From January to August 2024, Indian startups secured $7.5 billion in <keyword id="19913965" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="venture-capital" source="keywords">venture capital</keyword> funding, a sharp rise from the $4.9 billion raised during the same timeframe in the previous year. The report highlighted that not only did the total funding amount grow, but the average deal size also increased. A total of 780 venture capital deals were completed between January and August 2024, compared to 742 deals in the same period in 2023. These deals contributed to the $7.5 billion raised this year, marking a 5.1% rise in deal volume alongside the impressive 53.1% growth in funding value. GlobalData's report emphasised India's growing prominence in the Asia-Pacific region as a major hub for venture capital investments, ranking second only to China. Globally, India secured a spot among the top five countries in terms of both the number of venture capital deals and the total funding value. "The marked increase in venture funding value highlights the burgeoning investor confidence in India's <keyword id="19930407" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="startup-ecosystem" source="keywords">startup ecosystem</keyword>,” explains Aurojyoti Bose, lead analyst at GlobalData. "India's performance signals a promising landscape in the <keyword id="20948843" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="VC-funding" source="keywords">VC funding</keyword> market". From a global perspective, India accounted for 7.3% of the total venture capital deals between January and August 2024, with a 4.6% share of the total funding value. Additionally, India saw a notable increase in high-value VC deals, with several investments exceeding $100 million. Some of the standout funding rounds this year included <keyword id="12437554" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="zepto" source="Orion">Zepto</keyword>, which raised $665 million and $340 million in two separate rounds, Meesho's $300 million round, <keyword id="20201450" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pharmeasy" source="keywords">PharmEasy</keyword> securing $216 million, OYO raising $173.5 million, and Radiance receiving $150 million. Indian startup finance ecosystem still going strong, report shows over 50% growth in VC funding over last year

Quick commerce company <keyword id="19939134" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Zepto" source="keywords">Zepto</keyword> on Friday said it has raised <keyword id="22130274" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="USD-665-million" source="keywords">USD 665 million</keyword> (about Rs 5,560 crore) in the latest funding round that valued the firm at USD 3.6 billion, almost triple than its worth a year back. The massive fundraise comes less than a year after the Mumbai-based startup raised USD 235 million at a valuation of USD 1.4 billion. The funding round saw participation from new investors like Avenir, Lightspeed, and Avra, alongside existing investors Glade Brook, Nexus, and StepStone, Goodwater, and Lachy Groom. "We've gone from 0 to 1 billion-plus in sales, or GMV, in 29 months, that is faster than any other internet company before us... Even on a base of over a billion dollars at this point, we are growing 100 per cent-plus year on year. And that for us is one of the big drivers of this fundraise," Zepto co-founder and CEO Aadit Palicha told PTI. Attributing the growth to the performance of the quick commerce firm, the young entrepreneur said, "This is largely because of the input excellence we've built across the supply chain. "Whether it is sourcing excellence, mother hub efficiency, line haul utilisation, or our last mile, the innovation that we've done, or forecasting, we're in this place where even as we've been able to grow, we've been able to drive efficiency to get the business to pretty much close to full operating cash flow positive today." He said the overall business is close to operating at break-even cash flow. Nearly 75 per cent of the company's stores are fully EBITDA positive as of May 2024, he said. "Over the next 12-18 months, although it might fluctuate, but we'll still be pretty close to operating cash flow positive, and the idea is to keep in that direction, get the business to a place where we can list next 9-12 months," he said. Zepto co-founder and CTO <keyword id="12442402" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kaivalya-Vohra" source="Orion">Kaivalya Vohra</keyword> said the firm plans to hire top talent across engineering, product, growth, finance, operations, and category management. Zepto has attracted further interest from investors, with discussions underway for an additional $250 million in funding. This new round, which could grow to as much as $400 million, is expected to push the company’s valuation to around $4.6 billion. <h2>When Palicha said Zepto will be bigger than D-Mart </h2> This isn’t the first time that Palicha has made a bold prediction about Zepto. Last month, Palicha had said that Zepto would be bigger than D-Mart in the near future. Speaking at the JIIF Foundation Day event in Delhi, Palicha had pointed out that despite D-Mart’s impressive $30 billion valuation, the retail behemoth is currently only 4.5 times larger than Zepto in terms of sales. If we maintain our current pace, growing 2-3 times each year, we could potentially surpass them in the next 18-24 months," Palicha had said.

Zepto secures USD 340 million in latest funding round, boosting valuation to USD 5 billion

Amid the ongoing startup gloom comes good news in fintech unicorn <keyword id="19944449" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="incred" source="keywords">Incred</keyword> which has posted Rs 109 crore in profit in FY23 as compared to Rs 31 crore in FY22, a more than 3.5 times growth. Incred's revenue surged 77.46 per cent to Rs 866 crore during FY23 from Rs 488 crore in FY22, according to its financials with the Registrar of Companies (RoC). The finance cost (interest expenses) was up 62.6 per cent to Rs 356 crore in FY23 from Rs 219 crore in FY22, as the company scaled its operations, according to an Entrackr report. Incred has likely built a loan book of Rs 7,500 crore within the last six years. Late last month, the fintech lender became India's second unicorn of 2023 (the other being quick commerce startup <keyword id="19939134" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="zepto" source="keywords">Zepto</keyword>) after raising $60 million from new and existing investors. <keyword id="20112130" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="incred-wealth" source="keywords">InCred Wealth</keyword>, the wealth management subsidiary of InCred, led the funding round with investing $36.76 million, followed by MEMG Family Office at $9 million. DMart, for instance, has set up its app and pick-up centers for home delivery after handling its bulk delivery orders during the pandemic. Online grocery market has two segments -- quick commerce and scheduled e-grocery. Only Jiomart, Bigbasket and DMart are scheduled e-grocery stores, all the other platforms are in a race of quick delivery business. And the segment seems to be ruled by the ‘10-30-minute delivery’ offered by platforms like <keyword id="6358977" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="swiggy" source="Orion">Swiggy</keyword>, Blinkit, Zepto and Dunzo. Most of the retail chains who intend to deliver groceries however have a one-day lag period between order and delivery. Added to that, quick commerce platforms are addressing multiple consumer pain-points such as convenience, speed, curated assortment, value, and round-the clock standardized services. Customers who order food online for convenience, wider selection, discounts and standardized customer support are also likely to be more amenable to ordering grocery items online for the very same reasons. This opens up cross-sell opportunities for food-techs like Swiggy and Blinkit, which is merging with Zomato. Paan to curds - quick commerce delivers it all A February 2022 Survey by LocalCircles indicates that 71% of the households used q-commerce platforms to either order daily use items such as milk, bread, eggs, curd, fruits and vegetables, etc. They also ordered indulgence items such as soft drinks, ice creams, chocolates and paan. Though, only 29% of the surveyed households used q-commerce for ‘all their grocery’ purchases. For the bulk purchases however, the large format stores are still in the running as people are going to the stores. DMart is still aggressively opening stores in parts of the country to get back to pre-covid levels. “We believe it will look to accelerate store expansion and the benefit of recent expansion is yet to fully kick in – revenue intensity is lower than pre-Covid levels,” said analysts at ICICI Securities post its March quarter earnings. Redseer estimates the grocery market size in India was worth $620 billion in 2021, which is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8% over the next four years to reach over $850 billion by 2025. Quick commerce is all set for the long haul Quick commerce players are also vying for a bigger piece of the entire pie. The quick ordering might start with fresher foods like fruits and vegetables, meat, dairy and other ready-to-cook items; and also indulgence categories like chocolates, biscuits, snacking items, cold drinks, and tobacco. But it could extend to others too. “We also expect grocery staples, cooking essentials, medicines, baby and personal care, home care and pet care, amongst others, to pick up as consumers become more habituated to ordering through the platforms,” said the JM Financial report. Recently, Swiggy raised $700 million for quick-commerce grocery service Instamart. Zomato poured $150 million into quick commerce startup Blinkit. Zepto raised $200 million and lastly Reliance Industries also caught the quick commerce train by investing $200 million in Dunzo. This also means that competitive intensity is likely to be severe in the near term, between them and also with the big retailers. “Only those platforms that have very strong customer recall, robust back-end supply chain and/or strong balance sheet are likely to survive this battle of attrition,” said the report. JM Financial believes that quick delivery platforms have what it takes to disrupt the unorganized grocery market including neighbourhood kirana stores or even retail chains like DMart in large cities. Thus, Indian companies are desperately on the lookout for gig workers to fulfill roles in business development, field sales, last-mile delivery, digital promotion, brand promotion, and micro-influencers, according to <keyword id="14204112" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="taskmo-gig" source="Orion">Taskmo Gig</keyword> Index report. In fact, a 50% growth in active gig workers on the platform in the past five months was seen. The number of active gig workers registered on the platform in May was 60,000, a 15.38% growth in the workforce joining the <keyword id="3080230" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gig-economy" source="Orion">gig economy</keyword> compared to the previous month, as per the data given in the report. A similar trend was also observed in the gig job opportunities as recruiters are strengthening their roots across tier-2 and 3 cities such as Pondicherry, Mirzapur, Patna, Jabalpur, and Kanpur, increasing the number of gig jobs overall. “Gig is the newest trend in the employment market and today we see its expansion across each and every industry in the country. Gig workers aged between 26 to 40 years hold 32% share in the gig economy, while gig workers in the age group of 41-60 years make up only 20% of the overall workforce. “Now we see every other company promoting gigification of traditional job roles. Furthermore, we have seen that emerging segments in gig are largely dominated by millennials and Gen Z today,” Janadri added. Women gig workers however make up only 28% of the gig workforce. “Gig continues to be a flexible model of work for India’s working women who are able to pick their jobs based on their area of interest, location, availability and experience. Women have been majorly employed in roles related to customer support, content monitoring and moderation, tele-sales, and audits and surveys,” says the report. Furthermore, the gig segment has seen a significant demand for workers across various sectors like quick commerce, healthtech, fintech and e-commerce. Cities like Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Chennai saw the maximum growth, according to the report.
