Kamath, in a blog post, outlined the challenges ahead, which could result in a <keyword id="20168027" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="revenue-drop" source="keywords">revenue drop</keyword> of up to 50% as Zerodha faces a combination of stricter regulations and shifting market conditions. <h2>Zerodha braces for revenue drop</h2>One of the main concerns for Zerodha is the new Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) regulation, which will be implemented on October 1, 2024. Kamath expects a 10% dip in revenue as the "true-to-label" circular is enforced. This change will impose stricter guidelines on brokers like Zerodha regarding the kind of financial products they offer, potentially limiting some of their key revenue-generating activities. Another significant factor affecting Zerodha’s future revenue is the ongoing review of index derivatives regulations. Index derivatives, which are a crucial part of Zerodha's business model, could soon face changes that might severely impact the company’s earnings. Kamath estimates that such modifications could reduce earnings by 30-50%. Additionally, with the <keyword id="20930760" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Securities-Transaction-Tax" source="keywords">Securities Transaction Tax</keyword> (STT) set to rise in October 2024, the costs of futures trading could further impact Zerodha’s profitability, though the effect on options trading may be limited. Zerodha is also set to face revenue pressures due to changes in Annual Maintenance Charges (AMC) under the new Basic Services Demat Account (BSDA) thresholds. From October 2024, brokers will only be able to charge full AMC fees from customers with holdings of ₹10 lakhs or more, up from ₹4 lakhs currently. Combined with Zerodha's removal of account opening fees, this is expected to significantly impact their revenue. Yet another challenge comes from Zerodha’s decision to halt payouts from its referral program. The program, which incentivised customers to refer others to the platform, will now only allow payouts to Authorised Persons (AP) registered with exchanges. This new regulation limits the number of people who can refer customers, slowing the firm's growth. <h2>Zerodha's financial results</h2>Despite these looming challenges, Zerodha posted strong financial results for the fiscal year 2024. The firm recorded a 62% increase in profits, reaching ₹4,700 crore, with revenue climbing by 21% to ₹8,320 crore. Traders using Zerodha's platform are also sitting on over ₹1 lakh crore in unrealised profits, largely driven by strong market performance and increased retail participation. However, Kamath also cautioned that the profitability boost in recent years has been fuelled by a bull market, which could reverse at any time. If the market turns, Zerodha, like many other financial service providers, may face significant challenges. To prepare for such an eventuality, the company has built up a strong financial position, with Kamath stating that their net worth now stands at nearly 40% of the customer funds they manage.

The device features a touch screen with unlimited in-built guided recipes, coupled with a jar which heats and cooks, and offers controlled chopping, stirring and other culinary functions. The recently raised funds will be utilized to execute the go-to-market strategy of its Made in India device, delishUp. The startup aims to make cooking healthy, easy and accessible for millennials and Gen-Z. “Everyone knows the best way to manage your health is to eat home cooked food, and with this new funding we are looking forward to taking delishUp to consumers across the country. Most other services available in the market focus on the exercise or ‘calories out’ options, but nearly none of them are offering users the superpower to take control of ‘calories in’,” said Mahek Mody, co-founder and CEO at Up. The device has been tested in over 250 Indian homes and kitchens and will begin deliveries in December this year. Consumers from the brand’s beta testing program also turned into mini-angel investors, the company said. With this device, the company claims that people with no experience in the kitchen can also cook without any hassle. The company says that the recipes on the ‘upliance’ have been designed in-house, taking into account ingredients that are easily available and their nutrition. It also has the macros and calories calculated for all meals. The connected features offer unlimited recipes, and added functions like grocery shopping, menu planning and more. “The next generation of smart and connected innovation will be designed to elevate the quality of our domestic lives. Two smoking hot IPOs choke India's largest broking site Zerodha

<ul><li><keyword id="35210" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sebi" source="Orion">SEBI</keyword> has put out a consultation paper on <keyword id="152818" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="algorithmic-trading" source="Orion">algorithmic trading</keyword> by retail investors yesterday.</li><li>The market regulator has suggested additional restrictions before executing an algo trade to which online broking firms providing such services have raised their concerns.</li><li><keyword id="6377626" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="algo-trading" source="Orion">Algo trading</keyword> means a sell/buy order gets executed automatically when the pre-defined levels are met.</li></ul>A consultation paper by India’s market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), that came out on December 9, regarding algorithmic trading by retail investors is a topic of concern for online trading platforms offering automated services to trade in the stock market. Algorithmic/algo trading means a sell/buy order gets executed automatically when the predefined levels are met. For example: You have 10 stocks of ABC company bought at ₹10 and you feel the stock will move up to ₹20. In such a case you can put an upper limit to the selling price and execute a trade beforehand. This sets you free from monitoring the stock every minute and executing the trade conveniently. So, definitely it feels like algo trading is the future, but apparently there are many concerns for the regulator regarding the misuse of such automated products especially by retail investors who have a small ticket size (average amount of investment). "This kind of unregulated/unapproved algos pose a risk to the market and can be misused for systematic market manipulation as well as to lure the retail investors by guaranteeing them higher returns. The potential loss in case of failed algo strategy is huge for retail investor [sic],” said SEBI in the consultation paper. Some of the key factors from <keyword id="12710158" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sebi-consultation-paper" source="Orion">SEBI consultation paper</keyword> that indicates it wants to control algo services for retail investors. <ul><li>Stock exchanges — BSE, NSE — should approve all algo trades before execution from stock brokers.</li><li>Stock exchanges need to develop a system to ensure that only those algos which are approved by the exchange and having unique algo ID provided by the exchange are being deployed.</li><li>Brokers shall also deploy suitable technological tools to ensure that appropriate checks are in place to prevent unauthorised altering/tweaking of algos.</li><li>All algos developed by any entity have to run on the servers of broker wherein the broker has control of client orders, order confirmations, margin information etc</li><li>Stock brokers need to have adequate checks in place so that the algo performs in a controlled manner.</li><li>Stock broker is responsible for all algos emanating from its application programming interface (APIs) and redressal of any investor disputes.</li></ul>SEBI has put out the paper to seek comments from various stakeholders including market intermediaries. One of the online broking platforms that offer algo services to investors says that SEBI may want to control the automated process. “SEBI has put [out] a consultation paper with the intent of curbing unregulated algo platforms that promise guaranteed returns. But the way it's planned will mean brokers will have to stop offering APIs. This will be 2 steps back in a tech-first future,” said Nithin Kamath, founder and chief executive officer (CEO) of <keyword id="759851" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="zerodha" source="Orion">Zerodha</keyword> in a tweet. Deepak Shenoy, founder and CEO at wealth management firm Capitalmind said the problem isn’t algorithms, it's the way humans are misusing the technology. “The problem wasn’t the algorithm. It did exactly what it was supposed to do. But the human thinking that technology could save the day was exactly what ruined the day. Too many people blindly relied on technology that didn't know how to deal with the compounding effects of its own actions,” said Shenoy. Head of investment platform Dhan — Pravin Jadhav — also shared his views on SEBI’s recommendations saying SEBI is not intending to ban it, but wants more accountability on such trades. “SEBI wants stock exchanges to know which orders are coming from where and how; as a regulator it is a very fair ask [sic]. If you are worried because you are doing something wrong, then you shouldn’t be doing that in the first place,” said Jadhav. SEBI’s growing concerns over misuse of the automated features to trade in stocks is in line with the increasing popularity of algo trading platforms especially for young investors. In the consultation paper, SEBI is asking brokers to get exchange approvals for every algo trade, which is ‘an extremely tedious and complex process’ as per Kamath. Disallowing APIs will just shift investors from using broker APIs to third party automation tools which aren't in the control of the brokers. API establishes an online connection between a data provider (i.e., stock broker) and an end-user (i.e., client). Tech-enabled broking firms like Zerodha raise concerns over SEBI’s views on algo trading

<ul><li>Indians are heavily <keyword id="35175" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="investing">investing</keyword> in <keyword id="373404" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Financial-Assets">financial assets</keyword> and bulk of that money is routed via startups like <keyword id="759851" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zerodha">Zerodha</keyword>, Upstox and others.</li><li>In the last two decades, financial <keyword id="41933" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="assets">assets</keyword> per adult in India gained 2%, while non-financial assets fell 8.4%, as per a Global Wealth Report 2021 by Credit Suisse.</li><li>Tech savvy broking firms like Zerodha, Upstox hold double digit market share in terms of number of unique investors as compared to traditional stock brokers like Motilal Oswal, Angel Broking.</li></ul>Financial assets in India have been on an uptrend in at least the last two decades as financial assets per adult in India have gained 2% between 2000 to 2020, while non-financial assets fell 8.4%, shows Global Wealth Report by Credit Suisse. The data indicates rising interest of individuals in financial assets like stocks, bonds, mutual funds. Adding to it, data from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) shows that in the year ended March 2020, the net financial assets in India — defined as gross financial assets less financial liabilities — jumped from ₹13.73 lakh crore in FY19 to ₹15.62 lakh crore in FY20 due to decline in borrowing from banks. Since interest rates have remained low in the country for quite some time, investors have shifted more savings towards soaring markets. Many new retail investors entered the industry in the last one year as interest rates kept depleting and markets kept surging. In fact, 14.2 million demat accounts have been opened in FY21, according to SEBI data. “The net financial assets of Indian households have grown due to fall in bank deposits and increase in investments. Lower interest rate environment, combined with friction-less access to financial markets due to fintech services and online brokers, is one of the key reasons for this spike in financial assets in India. As of January, India's total demat account stood at 51.5 million, a 26% increase compared to the end of FY20,” said Nikhil Kamath, cofounder of Zerodha. Most new investors that have come in the last one year are lured because of the record high Sensex/Nifty 50 levels and ease in opening a demat account, doing e-KYC through popular online trading platforms like Zerodha. Zerodha holds 18.85% market share with 33.9 lakh unique active investors followed by Upstox with 10.9% market share with19.6 lakh unique active investors, reveals data by stock market analytics platform Trade Brains. pandemic have attracted investors to financial markets. Besides, the investor is also evolving and naturally gravitating to financial assets due to higher transparency, standardisation, liquidity and strong regulatory environment as compared to non-financial assets,” said Sanyal. Ravi Kumar, founder and chief executive of Upstox feels that financial assets will continue to grow in the coming time as investors have learned the importance of investing. "Indians are increasingly preferring financial assets over physical assets. While non-financial assets give a sense of ownership, financial instruments such as mutual funds and equities are easy to liquidate. Also, due to the pandemic people have learnt the importance of investing, portfolio diversification, and hence financial assets will continue to grow in the future," said Kumar.
