But it turned out to be short lived as it has been removed from Google Playstore for violating its spam and multiple functionality policy, according to <a href="https://gadgets.ndtv.com/social-networking/news/mitron-app-pulled-from-the-google-play-store-for-violating-spam-policies-2239329">reports.</a> While it gained attention for being India’s answer to TikTok and for using PM Modi’s favourite word – Mitron, the app had also drawn attention soon after that as the original source code was bought from Pakistani software developing company Qboxus. “The source code of TicTic is available on CodeCanyon for only $34. The developer just changed the package name, brand name, splash screen, and some strings,” said Qboxus. The security of the app had also been questioned. “It’s risky to use <keyword id="9295797" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="mitron-app">Mitron app</keyword> given it doesn’t have any additional firewall or software security on top of the source code. We build apps mostly keeping in mind of our customer needs. Since our target market does not have enough budget so mostly invest on cloning the features instead of investing on security and other things. And also our buyers expect an easy approach and they can be easily deployable. Also keep in mind that we are selling it merely for $34. So you cannot expect it fills all the ingredients of the original app. And only 2 out of 100 customers ask us regarding security. Most are more concerned with cloning and other app features,” Sheikh told Business Insider. With over a billion people in the country, it's always been difficult to gauge the public's mood in <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>, as far as elections are concerned. Take the 2014 elections for instance. While everyone had an inkling that the BJP would take the cake, no one expected the sweeping victory the party pulled off. But what if you could marry voting with one of the fastest growing sectors in the country? Would that help gauge the public's reactions better? An app called Neta aims to do just that. Created by Pratham Mittal, a Wharton alumnus, the app lets you "review" politicians, just like you do Uber drivers. The idea is to create a ‘Zomato of politicians’. Mittal argues that ratings on apps like Zomato and Yelp are major drivers for service quality in a restaurant, just like Uber drivers care about the rating you give to them. So, why shouldn't politicians? Mittal and his team have created a database of constituencies in the country, including the politicians who are competing from these places. After signing up, users can find their constituency using the pin code and cast a vote for a neta (Hindi for politician). While this is not an official vote, it helps gauge what users in a particular area think of their leaders. The votes can be changed at will, which means if a politician isn't performing after an election, the public can change their vote.

The votes are displayed in the form of a leaderboard, that ranks politicians based on the votes they receive. There's also a separate area for discussions and polls. The app allows users to run polls and add issues in their area. That gets even more feedback from users, providing better insight into what's happening on the ground. In the 2014 elections, 540 million Indians voted in the central elections. That was 66.4% of the electorate, up 8.4% from the 58% turnout in the 2009 elections. Yet, India doesn't have an easy method to gauge the public's mood. Once the app is launched across the country, Mittal says he can take the data to political parties and sell it to them. His app has 100,000 downloads on the Play Store right now, most of which were acquired during the recent Karnataka elections. It can also be accessed through the web, while Mittal's team also sends mass WhatsApp messages to people and makes IVR-driven calls to get votes from users. In fact, Mittal claims that through the data in his app, he was able to predict the eventually hung assembly beforehand. He says he has received over 2.5 million votes on the platform so far, despite only being in Ajmer, Alwar and Karnataka. Fake votes While that's an impressive number, there seems to be a very real chance of fake votes being cast. To battle that, the app takes the user's phone number when signing up. It uses this to tap into telecom operators' databases and get your name. It then tallies this to voter databases and decides which constituency you belong to. There's also Aadhaar. Since most numbers today are being attached to Aadhaar cards, the app taps into the UIDAI's APIs to verify users using their Aadhaar numbers. It doesn't actually see your Aadhaar number here but uses the mobile number and name to verify what constituency you belong to. Mittal says that his app will still have a 4% margin for error, but argues that this margin won't matter when it's reaching millions of users. What's the end game? While Mittal's goal is to make his app a watchdog, he has business opportunities in the analytics he can sell to political parties. But more importantly, he wants to sell this data to media outlets, making him a direct competitor to election research firms like Cvoter, Today's Chanakya and more. Further, Mittal says that he can also access user data if he wants to, but he's wary of doing so in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal. He says he can extrapolate caste and religion from a person's name, while data about birth and some other information can be obtained from the election commission. Having started less than six months ago, this is a long-term plan. The app is yet to launch in all cities, though databases are being built for all of them. The hook here is in transparency, the fact that the votes come from real users. Mittal’s users aren’t obtained from Facebook ads alone, he says he sends real people down to villages etc. to put the app directly on people’s phones.

This app lets you 'review' politicians in India

The Chief Ministers' panel on digital payments has asked government to roll out from December 25 a more user friendly version of USSD or *99#, which is used on feature mobile phones for making cashless payments as cash crunch due to demonetisation continues, as per an agency news report. 
 
"Upgraded version of USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) should be rolled out by December 25, 2016," suggested the panel on adoption of digital payments in its recommendation submitted to the Finance Ministry. 
 
According to an official statement today, the panel, whose convener is Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, has suggested that the procedure for simplified Know Your Customer (KYC) using Aadhaar needs to be adopted. 
 
The second meeting of the committee was held on Friday at NITI Aayog. 
 
The meeting followed the deliberations held by Naidu, Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog Arvind Panagariya with the Governor and senior management of RBI and CMDs of major private and public sector banks on Thursday in Mumbai. 
 
The Maharashtra government informed the meeting that it was introducing an Aadhaar Bill in the legislative assembly to give legal status to the use of Aadhaar number for various purposes. 
 
It also informed that it had launched a major campaign to promote digital transactions. 
 
Madhya Pradesh reported that it had initiated a major programme to digitise the transactions in state-owned mundies. 
 
Odisha pointed out that the state was deficient in financial infrastructure including bank branches, bank correspondent, Internpenetration and mobile phones. 
 
While noting that RBI and banks are largely supportive of the measures to promote digital transactions, the panel suggested steps including easing the digital payment operations at the level of merchant. 
 
It said that UIDAI would shortly roll out the common Android-based Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AEPS) application developed in collaboration with TCS that can be downloaded by the merchants. 
 
In order to use this application for carrying out cashless transactions, merchants will need a smartphone and a fingerprint scanner. 
 
Transactions on this application can be done without any card or PIN. The application would be made available to all banks and the banks would encourage merchants in their vicinity to adopt this application, it said. 
 
The panel suggested that RBI should allow authentication through iris scanner and One Time Password (OTP) for AEPS and there should be no charge on AEPS transactions.

Money at Your Fingertips Aadhaar Pay is the merchant version of the Aadhaar Enabled Payment System. Merchants using Aadhaar Pay would be able to receive payments from customers just with their fingerprint. With this app, even people who do not have cards, mobiles or e-wallets would be able to make digital payments. This would boost financial inclusion and increase the tax base. Simpler payment practices will ease the effort currently involved in making transactions. Moreover, it would become easier for small businesses to apply for loans and for <keyword id="2461546" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="FinTech">fintech</keyword> lenders to tie loan repayments to payment receipts.

 It was encouraging to see the rapid adoption of the <keyword id="1461878" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bhim">BHIM</keyword> app. In roughly a month, this digital payment app has been downloaded by almost 125 lakh people. The <keyword id="25455" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="finance">Finance</keyword> Minister announced two new schemes related to this – one providing cashback to merchants using BHIM and the other as a referral bonus to consumers recommending the app. As more merchants are encouraged to use BHIM and consumers play a role in spreading awareness of the app, more transactions will become digitalized. 
 
Building the Infrastructure 
Without infrastructural support, no amount of incentives can cause change. In recognition of this, banks have been asked to launch 1 million new PoS (point-of-sale) terminals by March and 2 million Aadhaar-based PoS terminals by September. Apart from banks, post offices and fair price shops will be promoting cashless transactions, taking digital payments to the grassroots. 
 
All duties have been waived for manufacturers of PoS devices, fingerprint readers, iris scanners and other biometric payment devices. Additionally, ₹10,000 crores have been allocated to Bharat Net, a project that is taking high-speed broadband to Gram Panchayats in India. 
 
All these strategically-designed measures would strengthen the resilience of India’s digital economy. The ramp in digital payments would not only increase the tax base but would help small business secure more loans for their working capital needs. Fintech companies would have the needed information to approve loans even faster and offer a variety of financial products based on frequency and type of receipts.

Discouraging Cash 
While encouraging digital transactions, Budget 2017-18 simultaneously discourages cash transactions. Transactions above ₹3 lakhs are no longer permitted to be made in cash. 
 
The Finance Minister announced a reduction of presumptive tax for SMEs with the annual turnover of up to ₹2 crores, from 8% to 6%. However, this reduction is valid only for receipts by non-cash means.

Moving Online The seriousness of the government to take everything online is quite evident, from the <keyword id="6360345" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="FIPB">FIPB</keyword> (<keyword id="62529" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Foreign-Investment-Promotion-Board">Foreign Investment Promotion Board</keyword>) permitting the e-filing of FDI applications to the withdrawal of service charge on e-tickets booked through IRCTC. GST, which the Finance Minister announced would be implemented as per schedule, would allow registration and payment online. 
 
<keyword id="4160201" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="advantage-digital-india">Advantage Digital India</keyword> 
The government is targeting over ₹2,500 crore digital transactions for FY18 through BHIM Aadhaar Pay, IMPS and debit cards. The importance of the success of digitalization can be sensed by the tax figures released. Of 4.2 crore people in the organized sector, only 1.74 crores filed tax returns and of 13.94 lakh companies, only 5.97 lakh have filed returns. 
 
These figures indicate how skewed the system currently is. The initiatives being proposed by the government will increase the tax base, the tax rate can be reduced without impacting government revenue. A further reduction in the tax rate would be beneficial for businesses and the economy; thus beginning a virtuous cycle of growth. 
 
<keyword id="4160200" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital-india-means">Digital India Means</keyword> a Stronger India 
Most businesses struggle to survive, not because they can’t be profitable, but because they face severe cash-flow constraints for their daily operations. While these businesses struggle, traditional banks are reluctant to offer loans. 
 Budget 2017-18 has tried to address this by doubling the lending target to ₹2.44 lakh crores. This is in addition to the increase in government credit guarantees for SMEs from ₹1 crore to ₹2 crores, as announced by PM <keyword id="6354642" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Modi">Modi</keyword> in December 2016. Moreover, the Finance Minister proposed tax concession on provisions for non-performing assets (NPAs) and ₹10,000 crores of recapitalization for state-owned lenders.

The RBI has already included lending <keyword id="6354598" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="NBFCs">NBFCs</keyword> that are powered by cutting-edge lending platforms into the CGTSME (the credit guarantee scheme for SMEs). Similar initiatives need to be taken to equip FinTech lenders to help meet the unfulfilled credit demand of over $250 billion among SMEs. 
 The provisions in the Union Budget 2017-18 appear startup and fintech friendly. An ever-increasing number of <keyword id="6362513" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Startups">startups</keyword> are technology-dependent. These startups are likely to experience greater ease of doing business due to the heavy emphasis on the Budget on digitization. Furthermore, technological services will result in digital footprints of SMEs and consumers, which Fintech lenders can leverage to create and offer customized credit solutions.
