Kargil, Nov 10 () Ladakh Member of Parliament Jamyang Tsering Namgyal on Tuesday inaugurated four new Reliance Jio mobile towers to the people of Zanskar while assuring them that more such installations would be erected and made functional in the next few months. A dozen towers were sanctioned for the sub-division under the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF) to provide better service to local residents, an official spokesman said. After inaugurating the mobile towers set up at Pibiting, Padum, Akshow and Abran areas, Namgyal congratulated the people of Zanskar for accessing mobile connectivity through the functioning of the four Jio towers and said the rest of the towers would be erected and made functional in the next few months. He expressed his gratitude to the Centre for according priority to the remotest and most backward areas of Ladakh like Zanskar to be digitised in a very short span of time. The MP also thanked the Union Minister for Telecommunication Ravi Shankar Prasad for sanctioning 54 towers for Ladakh parliamentary constituency under USOF while giving positive consideration to the demand projected by him in Parliament during the last winter session. Leh, Apr 28 () Two members of a family were tested positive for coronavirus in Ladakh, taking the total number of cases in the union territory to 22, a senior government official said on Tuesday. However, 16 of the patients were already cured and discharged from hospitals. "We have received 32 sample reports from NCDC (National Centre for Disease Control), New Delhi and two of them are positive," Commissioner Secretary (Health) Rigzin Samphel told reporters here. He said both the cases are members of the same family hailing from Sankoo village, which was already declared a containment zone last month. "They had returned to Kargil from Delhi on February 29. We have identified 29 contacts of these people and segregated them in high-risk and low-risk categories, besides taking their samples for testing," he said.Samphel said the 11 people in the high-risk category were shifted to isolation wards, while 18 others in the low-risk category were put under home quarantine. Meanwhile, over 230 stranded passengers left Leh in a fleet of 29 vehicles, including four SRTC buses, for their homes in Zanskar sub-division of Kargil district on Tuesday morning. With this, a total of over 850 residents of Zanskar who were left stranded in Leh and Kargil due to the lockdown imposed to curb the COVID-19 spread have reached their homes, the officials said, adding that they were directed to remain in home quarantine for the next 14 days. Kashmir is currently under the grip of 'Chillai-Kalan' -- the 40-day harshest winter period when a cold wave grips the region and the temperature drops considerably leading to the freezing of water bodies including the famous Dal Lake here as well as the water supply lines in several parts of the valley. The chances of snowfall are the most frequent and maximum during this period and most areas, especially in the higher reaches, receive heavy snowfall. While 'Chillai-Kalan' - which began on December 21 -- will end on January 31, the cold wave continues even after that in Kashmir with a 20-day-long 'Chillai-Khurd' (small cold) and a 10-day-long 'Chillai-Bachha' (baby cold).
