Chandigarh, Jun 29 (PTI) The <keyword id="6354679" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gst" source="Orion">GST</keyword> Council on Wednesday deferred decision on levying a 28 per cent tax on casinos, online gaming, horse racing and lottery pending more consultations with stakeholders, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said. A group of ministers headed by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has been asked to consider submissions of stakeholders again on the valuation mechanism and submit its report by July 15, she told reporters here. The council will meet again in the first week of August to decide on the issue, she said. A two-day meeting of the panel considered a report of the GoM but deferred a decision as Goa and some others wanted to make more submissions. The GoM had recommended that online gaming should be taxed at the full value of the consideration, including the contest entry fee paid by the player on participating in the game. In cases of race courses, it had suggested that GST be levied on the full value of bets pooled in the totalisators and placed with the bookmakers. It also recommended that no distinction should be made on grounds of game of skill or game of chance for the purpose of the levy of GST and should be taxed at the highest rate of 28 per cent. May is the first month of 2022 when startups raised less than $2 billion

Briskly expanding his commodity trading company into a coal–to–port-to-energy conglomerate, he is the only Indian to have built not one, but seven companies with a market cap of one lakh crore,” said Anas Rahman Junaid, MD and chief researcher, Hurun India. The rapid rise in the value of his seven listed companies – nine now, with the addition of Ambuja Cements and ACC – has helped Adani zoom past Ambani. “In 2012, Adani’s wealth was hardly one-sixth of Ambani’s wealth and no one could imagine that he would overtake Ambani to become the richest man in India in ten years,” said Junaid. The report also said that India also gave a new number two, Gautam Adani, to the Hurun Global Rich List. So, what has changed in the last five years? Dhindsa believes that there are a lot more customers shopping for groceries online and so, even the smaller shopkeepers are ready to deliver for online orders. “Local partners and stores are much more willing to join the ecommerce revolution and really want to be a part of newage and technology businesses,” he noted. And it’s not just Grofers, but even food delivery app Swiggy, quick delivery specialists Dunzo and Zepto have also pumped in big money into quick commerce. Google-backed Dunzo, which is an early mover into the quick delivery space offers limited product options to their customers. Zepto — <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/this-six-month-old-startup-is-nearing-google-backed-dunzos-valuation-by-delivering-groceries-in-10-mins/articleshow/87457816.cms">founded six months ago by two 19-year-old Stanford dropouts</a> — has also found its model to deliver products in 10 minutes on the back of limited products, which has helped it achieve a $250 million valuation. But Grofers wants to sell a much larger product line. Everything from ice cream to poncho for winters will be delivered by Blinkit, Dhindsa added. Globally quick commerce players have fewer stock keeping units (SKU), between <a href="https://coresight.com/research/from-quick-commerce-to-instant-needs-exploring-business-models-in-rapid-delivery/">1,000 and 3000 products</a>, Grofers is chasing 4000-7000 SKUs, which can put a strain on its operations. “Customers expect us to have more things, not less. And they want faster delivery, not slower. So we don't have a business model, we are just obsessed with the customers,” is Dhindsa's defence. So, he is not cutting back on the inventory. And he wants to serve 30 cities through 1000 stores by the middle of next year. It is currently executing its 10-minute delivery in 12 cities through over 250 stores and plans to take this number to 530 stores by next month. Is it really enough? In comparison, Dunzo has over 11,000 merchants listed on its platform across 8 cities. A chief executive of a firm in the quick commerce space, on the condition of anonymity, told Business Insider that 540 stories across 12 cities would not be enough to carry out 10-minute deliveries. Besides this, the larger SKUs of over 5000 is not feasible, the executive added. “We did some maths on our end to do 10-minute delivery in a city like Bangalore [Bengaluru], you will need close to 80-90 stores. If you have to deliver in Delhi [under 10 minutes], you would need around 300-400 stores. The company shut Ola Cars within one years of its launch, as it focuses on its electric two-wheeler and car verticals. "Ola has reassessed its priorities and decided to shut down Ola Dash - its quick commerce business. Ola will also be reorienting its Ola Cars business to focus more on strengthening the go-to-market strategy for <keyword id="4393078" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ola-electric" source="Orion">Ola Electric</keyword>," the company said in a statement. It added that Ola Cars' infra, technology and capabilities will be "repurposed towards growing Ola Electric's sales and service network". While recommending this issue for long-term investors only, Santosh Meena, head of research at Swastika Investmart said that, “Campus Activewear Limited is India's largest sports and athleisure footwear brand, it enjoys competitive advantages like integrated manufacturing facilities, strong brand recognition, robust distribution network. Campus Activewear IPO allotment to start tomorrow; grey market premium falls to ₹95

The Mukesh Ambani-led company will own 25.8% stake in the eight-year-old startup, on a fully diluted basis. The valuation of the startup at which the financing round was done was not revealed. Just a back of the envelope calculation shows that if Ambani’s 25% stake is worth $200 million, the value of the entire 100% would be over $775 million. This is more than double the valuation of $300 million that was accorded to the company last year. This will allow Asia’s richest man, Ambani, to open yet another front with Jeff Bezos’ Amazon, which currently has a similar service called Amazon Fresh. Our merchants will get access to the hyperlocal delivery network of Dunzo to support their growth as they move their business online through Jio Mart,” Isha Ambani, director of Reliance Retail, said. Founded by Dalvir Suri, Mukund Jha, Kabeer Biswas and Ankur Agarwal in 2015, Dunzo connects users with vendors like grocery stores, pharmacies, restaurants and more to facilitate delivery of products. It also allows its customers to facilitate peer-to-peer deliveries by hiring a partner to fulfill pick-and-drop orders. The company is currently operating in 7 metro cities and the additional capital will be used to expand its quick commerce business to 15 cities. Asia’s richest man Mukesh Ambani makes a new purchase to take on Amazon and Swiggy in quick commerce

India is one of the biggest emerging ecommerce markets globally, estimated to reach $130 billion by 2025. Almost ten years later, its success is being questioned by a wealth management firm, Bernstein, in its latest report. Amazon is now the second largest player behind Flipkart with a gross merchandise value of $18-20 billion and has over 170 million products. But it’s yet to turn profitable in a market where the average order value is below $10 (approx. ₹800). “Besides growth-related investments, profitability has also been impacted by a higher mix of low margin product categories (e.g., smartphones with sub 5% net margins). Amazon has struggled to scale volumes in higher margin categories such as fashion and beauty and personal care,” said the Bernstein report. Fashion has seen the highest growth in the last few years, and so has grocery. But the latter is led by quick commerce players like Dunzo, Zepto and <keyword id="12724311" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="blinkit" source="Orion">Blinkit</keyword>. Amazon and Flipkart are market leaders in mobiles and consumer electronics. But the share of this segment in the ecommerce market is declining. Indian regulations give <keyword id="10926" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="reliance" source="Orion">Reliance</keyword> an edge over Amazon In spite of having 700,000 sellers on its platform, Amazon is yet to gain ground in a very important category in India — tier 2 and tier 3 markets. As per the report, these markets account for around 50% of all e-commerce sales, and they’re growing. “Reliance leads in India with a strong 1P business with over 15,000 store retail footprints. Flipkart is the frontrunner in the apparel category and social ecommerce firm Meesho is winning in tier 2/3 cities where Amazon struggles to perform,” it said. 1P business is where retailers have an online presence like Reliance with a wide brick and mortar footprint. Amazon however is a 3P player who works with sellers. The regulations in India are skewed towards the former, and tougher for MNCs. “Regulations don't allow for an inventory-led 1P model for a foreign entity like Amazon. The company has made investments into local retailers like <keyword id="64373" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="shoppers-stop" source="Orion">Shoppers Stop</keyword> (fashion), More (grocery), and a rumoured stake in <keyword id="1560087" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ecom-express" source="Orion">Ecom Express</keyword> (logistics) but integration has been limited as the regulations don't allow for full control,” the report said. At the same time, its key competitor Reliance scaled up its ecommerce operations to around 19% of core retail sales, thanks to its 15,000 stores and ability to manage an inventory-led model. “Amazon's management attrition has also increased recently, potentially signaling difficulties achieving desired scale,” the report said. Amazon’s worldwide consumer CEO Dave Clark left the company after 23 years in 2022. Here’s where ecommerce growth is at The sweet spot for ecommerce growth in India is Tier 2+, the report says, which is a market that’s seeking products tailored to their needs. <keyword id="3030142" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="myglamm" source="Orion">MyGlamm</keyword>, <keyword id="1932100" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bewakoof" source="Orion">Bewakoof</keyword> and Sleepy Owl are able to achieve this with a large chunk of their business coming from these towns. However, due to regulations, Amazon cannot make headway here too. The inability to operate a 1P model has limited the availability of private labels versus the competition, which further pressures margins, the report says. “Despite the importance of the market, we estimate that it contributes less than 5% to Amazon's overall value. At Amazon's current valuation, we see the India business as a call option for Amazon investors, as long as the company is disciplined around capital allocation,” says Bernstein. The development comes only a few months after Grofers announced its entry into the 10-minute grocery delivery space. The company — which had earlier decided to move out of its 90-minute delivery option five years ago — now believes that “instant commerce is indistinguishable from magic”. This has to say a lot about how the Indian ecommerce space has developed in the last few years. Grofers made its first pivot in 2016, when it decided to move from a marketplace model to an inventory one as it was taking a toll on customer experience. This was also the time when the company decided to do away with its 90-minute delivery concept because it did not see any path of profitability in that business model. This was the company’s highest quarterly revenue in the last two years. The normalcy around this festive season was an added bonus, which further boosted customer’s confidence in shopping offline. This is exactly where DMart and its extensive network of 263 retail outlets end up benefit from, analysts and stock brokers believe. But the sales figure is not the only thing that is going to be great for this retail store chain in the December quarter, say analysts. The revenue figure was only a sneak peak into DMart’s third quarter financial statement that is bound to be released this Saturday, on January 8. And it is definitely something that investors should keep an eye out for. <div type="image" title="Diwali and Christmas may have saved DMart’s quarter" msid="88718641" hostid="261"></div> According to Neha Khanna, cofounder and director of financial services group Valpro, the company’s gross margin is likely to improve year-on-year due to relatively higher general merchandise sales and rising fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) product prices. DMart’s EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation) margins are going to be in the 8-8.5% range in the December quarter, she added. There is nothing about DMart’s Q3 results that retail investors need to be worried about, but the same is hard to say for the January to March quarter of 2022. The competition coming from digital only players like JioMart and BigBasket had been increasing rapidly since the last two years. But now Khanna believes that DMart and other groceries players — whether online or offline — are going to face tough challenges from players in the quick commerce domain. Whether it’s Swiggy’s InstaMart, Zomato-backed Blinkit (formerly Grofers) or soonicorns (startups that are close to a billion dollar valuation) Zepto and Dunzo, all are priming 10 minutes delivery. While there are debates whether customers need these services, the fact of the matter remains that investment in the ecommerce space is getting heavier. <ul><li><keyword id="2988161" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ashneer-grover" source="Orion">Ashneer Grover</keyword> has resigned from his position as the managing director of <keyword id="7349800" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharatpe" source="Orion">BharatPe</keyword>.</li><li>He was the CEO of the merchant payments platform until last year and was replaced by Suhail Sameer.</li><li>Grover accused BharatPe’s core team of leveraging on his personal network to scale up their payments business.</li></ul>Ashneer Grover, the cofounder and managing director of BharatPe, has resigned from his position at the merchant payments platform. The development comes a week after his wife, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/bharatpe-fires-ashneer-grovers-wife-madhuri-jain-and-she-takes-to-twitter-to-make-a-new-set-of-allegations-against-the-company/articleshow/89767491.cms">Madhuri Jain, was terminated</a> on allegations of misappropriation of funds. Grover, in the resignation letter dated March 1, accused the BharatPe’s core team of leveraging on his personal network to scale up their payments business and later treating him in a “the most disgraceful manner”. “Am I perfect? As every other human being does, I am sure I have my follies. I have been told that I am too straight forward [sic], headstrong, and have very demanding standards when it comes [to] work. But it is these qualities that have resulted in BharatPe’s exponential growth in becoming an industry behemoth,” the letter read. Here is the full text of Grover’s letter: Dear Board, I write this with a heavy heart as today I am being forced to bid adieu to a company of which I am a founder. I say with my head held high that today this company stands as a leader in the fintech world. Since the beginning of 2022, unfortunately, I’ve been embroiled in baseless and targeted attacks on me and my family by a few individuals who are ready not only to harm me and my reputation but also harm the reputation of the company, which ostensibly they are trying to protect. From being celebrated as the face of Indian entrepreneurship and an inspiration to the Indian youth to build their own businesses, I am nowwasting myself fighting a long, lonely battle against my own investors and management. Unfortunately, in this battle, the management has lost of what [sic] is actually at stake – BharatPe. People who know me and have worked closely with me know that I believe in building - whatever the odds may be. I am an IIT Delhi – IIM Ahmedabad graduate, the best of what Indian [sic] education system has to offer. I am the child of middle-class parents who’ve imbibed in me the values of hard work, integrity and honesty. I am a professional with an impeccable track record who has been instrumental in building two unicorn businesses, i.e. Grofers and BharatPe from scratch. I have not only encouraged the youth of this country to follow their dreams but have also created an arena of job opportunities for tens of thousands of India’s gig-economy workers. I am proud that my journey and growth has not only been limited to me but has also encompassed within its fold people associated with me, professionally and personally. In my endeavor to promote and grow the start-up ecosystem in our country, I have invested back what I have earned and have helped many along the way. I have nurtured BharatPe as my baby. I’ve built it along with my co-founder and an amazing team of individuals. Most times the circumstances were hostile (to say the least) but it did not stop me. BharatPe was the last entrant in UPI space and competed with goliaths like PayTM, PhonePe and GooglePay – but it still emerged as a leader in the industry. I had the vision to disrupt payments with ‘0% MDR’, lending with shopkeeper ‘loans against payments’, P2P with ‘12%Club’ and BNPL with ‘postpe’. With my efforts and hard work, the Company has created a network of more than 1 Crore (10M) shopkeepers who transact more than Rs 100,000 Crores (US$ 16B) annually and lent out more than Rs 4,000 crores (US$ 0.5B) as loans. It is indisputable that BharatPe loans have helped lakhs of small businesses fight organised e-commerce and COVID. Most importantly and the only time for any Fintech in India – with my constant efforts the Company has acquired a Small Finance Bank license to create ‘Unity Small Finance Bank’. I’ve shown the gumption and intent to find a solution for PMC Bank and Ten Lakh of its depositors to give them back their hard-earned funds. The height at which BharatPe stands today is the result of the hard work of the last four years. With a team of less than Five hundred on-roll employees, an aggregate spending of less than US$ 150 Mn, and by raising US$ 615 Mn from ten of the marquee investors without using a single banker, the success story of BharatPe is for everyone to see. While scripting the commercial success of BharatPe, the Company was also affording liquidity to our employees of more than Rs 100 crores against their ESOPs and giving at least Eighty times returns to each of its twenty-eight angel investors. While the Company was valued at Rs 20,000 crores (US$ 3B) as per the Series E round; today it would be valued at Rs 40,000 crores (US$ 6B), within a span of less than a year. No other startup of similar valuation has been able to achieve what BharatPe has achieved today that too by utilizing less than Rs 1,000 crores. Clearly, BharatPe’s success story is for the world to see. Am I perfect? As every other human being does, I am sure I have my follies. I have been told that I am too straight forward, headstrong, and have very demanding standards when it comes [to] work. But it is these qualities that have resulted in BharatPe’s exponential growth in becoming an industry behemoth. Unfortunately, what has happened in the recent past seems to be a battle of egos being played to the gallery of the media under the charade of “good governance”. The fundamental fact is that all of you as investors are so far removed from reality that you’ve forgotten what real businesses look like and have no appreciation for what it took to run this enterprise day in and day out. Your outlook towards BharatPe has been limited to the small window on your Zoom Meetings application, far removed from the sweat of the brow that goes into making BharatPe the business leader that it is. None of you, including the ones based in India, have ever been to our office even once, since the andemic turned our lives upside down and sought to suffocate the economy. Not even once. Not Micky. Not Harshjit. Not Mohit. Not Teru San. Not Rahul. Not Deven. No one. None of you even turned-up despite an invitation for the inauguration of our new office. This is how connected you are to BharatPe. Your views of businesses and problems on the ground are so colored by the windows of the Ivory Tower in which you all reside that you have no connect whatsoever with the human element of the business. It is sad that you have even lost touch with the Founder. You’ve lost touch with me. For you, the Founder of this company has been reduced to a button to be pressed when needed. I cease to be a human for you. Today,you have chosen to believe gossip and rumours about me instead of having a frank conversation. You are so easily spooked because you have no touch with reality. The fact of the matter is that today you believe that I have served my utility and so incrementally I am just becoming a liability. And since then, the fact of the matter is that today you believe that I have served my utility and so incrementally I am just becoming a liability. And since the investor template to make an unwanted Founder go away is to make them the villain of the piece, that’s what you have gone ahead and done – “Let’s invoke the SHA. Let’s put him on leave under the pretext of a governance review. Let’s terminate his wife’s employment. Let’s vilify his whole clan. We as investors are on top of the food chain – let’s cut him down to size and make an example of him.” When you wanted to leverage my personal network, you were very happy to do so – today I am being vilified and treated in the most disgraceful manner. You treat us Founders as slaves – pushing us to build multi-billion-dollar businesses and cutting us down at will. Investor-Founder relation in India is one of Master-Slave. I am the rebel slave who must be hung by the tree so none of the other slaves can dare to be like me ever again. Unfortunately, I refuse to walk that path and refuse to tolerate this continuous and shameful vilification of me and my family. I have been the one who founded this company and built it up to its enviable position today, no wonder you want to oust me for your vested interests. So when do we end this? We end this now. While I maintain that you will not find a single act of impropriety against me, I will not be participating in your charade. Since you clearly believe you can run this Company better without me – I am leaving you with this challenge. Build incrementally even half of the value I created so far – I am leaving you with three times the funds I’ve utilised till date. I hereby resign as the Managing Director of BharatPe, effective immediately. I also resign as a Director of the Board. I will continue as the single largest individual shareholder of the Company. I have founded and built BharatPe into what it is today, and this identity, none of you can take away from me.
