Google down memes flood social media after Gmail, YouTube and other Google services outage

<ul><li>Gmail, YouTube and Google Docs crashed for users across the world was down for nearly an hour on December 14.</li><li>Gmail and Google Docs were not loading on web browsers and the mobile apps were also not refreshing. </li><li>However, YouTube can be accessed if users login using the incognito mode on Chrome.</li></ul>In hour-long outage Gmail, YouTube and Google Docs was down for users in India as well as across the world. Google's online services within G Suite like Google Meets awere unable to load. YouTube, Gmail, Google Meet, Google Docs and Play Store restored for some users as others still face outage

<ul class="summary-list"><li>YouTube brought in less money from advertising than last year in the wake of a slowing economy and competition from TikTok.</li><li>Insider recently reported that TikTok is poaching ad dollars away from YouTube, Meta, and Snap. </li></ul><p>YouTube brought in less money from advertising this summer than it did last year in the wake of a slowing economy and the rise of TikTok. </p><p>The video-streaming service, owned by Alphabet, generated revenue of less than $7.1 billion for the third quarter of 2022, compared to $7.2 billion a year earlier. </p><p>While the difference may be small, it marked the first time that YouTube ad revenue shrank since Alphabet started reporting the division's revenue separately since the fourth quarter of 2019, according to Insider Intelligence, a research firm owned by Insider's parent company — and it may spell bigger issues for YouTube down the line. </p><p>Many experts attribute decelerating ad revenues for internet companies to the economic slowdown, which has caused advertisers to tighten their purse strings.</p><p>Overall, YouTube's parent company seems to be feeling the sting of that slowdown. Alphabet reported earnings and revenue below Wall Street's expectations on Tuesday. The stock fell more than 5% in after-hours trading. </p><p>But that may not be the only factor contributing to stalling revenues at YouTube.</p><p>Insider recently reported that TikTok is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/youtubes-shorts-stiffens-competition-with-tiktok-and-metas-reels-2022-9">poaching ad budgets</a> from ad-based social networks like Meta, Snap, and YouTube. </p><p>YouTube appears to be ready to step up the competition, announcing late last month that it would give creators for YouTube Shorts <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/youtubes-shorts-stiffens-competition-with-tiktok-and-metas-reels-2022-9">a cut of their ad revenue</a>, seemingly to try to attract talent away from TikTok, which notoriously <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiktokers-say-low-creator-fund-pay-affecting-their-mental-health-2022-7">doesn't pay creators well</a>. </p><p>"We are focused on both investing responsibly for the long term and being responsive to the economic environment," Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said in a statement. </p>

For starters, update the YouTube app on your Roku. Using the remote control, select the YouTube app and then press the <strong>asterisk (*) </strong>button. In the pop-up menu, choose <strong>Check for updates</strong> and let Roku install an update for the app, if there is one. Now try YouTube again.  </p><h2>Restart your Roku</h2><div type="image" title="Restarting a Roku" height="2448" width="4355" msid="90085127" hostid="261"></div><p>The problem might be related to cached software on your Roku, so the next thing to try is to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-reset-roku" target="_blank" rel="noopener">restart the Roku</a>. It's possible that there's a bug or some software glitch in your version of the Roku OS that's now preventing YouTube from running properly. If there's an update available, install it.  </p><h2>Reinstall the YouTube app</h2><p>If all else fails, you might be able to get YouTube working by <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/remove-channels-from-roku" target="_blank" rel="noopener">uninstalling and then reinstalling the app</a>. This will flush out the data cache, which might be causing a glitch. To do that, select the YouTube app in the list of apps on the Roku home page and then press the <strong>asterisk (*) </strong>button. 7 ways to troubleshoot if YouTube is not working on your Roku device

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Elon Musk blamed advertisers for a "massive drop in revenue" at Twitter.</li><li>He also threatened to "thermonuclear name and shame" advertisers who paused spending.</li></ul><p>Before taking control of Twitter, Elon Musk <a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1585619322239561728?s=20&amp;t=4_jtLzoGCgLImbypNNzVVg">tweeted an open letter</a> promising advertisers that Twitter wouldn't become a "free-for-all hellscape."</p><p>On Thursday, he took part in a listening tour on Madison Avenue, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-meets-to-reassure-twitter-advertisers-on-brand-safety-video-2022-11">seeking to assure advertisers that "brand safety" would be a top priority.</a></p><p>But some advertisers have begun to pull back, with companies <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/companies-ads-twitter-advertising-elon-musks-takeover-2022-11">like General Motors pausing spending on the platform and advertising firms like Interpublic Group and Havas advising their clients to do the same.</a></p><p>After advertisers paused spending, Musk went on the offensive, <a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1588538640401018880">tweeting that they were causing a "massive drop in revenue.</a>" He continued: "Extremely messed up! They're trying to destroy free speech in America."</p><p>He also blocked (and later unblocked) at least one exec who had participated in Musk's listening tour: </p><p>Then Musk threatened to "thermonuclear name and shame" advertisers who paused spending on Twitter. </p><p>Musk is explicitly threatening advertisers, which is a dumb move for multiple reasons. Let's get into them.</p><h2>Advertising is Twitter's most significant source of revenue by far</h2><p><a href="https://d18rn0p25nwr6d.cloudfront.net/CIK-0001418091/947c0c34-ca90-4099-b328-a6062adf110f.pdf">Twitter made $5 billion in revenue last year,</a> according to the company's 2021 earnings report. Of that, $4.5 billion, or nearly 90%, was from advertising. Like Meta or Google, Twitter's core business is selling ads.</p><p>The advertising climate is already challenging. A Standard Media Index report found that total advertising spending was down by 5% year-over-year in September.</p><p>Other advertising giants like YouTube and Meta reported year-over-year declines in advertising revenue, with YouTube down by 2% and Meta down by 4%.</p><p>Even before Musk took charge, advertisers were already leaving Twitter. A report from MediaRadar showed the total number of advertisers on Twitter went from 3,900 in May this year to 2,900 in September. </p><p>Musk is now threatening any advertiser still using Twitter that he'll retaliate if they stop spending for whatever reason during a harsh macroeconomic climate. As Terry Kawaja, the CEO of Luma Partners, pointed out, it's not a great sales pitch.</p><h2>Advertisers don't need Twitter</h2><p>What Musk may or may not understand is that advertisers don't need Twitter. Rival companies Meta and Alphabet have ad offerings that are difficult to replicate. </p><p>Meta's direct-response advertising business — ads that convert eyeballs into downloads, sales, or newsletter signups — was <a href="https://stratechery.com/2022/digital-advertising-in-2022/">unrivaled</a> until recently, even if it has been weakened by Apple's recent changes to mobile tracking. </p><p>Google's search-engine ads are essential spending for any business that wants its products to stay visible. And YouTube is one of the few places that serve as a replacement for broadcast-TV advertising.</p><p>Twitter, meanwhile, has always specialized in brand advertising — ads meant to engender goodwill in consumers — and <a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.theinformation.com%2Farticles%2Fwhy-twitter-has-lagged-rivals-like-snap-in-advertising">lagged in direct-response ads</a>, with a split of <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/twitter-earnings-shed-little-light-on-ad-progress-11651183309">85% brand advertising to 15% direct response in 2021</a>. </p><p>The competition for brand advertising is fierce, with plenty of options for advertisers to pick from (including media outlets like this one). Advertisers can safely dial back spending on Twitter and know they can shift that spending elsewhere without issue.</p><p>Brand advertising relies highly on "brand safe" outlets where ads won't appear near objectionable content like violence, pornography, or hate speech. Meanwhile, during Twitter's 50% staff cuts, <a href="https://twitter.com/yoyoel/status/1588657228462317568">15% of Twitter's Trust and Safety team was laid off, said Yael Roth</a>, Twitter's head of safety and integrity. (Roth said front-line moderation teams were untouched.)</p><p>Ben Thompson, a tech and media analyst, wrote that Twitter "failed to build a reliable direct response advertising business (either through incompetence or because the platform is fundamentally unsuited to it, or both)." Brand advertisers, he continued, are much more sensitive to where they place advertising. "This, by extension," Thompson wrote, "means these companies have much more influence on Twitter, as Musk appears to be discovering."</p><p>Jason Kint, the CEO of the trade organization Digital Content Next, posted a long thread pointing out that Twitter is stuck between two models: premium brand advertising, where a lack of transparency around moderation makes brands nervous, and cheap direct response, where Twitter can't compete.<br /><br /></p><p>In short: Musk lacks any real leverage beyond threatening to sic his 110 million followers on brands that displease him. It may be satisfying to Musk in the short term, but it's hard to see how it will reassure any brand that committing ad dollars to Twitter makes sense.</p><h2>Advertising pauses are common. A CEO threatening advertisers isn't.</h2><p>Musk is taking all of this a bit too personally. Advertisers usually pull back from platforms during times of upheaval or uncertainty. </p><p>Advertisers pause spending on YouTube regularly in response to controversies, including significant boycotts from <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-02-21/youtube-s-latest-dilemma-deepens-as-kellogg-pauses-ad-spending">advertisers in 2017</a> and <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-02-21/youtube-s-latest-dilemma-deepens-as-kellogg-pauses-ad-spending">2019.</a> </p><p>Advertisers halted Meta ad spending on a regular basis in the past decade, including a moment in <a href="https://www.searchenginejournal.com/digiday-reveals-56-of-advertisers-paused-facebook-spend-in-july/375763/">July 2020 when 56% of advertisers paused all spending on the platform.</a></p><p>Those advertisers returned because they needed the reach these platforms provide. But Alphabet's CEO, Sundar Pichai, and Meta's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg,  didn't threaten those brands, especially not via the platforms they want advertisers to use.</p><h2>Finding alternate revenue streams to replace advertising won't be easy</h2><p>Musk, of course, is not like other CEOs. His belligerence toward advertisers might be part of his plan to make Twitter less reliant on advertising revenue. His breakneck pace in rolling out the enhanced subscription product Twitter Blue could be proof of that. </p><p>But the math of replacing advertising revenue on Twitter is daunting.</p><p>Per MediaRadar, General Motors spent an average of $1.7 million a month on Twitter before pausing its ads. Interpublic Group, which recommended its clients like Amazon, MGM, and Bank of America pause spending, accounted for an average of $31 million in monthly ad spend. Havas, which also recommended a pause to brands like Progressive and Netflix, averaged $7.5 million in monthly spending. </p><p>To replace the $40 million in lost monthly revenue, Twitter would need to sign up a little over 5 million Twitter Blue accounts, costing $8 a month, in its first month.</p><p>For comparison, <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/hbo-max-reached-41-million-subscribers-one-month-launch-1303735/">HBO Max signed up 4.1 million new users in its first month</a>. How likely is it that the new Twitter Blue will have a more successful launch than the streaming service offering "Game of Thrones" and every episode of "Friends"?</p><p>The other significant source of revenue for Twitter has been data licensing or selling information about user demographics to other companies, which brought in $500 million in 2021. <p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>New York Knicks rookie Kristaps Porzingis has arrived much quicker than anyone anticipated.<p>After being selected with the No. 4 pick in this year's draft, to a smattering of boos from New York fans, Porzingis was deemed a project - a player whose long-term potential would outweigh what he could immediately produce.</p><p>Instead, after a 29-point, 11-rebound performance in a win over the Charlotte Hornets, Porzingis is already way ahead of what people thought he would be capable of in his rookie season.</p><p>Porzingis, of course, knew this was coming. <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2015/11/18/sports/basketball/kristaps-porzingis-new-york-knicks-charlotte-hornets.html">He told reporters</a> after reaching&#xa0;his career-high points in the win, "Everybody was saying that I was a project, to wait a few years. I will get better in a few years, but I knew I was able to play right now. That was my mentality."</p><p><a href="http://espn.go.com/blog/newyork-knicks/post/_/id/63541/melo-on-porzingis-big-night-this-will-be-the-first-of-many">Carmelo Anthony said of Porzingis' big night</a>: "I knew he was ready … I'm pretty sure this will be the first of many that you all see."</p><p>Each game, Porzingis has shown off a different aspect of his diverse game, gradually looking more and more comfortable on the court.</p><p>His put-back dunks have made him a mainstay in the highlight reels:</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>On Tuesday night, he showed off less flashy plays, but nonetheless impressive moves, like a "Dream Shake," made famous by Hakeem Olajuwon, for a baseline jumper:</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Or muscling among two Hornets players for an offensive rebound, put-back layup, plus the foul. Impressive, considering his slender 7-foot-3, 240-pound frame.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Down the stretch of the game, Porzingis heard chants of "Por-zin-gis!" and perhaps sarcastically "M-V-P!" from the MSG crowd.</p><p>While there's a clear sense of confidence from him, he clearly is humbled by the attention and appreciation, too.</p><p><div></div></p><p class="embed-spacer">However, it's not just the lovable personality or highlight plays that make him special - there are other signs of a legitimately great player in the 20-year-old Porzingis.</p><p class="embed-spacer">For instance, he's been, statistically, one of the Knicks' best players this season. He leads them in rebounds per game (thought to be one of his weaknesses before the season) and they're outscoring opponents by six points per 100 possessions when he's on the court. When he's on the bench, the Knicks are <em>being outscored</em> by six points per 100 possessions. With Porzingis on the court, the Knicks have a team-best 95 defensive rating, meaning they're allowing opponents to score 95 points per 100 possessions - their defensive rating as a whole is 100.&#xa0;</p><p><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nba-ball-dont-lie/kristaps-porzingis--career-high-29-points-helps-push-knicks-past-hornets-053808701.html">As Yahoo's Dan Devine notes</a>, Porzingis' 29-and-11 game before his 21st birthday puts him in elite company. Some of the other players to do it at such a young age: Shaquille O'Neal, LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Dwight Howard, Chris Bosh, Carmelo Anthony, and Anthony Davis, to name a few.</p><p>Others around the NBA world are just flat-out impressed with what Porzingis is doing already:</p><p><div></div></p><p class="embed-spacer"><div></div></p><p class="embed-spacer"><div></div></p><p class="embed-spacer">In the <a href="http://www.nba.com/news/features/john_schuhmann/nba-com-2015-16-gm-survey/#rookies">NBA's GM Survey</a> prior to the season, Porzingis didn't receive any votes for Rookie of the Year (in a survey that included his own GM), didn't receive any votes for biggest steal where he was selected in the draft, and didn't finish in the top five in votes for best rookie five years from now.</p><p class="embed-spacer">Now, Porzingis would be a legitimate candidate for Rookie of the Year, particularly because the Knicks are off to a decent 6-6 start and he's been a big part of it.</p><p class="embed-spacer">At some point this season, Porzingis will hit an inevitable rookie wall. While he's made contributions all over the floor, he's still only shooting 41% from the field and 26% from three-point range.
