Known as the first female actors of Indian cinema, this mother-daughter duo is always regarded with utmost honour for breaking the stereotype of only male actors in the profession of performing arts. Starring together in Mohini Bhasmasura, the second venture of the legend Dadasaheb Phalke, they were cast as Mohini and Parvati, respectively. Both of them went on to become established actresses and their family members are still a part of the industry, veteran marathi actor Vikram Gokhale being one of them.

Born in Srikakulam, Andhra Pradesh, Karnam is the most recognised woman Indian weightlifter. In a glorious career spanning over 10 years, she has won 11 gold and 3 silver medals, and a much-celebrated Olympic bronze in 2000 Summer Olympics. Known for her physique, skills and technique, she is the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal, first woman recipient of Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, and also a recipient of Padma Shri and Arjuna Award. Nowadays, she runs her own academy, training others to do what she did and bring fame to the country.

Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom, better known as MC Mary Kom, needs no introduction. A five-time World Boxing champion, she is the only woman boxer to have won a medal in each one of the six world championships, a matter of sheer pride to the country. She achieved her much-awaited fame when she won the bronze medal in the 2012 Summer Olympics. A recipient of Padma Bhushan, Arjuna Award, Padma Shree, and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, she has also penned down an autobiography called Unbreakable and is all set to be played by Priyanka Chopra in her biopic.

With critically acclaimed films like Luck By Chance, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, and Dil Dhadakne Do for her track record, she is very much a part of the young brigade of the industry.

Perhaps the most unheard name in the list, Premlata Agarwal is a mountain climber, who is mostly remembered as the oldest Indian woman to have scaled Mount Everest. Not only this, she is also the first Indian woman to scale the Seven Summits, the ultimate dream for any mountaineer. For her contributions, the Indian government facilitated her with Padma Shri in 2013.

Known as India’s first professional female surfer, Malaviya has been surfing since past 8 years. She runs a surf club with her partner Tushar Pathiyan, known as the Shaka Surf Club, in addition to this, she also runs a camp called Camp Namaloha in Coastal Karnataka in India. She wants to promote the Indian coastline as a worldwide surfing destination.

(Eds: Adding details) New Delhi, Nov 25 () Malayalam feature "<keyword id="86993" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="jallikattu">Jallikattu</keyword>", directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery, has been selected as India's <keyword id="2158723" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="official-entry">official entry</keyword> for the <keyword id="10331246" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="international-feature-film-category">International Feature Film category</keyword> at the 93rd Academy Awards, the Film Federation of India (FFI) announced on Thursday. "Jallikattu", which was unanimously chosen from 27 entries across Hindi, Marathi and other languages, is about a tribe of men coming together to stop a bull that has run amok in their village. "There were a total of 27 films that had entered the race from Hindi, Malayalam and Marathi. The film which has been nominated by the jury to represent India at <keyword id="6376611" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="oscars">Oscars</keyword> is Malayalam film 'Jallikattu'. "It is a film that really brings out the raw problems which are there in human beings, that is we are worse than animals," filmmaker Rahul Rawail, Chairman, Jury Board, Film Federation of India, told reporters in an online press conference. The film, which derives its name from the popular-yet-controversial bull-taming event from the South, is based on a short story by Hareesh. It features actors Antony Varghese, Chemban Vinod Jose, Sabumon Abdusamad and Santhy Balachandran. Among the films that were considered by the jury included titles such as "Chhapaak", "Shakuntala Devi", "Chhalaang", "Gulabo Sitabo", "Eeb Allay Ooo!", "The Sky is Pink", "Bulbbul and internationally-celebrated feature "The Disciple". Calling Pellissery a "very competent director", known for several critically acclaimed films like "Angamaly Diaries" and "Ea Ma Yau", Rawail said "Jallikattu" is a production that country should be proud of. "The whole film talks about an animal that has run amok in a butcher's shop... The film has been depicted wonderfully and it has been shot very well. The emotion that comes out really moved all of us to have it selected," the chairman said. "Jallikattu" had its premiere on September 2019 at the Toronto International Film Festival and received widespread critical acclaim. The movie was particularly praised for Pellissery's spectacular directing effort, ably supported by Girish Gangadharan's cinematography and Renganaath Ravee's wild sound design work. Pellissery also won the best director trophy at the 50th International Film Festival of India last year. In 2019, Zoya Akhtar's "Gully Boy", starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, was India's entry to the Oscars. RDS RB RB
