But he's not convinced that<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/yahoos-board-approves-11-billion-purchase-of-tumblr-2013-5"> buying Tumblr for $1.1 billion </a>was the best move the Yahoo CEO could have made.
"I'm probably a little more skeptical than many about the <keyword id="279713" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Tumblr">Tumblr</keyword> acquisition," he told <keyword id="6384660" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Wall-Street-Journal">Wall Street Journal</keyword> reporter <a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2013/07/10/hightail-goes-after-dropbox-with-unlimited-storage/">Rolfe Winkler during a video interview. </a>
Although Garlinghouse left Yahoo in 2008, he's got deep roots in the Valley and the Internet business. He's currently CEO of cloud storage company Hightail (formerly <keyword id="284311" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Yousendit">YouSendIt</keyword>), and an angel investor in a bunch of startups. He's <a href="http://www.crunchbase.com/financial-organization/crunchfund">also an investor</a> in CrunchFund, <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2012/05/21/crunchfund-took-a-stake-in-tumblr-buying-from-existing-investors/">a venture fund that had a stake in Tumblr</a>.
His problem with the Tumblr deal is that "most $1 billion+ acquisitions in the Internet" haven't panned out, or as he puts it, haven't been "value accretive."
He likened it to Yahoo's $3.6 billion acquisition of GeoCities back in 1999, before the Internet bubble popped. GeoCities was a popular website that let people create their own web pages. It was sort of the forerunner to sites like <keyword id="27899" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="MySpace">Myspace</keyword>, Facebook and Tumblr. <a href="http://geocities.yahoo.com/index.php">It no longer exists</a>.
He also thinks Tumblr creates "low value-added" content that doesn't draw top-dollar ads. He explained:
"There's almost an unending amount of low value-added inventory on the Internet ... I don't' think you have to be an econ major to understand that as supply grows and demand for <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="advertising">advertising</keyword> grows more modestly or is flat, that means prices go down. There's some companies focused around 'premium inventory.' Tumblr has a lower-value inventory today so it's not clear to me that it was an optimal acquisition for Yahoo."
On the other hand, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/marissa-mayer-wants-to-buy-two-failed-startups-this-morning-2013-6">he is a fan of Mayer's acqu-hire strategy</a>, where she's been buying a lot of smaller-priced startups to infuse Yahoo with fresh talent.
"Any great outcome starts with great people and Marissa has made it ok for really good people to go back to Yahoo again," he said.

It's an interesting choice. According to the <a href="http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/hightail">Merriam-Webster dictionary </a>it means: "to move at full speed or rapidly often in making a retreat."
It's usually used in the phrase "hightailed it" which refers to the way some animals, such as horses and rabbits, raise their tails high when fleeing danger, <a href="http://www.thefreedictionary.com/hightail+it">says the Free dictionary.</a>
As CEO Brad Garlinghouse <a href="http://blog.hightail.com/say-hi-to-hightail/">explains in a blog post,</a> the one thing the company didn't want to do was become another box (<keyword id="285445" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Dropbox">Dropbox</keyword>, Box) or another "sync" (SugarSync). "Hightail" definitely succeeds on that front.
"With a name that strides like a giant across a landscape of Boxes, Syncs and Shares alongside an audaciously elegant look that contrasts with the endless dreary blues of the cloud space, Hightail leads by example."
But the company is not hightailing it away from offering people a good old-fashioned bargain. It will now sell you <a href="http://www.yousendit.com/compare-plans">unlimited storage for $16/month</a>. Individual files are limited to 2GB apiece, but there's no cap as to how many you can store, it says.
This compares to Dropbox's <a href="https://www.dropbox.com/upgrade">$17-20/month for 200Gb on Dropbox (depending on if you pay annually or not)</a> and $15/month <a href="https://www.box.com/pricing/">for 1000 GB from Box</a>.

He's asking $3.45 million.
Garlinghouse first landed in the limelight in 2006 when he was a Yahoo exec. That's when he penned the famous memo known as the "Peanut Butter Manifesto" that accused Yahoo of being unfocused and spread too thin.
He's been the CEO of file-sharing service YouSendIt since May 2012. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/yousendit-brad-garlinghouse-versus-box-aaron-levie-2012-11">Revenues about doubled</a> from $35 million in 2011 to about $55 million in 2012. To celebrate, Garlinghouse bought <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/yousendit-ceo-brad-garlinghouse-just-gave-all-his-employees-an-ipad-mini-2012-12">every employee an iPad Mini</a> as a holiday gift.
Menlo Park is very close to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/aol-silicon-valley-2011-3">AOL's West Coast office in Palo Alto, Calif.</a>, where Garlinghouse worked until late 2011. But YouSendIt is based in Campbell, Calif., south of San Jose, which is a solid 30-minute drive from Menlo Park.
According to property records, Garlinghouse bought another house in Atherton, a leafy suburb favored by Google executives, in 2010.

His <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/bradgarlinghouse">LinkedIn profile verifies the move</a>. He's written "Goin' fishin'" as his current title and shows he left Hightail this month.
About a year ago, Garlinghouse rebranded the 10-year-old company YouSendIt, changing its name to Hightail, a name that was the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/yousendit-is-now-hightail-2013-7">subject of some criticism</a>. He also raised another $34 million to help Hightail compete with Box and Dropbox, bringing the total raised to $97.4 million since its inception in 2004, <a href="http://www.crunchbase.com/organization/hightail">according to Crunchbase.</a>
But, where competitors like Box and Dropbox have grown mighty and are marching to their IPOs, Hightail is far less visible. Cloud storage has become a difficult market, with companies like Microsoft and Google giving ever bigger chunks away of it to their users for free.
Garlinghouse is known in the Valley. He was formerly <a href="http://corp.aol.com/2010/05/12/brad-garlinghouse2/">AOL's president of commerce and applications</a> and the head of its Silicon Valley office, a job he left in 2011. He previously worked at Yahoo, overseeing products like Mail.
At Yahoo, back in 2006, he famously wrote a memo about Yahoo's problems called the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/what-i-got-wrong-in-the-peanut-butter-manifesto-2013-1">"Peanut Butter manifesto," which was leaked to the Wall Street Journal</a>. It accused Yahoo of not having focus and spreading itself too thin, a criticism that has stuck with the company over the years.
Brad Garlinghouse is also part of an "it" pair in the Valley. His sister, Meg Garlinghouse, is also well-known in the tech industry. She also worked at Yahoo for nearly a decade and now works at LinkedIn, heading up a program called "LinkedIn for Good," the company's employee philantrhopic effort.

A spokesperson confirmed the gift:
We wanted to acknowledge the hard work and accomplishments of all of our employees in 2012. During today’s biweekly All Hands meeting, we surprised our employees with iPad Minis as a small gesture of the company’s gratitude for their contributions.
Weiner didn't cheap out, either—one employee tells us they got the $429, 32-gigabyte model, not the less-expensive $329 model. At retail prices, that would cost around $1.5 million.
LinkedIn just reported a monster quarter where its revenues <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/linkedin-q4-earnings-2013-2">beat expectations by $25 million</a>. So that's a pretty nice way to share the windfall with employees.
It may be coincidence, but we have a pretty good idea of where Weiner might have gotten the idea: When he was a top executive at Yahoo, Weiner worked with Brad Garlinghouse. Garlinghouse is now CEO of YouSendIt, an enterprise file-sharing company, and he gave all of his employees iPad Minis <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/yousendit-ceo-brad-garlinghouse-just-gave-all-his-employees-an-ipad-mini-2012-12">over the holidays</a>.

Jeff Weiner Just Gave Every LinkedIn Employee An iPad Mini

And it's driving some people nuts.
People in our Twitter feed, and people in our office, are bellyaching about all the "lame" April Fools' pranks they're seeing.
In the tech world, April Fools' Day jokes are all over the place. From <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2013/04/01/apples-iwatch-is-actually-just-a-wrist-band-that-attaches-to-your-iphone-ipad/">news sites like TechCrunch</a>, to <a href="http://www.boxsharesyncdrop.com/">tech companies like YouSendIt</a>. Nearly every major company has some sort of prank.
But no company does April Fools' Day bigger than Google. In Steve Levy's book on Google he calls April 1 "the high holy day of Google culture."
It had <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Google%27s_hoaxes_and_easter_eggs#2013">15 different pranks today</a>.
While these things are whimsical, they aren't whimsical in approach, or execution. "The effort involves considerable organization, as ideas go through an elaborate approval process to find a place in the company’s ever-increasing roster of seasonal spoofs," writes Levy. He says they take months of planning.
Part of the reason Google does the pranks is to keep the company's loose culture intact. It wants to be a place where people can "play" and not turn into some boring corporation.
So, while the techno snoots might snort that <a href="http://www.buzzfeed.com/jwherrman/its-time-for-huge-tech-companies-to-stop-the-april-fools-jok">Google needs to stop because it's a big corporation</a>, Google would argue the exact opposite — it needs pranks and fun to keep itself from being a big boring company.
And to the people that think the jokes are lame, all we can say is that some people like them.
For instance, the world's number two golfer, <a href="https://twitter.com/McIlroyRory/status/318818838852542467">Rory McIlroy tweeted</a>, "Anyone else been fooled today by google nose!? I've been sniffing my phone for the last 10 minutes and not smelling anything!! Haha idiot! ??"

Why Google Does April Fools' Day Pranks Even Though Everyone Hates Them

In a 2012 survey, PricewaterhouseCoopers found that as much as one-third of the money companies spent on technology was for these "shadow IT" apps.
Sometimes employees buy apps to get their work done faster. Sometimes the apps are really for fun, but they've loaded them on their PCs, smartphone, or tablets connected to corporate networks.
A startup that launched last week, <a href="http://www.skyhighnetworks.com/news/press_releases/11/detail/">Skyhigh Networks</a>, helps IT departments discover these shadow apps so IT departments can stop or control them. It's been in beta with a handful of Fortune 2,000 companies like Cisco and General Electric.
Based on the scans it's done with its beta customers, <keyword id="1761502" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Skyhigh">Skyhigh</keyword> came up with a list of the top 50 shadow IT apps that employees use at work. Most of these we've heard of, but a few surprised us.
