Thanks to new technologies, animals are not only healthier and more productive, but the livelihood of many people in poorer parts of the world is also improving," believes Kristin Peck, President of <keyword id="1184921" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zoetis">Zoetis</keyword>. <ul><li>Zoetis has annual revenues of around USD 6 billion and employs more than 10,000 people worldwide. </li><li>The need for productivity and efficiency in animal husbandry has never been greater than now, says Peck.</li><li>Peck actively supports women. She is the author of the book "Perseverance" about motherhood. Together with her husband, she has gone through a long and traumatic journey, including five miscarriages, several infertility treatments and a story with a murderous nurse.</li></ul>Out of love for animals Zoetis is the world's largest manufacturer of vaccines and medicines for domestic and farm animals. Since January 2020, it has been headed by Kristin Peck. Previously, she led the company's global production and supply organisation, and from 2015 she was head of the company in the USA. Since 2018, Peck also managed the company's corporate strategy and development activities, including acquisitions. Kristin Peck grew up on her parents' farm in Connecticut, surrounded by dogs, cats, horses and birds who were treated like family members. Her mother bred Morgan horses and her father helped organise the rodeo. Her first job, still in high school, was with Zoetis, which she manages today. In an interview for the American “Successful Farming” magazine, she stresses that at some point in her life she realised how important it is for people to create new jobs. - As a Georgetown University student reading History and Spanish, I spent a semester teaching Spanish to children in Ecuador. I took care of them and taught them the language so that their parents could find work. I soon realised that learning Spanish would not improve the future of these children if there was not enough economic growth to employ their families in these areas. That led me to take the business path as a way of creating opportunities for people," says Peck. In an interview with the 'SF', the President of Zoetis points out that the need for productivity and efficiency in animal husbandry has never been greater than it is today, because the constraints resulting from the pandemic, the growing world population and the need to tackle environmental problems are still growing. The future lies in digital solutions. Sensors provide more information about the health of farm animals, and genetic testing is becoming increasingly important as producers can choose the healthiest and most resistant animal breeds. - We also see greater emphasis on reducing the carbon footprint. We are trying to help producers improve production while using less resources to keep healthier and more productive animals. This is all thanks to new technologies and much better production methods. Those used in recent decades show the power of science and technology. In the 1970s, American farmers had to raise 140 million heads of cattle in order to meet consumer demand for beef. Today it is 90 million. Between 1964 and 2014, the amount of greenhouse gases associated with the production of a glass of milk decreased by 50%. Thanks to genetics, data, technology and new innovations, we will be able to improve the sustainability of livestock production," says Peck. One example of the impact of science and technology on human life is the African Livestock Productivity and Health Advancement (ALPHA) programme run by Zoetis in sub-Saharan Africa. Under this initiative, Zoetis is increasing the availability of veterinary medicines, establishing permanent diagnostic networks and providing training and education to local farmers. In these areas, the population is extremely dependent on their livestock. It often turns out that a lack of vaccination, or an incompetent diagnosis of the disease leading to the infection of animals, means hunger for the entire families. Zoetis during COVID-19 Zoetis, like most companies in the world, faces the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic. Kristin Peck had to face it less than three months after she took over the company. Zoetis is a big organisation. It has annual revenues of around USD 6 billion and employs over 10,000 people worldwide. As the analysts stress, the company has a very balanced revenue policy, as it is divided 50/50 in terms of products for pets and livestock. Unlike many pharmaceutical companies, Zoetis is not dependent on any particular product. The best-selling drug, Apoquel, generated less than 10% of all sales in 2019. Kristin Peck pointed out at the results conference that Zoetis expects worse figures this year, because some 3% of sales used to come from the Chinese market, and the global economic slowdown could affect the results. But Peck doubts that the coronavirus will stop the long-term trend of eating more protein. Even if it does, Zoetis will benefit from selling its products aimed at poultry. Kristine Peck and helping women Kristine Peck received the “Feather In Her Cap 2019” award for her involvement in the development of her employees, launching a leadership programme at Zoetis that provides training, mentoring and participation in strategic projects. Kristin Peck is also personally a mentor for many women in Zoetis. Peck herself has written a book on motherhood and her experiences with it. Together with her husband, she has gone through a long and traumatic journey, including five miscarriages, a surrogate mother's miscarriage, several infertility treatments and a story with a murderous nurse. Kristin Peck has two children today. In her book she encourages women never to give up their dreams of building a family. - Many women go through the same things, but do not talk about it. Therefore, the aim of this book is to help women who have fertility problems so that they do not feel lonely, and to build a certain dialogue about this," says Peck. The book was based on Kristin's notes, which her husband encouraged her to record. Peck wrote down all of her thoughts and poured difficult emotions on paper. The e-book was published by Kindle Publishing. President Zoetis points out in her memoirs that she wanted sympathy from those around her, but often received good advice in return, which was neither helpful nor comforting. "'People often said to me: You need to relax, some things could work properly, if it were not for your stress. I just wanted to hear: I'm sorry, I love you. I am here for you. What can I do to help you?" - writes Peck. All the proceeds from the book are donated to charity. Valeant has reportedly poached a new CFO from the animal-health company Zoetis

Shares of the company, which were halted pending news, are down slightly as the company is holding its investor day presentation.
In a <a href="http://news.zoetis.com/press-release/events/zoetis-outlines-strategy-and-initiatives-underway-drive-growth-and-create-share">release this afternoon</a>, the company said that in 2015 it expects to report adjusted earnings per share of $1.61-$1.68, below the $1.71 Wall Street had been looking for.
The company said that in 2015, revenue is expected to come between $4.85-$4.95 billion, just a hair below the $4.96 billion expected by Wall Street.
In a statement, the company's CFO CFO Paul Herendeen said, "Below the revenue line, we expect to generate modest improvements in gross margin in the near term before accelerating after 2017. After 2015, we expect to keep our operating expense growth in the range of the inflation rate. Considering all of these factors, we believe Zoetis is a company that can grow adjusted net income in the low, double-digits over the long term."
Earlier on Tuesday, the company announced a $500 million share repurchase plan. 
Zoetis is an animal health company in which activist hedge fund manager Bill Ackman recently took a 10% stake. Many see the company seen as a potential takeover target. 
Yesterday, Allergan - the Botox-maker that Ackman had taken a large stake in as part of his effort to acquire the company with pharmaceutical company Valeant - agreed to be acquired by Actavis in a deal worth about $219 per Allergan share.
That agreement put Ackman in-line to turn a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/bill-ackman-allergan-stake-profits-2014-11">profit north of $2 billion</a>.

By the end of the year, Lood said she expects 450 zoo animals to receive the two doses, three weeks apart, according to the same article. "When animals are in our care, it's important to do everything we can to keep them healthy and happy," Chris Enright, the veterinarian at the Assiniboine Park Zoo in Winnipeg, one of the six receiving the donation, told Ottawa Citizen. "There's an important role for vaccinations to play in this effort, including the emerging animal-specific COVID-19 vaccination."Big cats, apes, otters, and hyenas are some zoo animals that are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-outbreak-iowa-deer-reservoir-covid-19-2021-11">susceptible to the virus</a>, according to Ottawa Citizen. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/can-pets-get-or-spread-coronavirus-experts-say-no-2020-3">Pets can get it too</a>, but they're considered low-risk cases, Lood told Ottawa Citizen, adding that if that changes, Zoetis will rapidly develop a vaccine for domestic animals.Zoetis has been working on the vaccine since a dog in Hong Kong was diagnosed with COVID-19 in February 2020, Ottawa Citizen reports, and Zoetis donated its first doses for emergency use to great apes at the San Diego Zoo in January 2021. Last month, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/magazine/zoos-have-started-vaccinating-animals-against-the-coronavirus/2021/10/21/e07d6caa-26d0-11ec-9de8-156fed3e81bf_story.html">The Washington Post reported</a> that US zoos including Oakland, Denver, St. Louis and the Smithsonian's National Zoo have all started to receive vaccines from Zoetis, and vaccination administers are using treats from ice cream to marshmallows to get the animals, from lions to tigers and bears, to oblige. Unlike the human COVID-19 vaccine, Zoetis said the animal version doesn't use a live virus or messenger RNA, Lood told Ottawa Citizen. Zoos in Canada will give COVID-19 vaccinations to animals

In total, at least 13 gorillas at Atlanta Zoo tested positive were diagnosed after exhibiting symptoms of the disease, including coughing, nasal discharge, and changes to their appetite, zoo officials <a href="https://zooatlanta.org/press-release/update-on-zoo-atlanta-gorilla-population/">said in a statement</a>. Global Conservation and Wildlife Health Officer Nadine Lamberski told Insider in an interview that the "alarm bells" first went off when the zoo's 49-year-old silverback gorilla named Winston started coughing a few days after finding out one of their wildlife care specialists had Covid-19."As soon as we knew that an employee was positive, we were on high alert, so just that one or two coughs really sent the alarm bells off, and we immediately started to get the permissions necessary to submit samples for diagnostic testing," Lamberski said."We really had to divide and conquer it, and everybody had a different role," she said. Gorillas at the San Diego Zoo are the first non-humans to be vaccinated against COVID-19

In a <a href="http://assets.pershingsquareholdings.com/2014/09/Pershing-Square-2015-Annual-Letter-PSH-January-26-2016.pdf">letter to Pershing Square shareholders</a> published Tuesday, the hedge fund manager outlined a number of the struggles his firm faced in 2015. Among them was what Ackman described as a "missed opportunity to trim or sell outright certain positions that approached our estimate of intrinsic value."Said another way, Ackman didn't sell at the top. Ackman writes (emphasis ours):The first place to look for an explanation is mistakes we made in 2015, and we did make some important mistakes. Principally, we missed the opportunity to trim or sell outright certain positions that approached our estimate of intrinsic value. Our biggest valuation error was assigning too much value to the so-called "platform value" in certain of our holdings. We believe that "platform value" is real, but, as we have been painfully reminded, it is a much more ephemeral form of value than pharmaceutical products, operating businesses, real estate, or other assets as it depends on access to low-cost capital, uniquely talented members of management, and the pricing environment for transactionsAnd of course the most notable "platform" in Ackman's portfolio is that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ackman-worries-about-valeant-debt-2015-11">possessed by Valeant Pharmaceuticals</a>, Ackman's largest single holding.In his letter Ackman makes a nod towards the extensive rush of negative news that surrounded the company this fall which sent shares down about 60% from their all-time high.But another problem Ackman found himself with this year was an inability to bail on the Valeant position. As Ackman writes (again, emphasis ours):Our failure to sell [Valeant] stock wasn't entirely an unforced error as we found ourselves largely restricted from trading during this period. During the summer, we were made aware of a large potential transaction that Valeant was working on, and as a result, we were restricted from trading at a time when it would have been prudent to take some money off the table. In retrospect, in light of Valeant's leverage and the regulatory and political sensitivity of its underlying business, we should have avoided becoming restricted to preserve trading flexibility, or alternatively, we should have made a smaller initial investment in the company.Back in the summer <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-valeant-offers-to-buy-zoetis-wsj-2015-6">reports surfaced that Valeant</a> was working to acquire Zoetis, an animal-health company that was valued near $25 billion at the time.Ackman owns Zoetis - as of his <a href="http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1336528/000117266115002091/xslForm13F_X01/infotable.xml">most recent filing</a> with the SEC Ackman owned about $1.7 billion worth of the company - and therefore couldn't sell as Valeant made its approach to acquire the company. And so when your hands are tied - presumably because Ackman had information regarding the sale that could have prompted questions regarding insider trading were he to move either the Valeant or Zoetis position during deal talks - you're stuck with what Ackman (an avid tennis player) would call a "unforced error." But in his letter, Ackman doesn't think Pershing's poor performance were a result of his own mistakes but a mistake on behalf of the market. "We do not believe that our investment performance in 2015 was primarily due to unforced errors, but rather due mostly to the market's reappraisal of our holdings without a corresponding material diminution in their intrinsic value," Ackman writes."While stocks can trade at any price in the short term, it is rare for companies to trade at material discounts to intrinsic value for extended periods. Fortunately, the lessons we have learned in 2015 should be easy to avoid in the future."In 2015 Pershing Square fell 20.5% net of all fees, far underperforming the S&amp;P 500's 1.4% total return.And while of course the point of hedge fund is not to match or exceed the S&amp;P 500's return in all situations, falling 20% short of the benchmark stock index's performance is a major disappointment. What you need to know on Wall Street right now

Meanwhile, the price of oil fell again, with West Texas Intermediate crude falling more than 1.5% to back below $75.

1. On Tuesday morning we got <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/producer-price-index-november-18-2014-11">inflation data</a> from the producer price index, which showed that prices rose 0.2% month-on-month in October, beating expectations for a 0.1% decline. Excluding food and energy, prices rose 0.4%, topping estimates for a 0.1% increase, though these data were the result of a weird quirk. Ian Shepherdson at Pantheon Macro, in a note following the report, said that when crude oil falls, input costs to gas stations drop immediately, but retail prices adjust less quickly, therefore recording a temporary increase in the services component of PPI. Crude oil prices fell 9.8% month-on-month in October.
2. Data from the National Association of Home Builders showed that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nahb-housing-market-index-november-18-2014-11">homebuilder confidence</a> rose to 58 in November, up from 54 last month and just a point below September's reading of 59, which marked a post-crisis high. Shepherdson said the report showed a nice rebound, but cautioned that the long-term relationship between the index and official new home sales numbers has "substantially" overstated sales the past couple of years. 
3. Back in October, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/inflation-expectations-are-still-falling-2014-11">inflation expectations</a> in the form of "breakevens" were all the rage. Near the market bottom on October 15, breakevens had fallen back towards levels that in the past saw the Fed embark on a new round of quantitative easing. However, at the end of the month, the Fed elected to end QE, and while the stock market has bounced back to make new all-time highs, inflation expectations have tumbled back towards their mid-October lows. Just something to keep an eye on. 
4. Apple shares <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-price-target-raised-2014-11">climbed again</a> on Tuesday, adding more than 1% to close north of $115, as analysts continue to raise their price target on shares of the iPhone maker. Business Insider's Jay Yarow reported Tuesday that analysts at BTIG Research upped their price target on Apple to $135 from $128 for a new, innovative reason: selfies. The firm believes that the "selfie craze" and the enhanced camera features on iPhone 6 could serve as a positive catalyst for sales of the device. 
5. A new academic <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ceo-golf-rounds-indicate-poor-performance-2014-11">paper</a> suggests that if your company's CEO is playing lots of golf, your company could be underperforming. Among the report's finding are that the number of golf rounds a CEO is negatively correlated with changes in firm profitability, and that one S&amp;P 1500 CEO played 146 rounds during a fiscal year.
6. Zoetis, the animal health company that Bill Ackman <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/zoetis-shares-halted-pending-news-2014-11">holds a 10% stake in</a> said on Tuesday that its profit for 2015 would come in below expectations. Shares of Zoetis were halted for trade ahead of the announcement, as the company has been seen as a potential takeover target in the wake of Monday's news that Actavis would acquire Allergan, the Botox-maker that Ackman had been seeking to acquire with Valeant Pharmaceuticals.

Valeant got slaughtered on Tuesday after the company reported <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-valeant-cuts-2016-revenue-forecast-2016-3">fourth-quarter earnings results that fell below analysts expectations</a> and cut its revenue forecast for the year. The stock collapsed 51% on the news.The lowered revenue guidance adds to a tough run for Valeant, which has been sliding since late 2015 because of scrutiny in Washington, D.C., over drug-price increases and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/andrew-left-citron-research-2015-11">accusations from a short seller</a>. Just last month, the company confirmed that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-sec-is-investigating-valeant-2016-2">it was part of several ongoing investigations</a>.Ackman, a well-known activist investor, makes large, concentrated bets in a handful of companies. "Millennial dads are more engaged than ever in childcare and household responsibilities - and <a href="http://www.thenewdad.org/yahoo_site_admin/assets/docs/BCCWF_The_New_Dad_2014_FINAL.157170735.pdf">an ever-rising share of them believe that companies should offer paid leave</a>," says Isaacs."Paternity leave (which is not 'time off') is important for a number of reasons. There is an increasing body of evidence behind the importance of father-child bonding beginning in the first few weeks," he adds.
