Online food delivery platform <keyword id="6358977" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="swiggy" source="Orion">Swiggy</keyword>'s losses doubled to ₹3,629 crore in FY22 compared to ₹1,617 crore in the last fiscal year. Total expenses went up 131% to ₹9,574.5 crore in FY22. According to its annual financial statement with the Registrar of Companies (RoC), during the last quarter of FY22, Swiggy turned "decacorn" (with a valuation of $10 billion and above) after raising a $700 million round led by Invesco. Meanwhile, Swiggy's revenue grew 2.2 times to ₹5,705 crore during FY22 as opposed to ₹2,547 crore in FY21. According to Entrackr, outsourcing support costs accounted for 24.5% of the total expenses of the company. This particular cost increased 2.3 times to ₹2,350 crore in FY22 from ₹1,031 crore in FY21. Its advertising and promotional expenses surged 4 times to reach ₹1,848.7 crore during FY22, according to the report. Reports surfaced last month that Swiggy may lay off more than 250 employees or up to 5% of its workforce starting January. "There have been no layoffs at Swiggy. We concluded our performance cycle in October and have announced ratings and promotions at all levels. As with every cycle, we expect exits based on performance," a Swiggy spokesperson had said in a statement. The upcoming layoffs are likely to impact Swiggy's quick commerce delivery service <keyword id="9728281" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="instamart" source="Orion">Instamart</keyword> to reduce cash burn. In November, global brokerage firm <keyword id="151304" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jefferies" source="Orion">Jefferies</keyword> said that Swiggy was fast losing market share to its rival <keyword id="11830133" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="zomato" botkeyword="" source="ET" sourcekeytype="COMPANY" meta.keywordsubtype="EQ" meta.aliasname="zomato" meta.entityname="Zomato Ltd." meta.entityid="57948" meta.seoname="zomato-ltd">Zomato</keyword> despite offering heavy discounts. Citing Swiggy investor Prosus' financial report, Jefferies said that the gross value of Swiggy's food delivery business was $1.3 billion in the January-June period this year. Zomato in the same period logged a gross order volume of $1.6 billion. In May last year, Swiggy acquired Dineout, a dining-out and restaurant tech platform, for an undisclosed sum. According to sources, the acquisition size was around $200 million. Earlier this year, the food delivery platform raised $700 million led by Invesco at a $10.7 billion valuation. Swiggy's losses jump 2X to ₹3,629 crore in FY22, layoffs coming

The year 2023 has become the worst year for tech employees as nearly 2 lakh tech employees -- from Big Tech firms to startups -- have been sacked to date globally, as companies like Meta, BT, Vodafone and many others announced further plans to lay off more employees in coming months. As per the data by layoffs tracking site Layoffs.fyi, 695 tech companies have shown the doors to around 1.98 lakh employees so far this year. In comparison, 1,046 tech companies laid off more than 1.61 lakh employees in 2022. In January alone this year, close to 1 lakh tech employees lost jobs globally, dominated by companies like Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Salesforce and others. In total, about 3.6 lakh tech employees have now lost their jobs in 2022 and till May this year. As more and more Big Tech companies continue to sack employees, they listed various reasons behind the move -- over-hiring, uncertain global macroeconomic conditions, strong tailwinds from the Covid-19 pandemic and more. Meta (formerly Facebook) is reportedly going to start laying off more employees next week in its third round of <keyword id="30690" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="job-cuts" source="Orion">job cuts</keyword>. While the exact number has not been confirmed, it is expected that the company will lay off approximately 6,000 employees in this round. Amazon India laid off around 400-500 employees from its Cloud division AWS as well as People Experience and Technology Solutions (PXT) or HR and support verticals this month. Fintech unicorn Zepz is laying off 420 employees, or 26 per cent of its workforce. The UK telecommunication giant BT Group has announced plans to slash a massive 55,000 jobs by the end of the decade. Global telecom carrier Vodafone said it plans to reduce 11,000 jobs over the next three years, with an aim to "simplify" both headquarters and local markets. Meanwhile, Microsoft will not give any raise to salaried employees, including senior leaders, this year as global macroeconomic conditions continue to haunt Big Tech. 2 lakh techies lost jobs in 2023, more to come

New Delhi, After an entrepreneur complained in a LinkedIn post that a <keyword id="830092" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="zomato" source="Orion">Zomato</keyword> delivery agent advised him to cheat the company by paying some money directly to him and enjoy the food, the company's Founder and CEO <keyword id="476451" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="deepinder-goyal" source="Orion">Deepinder Goyal</keyword> said he is "aware" of this fraud and is "working to plug the loopholes". Vinay Sati posted that a Zomato delivery agent suggested that from next time, pay him Rs 200 or Rs 300 and enjoy food worth Rs 1,000. "Aap bas mujhe 200rs, 300rs de dena or 1000rs ke khane ke maje lena," Sati quoted the agent as saying in the post. The agent allegedly told him that "I will show it to Zomato that you have not taken the food but will also give you the food you ordered". "I got goosebumps hearing what scam is happening with Zomato," posted Sati. He ordered some Burger King burgers from Zomato and made the online payment. "And as soon as the delivery boy came after 30-40 minutes, he told me that sir, don't pay online next time," said the entrepreneur. "He said that next time when you will order food worth 700-800rs through COD (cash on delivery) you only have to pay Rs 200 for that." Sati said: "Deepinder Goyal ji, now don't say that you don't even know that this is happening?" Goyal replied: "Aware of this and working to plug the loopholes". Zomato CEO says aware of fraud at delivery agents' end, fixing it

They are in the spotlight yet again, after their mixed performance during the December quarter. Fintech companies like Paytm and PB Fintech have not only reported better than expected earnings but also narrowed their losses significantly. Zomato and Nykaa did not deliver overall improvement in financials, but analysts remain optimistic. Another new age company among talks is hyperlocal delivery startup Dunzo with elevated losses and massive valuation. Billionaire and chairperson of RPG Group highlighted the financials of the company <a href="https://twitter.com/hvgoenka/status/1625843597626183680">in a tweet </a>on February 15. “New age digital stocks are not doing great primarily because the market is not doing great. India is underperforming this year with a negative 2.34 % return YTD while markets like China, HongKong and South Korea are doing very well. When India’s underperformance changes, new age digital companies also will start performing. Some results from this segment are very good like Paytm. Zomato also has done reasonably well, but Nykaa’s results came below expectations,” said Dr V K Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit Financial Services. New age technology companies have been under the scanner because of the massive underperformance in their share prices due to elevated valuation. The growth was driven by pick up in merchant subscription revenues and loan distribution. “Biggest surprise is distribution business, control of cashbacks, opex,” said Macquarie in a report. Shares of the company rose nearly 22% from February 3 when it reported its quarterly earnings. Macquarie has upgraded rating on the company’s stock to ‘Outperform’ from ‘Underperform’ with a target price of ₹800. “PayTM has positively surprised on the distribution of financial services revenue by a wide margin and has also managed to control overall expenses and charges. At the time of listing, profit and free cash flow were not even a part of management’s discussion. However, we see a very visible change in approach of management to deliver profit, evidenced, we believe, by the core EBIDTA profitability that was reported recently,” said Macquarie in a report. Zomato: A promising road to profitability Zomato reported better than expected Q3 FY23 revenues, and analysts believe it may reach profitability by the end of the current financial year. “Depending on execution-related wins, the company (ex of quick commerce) may clock profitability in Q4FY23 itself, two quarters ahead of their guidance,” said analysts at Nuvama Institutional Equities. “Zomato’s road to profitability has grown even more promising. Zomato (ex-quick commerce) clocked adj. EBITDA level profitability in the month of Jan-23. Depending on execution-related wins, the company (ex of quick commerce) may clock profitability in Q4FY23 itself, two quarters ahead of their guidance,” added the report. Analysts say Zomato’s relaunch of its Gold membership plan should bring growth back. Most brokerage houses have <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/no-long-tail-effect-zomato-banks-on-demand-recovery-in-future-even-as-it-shuts-operations-in-225-cities-on-poor-performance/articleshow/97907071.cms">maintained a ‘Buy’ rating </a>on the company’s stock. “The fact that most of these companies have put forth their strategy to cut down losses and become profitable in the near future builds hope for investors. For example, Zomato’s decision to cut operations in 225 smaller cities. Moreover, since most of these <keyword id="10951575" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-age-tech-companies" source="Orion">new age tech companies</keyword> are direct consumer based there are expectations of inflation cooling down and boosting consumer spend.” Shrikant Chouhan, head of equity research (retail) at Kotak Securities told Business Insider India. Nykaa: Premium valuation reflects solid outlook, say analysts Nykaa, reported a 70% on year decline in net profit in Q3 <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/corporates/news/nykaas-stock-plunges-4-2-after-its-q3-net-profit-slips-70/articleshow/97901748.cms">missing analysts expectations</a>. Despite this, brokerages believe the best is yet to come for the company. During a post-earnings conference call Falguni Nayar, executive chairperson, MD and CEO of Nykaa said that although inflationary pressures were present, it wasn’t that big of an issue for many of Nykaa’s customers. Q3 is considered to be a seasonal quarter for the company because of the festive season and despite macro challenges Nykaa’s growth was applauded by analysts. “In a quarter rampaged by a tougher macroeconomic environment, Nykaa reported substantial growth in Q3FY23 numbers,” said a report by JM Financial. The brokerage firm has assigned a ‘Buy’ rating on the stock. “We continue to see increased strength of the dominant positioning in beauty and personal care (BPC) vertical while the newcomer, fashion vertical, has gained market share at the cost of a sharp dip in contribution margin,” added the report. Nykaa’s EBITDA margins came under pressure and fell to 5.3% in Q3, as against 6.3% in the same period last year. “While we expect Nykaa’s GMV growth, at 35% in FY23E-25E, to be the highest within our global ecommerce coverage, we believe Nykaa’s valuation premium (FY24 EV/GMV of 3.1x vs 0.5x median for peers) already reflects this solid growth outlook and Nykaa’s stronger margin profile,” said a report by Goldman Sachs. The investment banker has assigned a ‘Neutral’ rating on the stock. PB Fintech on course to profitability soon The December quarter performance of PB Fintech, the parent company of Policybazaar and Paisabazaar, was another surprise for investors as the company narrowed its losses significantly. Its insurance premiums jumped 70.3% on year to ₹30.3 billion driven by a strong showing across segments. “Given its market share of 90%-plus in online insurance sales and a growing offline presence, PB is poised to post strong sales,” said analysts at Nuvama Institutional Equities. Further, the management expects revenue and margins to improve further as agent productivity rises and benefits of appointments channel are realised. They hinted at a sharp profitability uptick in Q4, say analysts. “This growth becomes even more impressive considering the seasonally weak Q3 for insurance, where new business premiums for life and general insurance declined QoQ by 19% and 12%, respectively,” said a report by JM Financial. They also announced an 11% pay cut for the remaining employees who are earning ₹10 lakh per annum or more. “Given the current economic climate, like other businesses, we’ve evaluated our strategic priorities. This move comes months after the startup raised $800 million as fresh funding in April this year, led by CPP Investments. Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Board, Sumeru Ventures and Luxor Capital, Sofina Group and Baillie Gifford also participated in the funding round. Bedi further said that the next year will be tough and the measures taken will help the company to sustain in the market. “We have exercised fiscal and employee prudence, and implemented an 11% salary cut for individuals with annual salaries of ₹10 lakh or more,” Bedi added. Info Edge has lost over $1.2 billion on its investment in Zomato, PolicyBazaar

New Delhi, May 15 () Online restaurant guide and food ordering platform Zomato on Friday said it is going to layoff around 13 per cent of its workforce on account of the impact of COVID-19 pandemic. The company has around 4,000 employees in different roles. In a blog post, Zomato Founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal said multiple aspects of the company's business have changed dramatically over the last couple of months and many of these changes are expected to be permanent. "While we continue to build a more focussed Zomato, we do not foresee having enough work for all our employees. We owe all our colleagues a challenging work environment, but we won't be able to offer that to around 13 per cent of our workforce going forward," he added. Everyone who is impacted will get invites for a zoom call with the leadership team within the next 24 hours, he said. Goyal said he along with COO and co-founder Gaurav Gupta and CEO Food Delivery Mohit Gupta would be getting on video calls over the next couple of days with impacted employees to walk them through the next steps and help find them jobs as soon as possible. On the financial support to these employees, he said: "All our employees who no longer have any work at Zomato, will continue to be with us at 50 per cent salary for the next 6 months. During this time, outside of the handover period of 1-2 weeks, we expect these folks to spend 100 per cent of their time and energy towards looking for jobs outside of Zomato". Goyal also said the company will provide them outplacement support and also health insurance for 6 months or as soon as they find another job. Previously allocated employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs) will continue to vest during this period of 6 months, he added. Goyal also said,"Starting June, I am proposing a temporary reduction in pay for the entire organisation. Lower cuts are being proposed for people with lower salaries, and higher cuts (up to 50 per cent) for people with higher salaries". According to the data compiled by Crunchbase, more than 32,000 workers in the US tech sector have been laid off in mass job cuts, as of late July. "We've included both startups and publicly traded companies that are based in the US. We've also included companies based elsewhere that have a sizable team in the United States, such as Klarna," the analysis said. The layoff includes ride-sharing platform Uber, <keyword id="128682" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="netflix" source="Orion">Netflix</keyword> and several cryptocurrency exchanges and lending platforms. In India, more than 25,000 startup workers have lost jobs since the pandemic began -- and more than 11,500 have been fired this year.
