<ul><li>As the industry copes with the after-effects of the lockdown, which had paralyzed the logistics and production involved in making ad films, communication around IPL has not been very impressive this year. </li><li>A lot of people have been talking about the dearth of quality ads that stand out or that have created an impact this year. </li><li>We speak to experts to find out the reason behind the dip in quality advertising this year and how ad agencies can buckle up to help their clients reap the best benefits in the upcoming days of IPL. </li></ul>Indian Premier League (IPL) has almost become a festival of its own that gives brands an opportunity to reach out to a huge number of people who are glued to their television sets for close to two months every year. Dream11 IPL 2020’s opening match itself was watched by 200 million people, which indicates why IPL is the biggest marketing opportunity for brands this year to bounce back. IPL also brings along an array of wonderful ads every year. In the early years, brands like Vodafone, Kingfisher and Nestle created some spectacular work to take advantage of this uniquely-engaging event. However, the on-going pandemic has brought in a lot of challenges for agencies. They are producing ads with minimum money, trying to operate within the government guidelines of production and selling it for really expensive slots. They are also expected to create an ad that stands out in a sea full of celebrity-endorsing cliches. And after seeing a lean first-half this year, all kinds of brands are trying to cash in on IPL’s fervor. With this increased pressure and responsibility, agencies are working extra hours to meet clients’ expectations. To top that, an air of despondency is still looming around because of the fear of the unknown, blues of working in isolation, pressure to overperform in a dismal atmosphere, salary cuts, work overload and time-crunch. Ergo, COVID-19 has had a clear impact on the country's creative minds as well, possibly leading to unimpressive production this year. A lot of people have been talking about the dearth of quality ads that stand out or that have created an impact this year. He said, “I guess in their keenness to use cricket and cricket stars the brand proposition has got lost. There are a few exceptions though. My personal favourite is the Swiggy spots – esp. the middle aged men getting together to watch IPL. Harsha Bhogle’s commentary at a key moment lends a great touch. IPL sponsor Dream 11’s ads using the superstars in classic gully street cricket situations with the line ‘yeh apna game hain’ is funny, endearing and tells consumers everyone is an equal when it comes to Dream 11.” On whether lockdown has impacted industry’s creativity, Mathias said, “Not really. I think many advertisers think that a spot in the IPL must be anchored in cricket – and sometimes the best spots have little to do with the sport. Vodafone’s zoozoos are a great case in point.” On the other hand, Ambi Parameswaran, Founder, Brand-Building helped us look at the brighter side and appreciated brands who have trusted in advertising despite seeing gloomy days. Parameswaran said, “There is a lot of debate on the fall of creative quality of ads in this year’s IPL. But this is a false argument. The country faced a severe lockdown and even now the movie halls are yet to open. Film shootings are happening in stages. So it is futile to say that why are the ads not their sparkling best. Instead we should applaud the brands that have boldly decided to advertise. These brands are demonstrating their faith in advertising and its effectiveness. Yes, there is a surfeit of tech-enabled brands and that is to be expected. But there are also so many auto brands, consumer product brands, consumer service brands, etc., that have decided to bet on IPL. Each and every one of those brands needs to be praised and not criticised for their relative tame creative quality. Research has shown, over a broad range of products, the creative quality may account for just about 7 - 11 % of ad effectiveness. The balance rests with media weight and the core messaging. So let us put our hands together for those brave brands who have decided to stimulate the market, nudge the consumer out of their inertia, to start spending.” Earlier while conceptualising TV ads, production challenges were given scant thought while approving scripts. However today, the starting point of conceptualising creatives would be around the associated production constraints, which Ronita Mitra, Founder and Chief Strategist, Brand Eagle Consulting said is one of the reasons why IPL ads are impacted this year. Mitra said, “All these constraints and challenges are visible in the ads being played during IPL 2020. However, these challenging times are also the litmus test of the true creative potential of the creative teams. Due to cuts in marketing budgets, ads have probably been made on much lower budgets. Further given the safety protocols to be followed these days you can see that most brand ads are either old ones or shot with solo models, or using animation. Viewers would also be seeing ads with those filters in mind and therefore be tempering their expectations of the entertainment value of the ads. Still, IPL 2020 could have been the ideal opportunity for brands and agencies to showcase some real creative talent, and to show that creativity and the power of idea can rise above the constraints of low budgets or execution constraints. To that extent, the display of creative thinking has been rather disappointing. For me, the Dream 11 ads are the only ones that stand out for making a serious attempt at creating a series of engaging ads.” Albeit, Kuber Chopra, Founder, Creative &amp; Strategy Director, Rasta, said that lack of creativity is not due to lockdown constraints. Chopra said, “I don't think one should attribute this lack of creativity to the lockdown because all good creatives enjoy good constraints. I am personally just really surprised that no one has done anything contextual which is focussed on the consumers who’ve been dealing with the pandemic. For instance the ad by Paytm featuring Sachin Tendulkar is quite campy where the service is also lost. I really like Dream11’s focus on the active fan. It is also good to see how the cricket demigods have been humanised and are happy to be part of the sobering script. In my opinion, ads need to have some cultural connect with viewers and much of this is missing as is evident even in the ad for Apple 11.” “It’s surprising how brands haven't taken a chance with either new stories or fresh treatment. Decision-makers and creative heads have chosen to be safe,” added Chopra. IPL is considered India’s Super Bowl, not only because it’s the biggest sporting event but also because over the years, it has come to become the benchmark for creativity in advertisements. Shashwat Das, Founder, Almond Branding, said, “Whether it was the iconic Zoozoos or Jio dhan dhanadan, Amazon’s Chonkpur Cheetahs or IPL’s own Jumping Japang campaign, we always looked up to what’s new and path-breaking each season. The expectations have only grown over the years. However, this season, apart from the funny series of Dream11 ads nothing else have yet got people talking. With more digital viewers of IPL this year than ever before, the engagement and online conversations that a brand can pull is the biggest success parameter. Sadly I still remember the DLF Maxima from the initial days of IPL more than any brand campaign this season. I am hoping as the game progresses, brands will rise to the occasion and surprise us.” On how ad agencies can buckle up to help their clients reap the best benefits in the upcoming days of IPL, Sameer Makani, Co-Founder and Managing Director Makani Creatives said, “The industry is still coping up with the after-effects of the lockdown which had led to paralyzing the logistics and production involved in making ad films. Although progress in digital advertising is visible, the attention span of the audience is significantly reduced. Today, it’s about opting for a more concentrated approach and creating content that resonates with the audience instead of conventional carpet bombing. For instance – video content has become an excellent medium to touch, feel and engage with the audience in this new normal. It has helped several brands in channelizing the content in a manner that helps in leverage relationship with customers. The quality of ads depends on how well the advertiser is capable of sending the message and how well the audience perceives the message. This is an opportunity for brands to understand and conceptualize ads as per needs.” The story is not over yet Mathias anticipates that things will change as we get deeper into the league. He said, “I would expect a few brands may release fresh creatives as the tournament progresses. Given that viewership of the IPL has been phenomenal in the first phase and the tournament will build up to the festive season – there should be better advertising on the anvil.” Chopra is hoping to see smaller brands shine on Disney+ Hotstar. “I’m rooting for the iconic equivalent of 'Flipkart Kids' from the ed-tech folks who’ve heavily invested in the IPL. It’s really their moment to own. As a footnote, I’d keep an eye on Disney+ Hotstar -- where smaller advertisers can express themselves efficiently with lower media spends,” said he.

And that is exactly what Vodafone Idea’s newly launched entity Vi has in mind. The rebranding of these two iconic brands was announced last week. To make people aware of this change, Vi has also launched a new campaign. The brand now has plans to use IPL to let people know about this transformation. Both Vodafone and Idea in the past have been closely associated with IPL and we wanted to understand how different things will be this year. From government scandals to celebrity gossip to gender equality, the Amul Girl has spoken about it all unabashedly and continues to be loved by different kinds of audiences for the same reason even today! We reached out to experts to understand what benefits a brand can reap by launching a mascot in today’s highly-cluttered landscape, what are some of the factors they should take into consideration and what should today's mascot look like and talk about. Experts opined that technological changes will come and go, but mascots will always offer a relatability factor -- a barrage of emotions packed in one image that helps connect the brand immediately with the audiences. Karthik Srinivisan, Brand Consultant and Social Media Expert, said, “There's nothing technological about mascots, as I see it. Regardless of where a mascot is used, in what kind of media, the primary purpose is to enhance memorability and association. Whether the mascot is depicted in a billboard, or a print ad, or TVC or an Instagram post, the basic purpose transcends technology and medium.” He said mascots offer higher recall value. “A mascot's purpose has always been to extend a brand's marketing effort. If the mascot enhances the memorability of the brand, or makes it more relatable, that is a good consideration for the mascot's need. The most basic things that a brand should consider fall under common sense - that the chosen mascot doesn't lead to any negative association or perception,” added Srinivasan. All mascots from the recent past like Harri, Dunya, ZooZoo and Fido are 3D illustrations that don’t just have a conversation and engage with consumers, they twirl, dance and even drive around on fictional streets. Albeit, experts we spoke to said dimensions don’t matter, message does. Ambi Parameswaran, Founder, Brand-Building.com said, “I am not sure if you can do better advertising simply because you can create a 3D image. I still believe the simple 2D of Amul Girl is one of my favourites.” Giving us an example, he said, “In recent times, Nippon Paint has used the colourful blobs, called Blobbies as an integral element on their campaign. These are 3D images that paint your walls and is an extension of something the brand has done abroad. I think the intelligent use of the mascots has helped the brand standout in the celebrity clutter that we see in all brand advertising, and also in paint advertising. I would rate it as a breakthrough in recent years.” “The mascot today becomes a bot when injected with technology. Interfaces can change, but the core persona of the bot must not,” seconds Harish Bijoor, Brand Guru &amp; Founder, Harish Bijoor Consults Inc, whose favourite brand mascot is Asian Paints' Gattu! Bijoor explained, “A Brand Mascot is a relationship that is forever. It is all about a more long-lasting engagement with the consumer than in the case of celebrities roped in to promote a brand. Keeping this in mind, it is important for mascots to embody the brand with a certain degree of personal integrity. Mascots must therefore embody within themselves the DNA of the brand in question. Integrity and a complete emotive-ability with the consumer is a core must.” Ronita Mitra, Founder and Chief Strategist, Brand Eagle Consulting said that even if the consumers move to a dominant digital environment, consumers will continue to remain humans and will always look for that human and emotional connect. Highlighting how mascots can be used to break clutter, Mitra said, “A mascot has the power to be leveraged across multi-media platforms from advertising to social media conversations to technology interfaces to activation programs as demonstrated effectively and endearingly by the Vodafone ZooZoos. While usage on one static medium such as packaging aids strengthening of the visual identity of brands, mascots are not done full justice when used that way. Relationships will continue to have a special place in consumers' lives, only the formats of engaging will evolve. The recent COVID lockdown times have shown how people from across the world have continued to strengthen their bonds leveraging technology. Mascots such as the Amul girl have shown that consumers do not tire themselves of relevant and engaging day to day conversations over decades.” Amul Girl steals the show Mascots can help personify the brand, maintain a voice, stand out in the clutter of celebrity endorsers, and establish the brand in an endearing, memorable and meaningful manner. Today, audiences also expect brands to have an opinion on political and social issues, stand for a cause and sell eco-friendly products. So, in today’s advanced social and technological landscape, what should your brand’s new mascot look like and talk about? All experts had one response to this question. This is mainly because unlike Asian Paints' Gattu or the Parle Girl, Amul has made contemporary use of their mascot in many kinds of topical situations through their everyday ads. Merely creating a logo and using it only in brand marketing is one thing, but Amul has gone beyond using it in marketing, and in a way made us think of Amul when we see the mascot in any context. That's the true success of a mascot - to bring people back to the brand every time they stumble on it even without the brand's name mentioned next to it,” said Srinivisan. “Mascots such as the Amul girl have shown that consumers do not tire themselves of relevant and engaging day to day conversations over decades,” said Mitra. So to conclude, experts said that a brand mascot should bring alive the brand narrative and its point-of-view. It will still help create a long-term relationship with your consumer if connected on a daily basis. Your brand would not have to worry about technological advancements and changing media landscape, mascots can be omnipresent and immortal.

Believe it or not, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Vodafone+India&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Vodafone</a> is the only national brand to be associated with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Indian+Premier+League&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">IPL</a> since its inception way back in 2008.

Vodafone to sponsor IPL for the 9th
consecutive year

The pug that had become the face of <keyword id="15492" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vodafone">Vodafone</keyword> would be back as the mascot in the telecom company’s new brand campaign before the Indian Premier League cricket tournament this year. The company is considering SuperNet it as its first 360 degree campaign, the objective of which is to highlight the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Vodafone-Launches-High-speed-3G-Wi-Fi-Dongle-At-Rs-2399/articleshow/41684104.cms">3G and 4G improvements</a> that have been put into place by the Britain-headquartered company. 
 
"We are bringing back our favourite icon Pug which symbolises Vodafone's network expanse and quality to reinforce the brand promise of staying always connected. This campaign is one of our 'gold campaigns' and will have a good 360 mix of communication across mediums," a Vodafone India spokesman said. 
 
The campaign has come at the time of company's yearly practice of launching a campaign, earmarking about a fifth of its advertising <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Vodafone-India-Revenues-Are-Up-By-13-5/articleshow/25650838.cms">budget </a>along with being the title sponsor for the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Sponsorship-slots-and-spot-rates-take-a-leap-for-the-upcoming-season-of-IPL/articleshow/50820713.cms">cricket tournament IPL</a>. 
 Talking of the canine mascot, it had originally featured in Vodafone advertisements as the follower of its young master everywhere he went. The pug was later replaced by balloon-bodied ZooZoos. A person aware of the developments also told ET that there are chances of the Zoozoos and the pug coming together for this <keyword id="6354312" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IPL">IPL</keyword>.

Advertisements featuring the cricketers with new slogans for each time have already hit television screens across the country. The enormous popularity of the Indian Premier League – the 20-over cricket match with players from across country teams – is evident in the sold out stands seen at stadiums, high television ratings and recurring prime time slots, with nearly half of the audience being women. Yet, the majority of Indian commercials aired during IPL continue to target just men, a reflection of the typical gender stereotyping still common among advertisers. Even a cursory look at the latest numbers on viewership should make Indian brands sit up and evaluate why they need to switch their strategy – and do so urgently. According to a new report by BARC, IPL reaches to 77% more women than any primetime Hindi General Entertainment Channel (GEC). The report added that IPL reaches out to 262 million women in just 51 days as opposed to a top GEC channel which manages to garner 200 million in a year. Overall, women today hold a 47% television audience share during IPLs. It’s been 12 years since IPL launched and it still manages to be a big favourite of advertisers, attracting big spends. An <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/services/advertising/rs-2000-cr-ad-spends-set-aside-for-ipl/articleshow/67767108.cms">ET</a> report states that for <keyword id="6128971" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ipl-2019">IPL 2019</keyword>, advertisers are expected to spend more than ₹2000 crore, which is a jump from Star India’s last year’s revenue of ₹1,750 crore from IPL ads. One of the most successful ad campaigns that took off during IPL is Vodafone Zoozoo. The Zoozoos took off from the second season of the IPL and also went on to win <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/latest-headlines/story/vodafones-zoozoo-campaign-wins-award-71192-2010-04-07">awards</a> for successful marketing strategy. Even startups like Swiggy witnessed a <a href="https://www.exchange4media.com/ipl-news/swiggys-ipl-ad-campaign-yields-25growth-in-orders-during-ipl-90467.html">growth</a> of 25% thanks to their advertising during the IPL matches. Brands can no longer ignore Indian women during the country's most popular sporting event

<ul><li>The Womb hasn’t ever pitched to its clients except once. Its founders believe a solution cannot be presented in two weeks and not at least without spending enough time with the brand to find the roots of the problem. </li><li>The Womb’s focus this year is on understanding digital better, putting advertising back into boardroom meetings, alter metrics that are used to measure ad results, and earn more money whilst at it. </li><li><keyword id="2606474" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Navin-Talreja">Navin Talreja</keyword> and <keyword id="2606552" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kawal-Shoor">Kawal Shoor</keyword>, the two hearts of The Womb, discuss with us the importance of walking away from a meeting if wavelengths don’t match, fighting for equal status in boardrooms, changing the culture of agencies, revenue goals for the year, and much more. </li><li>The Womb is eyeing to close FY2020 with ₹20 crores.</li></ul>Over the years, agencies have time and again complained about the complexities of the pitching process. Most believe that the ball is always in the client's court as they get access to an array of ideas for free. For agencies, on the other hand, the stakes are high as it is expensive, time-consuming and often ends up in idea theft. It’s impossible to know if you are matching the right talent and capabilities to a task when the screening process is a form-filling exercise. In this constantly changing landscape and competitive environment, The Womb is an agency that hasn’t pitched to its clients except once. The founders, who come from Ogilvy, have mustered the courage to say no, even if it means turning down a huge amount of money if the client doesn’t appreciate their work culture. Hence, they call them believers, not clients. They think it is impossible to find a solution in the first meeting without having deep-dived into the problem first. In relationship building meetings, the founders discuss the problems, try to pin down the challenges and drawing from their 25 years of experience, present a few opportunities. And if the clients look for a solution prima facie, they have the will to walk away. Is it challenging, I ask Navin Talreja, Co-founder, The Womb. He says, “It's challenging if your priority is money but if it is great work, then it's not. If you have targets like 'I have to grow 30% this year', then it's challenging.” “It's not that we don't have a vision of what the size of the agency should be, in terms of revenue, but our way to get there in our heads is very clear -- if you do great work with a lot of integrity, people will come to you. We follow an old word-of-mouth or recommendation strategy and with this, the client will come and the money will follow,” adds Talreja. In its five years of existence, The Womb has bagged 15 ‘believers.’ However, they charge a little more than Ogilvy and Lowe Lintas for their ‘premium services’; look for newer challenges, take a longer time in building the pillars and establishing the relationship and are extremely proud of the way they function. “We don't want to be a part of the 'herd'. So we could have grown 30-40% faster if we had pitched and if we had done a lot of work that other agencies and startups do,” says Kawal Shoor, Co-founder. However, Shoor believes this is also a smarter way of functioning because clients come on-board only when they trust The Womb completely. “Clients have not heard this language from agencies before. Our words, our language, our culture may sound new but this was how it was supposed to be anywhere. Right?”, asks Talreja. It is perhaps this work culture that gives The Womb an edge in the market. They have an office in Mumbai and are a small team of 34 employees today. When asked about the expansion plan, Shoor says, “I don't think we're moving into new offices in India for sure. Somewhere else is all in the future, which we haven't planned as we don't plan too much. Opening multiple offices is largely based on ego, not practicality because in today's day and age, you don't need many offices, you can work even globally sitting here in India.” Sharing the load equally By staying true to their practices, the founders wish to put advertising into the boardrooms and help CMOs gain their lost prominence. “Advertising and marketing is not part of boardroom conversations. CMOs have lost their influence in their own organisations. And it is our work and the kind of work that we do that can give them back their strength in the boardroom,” explains Shoor. Agencies often put half the pressure on clients. They take responsibility for communications but they sidestep from shaping the other three p’s. The Womb is hoping to change this. They advise their clients and help build the image coherently. Explaining how, Shoor says, “It is our job to help clients grow their businesses. The industry says that it is only for the brand but I think we are shirking our responsibility, which is also why clients don't think of agencies as important, because their job is to grow the business. So if you're saying I'm not responsible to help you grow the business, then they look elsewhere.” Changing how the agency ecosystem functions When radio went out of fashion, TV came out and not too many people knew how to do TV ads. Agencies would do some radio ads and add visuals on it for TV. Before the agencies realised, the whole of India had moved to TV and it took about five-six years for agencies to adapt. Similarly, this year, Shoor feels agencies will start truly understanding the dynamics of digital media and adapting to it. Another thing that Shoor believes should change is the way the ad industry is ‘obsessed with intermediate results'. The common practice is to measure the comps results, attitudinal results or brackman scores, take a few personality tests, etc. “I don't think you're spending enough time looking at what are the metrics that really matter, which are either top line growth or market share game or bottom line profitability and all of this converting into some sense of shareholder growth, which has indicated and shaped us in the past. However, the pressure to deliver numbers has to exist. It’s just that the short-term-ness of that expectation is a worry. So if you keep looking at your numbers every fortnight, you're not giving your work a chance to succeed. At the same time, I'm also saying that a good campaign does not take a year or two to show results,” says Shoor. The Womb’s 25-seconder "Fogg chal raha hai' campaign resulted in the client’s market share going up and that’s how the results should be measured, agree both founders. Talreja shares that even after a year, every time they run Fogg’s campaign, its shares soar up. Digital marketing, thus should be about building an idea that lasts longer such as Vodafone’s ZooZoos, say the founders. Talreja also brings up another reason which is given in review meetings for measuring the impact TV ads have, that is, ‘emotions can't be delivered in a 30-second spot.' He says that a brand doesn’t need a 360-degree media plan to make itself visible, sometimes, they just need a 20-degree plan. Agencies end up spilling the client’s money with this common mistake. Therefore, whilst strategising, Talreja asks himself and his team, “How do you deliver the message without losing out on the clutter-breaking ability, the brand building ability, the business-creation ability, without losing on comprehension, or impact or emotional affinity, in the shortest possible time -- and that's the challenge we've given ourselves.” Advantages of starting a new agency Shoor says he feels like a teenager again every day at work. He is often excited and more patient. He believes it helps to be smaller because they are more connected with clients and are open to unlearning the ‘set ways of succeeding'. “It is in a way like you went back into a reverse gear in terms of age -- unlearning and learning a few things. We've now realised that brands are just a currency for organisations to engage with people. The core point is how do organisations engage with people? And how do you create new behaviours among people so that clients benefit. So there have been a lot of those kinds of new learnings,” shares Shoor. Talreja, on the other hand, says that unlearning and being agile works on the lower end of jobs. But what comes first in any new client relationship is that you have to be right. Therefore, sometimes agility is overrated but you need agility for day-to-day jobs like the poster or dangler you make -- because those needs are sometimes last minute and on the top tasks, you need to invest time and do your homework and go in-depth to understand every aspect before you come up with a solution,” explains Talreja. Roadmap ahead for The Womb The Womb is eyeing to close FY2020 with at least ₹20 crores, which is about ₹60-65 lakhs productivity per person. The agency has achieved this high productivity by only hiring employees with a minimum experience of four years. When asked if it’s their bias against the freshers or lack of willingness to train, the founders deny and say that they want to add value in every conversation they have with their clients instead, which comes with certain stature and experience. Talreja and Shoor have set a two-year goal for themselves. They want to change the conversation on effectiveness, help marketing stop being seen as a cost-centre for companies and as an investment in business growth. “Hopefully, we will also make a little more money along the way,” Talreja breaks into a chuckle. To sum it all up, the founders say all they have done till now is take baby steps towards bringing back the respect that the advertising industry has lost in the years gone by.
