSE had introduced a facility for virtual inspection of schools for upgradation of affiliation in August last year in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. The board is also in the process of setting up a facilitation centre to address queries, and problems of schools and inspection committees related to the virtual inspection. The board had revamped its norms in 2018 for granting affiliation to schools, leaving the onus of the infrastructural audit on states and limiting its own role to academic quality monitoring. The CBSE has 24,930 schools affiliated to it across the country and abroad, with over 2 crore students and more than 10 lakh teachers. The affiliation by-laws were formulated in the year 1998. CBSE restructures affiliation system; process to be completely digital with least human intervention

The board <keyword id="6359161" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="exams">exams</keyword> of Class 12 were to begin from April 23 and of Class 10 from April 30. "Given the current COVID-19 situation in <keyword id="13126" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maharashtra">Maharashtra</keyword>, we've postponed state board exams for class 10th &amp; 12th. The present circumstances are not conducive for holding exams. Your health is our priority," state School Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad tweeted. "Keeping in mind the schedule of entrance exams for professional courses, class 12th exams will be held by end of May, while 10th standard exams will be in June," she said in a series of tweets. The health situation was being closely monitored and fresh dates for the postponed exams would be announced soon, Gaikwad said. The decision is the outcome of consultations with various stakeholders, like students, teachers, parents, elected representatives from across parties, academicians and tech giants, the minister said. "We'll also be writing to the <keyword id="6356155" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="cbse">CBSE</keyword>, ICSE, IB, Cambridge boards, requesting them to reconsider their exams dates," she said.
