Well, if you’d ask that son in 2024, he’d rather hit the loan button on his <keyword id="19977340" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="demat" source="keywords">Demat</keyword> account than pawn his mother’s gold jewellery. Given how Indians are rapidly resorting to taking loans against their investments in shares and mutual funds, these might as well be a cherished family heirloom in today’s time. Fair warning though; it's not as if gold and loans against it are going down in India’s lending scene. It's very much the opposite, shining brighter than ever! The secured loan category is having its time in the spotlight, and people are certainly looking beyond land and property to get their hands on some extra monies! But what is funding the steep rise behind these loans? And are they as failsafe and secure as they’re made out to be? We decode for you in this week’s Simply Put. <h2>The great Indian pawning party</h2>Pawning one’s gold has been, by far, the OG Indian financial move to get a loan. That continues well into 2024, and apparently, more so when India decides to wed and celebrate! Thus far this year, domestic gold prices have grown by 23%, outperforming benchmark indices like Nifty and Sensex by a mile, which have gone up by 9.85% and 8.86%, respectively. The growth in gold loan disbursal rates month on month this year could also put Nifty and Sensex’s growth to shame. In just September 2024, gold loans grew an astounding 51%, up from 40.9% in August, 30.5% in June, and just 14.8% in March. <h2>Hey, wait up for me, says <keyword id="23953567" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="las" source="keywords">LAS</keyword></h2>In lockstep with the elder, gold loan sibling, advances against shares and bonds have also been inching up since 2022. Data from RBI (Reserve Bank of India) notes that as of September 2022, the outstanding quantum of loans that were taken against shares (LAS) and bonds stood at Rs 7,397.94 crores. This inched up to Rs 7,764 crore in September 2023. Come 2024, and it looked like this was LAS’ time to shine. Loans swiftly skyrocketed, with outstanding loans in this category going up from Rs 8,492 crore in March 2022 to a staggering Rs 9,546 crore at the end of September 2024. Naturally, the smoke of LAS has its fire in the record inflows that Indians are pouring into the stock market and mutual funds month on month. Per AMFI (<keyword id="20090034" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="association-of-mutual-funds" source="keywords">Association of Mutual Funds</keyword> in India), the net AUM (assets under management) of India’s mutual fund industry grew to Rs 67,25,614.61 crores in October 2024, up from Rs 67,09,259.24 crores in September 2024. Even the number of retail mutual fund folios, which include equity, hybrid, and solution-oriented mutual funds, burgeoned to 17,23,52,296 in October, as compared to 16,81,61,366 in September. The same goes for stock investments in India, where the number of new demat accounts that are added every month just simply refuses to climb down. As of last month, total demat accounts in the country stood at 17.9 crore, which is more than the entire population of full-fledged nations like Japan (12.45 crore), Russia (14.38 crore), and Bangladesh (17.3 crore). In fact, since February this year, the monthly growth of LAS has been hitting double digits. From 11.3% in March to 21.6% in May to 26.8% in August, growth in LAS has been exceptional, hitting 22.9% in September this year. For context, monthly growth in the LAS segment was at a mere 5% in September 2023. <h2>What's driving the growth?</h2>It's a win-win for both the bank and the customer. Customers love them because LAS is available at a lower interest rate compared to unsecured personal loans. You can get a loan at an interest rate of anywhere between 9 and 12% by pledging your gold, MF units, or shares. Compare this to over 10-28% rates, which is the range where unsecured personal loans charge interest. Banks love <keyword id="827883" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="secured-loans" source="Orion">secured loans</keyword> since they are well-secured. In case you default on paying back, the bank can sell off your gold, shares, or mutual fund units to recover the amount. This takes a lot of stress off the banks, which are already dealing with secured loans’ riskier sibling-unsecured lending. High NPAs (non-performing assets) and non-payments in the unsecured borrowing space have already put RBI on red alert, which is why the apex bank is tightening the screws on unsecured lending, which was well on its way to becoming a ticking time bomb. As a result, credit growth has moderated to 12.8% YoY in October, as against the 19.3% rise recorded in the year-ago period. Yet it's not like the banks won't feel the heat. Analysts at Nomura note that personal loan delinquencies in India that have been overdue by over 90 days rose to 5.1% in the last financial year, as opposed to just 3.9% in the year prior. <h2>How does it work?</h2>Both these loans work on a similar principle: Your loan amount is equal to a certain percentage of the actual market value of your asset. This is known as the <keyword id="20051485" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ltv" source="keywords">LTV</keyword> (loan-to-value ratio). In the case of gold and debt mutual funds, RBI mandates that this LTV be about 75-80%. So, for every Rs 100 of gold or debt mutual fund unit you pledge, your maximum loan amount cannot exceed Rs 80. If you pledge gold, which has a market value of Rs 10 lakh, you can take a loan of up to Rs 8,00,000. In the case of shares and mutual fund units, this limit is set at 50%. So, your shares worth Rs 5,00,000 can only get you a loan worth Rs 2,50,000. But the bright side? You can continue earning returns on your investments and pay interest only on the amount you use, since this loan works as an overdraft facility. <h2>Super safe, you say?</h2>Interest rates on both of these loans are very much dependent on the market value of the asset, which wildly fluctuates on a day-to-day basis. So, in case the value of your asset falls, you’ll have to keep a margin or more of the same asset in order to continue with the loan and maintain the LTV balance. Failure to do so could mean the bank can even sell off your asset. Says financial planner Nema Chaya Buch. “Yes, LAS offers easy availability of funds since these loans come with a lower interest rate as compared to personal loans. Also, you continue to earn average returns of 10–13% on your equity investments. But the downside is, in case of emergency, those pledged securities cannot be sold. Also, if the equity market goes down, then the bank may ask for additional collateral. Raghvendra Nath, MD, Ladderup Wealth Management notes that taking a LAS is best when the value of your securities has appreciated significantly. “This allows you to maximize the loan amount based on your collateral while also addressing financial needs without having to liquidate your investment portfolio. However, there are notable disadvantages to consider. The market risk is significant; a substantial decline in market value could lead to margin calls, which may incur fees and charges if there are delays or prepayments, ultimately increasing the effective cost of borrowing. Furthermore, failure to make timely payments could result in the loss of your assets.”. Umesh Mohanan, ED &amp; CEO, of Indel Money, cautions that one should have a sufficient quantity of gold to get the loan amount one wants. "According to the current RBI rules, the loan applicant/borrower can draw up to 75% of the total market value of the collateral/gold jewellery. So, always carry a sufficient quantity of gold based on one’s loan requirement. “The most important thing is that the valuation of the gold depends on the purity of the gold. If the borrower pledges gold with higher purity, such as 24 carats or 22 carats, he will get the maximum loan amount," he adds.

The drug firm had reported a net profit of Rs 297 crore in the January-March quarter of the 2022-23 fiscal. Revenue from operations rose to Rs 5,534 crore in the period under review from Rs 5,011 crore in the year-ago period, Zydus Lifesciences said in a statement. For the year ended March 31, 2024, the company reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 3,859 crore as compared with Rs 1,960 crore in FY23. Revenue from operations rose to Rs 19,547 crore from Rs 17,237 crore in the 2022-23 fiscal. "Our relentless focus on patient centricity, operational efficiency, strategic investments, and execution of our diversified product portfolio continues to pay off, resulting in a significant improvement in profitability as well," Zydus Lifesciences MD Sharvil Patel said. The company said its board has approved a final dividend of Rs 3 per equity share of Re 1 each, subject to approval of the shareholders. Shares of the company ended 4.28 per cent up at Rs 1,051.90 apiece on the BSE. Zydus Q4 net profit surges 4-fold to ₹1,182 cr; revenue at ₹5,534 cr

The first day at a new job is always weird. You have no idea what you're supposed to be doing, who to talk to, or how to even really be. The theory is that over time you get the hang of it — but lots of workers make it months into their jobs and feel like they're still kind of winging it. It's not that they don't want to learn; it's that nobody's teaching them. In many pockets of corporate America, on-the-job training mostly amounts to "figure it out." Workers are struggling to get a handle on their jobs, and this failure falls on everyone — companies, managers, human-resources departments, and, in some cases, the workers themselves.You don't need to look far to find evidence that people don't feel ready when it comes to work. Some <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-workers-are-lazy-lack-soft-skills-managers-say-2023-8">bosses complain</a> that Gen Z workers don't know what they're doing and are lazy. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-lazy-hiring-jobs-careers-hr-training-pandemic-2024-8">HR professionals and Gen Z workers</a> argue that young people want to be successful in the workforce, but they simply aren't given the tools to do it. In a survey from the <a target="_blank" href="https://blog.adobe.com/en/publish/2023/09/27/adobe-future-workforce-study-what-us-employers-need-know-about-gen-z-workplace#:~:text=Gen%20Z%20is%20hungry%20for%20mentorship%20and%20development&amp;text=Gen%20Z%20is%20eager%20for,percent)%20reported%20having%20a%20mentor.">software company Adobe</a>, 83% of Gen Z respondents said having a mentor at work was crucial to their career, but only half said they had a mentor. It's not just young workers who are facing a training problem; it's everybody. For <a target="_blank" href="https://www.gallup.com/394373/indicator-employee-engagement.aspx">Gallup's employee-engagement indicator</a>, which analyzes employee perspectives using random samples of working adults, less than half of US employees said they knew what's expected of them at work. This is a costly problem, too: <a target="_blank" href="https://www.gallup.com/workplace/393497/world-trillion-workplace-problem.aspx">Gallup</a> found employees who weren't engaged cost $8.8 trillion in lost productivity worldwide.Just figuring out the day-to-day basics of the job is a challenge. The pandemic-driven upheaval of the past several years led to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/great-resignation-still-going-layoffs-low-job-openings-quits-high-2022-11">high amounts of</a> job-hopping, organizational brain drain, and a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/loyalty-employee-employer-job-security-broken-work-companies-bosses-2024-1">decline in loyalty</a> among employers and employees. The chaos has left employers, managers, and employees wondering just how much time and money it's worth investing in training in the first place. The rise of remote and hybrid work has complicated the situation even more. It's tough to learn by osmosis over Slack, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hr-software-tech-companies-employees-productivity-workday-oracle-adp-2024-8">the deluge of HR apps and training modules</a> isn't filling in the gaps."Most companies want employees to 'hit the ground running' and use apps, AI, and training videos to avoid disrupting another employee's flow or for the lack of staff to train someone new or help someone learn a new skill," Ana Goehner, a career strategist and HR professional, said.That may work in some instances, but in others, instead of hitting the ground running, workers find themselves perpetually zig-zagging, unable to break into a full sprint.That people feel like they're not equipped to do their jobs isn't a new phenomenon. There's been a long-standing decay of investment in learning and training by employers as part of an effort to create leaner organizations, said Kenneth Matos, the director of market insights at HiBob, an HR-tech company. If you're cutting costs, training is an easy place to do it. That's especially true when many employers use the internet to access a wider talent pool than in the past, which means they can just look for a candidate who already knows everything instead of having to teach someone. And, of course, plenty of companies have been axing middle managers, the people who would have previously been in charge of training up younger or newer employees."You cut away the people who are the link between big strategic ideas and day-to-day tactical activities," Matos said. "And so you end up with a scenario of a big strategic speaker talking to a much more junior doer, and they're like, 'I don't know how this translates into my job.'" Making matters worse, in many workplaces, training and mentoring are treated as an extra, rather than an integral part of the job, if they're noticed at all. In your performance review, "I spent 10 minutes explaining something to the new guy he was too afraid to ask his boss about" doesn't rate very highly. As workers and managers are increasingly overextended, these types of unmeasured, softer activities can fall by the wayside. This creates a conflicting web of incentives. It may be better, organizationally, for a manager or experienced employee to spend time teaching everyone on their team to complete a complex task so that a team's performance is better overall, but if they have an individual quota to meet, they may opt to focus on doing the task themselves, even though it's not what's best for the business."You end up with this really weird tension around organizational citizenship behaviors like mentoring and developing employees," Matos said. "Do you give a manager a lower quota because they are also magnifying everybody else's, or are you assuming they're going to do more than everybody else, are more talented, and also do the mentoring?"The people in the middle — who find themselves in between the big bosses and the little guys — are going to focus more on managing up than managing down. It's hard to tell the CEO that you can't come to that third unnecessary meeting of the day because your time would be better spent training that new hire on logging sales calls."Managers feel so caught up, and oftentimes they feel pressure of, 'OK, well if I'm going to disappoint someone, then it's going to be someone junior to me and not someone senior to me,'" said Ashley Herd, the founder of Manager Method, a training platform for managers.Many managers really are over it. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.gallup.com/workplace/510326/manager-squeeze-new-workplace-testing-team-leaders.aspx">Gallup found</a> that in 2023, managers were likelier than nonmanagers to say they're disengaged at work, burned out, and on the lookout for a new job. Their workers have been given more responsibilities, their teams have been restructured, and they're expected to accomplish everything with fewer resources, as in, money. And less than half of managers said they're sure they already had the skills needed to be great at their jobs, meaning managers weren't getting taught to be managers.At the r/managers forum on Reddit, the what-am-I-doing sentiment is evident. "Is it normal to get zero training as a new manager?" one Redditor <a target="_blank" href="https://www.reddit.com/r/managers/comments/1d6soeu/no_training_in_a_figure_it_out_situation/">asked</a>. "I have reviewed the team's work over the past couple of years, asked them questions to clarify a few things, and asked my boss questions to clarify a few things and have basically picked up most of it. Thought it was kind weird I got zero training, though."Technology is supposed to make training better, in theory. Why have an HR person go over the same PowerPoint on vacation policy for every new hire when a quick video or document stored away somewhere can do it just fine? That may work for simple processes like requesting time off or finding subscription logins, but it can become a problem when companies try to throw technology at their more-in-depth training problems. Nobody knows what they're doing here? Why not get an app to fix that? One of the biggest issues with using tech to solve what's ultimately a human problem is that it's hard to know if anyone is even going to use it. Take mentorship: Having one-on-one coaching from someone with more experience can help workers gain skills and knowledge that can't be found in a training video. It can also make workers likelier to stick around longer, help them feel more connected, and boost the sharing of institutional knowledge. Fostering these kinds of relationships is important, hence why the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.mentorcliq.com/blog/mentoring-impact-report">vast majority of Fortune 500 companies say</a> they have mentoring programs, many of which are facilitated by apps and software. How many people are actually using those programs, however, is unclear. Christy Pettit, the CEO of Pollinate Networks, which creates mentoring software, told me she recently spoke with a large multinational that told her despite having 2,000 licenses for the mentoring program, which was mainly an app, fewer than 200 people were using it and participation was declining every quarter."Most companies say they have a mentoring program, but few have one that works," she said. "It feels a little bit like when you buy a gym membership, and it makes you feel like you're doing something, but you may or may not be going to the gym."In some cases, tech-based training materials are disconnected from the realities of the work. All the training videos are done in an "official" corporate speak it turns out nobody actually uses, Matos, from HiBob, said. Or managers aren't well versed in what their charges are being taught and end up wanting the task done differently.Even when companies invest in training, it can often be directed toward the wrong people. Herd said that businesses often make the mistake of spending a ton of money on fancy retreats and training courses for their most senior leaders without making much, if any, investment in the bottom rungs."You could spend a fraction of that and give good training to all of your employees, and you're probably going to get more ROI if that's what you're focused on," she said.Stephanie Wolf, a vice president at RebuttalPR, a legal-communications firm, said the company learned the hard way about the costs of not investing enough time and energy in training people. As the firm grew, managers wouldn't realize people didn't know how to do timely tasks until they became urgent, or they'd discover employees were doing things in a way that wasn't consistent with the documentation and processes in place. That meant they had to rely more on senior staff to do the work and that projects took longer because training was happening alongside execution. "We've seen how our whole team can suffer when we don't train folks thoroughly enough," she said. To ensure accountability, she's now the point person on training, because the company found that when training was everyone's job, it was no one's. The firm has taken steps to get all the necessary information in one place and to slow the onboarding process down — instead of expecting people to take a week to get up to speed, it now gives them about a month.Wolf acknowledged it's "super easy for training to fall by the wayside when your client work gets busy," which means not allowing that to happen is a conscious effort. "Investing time now is going to save us all time in the long run," she said.It's easy to blame hybrid and remote work for some of these issues, to argue that if people were just gathered in an office together, that would fix things. But many HR professionals and career coaches say that's not necessarily the case. Yes, human interaction is helpful, but it doesn't solve problems like misaligned incentives, increasingly stretched managers, and a lack of a real, holistic plan for getting people up to speed. A remote-work training plan probably has to look different from an in-person one, but it's not impossible to craft. "In a remote environment, you, as the leader, need to model and also hold the individual accountable for taking initiative, saying, 'Hey, if you need something, I need you to tell me because I can't see you,'" Phoebe Gavin, a career and leadership coach, said.Gavin emphasized that it's not just on companies and managers to make sure employees are learning and getting onboarded but also on individual workers. New Delhi, <keyword id="13247465" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zydus-Lifesciences" source="Orion">Zydus Lifesciences</keyword> on Tuesday said it has acquired UK-based LiqMeds Group for GBP 68 million (around Rs 689 crore). The Ahmedabad-based group, through its wholly-owned subsidiary Zydus Pharmaceuticals UK Ltd, will also pay yearly earn-outs until 2026 depending on the achievement of certain agreed milestones towards the acquisition. LiqMeds Group of companies specialises in the development, manufacturing and supply of oral liquid products for global markets. The group's subsidiary LM Manufacturing Ltd has an oral liquids manufacturing site at Weedon, Northampton, UK, which supplies products to the US and UK markets. "Zydus will pay an upfront consideration of GBP 68 million and yearly earn-outs until 2026 depending on the achievement of certain agreed milestones towards the acquisition of the LiqMeds Group of companies," the company said in a regulatory filing. The transaction will be EPS accretive for Zydus from the first year of acquisition, it added. "We believe that liquid orals is a large, growing market and serves unmet needs with significant new market expansion opportunities," Zydus Lifesciences Managing Director Sharvil Patel said. In line with the patient-centric approach, the company believes that oral liquid formulations would help geriatric and paediatric patients, bringing in greater ease of convenience and therapy compliance, he added. Shares of Zydus were trading at 0.89 per cent lower at Rs 574.70 apiece on the BSE.

The tablet comes with a host of connectivity features, including the Smartphone Link feature that allows you to transfer data from your Xiaomi smartphone and tablet easily. In addition to this, you also get a shared clipboard feature, which allows you to copy text and images from your smartphone and paste them onto your tablet. In terms of performance, the tablet is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 chipset. It is available in two variants – 8GB RAM with 128GB of internal storage and 8GB RAM with 256GB of internal storage. I tested the 8GB RAM + 256GB internal storage variant. This is a mid-range chipset that offers decent performance and is enough to get you through your day-to-day activities. While it is not the most powerful chipset, I did not notice any stuttering or lags while gaming at default settings. The device does get slightly warm after an extended gaming session. The Redmi Pad Pro 5G comes with a huge 10,000mAh battery with 33W fast charging support. The battery on the tablet is good, offering two days of battery life with some gaming and steaming. Another important feature of the tablet is that it supports 5G connectivity, which is great to have, especially for data connectivity. <h2>Redmi Pad Pro 5G camera</h2>It features an 8MP primary camera with 4K recording support and comes with an 8MP selfie camera with 1080p video recording support. Indian PC market records 7.1% growth in Q2 2024, HP leads with nearly a third market share

"We would get it after tournaments. It was just lots of calories, good bang for your buck."So when other patrons of the Mexican grill chain started questioning this summer whether portion sizes varied between restaurants — or whether <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chipotle-customers-film-workers-over-small-portion-sizes-2024-5">filming Chipotle employees</a> as they prepared your order meant you got more meat — Cohen got inspired.In July, the 23-year-old set up <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.chipotlecost.com/">chipotlecost.com</a>, a website that lists the price of burrito bowls with one of seven different proteins at Chipotle restaurants around the US. The website provides a snapshot of Chipotle's prices for online orders.The differences between some Chipotle locations are particularly wide, according to the map. For example, the cheapest burrito bowls in the US are at a Chipotle in West Lafayette, Indiana, where a serving with carnitas runs $8.75. Bowls are most expensive at a store in The Bronx in New York City, where a carnitas bowl costs $12.25 — 40% more than in West Lafayette.Several years of painful US inflation have pushed consumers to think more carefully about how they spend their cash, and diners have been looking for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fast-food-price-rises-tipping-point-value-deals-combos-mcdonalds-2024-8">fast-food deals</a> lately when they eat out. While inflation has slowed, prices at many restaurants remain higher than a few years ago. Some chains, such as <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mcdonalds-extending-5-meal-again-adding-new-discounts-for-fall-2024-9">McDonald's</a>, started offering value meals this year to win over customers looking to save money.It's common for prices to vary at US restaurants depending on the cost of living where they're situated. Cohen's map includes color-coded dots for different price tiers, with green dots indicating stores with low prices and red dots denoting those with high prices.But the map also shows some more surprising price gaps between restaurants near each other.One Chipotle in Brea, California, charges $9.95 for a burrito bowl with Chicken Al Pastor, for instance, according to the website. A five-minute drive away, another Chipotle location was charging $10.95 for the same order when Cohen pulled the data.Chipotle did not respond to a request for comment.Regardless of the protein, a burrito bowl is likely to be more expensive in major cities on the East and West Coasts, such as New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, than in a small city in Ohio or Oklahoma, according to the map.<div type="image" title="Adam Cohen laughs while wearing a light-colored shirt and dark tie outside." height="800" width="800" msid="114119852" hostid="261" sizebytes="28580"></div>Cohen said he got the idea for the website from <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://taconomical.com/">taconomical.com</a>, a similar site that tracks prices for a handful of Taco Bell menu items at that chain's locations around the US. Creating the Chipotle version involved running a web scraper to collect the pricing data from Chipotle's website over 10 hours, Cohen said, plus about five hours of coding to build the website.It's not perfect, Cohen said. The map is missing some locations that weren't taking online orders when he pulled the data, he said, and the prices don't update in real time.But others appear to be impressed with chipotlecost.com. Cohen posted a link on Reddit, and the post got 1,200 upvotes (as well as comments asking for details about his methodology).Cohen said his own friends were impressed, too, including one who studied at Purdue University in Indiana, located near the West Lafayette Chipotle with the cheapest carnitas. "He was like, 'Oh, sick, I'm glad I've been getting the best prices for my entire college career,'" Cohen said."It's kind of hard to get a meal for $10 or $12," Cohen said. Despite declining shipments, the market value hit a new record for Q2. The company reported a 23% year-on-year growth in shipments, driven by its streamlined and focused portfolio. Vivo has emerged as a close second with a market share of 18.8% in Q2 2024, up from 17.4% in Q2 2023. The company maintained the second spot. Samsung, which was at the top spot in Q2 2023 with an 18.4% market share was pushed to the third spot with a market share of 18.1%. Realme and Vivo maintained the fourth and fifth spots with a market share of 12.5% and 11.4% respectively. <h2>Indians moving towards <keyword id="19914395" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="premium-smartphones" source="keywords">premium smartphones</keyword></h2>Indian consumers are moving towards premium smartphones and this was evident in Q2 2024 as the value of smartphones shipped reached a new high for Q2 despite a decline in shipments. The ultra-premium segment, which consists of smartphones priced above INR 45,000 recorded a 24% year-on-year growth. Vivo takes the second spot here as well, with a 16.8% share in market value, up from 16% in Q2 2023. Apple, which caters to the premium segment takes the third spot with a 16.3% share in in market value, slightly up from 16.2% recorded in Q2 2023. <h2><keyword id="20704187" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="5G-smartphones" source="keywords">5G smartphones</keyword> record new high</h2>5G smartphones have achieved a new record in share at 77% of overall shipments in Q2 2024. This has been driven by the reduction in the average selling prices (ASPs) of 5G smartphones.
