The line between a work device and a personal device is blurrier than ever. People are already accustomed to constantly checking their email on their smartphone or tablet, and want the same for other work-related tools. 
More people are working remotely, and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-future-of-the-workplace-slide-deck-2013-2">the office is shifting away</a> from a place where people go and sit in front of the same work PC every day. The <keyword id="697611" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="BYOD">BYOD</keyword> (bring your own device) trend is something businesses can't ignore. 
If accessing professional networks and information is difficult or clunky on mobile devices, it makes working on the go and keeping up to date inefficient and frustrating. 
That means companies have to balance the convenience of letting workers use their own device with the added security, but increased expense, of providing company-owned devices. But even companies that choose the latter will have to account for personal devices, as this chart <a href="https://intelligence.businessinsider.com/">from Business Insider Intelligence shows:</a>

That chart, and the many others like it, scare IT people. It's their job to protect the company's data and secure its internal network, which becomes dramatically more difficult when devices are physically remote or outside of the corporate network. 
Dealing with that disconnect has led to a burgeoning software industry in <keyword id="1122310" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="mobile-device-management">mobile device management</keyword> (MDM). A variety of companies have stepped up to allow companies to track, encrypt, update, remote wipe, and generally manage devices of all types through the cloud and through more traditional on-premise means. 
The sheer variety and volume of devices means outside help is usually needed. <a href="http://www.gartner.com/newsroom/id/2213115">Gartner predicts</a> that 65 percent of enterprises will adopt a new MDM system over the next five years. 
Business Insider Intelligence <a href="https://intelligence.businessinsider.com/zenprise-qa-2012-10">spoke to Ahmed Datoo</a>, CMO of <keyword id="1760269" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Zenprise">Zenprise</keyword> (recently bought by Citrix) which is one of the most popular MDM vendors, and he revealed a four-step progression that most businesses will take.
Unmanaged
This is where a surprising amount of businesses are right now. Almost a third of the Chief Information Officers <a href="http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9231488/Forecast_2013_Setting_a_mobile_risk_management_strategy">in a recent survey</a> said they don't have a formal mobile management strategy. That's an increasingly risky and inefficient state of affairs.
Managed
These are businesses that have done the minimum, letting employees know what devices and operating systems they can manage, and have software and security solutions for those devices.
Advanced
These companies either allow employees to formally integrate apps, content, and other tools into their workflow, or build them on their own. 
Optimized
Those organizations that make creating apps and mobile-first solutions a core part of their strategy.
The security, productivity, and efficiency cases for bringing mobile onboard are overwhelming. Soon, being able to accommodate employees' devices is going to be the baseline. Doing innovative things with them is going to be a competitive advantage.

We're Past The Point Where Companies Can Ignore Employees' Personal Devices

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>We keep hearing about the endless upheaval going on at Citrix, <a href="http://investors.citrix.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=893404">a $3.14 billion company</a> that sells software to enterprises to protect their mobile devices and deliver apps to remote computers.There's been an exodus in the executive and management ranks this year as part of a restructuring that took place in the first quarter. But, things are not calm yet. In the past couple of weeks two prominent execs have left.And late last week, activist investor Elliott Management announced a more than 7% stake and a bunch of ideas to drive the share price up. Elliott suggests that Citrix continue its restructuring, particularly its sales force and channel partners, and spin off or sell some products that are an odd fit.<h2>Two more executives gone</h2>Problems at Citrix have been going on for more than a year and were supposed to have culminated with the first-quarter restructuring, which included laying off <a href="http://files.shareholder.com/downloads/CITRIX/292757050x0x822944/EE8F2AD0-7F03-4658-AA3E-5E34B1B08462/CTXS_News_2015_4_22_General_Releases.pdf">900 people (700 employees, 200 contractors)</a> The company announced the layoff in January and word was the <a href="http://www.bizjournals.com/triangle/blog/techflash/2015/02/citrix-layoffs-raleigh-sharefile-jobs-hiring.html">pink slips went out in February</a>.In June these two execs left:<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>Catherine Courage, who was the senior vice president of Customer Experience (i.e. product design) and a member of Citrix's executive leadership team. She<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/catherinecourage"> left to work at DocuSign</a>. She had been at Citrix since 2009.Brian Dye,<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=630605"> the GM of Citrix Mobile Platforms </a> including its mobile management product XenMobile. He's now at at Intel, leaving Citrix before he had been there a year.In February, Sudhakar Ramakrishna, senior vice president of <keyword id="6356323" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Enterprise">Enterprise</keyword> Desktop and Mobile left Citrix as part of the restructuring, <a href="Sudhakar%20Ramakrishna,%20Senior%20Vice%20President%20and%20General%20Manager,%20Enterprise%20and%20Service%20Provider%20Division,">the company announced in an SEC filing.</a> His role was handed to <a href="http://blogs.citrix.com/2015/03/10/how-does-your-technology-define-you/">chief strategy officer, Geir Ramleth</a>.With the exit of Courage and Ramakrishna , the executive suite at the company is decidedly male and decidedly white, noted <a href="https://twitter.com/appdetective/status/596445373662650369">one company observer on Twitter</a>.Other manager who are recently gone from Citrix include:Al Monserrat, senior vice president of worldwide sales and services since 2008 left in January. He landed as CEO of <a href="http://www3.ressoftware.com/CEO-Open-Letter.html">RES Software in April</a>.Rakesh Narasimhan, general manager of Citrix Desktop Products, who left in February.Sunil Potti, head of products for Citrix Netscaler, who left to do that job at rising star startup Nutanix.And this is on top of managers who left in 2014, some headed to competitor VMware.Meanwhile, Citrix's XenMobile product experienced other leadership changes, too. In 2013, Citrix bought Zenprise for <a href="http://fortune.com/2012/12/06/exclusive-citrix-paying-355-million-for-zenprise/">a reported $355 million. </a> Amit Pandey, the CEO of Zenprise, who joined Citrix to run the unit <a href="http://www.computing.co.uk/ctg/news/2334299/citrix-loses-two-key-zenprise-mdm-execs-a-year-after-acquisition">left in March, 2014, </a>just over a year after the deal closed. And Ahmed Datoo, VP of marketing for Zenprise/XenMobile <a href="http://www.computing.co.uk/ctg/news/2334299/citrix-loses-two-key-zenprise-mdm-execs-a-year-after-acquisition">reportedly quit</a> at about the same time. He wrote in a research note on Monday:"The business has been in a constant state of upheaval, including after the most recent restructuring in 1Q15, which has resulted in poor execution and the departure of high profile executives. ... We believe it is an open question as to whether yet another restructuring would not impact execution and morale further creating risk to the 4-5.5% revenue target and the associated margin/EPS goals."In other research notes, Credit Suisse said <a href="http://finance.yahoo.com/news/citrix-wait-more-says-wall-154440440.html">that management may be "compelled"</a> to make more changes thanks to Elliott's involvement. Piper Jaffray thinks that Citrix might now consider breaking itself into pieces, selling itself, or going private.Citrix <a href="http://finance.yahoo.com/news/citrix-comments-letter-elliott-management-195500114.html">issued a statement about Elliott's proposals:</a> "We will review Elliott's suggestions and respond as we do with all shareholders who engage with us," and added that the "Citrix Board and management team continually evaluate ideas to drive shareholder value."When asked about the executive upheaval extending into June, a Citrix spokesperson told us:It is business as usual at Citrix and there will be no disruption to customers or product innovation. Citrix remains in 'a constant state of upheaval' and executives keep leaving

That's not a bad gig, as evidenced by its $12 billion market cap.
Now Citrix is pitching new software to enterprises that use <keyword id="6354485" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="mobile">mobile</keyword> devices. Which is basically every enterprise out there. 
Citrix's XenMobile Enterprise, unveiled Wednesday at the opening of its Synergy conference in Los Angeles, works with its virtual desktop software to connect mobile devices with back-end corporate apps and data securely. 
This means enterprises can let employees use iPhones, Android devices and Windows Phones without putting their valuable corporate data at risk. 
"You can use these devices to drive your business mobile,” Citrix CEO Mark Templeton said in a keynote at the event. 
There are tons of other apps that do the same thing—there's a whole market segment called mobile device management. But Citrix is going further by also managing corporate apps and data.
XenMobile includes three apps that Citrix built itself: There's a secure email app, and a mobile web browser that can access company's intranet and other back-end data.
Sharefile, an app for sharing and syncing documents across mobile devices, is also part of the package. The idea behind this app is to keep employees from putting corporate data in cloud storage services like Dropbox.
This is called "shadow IT", and it's another big issue enterprises are facing. 
Citrix is also launching its own app store for third party vendors and developers. The company says it'll have around 80 apps when it goes live in late June. 
Mobile is a big dilemma for enterprises. It makes employees more efficient, and even happier in some cases. But there are security risks. Bad things can happen to a company when an employee leaves their smartphone in a bar or taxi. 
Consumer mobile apps are designed to “talk” to each other and share data. But enterprises want to lock this down. Their nightmare scenario is a customer list from Salesforce.com being pasted into Facebook or another public site.
Citrix says XenMobile can solve this issue. “You want to separate life and work and manage the interaction between apps,” Templeton said. “You don’t want corporate information going out, but you might want personal information coming in.”
The mobile device management tech in XenMobile comes from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/citrix-zenprise-acquisition-2012-12">Citrix's acquisition of Zenprise</a>, a fast growing startup it bought last December. 
Citrix says it will ship XenMobile Enterprise late next month. It's priced starting at $65 per user monthly.

Citrix Wants Enterprises To Stop Using Dropbox, And It's Building Them Their Own App Store

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image">Jacob Kepler/BloombergSanjay Poonen, Executive Vice President and General Manager, VMware's End-User Computing</div></div></div>In January, just six months after joining VMware, Sanjay Poonen led VMware's biggest-ever acquisition, the <a href="http://www.vmware.com/company/news/releases/vmw-newsfeed/VMware-to-Acquire-AirWatch/1801180" target="_blank">$1.5 billion purchase of mobile security company AirWatch</a>.
It was a major deal, not just for its size but because it meant that VMware was getting serious about a market it had been kicking at for years: mobile security.
In its 15 years, VMware rose from a startup to a $5 billion company with a $41 billion market cap, mostly on the strength of its data center software.
That software lets one computer server be divided up into many "virtual" computers, allowing one machine to do the same amount of work that previously need 10 to 20 machines to do. They call it "server virtualization" and it forever changed the way companies buy and use hardware.
VMware owns this market with 500,000 customers, including 100% of the Fortune 100.
But VMware hasn't had much impact outside the data center, even though for years it had been trying to become a bigger player in the desktop software and mobile markets, an area dominated by Citrix.
Until recently.
In August, VMware <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sanjay-poonen-takes-on-vmware-tough-job-2013-8">poached Poonen</a>, the face of SAP's mobile division, one of SAP's big growth areas, too. He was leading <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sap-mobile-strategy-sanjay-poonen-2012-11">SAP's ambitious goal to </a>reach 1 billion mobile users by 2015. VMware hired him to be the new leader of its End-User Computing unit.
But leading VMware's mobile efforts was a tough job. The unit was a mix of homegrown software and acquisitions. Several executives that ran it before wound up leaving the company, and, in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sanjay-poonen-takes-on-vmware-tough-job-2013-8">at least one case, leaving in mere months</a>.
VMware wants to do for your iPad and smartphone what it did for your company's servers. It wants to turn any device into a PC of sorts, running the operating systems and apps in a window with nothing actually stored on the device. It's a concept known as desktop virtualization or, more recently called "Desktop-as-a-service" (DaaS).
Poonen rolled up his sleeves and has given VMware some serious game.
As we mentioned, in January, he bought AirWatch for $1.5 billion. He also led the <a href="http://www.vmware.com/company/news/releases/vmw-euc-daas-10-15-13" target="_blank">acquisition of DaaS company, Desktone</a> just two months after he landed at the company, for an undisclosed amount. (It had raised $26 million, though hadn't done a round since 2007.)
He signed a deal with VMware's biggest "frenemy," Cisco, to help <a href="https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v1/url?u=http://newsroom.cisco.com/release/1300895&amp;k=oIvRg1%2BdGAgOoM1BIlLLqw%3D%3D%0A&amp;r=A2EVZllgOylxl41M%2BeYCYaUMG0JRzscBWqyFscEFUHA%3D%0A&amp;m=5ire0jby0vVmV5DSX9OJotqm%2BJvBkA%2BBdvq0QsfIKXU%3D%0A&amp;s=1243bd6263355209680a8db392b8fc85ee03309a47c1684a3067989bbfc2cb54" target="_blank">power Cisco's DaaS offering</a> in December.
He inked a new <a href="http://www.vmware.com/company/news/releases/vmw-newsfeed/VMware-and-Google-to-Modernize-Corporate-Desktops-for-the-Mobile-Cloud-Era/1808362" target="_blank">partnership deal with Google to deliver virtual desktops on Chromebooks</a> in February.
He helped launch <a href="http://www.vmware.com/company/news/releases/vmw-newsfeed/VMware-Launches-VMware-Horizon%28TM%29-DaaS%28R%29-to-Enable-Simple-and-Flexible-Delivery-of-Desktops-in-the-Cloud/1817018">VMware's own DaaS service in March</a>, beating Amazon to the punch. Amazon had announced its plans for a similar service four months earlier but didn't launch it until two weeks after VMware.
That delay doesn't matter much in terms of sales, but it's something of a point of pride, as Amazon has a reputation for being first when it comes to all things cloud computing.
His team also launched a new version of their flagship mobile software product, <a href="http://www.vmware.com/company/news/releases/vmw-newsfeed/VMware-Unleashes-Horizon%28TM%29-6----Delivering-Published-Applications-and-Virtual-Desktops-on-a-Single-Integrated-Platform/1827941" target="_blank">VMware </a><a href="http://www.vmware.com/company/news/releases/vmw-newsfeed/VMware-Unleashes-Horizon%28TM%29-6----Delivering-Published-Applications-and-Virtual-Desktops-on-a-Single-Integrated-Platform/1827941" target="_blank">Horizon 6.</a>
We recently caught up with Poonen and asked him about his whirlwind few months.
Business Insider: What did it feel like to do VMware's biggest ever acquisition? I heard a story that your IT department was looking for a mobile security product for VMware employees, chose AirWatch, and VMware decided to buy it. That true?
Sanjay Poonen: I was aware of AirWatch as an <keyword id="6356323" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Enterprise">Enterprise</keyword> Mobility solution given my role at SAP. One thing I learned from several of the acquisitions I was involved with at SAP, is to make acquisition decisions in a very customer-focused way. 
So, we [asked our] IT team to evaluate possible choices. Our IT team identified AirWatch as the best product for our [own, internal] use.
We also talked to VMware customers and found that most of them were picking AirWatch. AirWatch was gaining momentum. Their 12,000 customers being 2-3x the size of their nearest competitors. 
In addition, we liked AirWatch's R&amp;D. AirWatch's investment in R&amp;D is bigger than the size of some of their competitors' entire company employee base.
Finally, as ironic as it might seem, we actually liked the fact that AirWatch was headquartered in Atlanta, away from the Silicon Valley. Alan Dabbiere (AirWatch Chairman), John Marshall (AirWatch CEO) and their team have built one of the most innovative technology darlings of the Atlanta area.

BI: What can you tell me about the Cisco DaaS deal? <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/chambers-cisco-is-going-to-crush-vmware-2014-5">Cisco and VMware's relationship has been strained lately</a>, ever since VMware acquired networking startup Nicira. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ciscos-parallels-vmware-2013-1">Cisco even invested in another virtualization company, Parallels</a>, and looked like it was trying to become less reliant on VMware. How did you convince them otherwise?
SP: We live in a world of co-opetition. Even if some parts of the Cisco portfolio overlap with parts of the VMware portfolio, Cisco is a key partner for the End-User Computing business.
The reason is this: we have been gaining significant momentum with our desktop business against Citrix the past 6-9 months, and Cisco's UCS [server product] is often the server [used with our Desktop solutions. 
Here's another example of our work with Cisco: AirWatch partners with the Cisco Security business. So, I make it a point to ensure that we work very closely with Cisco in any and every way we can.
BI: What's next for VMware? More acquisitions? More partnerships? Or are you mainly focused on growing what you currently have in place?
SP: Our first priority is PEOPLE. We attracted some of the top leadership talent out of Citrix, and I also promoted some key leaders from within VMware.
For the business, our vision is to deliver the most delicious end-user solutions. If you start your day on a desktop, move to a laptop, pick-up your tablet, phone or get into your Tesla - your apps, your content is all served up to you on any device - anywhere, anyplace, anytime.
Also, we primarily look to innovate [in house]. But when we do acquire, we are always looking to innovate the future, not consolidate the past.
