Estimates from Phando Corp suggest that monthly active users (MAUs) for India’s OTT video sector have grown at a blistering rate of 300% since 2019 to reach 680 million in 2021, with rural and tier 2 &amp; 3 cities consumption reaching an 80% share. West Versus India Several factors including the widespread availability of broadband infrastructure, the ubiquity of mobile phones and other connected portable devices, and quest for personalised experiences have spurred the adoption of OTT consumption in the Western world. At the same time, technology investments, the emergence of new apps, features, and independent platforms for OTT content have also been growth drivers. Tech companies such as Amazon, Facebook, Apple, YouTube, connected device providers such as Samsung, Xiaomi, LG, and studios such Disney, MGM, Paramount, Sony are among the major corporations who have entered the OTT space, giving a plethora of programming choices to the consumers in the West. The growth in OTT platforms combined with the subsequent content boom has seen vernacular content from different regions gaining international popularity. South Korean dystopian drama broke all records by becoming the most watched content on Netflix by netizens around the world. Similarly, Indian dramas such as Sacred Games and Delhi Crime were viewed and enjoyed by a global audience. As a result, all eyes are now firmly set on opportunities in emerging economies, specifically in the Indian subcontinent, with major players from the west entering the foray with attractive subscription offers, and diverse content catalogues. Some have chosen to collaborate with or acquire local brands to establish a firmer foothold in the region. For example, with the launch of Disney Plus in the US back in 2019, the streaming service promptly expanded to many other countries, including India. However, instead of getting a dedicated app for Indian users, the company acquired the Hotstar streaming platform and soon rebranded to Disney+ Hotstar. The coming together of Disney and Star TV Network (20th Century Fox) attracted tens of millions of subscribers in India and provided them access to a premium catalogue of content from Disney and Star TV. One of the challenges in India is the ability to monetize online content. Research suggests that the Advertising-led Video on Demand (AVOD) model is far more popular than Subscription-led video on demand (SVOD) models given the reluctance of viewers in India to pay for online content. While about 60% of total video viewing in India happens on YouTube, Netflix has 40 Mn monthly active users. Disney Plus Hotstar too has reached the critical mass with its freemium model, well-supported by relevant collaborations, such as sports (read cricket), which drives volume. Also, a KPMG study reveals that, unlike the West, only 10% of viewers access OTT platforms for watching original content. Rather, OTT is used primarily for the convenience of anytime and personal viewing of movies, music, sports or to catch-up with TV content. Driving OTT Growth in India As a country with a population of 1.23 billion, India is the next big market for OTT platforms. Some of the growth drivers for OTT players in India, based on the precedent from the West include: ● Investments in Content Video streaming services are expected to spend around ₹1,920 crore to create original content for India in 2021, driven in part by the sharp rise in audiences during the 2020 lockdown. The platforms will further increase spends, including on sports, to ₹30,000 crore, during 2021-25, according to the latest FICCI-EY media and entertainment industry report. Around 500 original titles are likely to be released in 2021 across platforms, as opposed to 385 titles in 2019 and 220 in 2020. The investment in original content makes sense given that viewers are learning to pay for the content they consume, especially original content. In 2020, 29 million subscribers paid for 53 million OTT video subscriptions (not counting subscriptions bundled along with data plans), a figure that is estimated to increase to 39 million subscribers for 71 million subscriptions in 2021. Netflix has more than 40 originals scheduled for 2021 and is expanding its slate by nearly three times compared to 2020. Amazon Prime Video has 50 local originals in various stages of development and 30 in various stages of production. Demand for original content will likely double by 2023 compared to 2019 levels. ● Content – the New Battlefield for Viewers Increasing number of consumers from tier-2 and tier-3 cities have spurred the production of regional content. Alt Balaji has seen a change after the pandemic. Before the pandemic, the top 8 cities in India contributed to 70% of their total audience; post-April 2020, 60% of the traffic is from other tier-2 and tier-3 cities. Old favourite shows are being re-aired on OTT platforms, while investments in new content production continue. Recently Amazon announced the acquisition of MGM, for $8.45 billion, giving it access to MGM’s library of 4000 film titles and 17,000 TV shows. We have witnessed the emergence of a wide variety of content including Indian content since India has a diverse market with over a dozen languages that are widely spoken across the country. OTT players are shifting their focus towards localisation of their platforms, to be able to connect with the Indian users, be it in terms of regional languages, geography and user experience etc. India already has about 40 OTT players and 10 music streaming apps in existence catering to various entertainment and media demands. This has opened the doors for OTT platforms to promote regional and hyperlocal content. In fact, a leading OTT player recently released 11 shows during the lockdown- all locally curated shows. The share of regional language consumption on OTT platforms is expected to cross 50% of total time spent by 2025, easing past Hindi at 45%. ● Government Regulations The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has, in the past year, stressed the need for some form of regulation of OTT Platforms to streamline the sector. In this regard, the MIB recently notified the Information Technology (Guidelines for Intermediaries and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules 2021. The new rules require OTT platforms to set up a robust three-tier grievance redressal mechanism. The first level will comprise regulation by the OTT Platform itself through a grievance officer. The second level will be an institutional self-regulatory body formed by publishers of content and their associations. This self-regulatory body will comprise industry experts headed by a retired Supreme Court/ High Court judge /eminent personality in the relevant field. At the third level is an inter-department committee constituted by the MIB that will provide oversight and hear appeals for decisions taken at level two or if a complaint is referred to the inter-department committee by MIB. Regulation might help improve the quality of content in the future. ● The Future of OTT - New Applications and Content Innovations There is no doubt that the future of <keyword id="6357922" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="television" source="Orion">television</keyword> is OTT, and the industry is at a nascent stage. Content is the force that defines the direction of evolution in the industry. New applications such as learning, education and fitness are being explored. Pricewaterhouse Coopers reported that in 2018, more than 40% of new internet users in the world were children. Edtech platforms like Byjus and Unacademy use the OTT streaming approach for education. Similarly, possible applications for learning management in corporations are being explored. While fitness was never considered an activity that could be done remotely, the pandemic saw this notion change. Apple TV Plus will be cheaper than Amazon Prime, Hotstar, and Netflix in India

<ul><li>The Delhi High Court on Wednesday observed that <keyword id="6411073" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="final-year-students">final year students</keyword> of the Delhi University "are not thoroughly prepared" to participate in the online open book examination (OBE) proposed by the varsity.</li><li>The data revealed that as against 1,83,376 students who had registered to participate in the OBE in the first phase, 1,86,814 students had registered themselves in the second phase.</li></ul> The Delhi High Court on Wednesday observed that final year students of the Delhi University "are not thoroughly prepared" to participate in the online open book examination (OBE) proposed by the varsity. "This is a clear indication that the final year students are not thoroughly prepared to participate in the online OBE that <keyword id="6562291" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-University-of-Delhi">the University of Delhi</keyword> has proposed to conduct," a division bench of Justices <keyword id="602661" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hima-Kohli">Hima Kohli</keyword> and Subramonium Prasad observed after comparing the data relating to the first and second phase of mock tests that were conducted by the varsity. The data revealed that as against 1,83,376 students who had registered to participate in the OBE in the first phase, 1,86,814 students had registered themselves in the second phase. However, the total number of the students who had logged in during the first phase were 93,185 whereas only 75,593 had logged in the second phase. The total number of papers attempted by the students in the first phase were 60,181 whereas, in the second phase, the total number of papers attempted were 51,176. The data also revealed that the total number of papers submitted in the first phase were 33,162 whereas, in the second phase, the total number of papers submitted were 23,693. After seeing the data, the bench said: "Even for the PWD (person with disability) category students and VH (visually handicapped) students, the data of the second phase of the mock test is no better than that of the first phase, if not worse." The observations were made while the bench was hearing a plea filed by Prateek Sharma, a physically disabled student, highlighting the difficulties that will be faced by disabled students in taking the online exam. The court also granted 10 days time to the varsity to file an affidavit clarifying its position along with the exact date by which the results of the final year students who propose to sit in the online open book examination will be declared. "It shall also be stated as to how many students had actually logged in to participate in the online OBE and the assessment of the number of students who will take the examination physically at a later date, to be indicated by the University," the bench said while slating the matter for further hearing on August 17. Meanwhile, a separate bench of Justice Prathiba M. Singh reserved orders on a batch of pleas challenging the DU's decision to conduct online OBE for final year students. During the hearing, the DU submitted that the OBE were the best option to check the student's knowledge in keeping with the UGC's guidelines while adhering to the restrictions thrown by the global pandemic. "The idea behind OBE was to prevent students from assembling in one hall as it would be difficult to maintain social distancing during the pandemic situation. There were detailed deliberations," senior advocate <keyword id="2985428" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sachin-Dutta">Sachin Dutta</keyword>, representing the DU, said. He further told the court that a student does not need very high technology to sit for online OBE as having an email will be sufficient and that connectivity issues will be far more in other modes. While the hearing was underway, with a lot of students too present, music suddenly started playing in the background, following which Justice Singh said: "I don't know what they are celebrating." Initially, the varsity had announced that the online OBE would commence from July 1, which was later postponed by the varsity to July 10 and again, the institution has now postponed the same till August 15, without giving a specific date as to when it would take place. Delhi University students 'not thoroughly prepared' for open book exams: HC

However, 2020 became a year when more and more people came onto the digital ecosystem, thanks to being stuck at home during the lockdown. With people barely moving out of their houses, they turned to the digital world for their daily fix of entertainment. Also, people were more open with experimenting with different platforms. If an IBEF report is to be believed, the OTT sector in India saw a 30% rise in the number of paid subscribers, from 22.2 million to 29.0 million between March and July 2020. There was a visible increase in the time people were spending on most platforms. It therefore became important for platforms to come up with differentiated, fresh content that would help them stand apart. Owing to the fact that multiplexes were shut for months, many platforms also started launching movies directly on digital. Consumers have been happy for the most part. As we enter 2021, expectations from the sector are high. With the coronavirus still around, many people will continue staying in. So what will this mean for the OTT sector in 2021? Will more and more people continue coming onto platforms, and prefer to pay for the content that they like? How will OTT platforms be able to ensure consumer stickiness? What are a few trends that will stand out in 2021? We reached out to a few experts from the industry and here’s what they had to say. However, around 65% of subscribers are still from Top 10 metros. 2021 will buck this trend and see the Premium OTT Category in India expand its footprint outside of the top 10 metros, heralding the next phase of growth for the category. The report from FICCI and E&amp;Y predicted 30-35 million paying subscribers on OTT platforms alone in the year 2021, and we are excited about carving a substantial pie out of the same. OTT: The trends to watch out for in 2021

<ul><li>Apple’s new video streaming service, Apple TV Plus, launched today at a subscription ₹99 per month.</li><li>Apple TV Plus monthly subscription in India is 72% cheaper than the US subscription that costs $4.99.</li><li>While Apple TV’s subscription is cheaper than Amazon Prime, <keyword id="2739840" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hotstar">Hotstar</keyword> and Netflix — its library is currently limited to eight shows.</li></ul>Apple TV Plus launched in 100 countries today, including India. But unlike other countries, the subscription for Apple’s new OTT service is only ₹99 per month. The company has had a tough time breaking through to the Indian market when it comes to iPhones because the exuberant prices. But with Apple TV Plus, the company has a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/netflix-disney-and-roku-tumble-after-apple-announces-its-streaming-service-will-be-cheaper-than-rivals/articleshow/71072368.cms">new found sensitivity for prices</a> in India. At ₹99 ($1.38), Apple TV Plus’ monthly subscription is 72% cheaper in India as compared to in the US where its launching at $4.99 (₹358). The aggressive pricing is also mindful of Disney Plus’ upcoming launch that’s slated to go live on November 12 at $6.99 per month. In India, Disney’s shows will be available to users through Hotstar since it’s a subsidiary of Star India, which, in turn, is owned by Disney. Apple TV Plus is cheaper but limited At ₹99, Apple TV’s subscription undercuts most of its competition — Amazon Prime, Hotstar, and Netflix — in the country. But it’s not without its drawbacks. Amazon Prime, the cheapest of the lot, costs ₹129 per month and can also boast of localised and original content like Made in Heaven, Mirzapur and Breathe. There is no reference to memes or any sort of internet culture.It completely avoids much of what makes a largely US-influenced internet tick, catering entirely to mainstream Indian interests. Some of the music videos tie into movies produced by T-Series, and cost up to $350,000 to make.This video ties into an upcoming T-Series movie, "Saaho." Aesthetically, it's James Bond meets Disney:It is this which baffled PewDiePie's fans, who revelled in his deeply self-referential, niche, and very internetty humour. His videos are so laced with cross-references that offensive jokes and languages are difficult to distinguish from obscure callbacks and references to memes.Take PewDiePie's "diss tracks" about T-Series, released in the heat of the battle for subscribers and intended to play up the competition. One lyric, from the track "Bitch Lasagna," reads: "Bobs or vegana, whichever will it be?".The line looks meaningless on its own, but is an apparent reference to Indian men misspelling "boobs" and "vagina" online, which originally went viral on Reddit.In typical PewDiePie fashion, the lyric treads the line between amusing insider reference and plain offensive.Kalyan says the two channels have totally different audiences."We were never in that race," he says. "But he's great. We wish him all the best - the kinds of things he does, we're not into that. It's a different audience altogether, there's no competition at all."Relations aren't quite so friendly under the surface.In April, T-Series won an injunction from the High Court in Delhi against PewDiePie to stop him uploading his diss tracks about T-Series to YouTube. The settlement has not been previously reported.<h2>T-Series started out recording devotional music to cassette tapes</h2><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>T-Series was founded in the 1980s by Gulshan Kumar, the son of a fruit juice vendor. The firm originally sold cassettes featuring devotional music and eventually became a record label giant with more than 3,500 employees.According to a BBC profile, Kumar spotted an opportunity for selling religious music as ageing Hindu devotees couldn't read hymns and chants from books thanks to poor eyesight. He hired singers to record the chants, and then sold the tapes at a cheap price."The transition from cassette manufacturing to India''s largest music label and very successful studio, with global presence, has really not been a very easy task," says Kalyan of the firm's evolution. "It has been a long journey for us. And over the past 15 years, the content industry has seen a kind of tectonic shift primarily due to the advent in technology."Kumar was <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2001/feb/11/filmnews.bollywood">assassinated in 1997 by a hit squad,</a> and his son Bhavesh took over the running of the business.Read more: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiktok-stars-magic-singh-pavan-henna-profile-2019-4?r=US&amp;IR=T">These new TikTok influencers have millions of fans and are hustling for a fraction of the price of YouTubers</a>Through the 2000s, T-Series wrestled with the same issues as other major record labels - namely piracy. It found one reliable source of money in licensing its songs for ringtones in 2004. "Indians loved any sort of spiritual tones or devotional tones," says Kalyan. "I've seen people who won't change their phone wallpaper because it's been lucky for them."Then came the firm's first encounter with YouTube - in Delhi's High Court."We were in litigation with YouTube, we had sued them for infringement of copyright," Kalyan says. "That was still at the time of cassettes. They claimed they were a neutral platform, so we went to court. We were the first company able to obtain an injunction from the [Indian] high court against YouTube."This was 2007, and YouTube faced multiple lawsuits from rights holders around the world who saw their original content, usually licensed at lucrative rates, ripped and uploaded for free to the video site.After years of litigation, T-Series' parent firm saw "good sense" and <a href="https://www.medianama.com/2011/02/223-youtube-music-label-t-series-reach-out-of-court-settlement/">came to a licensing agreement</a> with YouTube in late 2010. Prior to the suit, the firm had no presence on YouTube.The pair agreed to a three-year revenue-share deal, splitting the money that came in through the ads on T-Series' videos. Google paid an advance upfront, which it planned to make back through its share of the revenue."The most interesting part was we recouped that advance in just 9 months," Kalyan says. "That was the kind of growth we experienced. It became a cash cow."<h2>T-Series has benefited from a huge chunk of India coming online in the last three years</h2>The turning point for T-Series and the wider smartphone industry was 2016, when a new Indian telecoms brand called Jio launched. Owned by a major incumbent, Reliance, Jio offered cheap data and smartphones that brought some of India's 1.3 billion-strong population online for the first time.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>"99% of India's [mobile] population has Android smartphones," says Neil Shah, an analyst at Counterpoint Research. "So YouTube is a default app. Most users have warmed up to YouTube to consume content - not just video, but music. So they're going to YouTube rather than Spotify."According to <a href="https://imrbint.com/images/common/ICUBE%E2%84%A2_2019_Highlights.pdf">Kantar statistics from December 2018</a>, half a billion people in India are now online, driven primarily by rural growth. That is still less than half the country's total population.Kalyan notes the impact. "In 2016, there was mobile internet available in tier one or tier two cities, but now it's in tier three to tier five cities and villages, which had never experienced internet," he says. "So now the consumer is excited, and he's experimenting with everything, and it's resulted in an increase in consumption."Here's how T-Series has steadily grown its subscribers after 2016, per data supplied to Business Insider by Tubular Labs:<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>Most Western YouTubers <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-worlds-biggest-youtube-stars-are-seeing-a-massive-slowdown-2017-12?r=US&amp;IR=T">are struggling to maintain growth</a>, by contrast.Now YouTube is T-Series' third-biggest revenue stream, after licenses to video platforms and TV channels. The music label makes money solely through ads, though Kalyan won't disclose how much.The label has seven people who look after its various YouTube channels - 28 in total, covering different regional languages and interests - and another two or three who post the videos to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.<h2>The future is TikTok and original content</h2>After the success of YouTube and the explosion of mobile in India, T-Series is exploring other emerging platforms, Kalyan says.&#xa0;The company has forged deals with short-form viral video app TikTok, licensing its music for people to use in videos. India is one of TikTok's biggest markets, with <a href="https://tech.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/internet/tiktok-wants-more-diverse-creators-on-path-to-monetisation/69715867">a reported 120 million monthly active users</a> in the country. Kalyan says T-Series proactively works with TikTok influencers to help its songs go viral on the platform."We work with their teams, advise them on what's new, and what content we have," he says. "Our artists who are very established work with unknown influencers but have some following, they make a clip of 20 seconds integrating our music into whatever they're doing. Be it action, some dance. After that, it goes viral. And along with that virality, our music which has been synced with that clip also goes viral."T-Series has also <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/tiktok-owner-to-start-music-service-secures-rights-from-t-series-times-music/articleshow/69421732.cms">reportedly signed on for TikTok's rumoured streaming service</a>. But Kalyan ruled out T-Series launching its own dedicated content streaming service, such as Disney+."We would like to remain focused only on the content," he says. "That is our strength. The next step for us is films, which we've been able to master over the last three years. Before we used to moonlight with one or two films, but now we have 20 big-scale Bollywood films every year. We don't want to be in the space of launching our own platform, we don't want to compete with our own licenses."It's likely that the T-Series vs. PewDiePie battle is simply the first of many consequences of a 1.3 billion population coming online. A look at the top YouTube channels by subscribers shows at least seven Indian channels in the top 100, including SET India and Zee Music. That might mean further culture clashes as a hugely diverse base of Indian users begin using US platforms more frequently.It's perhaps the first time a new online population threatens the Americanized focus of the internet. The only other internet population big enough to potentially shape global internet culture in this way is China, but that's been walled off in its own online ecosystem for years. The next year, the brand wanted to take a stand against cyber-bullying which led to the #Heartthehate campaign, where the brand tried to throw light on the growing issue of trolling on social media. “Our research showed us how trolling is a tension point for consumers. We also came across this concept called the bystander effect where people don’t do much to stop a troll. The have-nots have also become nameless, they are a bunch of people who are keeping our houses and lives in action, the drivers, maids, the peons, the working class, everybody identified by their professions but don’t have a name and remain unacknowledged. However, that was when Covid-19 struck the world and the brand had to take a pause. “But as a few weeks and months passed, all of us went through certain realizations, firstly that we should be thankful that we are safe and secondly, there are a lot of people out there who are risking their lives to take care of others. And with Prime Minister Narendra Modi also acknowledging their efforts, there was a feeling of camaraderie and gratitude across the nation. And to take the campaign further, the company had committed a part of the proceeds from the sale of these bars towards health insurance policies of the daily wage earners through a partnership with Nirmana, an NGO that works with the unorganized sector. It also partnered with Times of India for its Fill in the Thanks campaign and with Zee Network to #SayThankYou to the unsung heroes during the lockdown. “We ended up selling around 15 million bars and could sponsor insurance for around 15,000 domestic workers,” he shared. The brand also came up with its much-talked-about ‘Iss Diwali Aap #KiseKhushKarenge?’ campaign where it used technology to acknowledge local shopkeepers. When asked what it translated into on-ground, Vishwanathan said, “It was a huge communication program where we needed to individually reach out to these businesses and take their legal approvals. While many of the businesses were skeptical at first because nothing like this had ever been done, eventually they got excited. People were excited too when they spotted the name of neighborhood shops in the ads.” On what the exact motive behind the campaign was, he added, “Clearly the motive was not to drive more Cadbury sale but to help these businesses get more visibility, and through that, to get people to gift more during Diwali. If people gifted more during Diwali, our products would also be gifted. The company is further planning a music concert which is first of its kind called the Vedic Trance, as a part of marketing strategy. Piyush said, “It is a beautiful amalgamation of Vedic chants and Rock music. We have roped in few young and talented musicians to work on this genre. The first Vedic Trance event will take place in Noida on the 1st January’2017.”
