HP launches new PCs, displays and webcams for a hybrid work environment

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Apple used to dominate the K-12 education market. Generations of kids were raised on its tech. </li><li>Chromebooks now fill the void for several reasons, <strong>columnist Michael Gartenberg says.</strong></li></ul><p>Long before music was part of Apple's DNA and computers were something to be strapped to one's face, Apple was the de facto standard for K-12 education. An entire generation grew up trying to get through the "Oregon Trail" series or learning to type with the help of Mavis Beacon. Today, Apple logos shine brightly in universities around the world but it's all but gone from K-12 classrooms.</p><p>Apple's share of the K-12 education market has been <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.zdnet.com/article/windows-pcs-gain-share-in-k-12-in-the-u-s-but-chromebooks-still-dominate/"><u>under siege since at least 2017</u></a>, when low-cost Windows computers and Google's affordable Chromebooks with its suite of cloud apps, began to own the market. These days, Chromebooks dominate in schools, according to <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://canalys.com/newsroom/global-tablet-market-share-Q2-2023"><u>market-research firm Canalys</u></a>.</p><p>I talked to several school principals and superintendents who told me that Google's support for collaboration and Chromebooks' multiuser capabilities make it the clear choice for institutions that are already under budget constraints.</p><div type="image" title="apple ipad what's a computer" height="1208" width="1933" msid="102619079" hostid="261" sizebytes="49330"></div><h2>Why the iPad isn't winning with K-12 schools</h2><p>Apple once worked hard to position the iPad as its offering for education. (Remember the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfR_Jj4grZE"><u>2017 "What's a computer?" commercial </u></a>where a school-aged kid spends the day, including doing homework, on the iPad? Or the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.ispot.tv/ad/bn9U/apple-ipad-air-election-song-by-sparks"><u>"Your next computer is not a computer"</u></a> ad where two high schoolers use their iPads to compete for class president?)</p><p>But as one principal of a relatively affluent private school pointed out to me, the cost of an iPad — along with a Magic Keyboard (cover folio keyboards did not meet their needs), plus an Apple pencil — was the equivalent of at least three comparable Chromebooks that could be used by more than one student. Chromebooks are also much easier to repair or replace and log back in. There's no need for the complex restore process that Apple uses, particularly for iOS devices.</p><p>One of Apple's biggest pushes to make the iPad the standard device used in K-12 schools was back in 2013 when the Los Angeles school system signed a contract to purchase $1 billion worth of devices. I worked at Apple at the time, and that contract was viewed as a huge win and was expected to be the first of many deals that would propel iPads into classrooms across the country. Unfortunately, it didn't quite turn out that way.</p><p>The initial $30 million contract was expected to expand to about $500 million as the project rolled out over the following year. An additional $500 million was to be used to expand internet access and other infrastructure issues at schools. Costs rose quickly as the need for peripherals such as keyboards became apparent, and critics noted that the iPad model the district agreed to buy was already superseded by newer, more capable devices sold at retail stores.</p><p>That <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-controversial-plan-to-give-ipads-to-la-public-school-students-failed-2014-10"><u>LA contract is something that Apple never talks about</u></a> anymore and shows that even if iPads were appropriate for this market, Apple might not be equipped with the proper sales and support teams to deliver large-scale projects. Lately, the schools and districts I've seen using iPads as part of their curriculum are mostly small-scale projects or grassroots organizations.</p><div type="image" title="Bring on college, Apple website ad" height="1222" width="2220" msid="102619084" hostid="261" sizebytes="57124"></div><h2>Why schools love Google Chromebooks</h2><p>Apple's somewhat confusing product line is part of the problem. Is the iPad really a computer suited for productivity, as Apple often claims? Or do the iMac and MacBook belong in the classroom? These are questions Apple hasn't successfully answered at the basic consumer level, even at a time when both <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2023/04/10/apples-mac-shipments-fall-more-than-40percent-worse-than-major-rivals-idc.html">Mac</a> and <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.sec.gov/ix?doc=/Archives/edgar/data/320193/000032019323000077/aapl-20230701.htm">iPad</a> sales are declining.</p><p>Schools are looking for devices and services that are low-cost, specifically designed for education, support premium features such as pens, are well-constructed, and have a long battery life. They're not looking <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-vision-pro-3499-price-reveal-prompts-groans-sighs-laughter-2023-6">at $3,400 spatial-computing devices</a>. (When I mentioned Apple's new virtual reality <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/no-good-reason-to-buy-apple-ar-rvision-pro-2023-6">Vision Pro device to one teacher,</a> she said they need devices that will help kids with science projects, not buy science projects from Apple.)</p><p>Chromebooks' affordability, classroom-specific features, and compatibility with Google's suite of educational tools make them an ideal choice for institutions looking for a device that can meet the specific needs of the classroom.</p><p>But maybe more importantly, Google now owns the K-12 market because Apple appears to be uninterested in it. It's back-to-school season now and Apple's homepage has the message "Save on Mac or iPad for College" splashed across it.</p><p>Economics aside — although there's quite a lot of money to be made in this area — the unique relationship Apple once had with students went beyond the cost of the devices in the school. The Apple II wasn't just the classroom computer, it was also the home computer. The Mac was the PC kids took with them to college and later to the business world. The individual relationship Apple had with students from the time they were old enough to use a computer created brand loyalty from day one, which created customers for life.</p><p>As the education market evolves, I expect Chromebooks will continue to command an outsize market share and become even more widely adopted by schools and districts. They aren't as flashy as the latest devices from Cupertino, but in the case of the classroom at least, utility beats cachet. <ul><li>Xiaomi today introduced the Pad 6 starts at price of ₹26,999</li><li>Xiaomi Pad 6 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 SoC</li><li>Xiaomi keyboard folio and smart pen 2 are also introduced for the Pad 6</li></ul><br />Xiaomi’s foray into the tablet space saw a golden run last year with the launch of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/news/xiaomi-pad-5-review-is-it-best-android-alternate-to-ipad-air/articleshow/91647787.cms">Pad 5</a>. Self-admittingly the brand was also surprised with the bumper response the device received, flying off the shelves in minutes. The supply couldn’t keep up with the demand. Riding on that success, Xiaomi this year is back with the Pad 6. Taking lessons from the response from the Pad 5, the brand claims we can expect a different experience here. Having reviewed the Pad 5 last year, I believe I can be a judge of that. So, are these changes incremental? And can this device go against the likes of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/gadgets/news/oneplus-pad-review-feature-packed-tablet-with-a-sleek-design/articleshow/99848436.cms">OnePlus Pad</a> or the mighty iPad Pro? I answer this in my review. <br /><br />Xiaomi has also introduced a new keyboard case along with the smart pen 2. I will be touching upon them as well. <br /><br /><strong>Price &amp; Availability</strong><br />Xiaomi Pad 6 will be available in two variants. There is a variant with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage priced at ₹26,999 . Then there is a variant with the same 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage priced at ₹28,999. The keyboard case and smart pen 2 are sold separately and are priced at ₹4,999 and ₹5,999 respectively.<br />You can buy the new Xiaomi Pad and its accessories from Amazon and Xiaomi’s own D2C website. <br /><br /><strong>Design<br />    <div type="image" title="Xiaomi Pad 6 is light weight." msid="100958553" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Xiaomi Pad 6 is light weight.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div></strong>The blueprint for the design of the latest Xiaomi Pad was set last year itself. Since, the Pad 6 not only feels premium, but also lighter in the hands. The weight distribution is commendable, and irrespective of the size I didn’t find any issue maintaining a grip around it. The flat edges also help in holding it better, something that the iPad is famous for. <br /><br />Xiaomi seems to be taking inspiration for the camera module on the tablets from their flagship smartphones. The Pad 5’s camera module resembled the 11 Pro’s while the Pad 6’s resembles the Xiaomi 13 Pro. It does look subtle here, given the massive real estate on the back, however there is some wobble to it. Something that totally vanishes once you slap on the case. <br /><br />The review variant with me is in a graphite grey color, which looks nice, but does register fingerprint smudges easily. It comes with an IP53 dust and water resistant rating, important if you travel with your devices. <br /><br />Xiaomi Pad 6 does not feature a fingerprint scanner, something I complained about last year as well. You are dependent on the optical set-up to unlock the device or feed in the passcode. On the bottom we have a USB Type-C port which is now upgraded and is compatible with HDMI output. A crucial step to bridge the gap between tablets and consumer PCs. You can also connect a wired mouse and keyboard with an extension here. I tested it out, and liked it a lot. For that matter, this section of the review is written with the help of a third party wired keyboard. <br /><br />On the right side we have the volume rockers which are tactile and work well. The placement for the smart pen dock has also been shifted downwards making it easier to put back and retract. <br /><br /><strong>Display<br />    <div type="image" title="The display has a max refresh rate of 144Hz." msid="100958651" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The display has a max refresh rate of 144Hz. &amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div></strong><br />Xiaomi Pad 6 features an 11-inch 2.8K Display. It’s an IPS LCD panel with 1800x2880 pixels resolution. Xiaomi has taken care of the bezel situation this time, since they are slimmer than what we saw last year. This is a welcoming change, however it still is a LCD panel and not an OLED.<br /><br />The viewing experience on the Xiaomi Pad 6 is more or less the same as the Pad 5. The display can be characterized by its vibrant illumination and ability to render natural colors while preserving intricate details. However, it should be noted that the black levels, particularly in the corners, could be improved, although this is a common characteristic of LCD screens.<br /><br />The Xiaomi Pad 6 does support HDR10+ along with Dolby Atmos across all the compatible apps. So if you are primarily buying the tablet to watch content you are in good hands. The content across all OTT apps bounce out and looks great. However, it’s not just the virtual prowess that stands out; the audio set-up here is also top-notch. The quad speaker set-up fires audio parallelly which delivers room filling audio. To give you a context - me and my brother watched Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantamania on the tablet without finding a need to hook up a speaker. <br /><br />    <div type="image" title="The tablet shows content in 16:10 ratio." msid="100958667" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The tablet shows content in 16:10 ratio. &amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div><br />You can also set-up HDR to some compatible apps like the calculator or notes. I doubt anyone would need to use it, or realize that it exists but it does. <br /><br />There are a couple of areas Xiaomi Pad 6 has improved over the Pad 5. Like an improved 144Hz max refresh rate. Moreover it can switch between 7 stages of refresh rate with a max refresh rate of 144Hz. This basically covers all your needs- gaming to reading on the web. And the responsiveness of the tablet is in fact top tier across all use cases. <br /><br />While the auto-switch does work well, I preferred keeping the tablet on 144Hz throughout my testing. The trade in for a negligible dip in battery is worth it. <br /><br />    <div type="image" title="Xiaomi Smart Pen 2" msid="100958716" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Xiaomi Smart Pen 2&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div><br />Now to compliment this display we do have a newly designed Xiaomi Smart Pen 2. The design change is utilitarian, with two hard press buttons adding to the convenience. From clicking screenshots to switching between different pen styles the SmartPen 2 is more democratic with your usage. It is also very responsive, be it taking notes or just doodling in general. You can also design with it, especially given the battery life here is solid at 150 hours. Moreover a minute of charge can give you 7 hours of battery life. Technically this thing is unkillable if you keep your pad charged up at all times. Xiaomi Pad 6 does not work with last year's Smart Pen. This implies that a user needs to buy the newer smart pen even if they might have an existing unit. Any brand trying to create an enclosed ecosystem has to be more liberal, and backward compatibility is a major factor to hold customers. I hope Xiaomi works on this moving forward.<br /><strong><br />Software<br />    <div type="image" title="MiUi 14 is well optimised for the Xiaomi Pad 6." msid="100958684" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;MiUi 14 is well optimised for the Xiaomi Pad 6.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div></strong><br />Xiaomi Pad 6 runs on Android 13 out of the box, and comes with MiUi 14 skin. Like we observed on the Xiaomi Pad 5, MiUi is optimized for a tablet here.<br /><br />Xiaomi has been able to retain what I liked about the Xiaomi Pad 5 last year, in this iteration as well. What comes as a bonus are some add-on features, many of them are useful but some of them are not. <br /><br />Before we move on to that, aesthetically, the MiUi 14 looks great on the tablet, and minimal bloatware is always appreciated. It retains its useability, with minimal effort required to understand how it works. Something crucial for tablet space considering there will be people buying it for their kids to study. <br /><br />Moving to the upgrades now in the UI. Just like last year you can open up to 2 apps together on the screen. While that was great given the screen size, you can now also pin another app on top and move it around. This comes in very handy for workflow management. Example, I maintain a spreadsheet for our Amazon Live Streams. This requires addition, creating tables and referring to video files as well. I could ditch my laptop and maintain this all on the Xiaomi Pad 6. <br /><br />The UI also provides shortcuts to change the display mode, which I used quite often while watching content. A factor that not a lot of people touch upon are the widgets on the Xiaomi Pad 6. My favorites being the calendar and email, cementing further that logistical productivity can be maintained here.<br /><br />Now talking about the add-ons that sit in the middle. They exist, but don’t have an immediate use case. Xiaomi is trying to build an ecosystem here, and the first step is to let their smartphones communicate with the Xiaomi Pad. The catch is - only one smartphone for now, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/xiaomi-13-pro-review-go-for-the-camera-stay-for-the-experience/articleshow/98326748.cms">Xiaomi 13 Pro.</a> <br /><br />Like the Apple devices, now you can update notes, click images and maintain communication between the devices easily. The UI also allows you to remotely use the 13 Pros camera to click images and update them in folders in real time.<br /><br /> All these features work smoothly, but the real question remains - how many people own the 13 Pro? While we can appreciate the inclusiveness Xiaomi is trying to build here, for now it seems half baked. I hope over time with OTA updates we can see more devices becoming compatible with this. <br /><br />Xiaomi does provide a saving grace with the promise of 3 years of software updates and 5 years of security updates on the device. <br /><br /><strong>Performance</strong><br />Xiaomi Pad 6 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 SoC, which admittedly is a 2 year old processor. While the purists can complain about the relevance of the processor here and that it is too old, I tend to disagree. <br /><br />The new processor argument sits well with a smartphone more, compared to a tablet. Mostly because a tablet's use case is comparatively limited. While there can be other reasons for you to not consider the Xiaomi Pad 6, processor should not be one of them. <br /><br />Moving to the actual performance output on the Pad 6, I can put it in one word - optimal. The tablet can easily perform everyday tasks with a breeze. This involves internet surfing, watching content or basic computing. The apps are well optimized and when put together with the hardware do not let you down. <br /><br />The 8GB RAM on board can hold lighter apps for longer durations as well. So spreadsheets, calculators and other utilitarian apps work beautifully. There is a dip in performance when you switch to heavier apps. <br /><br />Games like COD: Mobile and asphalt 9 work decently on the tablet but I did notice heating after a spell of 20 minutes. The gameplay was smooth however, the RAM did struggle to hold them in place while I switched between apps. <br /><br />Internal storage here though is solid at 256GB which means you can download and store content, files and documents without breaking a sweat. And if you want additional storage, you can also hook up your hard drives with the USB-C port. <br /><br />This golden run of the Pad 6 comes to a hault with the absence of the SIM card slot here. Yes, just like last year the tablet will be available in WiFi only variant. This informally suggests that the Pad 6 is only an entertainment device, since utility requires network connectivity as well. <br /><br />Yes, you can take notes, download content, and then sync them up later. But, a dedicated SIM card here would add another layer of utility which I missed dearly.<br /><br />Battery life on the Xiaomi Pad 6 is solid, the 8840 mAh battery can easily last over 2 days with light usage. Over the weekend when I was binge watching content on it, I found myself charging it only at the end of the day. The 33W fast charger in the box takes about 2 and a half hours to charge it, which is good speed for a battery of this size. <br /><br />While I write this review I haven’t had the chance to check out the keyboard case. The Xiaomi Pad 6 like last year excels in these areas. Its main camera boasts a 13MP resolution, capturing decent images. They are not worthy of your social media feed, but occasional photography is taken care of. <br /><br />Xiaomi understands the significance of document scanning and includes a document mode in the camera app, something we see in their smartphones as well now. You can convert them in different doc formats as well. <br /><br />While the main camera can shoot 4K videos up to 30fps, the results are underwhelming. <br /><br />Like last year ,the presence of a lens module on the back might give the impression of a dual-camera setup. However, when it comes to taking selfies for social media, it's best to rely on your smartphone as the output from the tablet's front camera is also soft. Furthermore, its performance suffers in low-light conditions.<br /><br /><strong>Verdict</strong><br />Xiaomi Pad 6 strongly sets the future for the brand in the tablet space. The upgrades for now are more or less incremental, but given the right situation can be useful. What does stand out is the design and the UI. The smart pen 2 also adds to the experience making it easy to interact with. <br /><br />However, if you don’t want to compromise on the performance then you can look into the OnePlus Pad. And if you are in a creative field then I suggest taking the iPad route. <br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />

The best smart notebooks you can buy to keep your notes in the cloud

When Samsung debuted its original Galaxy Note smartphone in 2012, it introduced the American consumer tech market to the "phablet" concept. Now, the Korean gadget maker is hoping the Note Pro will do the same for tablets.</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">With its Note Pro, Samsung is attempting to penetrate the laptop-tablet hybrid category-i.e. tablets with large screens that work well with a keyboard for productivity. This space is largely dominated by Windows-based tablets from Microsoft and its partners, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/surface-2-review-2013-10">like the Surface</a>.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">The problem with these devices is that they often prove to be mediocre tablets and subpar laptops. Samsung's tablet faces a similar dilemma. It's a decent tablet, but isn't nearly compelling enough to justify spending the $700.</span></p>
<h2>The Basics</h2>
<p dir="ltr"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Measuring 11.6 x 8 x 9.9 inches and weighing 1.6 pounds, the Galaxy Note Pro is among the largest tablets Samsung has launched to date. That being said, it still feels surprisingly light for a tablet of its size. In fact, the tablet is nearly the same weight as Microsoft's Surface 2 (1.5 lbs), despite the fact that the Note Pro has a larger screen.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Samsung outfits the 12.2-inch Note Pro with the same faux-leather stitched back you'll find on its smartphone sibling, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/galaxy-note-3-review-2013-9">the Galaxy Note 3</a>. It's a welcome change from the bland plastic rear shell Samsung has used for previous Galaxy devices, but the Surface 2's polycarbonate build looks a bit more elegant and professional. After holding the Galaxy Note Pro for about 20 minutes, I also noticed that the back easily gathers fingerprint smudges.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Tailored for productivity, the Note Pro comes with a quad-core 1.9-GHz processor. In other words, you shouldn't have to worry about sluggish performance while running multiple apps or playing casual games. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">The Note Pro's battery lasted for quite a while on a single charge. After mixed usage, which involved browsing the Web, typing short documents in Google Drive and taking notes with the stylus, the tablet lasted for several days without needing an additional charge. During this time period I had the screen brightness set to 40 percent and occasionally used Bluetooth accessories with the tablet. <div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Business Insider, Lisa Eadicicco</span></p></div><p></p></div></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">The most distinguishing physical feature, however, is the Note Pro's 12.2-inch dazzling 2560x1600 display. Colors popped when looking at high-resolution photos on Flickr, and details appeared sharp as we viewed trailers on YouTube. While watching a trailer for "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," I was impressed with the tablet's wide viewing angles. If you typically use your tablet for streaming video through Netflix or Hulu, this tablet won't disappoint.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Like most Samsung devices, the Note Pro runs on a modified version of Android running Samsung's software skin known as TouchWiz. The tablet also comes with Android 4.4.2 KitKat out of the box, which is one of the newest versions of Google's mobile software.</span></p>
<h2>Using The Note Pro As A Laptop</h2>
<p dir="ltr"><div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Business Insider, Lisa Eadicicco</span></p></div><p></p></div>Samsung also sells a few Galaxy Note Pro accessories that are meant to make productivity easier, including a Bluetooth mouse ($39.99), keyboard ($59.99), and book cover ($69.99).</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">The keyboard, however, wasn't very accurate during my testing. When typing a few paragraphs in Google Drive, the keyboard lagged significantly, falling behind most of my keystrokes. The keyboard was also inaccurate, and often registered the same letter several times when I only hit the key once. This didn't happen every time I used the keyboard, but it happened on several occasions. It's important to note that this could be an issue specific to our review unit and may not happen with other Samsung Bluetooth keyboards. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">At the same time, Samsung's keyboard does come with a handy row of shortcuts which include brightness controls, volume buttons, and keys for home, recent apps and refresh actions. There are also buttons for capturing a screenshot and launching Google Now in the same top row.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Samsung's Bluetooth mouse was generally precise and responsive, but it felt a bit awkward to use when navigating Android. Since computer mice are typically used with desktop software rather than mobile, I often found myself moving the mouse cursor to the top of the screen in search of a minimize or exit button. The mouse felt most natural when using Google Chrome (or any Web browser) or managing various windows when using Samsung's Multi-Window feature. <div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Business Insider, Lisa Eadicicco</span></p></div><p></p></div></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Using the mouse to breeze through Android becomes much easier once you discover its shortcuts. For example, right clicking brings you directly back to the home screen and you can use the scroll wheel to navigate through different home screens. This is the mouse's way of mimicking the swiping gestures you would typically perform with your fingers.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">It's nearly impossible to use these accessories without the book cover, or any similar folio-style case/kickstand for that matter. The rear casing on Samsung's cover features the same leather feel as the tablet itself, and its folio cover folds back to prop up the tablet like a kickstand.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">You can also use the Note Pro to remotely control your desktop or laptop using the RemotePC app. The setup process requires you to first create a Samsung account if you don't already have one. After that, you'll have to install the RemotePC client on the PC you wish to control with your tablet, which is compatible with Mac and Windows. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Installing the client was fairly easy since the setup wizard provides step-by-step instructions, but you'll want to make sure you have Java plugins enabled in your Web browser. The specific plugins don't work with Google Chrome, so you'll have to use Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Safari. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Once I had the RemotePC software up and running, I was pleasantly surprised with how well it worked. I've used remote PC software in the past, and it usually ends up squishing my laptop's desktop and lagging significantly. This time, however, the desktop on my MacBook Pro fit the Note Pro's 12.2-inch screen perfectly, and there was virtually no delay as I opened Word documents and rearranged items on my desktop. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">The Note Pro's unusually large display make it an ideal choice for Android fans looking to get some work done, but there are better Bluetooth Android keyboards to choose from.</span></p>
<h2>Stylus</h2>
<p>Samsung's S Pen does more than your typical stylus. Rather than just acting as a replacement for your finger, the S Pen comes with its own menu of features designed to work with the stylus. As soon as you remove the S Pen from its holster, the Air Command menu fans out in the lower corner of the display. <p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Many of these features aren't very useful, but there are a few handy tricks including S Finder and Samsung's note-taking app Action Memo. Like its name implies, S Finder allows you to search for different types of content on your tablet, including emails, contacts, songs, apps and more. You can also take a screenshot and write notes over the image with Samsung's Screen Write feature, which could be useful for giving presentations but isn't as practical for daily use.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Most importantly, Samsung's S Pen succeeds in offering a fluid and natural pen-like experience. The Note Pro's screen immediately detected my words when jotting notes in Action Memo without any delay. The S Pen is pressure sensitive, which means it will produce darker handwriting the harder you press down-just like a real pen. </span></p>

<p dir="ltr">Samsung heavily modifies Android by adding its own apps, features and extras. For starters, swiping to the right from the main home screen takes you to Flipboard, while swiping to the left reveals Samsung's own Magazine UX. This arranges widgets in a tiled format for easy viewing, and by default it includes your calendar and email, business news headlines and a shortcut Hancom Office apps.</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">You can also pull down from the top of the screen to access notifications and quick settings shortcuts, which include options for Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, Airplane Mode and some of Samsung's own features such as Smart Stay and Smart Pause. If you're using the Note Pro for productivity, the Multi Window feature may be particularly useful. <p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Samsung's version of Android offers a few useful additions, but the OS is a bit busy overall. You'll probably end of turning most of Samsung's extras and sticking with the basic services from Google.</span></p>
<h2>Conclusion</h2>
<p dir="ltr">If you don't need the extra screen space, you can probably pass on the Samsung Galaxy Note Pro. You'll need to spend more than $750 to use it with a keyboard and get any real work done, and there are much cheaper productivity-focused tablets. The Galaxy Note 10.1 offers a similar experience for $200 less than the Note Pro, and Microsoft's Surface 2 starts at $449, which includes Microsoft Office. That's not to discredit the things I appreciate about this tablet. It's got a brilliant high resolution screen and useful stylus that feels natural, but that's not enough to convince me to cough up $700.<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Lisa Eadicicco</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Apple CEO Tim Cook wasn't exaggerating when he said the iPad Pro was "the biggest news in iPad" since the iPad.</p><p>This thing is gigantic.</p><p>The iPad Pro is Apple's new 12.9-inch iPad. For context, that means the screen is about three inches larger diagonally than Apple's 9.7-inch iPad Air 2. The screen is about as large as the one you find on a 13-inch MacBook - a full laptop computer.</p><p>It doesn't feel similar to a MacBook screen, however, because it has a 4x3 aspect ratio just like the rest of Apple's iPads.</p><p>Many other large-screened tablets, like Microsoft's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-just-admitted-microsoft-is-right-2015-9">Surface Pro</a>, have screens that are longer and meant to be used in landscape mode (so the long side runs horizontally). The iPad Pro isn't like this - it's designed to be held in portrait mode (long side vertical), and this quality makes it feel unlike any other competing big tablet.</p><p>Like Apple's previous iPads, the Pro model is super thin, light, and elegant looking. It's impressive that Apple managed to keep it so light while expanding its size so drastically. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Lisa Eadicicco</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>But it does feel a bit awkward to hold because of its size. In the limited time I had with the iPad Pro, it seems like something that's meant to be used on a table or a desk rather than in your lap. </p><h2><strong>So what about the keyboard and stylus?</strong></h2><p>Apple also sells two brand new accessories to go with the iPad Pro -a keyboard and a stylus called the Apple Pencil. The keyboard also doubles as a folio case that protects your iPad's screen when it's not being used as a keyboard.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Lisa Eadicicco</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The keyboard doesn't feel quite as solid as what you'd find on your laptop or desktop computer. The keys also have a grippy texture - they aren't slick and hard like the ones you'd find on a laptop.</p><p>It seems sturdy enough for getting casual work done or for productivity on the go, but I wouldn't want to use the iPad Pro as my primary work device. Plus, the iPad's 4:3 aspect ratio makes it look a little weird when used like a laptop.</p><p>(By the way, the iPad does stand up properly when the keyboard is attached - the hand in the picture here was simply somebody trying to reach out and touch it, not holding it up.)</p><p>The Apple Pencil has a smooth, glossy feel that's reminiscent of Apple's older Mac products. It's lightweight and comfortable to hold, like a pen.</p><p>The Apple Pencil is mostly being pushed as a tool for artists, sketchers, and photographers. The stylus is pressure sensitive, so you can press down harder on the screen to make certain words appear more bold or to simply make the color appear darker. This worked well in practice, and it felt simple to use. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Lisa Eadicicco</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Many styluses are pressure sensitive, but what makes the Apple Pencil stand out is its ability to detect how you're using it.
