And, while participating in the world’s largest biometric database is now voluntary to a certain extent, millions of citizens have already enrolled and submitted their authentication details to third parties. That being said, the supreme court has directed <keyword id="6379816" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="telecom-operators">telecom operators</keyword> and banks to delete the biometric data that they had collected from their customers so far. It even cited the Department of Telecom’s (DoT) circular on the re-verification of phone numbers with Aadhaar details as unconstitutional.

 Sections struck down The SC removed three sections from the Aadhar Act. Section 33 (2) allowed data to be disclosed in the interest of national security. The government or allied institutions could obtain an individual’s biometric data if they were a suspected as threats. The removal of this section means that are no exceptions to individuals not being forced to disclose their authentication data, which includes their Aadhaar biometrics. Section 47 was a cause of concern because any Aadhaar data breach would only be recognised as a criminal offence if reported by an officer at the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). With this section off the Aadhaar Act, even individuals have the power to register criminal offences under the legislation. The removal of Section 57 will probably have the impact on day to day life with it no longer being ‘mandatory’ for citizens to share their data with any third-party. Aadhaar is still a valid form of identification, but it’s no longer a prerequisite to obtaining third-party services. The experts and public seem divided on their opinion about these changes. While some think that it’s a step in the right direction, others believe that the dilution of the Aadhaar Act won’t address its underlying problems of privacy.

"Keeping in mind the schedule of entrance exams for professional courses, class 12th exams will be held by end of May, while 10th standard exams will be in June," she said in a series of tweets. The health situation was being closely monitored and fresh dates for the postponed exams would be announced soon, Gaikwad said. The decision is the outcome of consultations with various stakeholders, like students, teachers, parents, elected representatives from across parties, academicians and tech giants, the minister said. Social media is abuzz; most television channels are debating a law enacted by the British – under Thomas Macaulay in 1870s—that allows for imprisonment for “words, either spoken or written, or by signs, or by visible representation, or otherwise, brings or attempts to bring into hatred or contempt, or excites or attempts to excite disaffection towards the <keyword id="26362" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Government">government</keyword>". News reports alleged that charges against Kumar and others were based on a doctored video, a charge that the Delhi police has ruled out with its move today. The incident shot Kumar—who is aligned with a left-wing outfit-- to fame and gave him political stage to voice his views to a larger audience. He is a staunch critic of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his government and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The country’s polarized media has positioned itself with or against Kumar based on their ideological positions and the topic is hogging prime-time debates. The politics aside, the provision to arrest a person for <keyword id="6364658" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="sedition">sedition</keyword> is a law that has criticized at the highest levels in <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> for over five decades now. When the British used the law as a tool to suppress rebellion in India, Mahatma Gandhi, who was charged with sedition, famously said the law was "designed to suppress the liberty of the citizen". In 1951, the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru described the law as "highly objectionable and obnoxious". In 1962, the Supreme Court imposed limits on the use of the law, making incitement to violence a necessary condition. The law itself put to a review as late as last year but the enforcement agencies have been keen time and again to use an archaic law to put down any kind of dissent. It’s 2019 and no political party in the country has made any real difference by doing away with a law that has repeatedly been used to stifle political opposition, despicably at times.

The government said from the upcoming academic session, all monetary transactions should be done using digital mode. The <keyword id="51613" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="hrd-ministry">HRD Ministry</keyword> has asked the <keyword id="56459" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="University-Grants-Commission">University Grants Commission</keyword> (UGC) to issue necessary advisory to all higher educational institutions. "All receipts and payments related to the functioning of the institutions including student fees, exam fees, vendor payments and salary/wage payments shall be made 'only' through online or digital modes," the directive sent to university heads said. "For all students' service in the hostels, digital mode should be used for all transactions. All canteens and business establishments on the campus may be encouraged to resort to only digital modes for their receipts and payments using the BHIM app by linking their bank accounts with Aadhaar," it added. The varsities have been asked to identify all transactions being carried out in cash currently and find ways for replacing them with digital modes. The government has also asked the varsities to appoint a nodal officer for the purpose and send a monthly report to the UGC.
