As per the patent filing, Xiaomi designed the camera module to house both front as well as rear cameras. Although we have seen several smartphones with pop-up cameras, this design is the first one where front and rear cameras are housed in the same pop-up module. As per a <a href="https://shotbytes.com/patent-leaks/" data-type="tilCustomLink">report</a>, Xiaomi could be gearing up to launch a device with up to 7 pop-up cameras. Xiaomi's <a href="http://epub.cnipa.gov.cn/tdcdesc.action?strWhere=CN305552706S">patent design</a> suggests that there could be up to seven camera sensors in total. Out of these seven sensors, five would be used as rear cameras and two as front cameras. It also suggests that all the seven cameras will be housed in the same pop-up camera module. All cameras would be hidden when not in use Essentially, this would hide all the cameras when they are not in use. This might seem like a handy feature both in terms of design as well as privacy. The Xiaomi patent also shows that the company is considering a few variations of the camera design, starting with four cameras. While the front will always have two cameras, there could be two, three, four and five rear cameras. Xiaomi patents a new smartphone design with 7 pop-up cameras

Beijing, Chinese smartphone maker <keyword id="874458" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Xiaomi">Xiaomi</keyword> has patented seven different <keyword id="952924" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Foldable">foldable</keyword> <keyword id="4473603" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="smartphone-designs">smartphone designs</keyword>. The <keyword id="17403" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="patent">patent</keyword> was published on January 1 and contains overall seven foldable smartphone designs. Out of the <keyword id="9247874" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="total-count">total count</keyword>, three models feature clamshell form factor, reports Digitimes. Apart from three clamshell foldable phone designs, Xiaomi has also patented four large screen foldable smartphones that unfold into a tablet. All of them look like 'Galaxy Z Fold 2' with some minor differences between them. Earlier, Xiaomi had filed a patent for a foldable smartphone with a quad-camera system that rotates forward for selfies and back for regular photos. The smartphone maker filed the design patent for an inward bending phone in China and also put 48 images to showcase the handset. 'China's Steve Jobs' Just Introduced These New Smartphones

India is the first country outside the US to start the <keyword id="20805504" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="local-production" source="keywords">local production</keyword> of the seven-seater electric SUV. EQS SUV 580 4MATIC is the second model, after the EQS sedan, to be locally produced at company's Pune-based manufacturing plant. "This will be our sixth EV in India, and the second car to be locally produced in India. We are also proud that India becomes the first market out of the US to locally manufacture the EQS," Mercedes-Benz India Managing Director and CEO Santosh Iyer told PTI in an interaction. The move to manufacture the product locally outlines the company's commitment to electrification and increasing product portfolio offering choices to customers, he added. "EQS SUV's localisation underpins our deep commitment to grow the Indian <keyword id="23188213" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="luxury-electric-car" source="keywords">luxury electric car</keyword> market and reinforce our commitment for a greener and sustainable future," Iyer said. The move also supports the government's vision of Make-in-India, he said. Iyer said local production has led to a significant advantage in terms of pricing the electric SUV. The introductory price of EQS SUV 580 4MATIC starts at Rs 1.41 crore which should also make a lot of customers shift to EVs much faster in terms of transition, he said. When asked about the demand for green vehicles, Iyer said the sales of EVs were growing in the country with even high-end products finding acceptance. "The EQA sedan which was introduced in India around 18 months back, we have sold more than 500 cars. It's a car costing more than Rs 1.6 crore. Our total penetration of EVs is 5 per cent today, it's growing. For sure, customer acceptance is there," he stated. Iyer noted that the company remains committed to offer top-end luxury EV products offering higher range in the market. He noted that there may be more opportunities in the entry EV segment but the focus of the company firmly remains on bringing luxury products in the market. "To bring products at lower price points, that is not our current strategy," Iyer said. The company aims to offer products with higher driving range, a factor that leads to bigger battery and escalation in price, he added. The EQS SUV 580 4MATIC is India's longest range electric SUV with ARAI certified range of 809 kms. Iyer said the company remains committed to the Indian market and has announced an additional investment of Rs 200 crore earlier towards manufacturing operations, new product start-ups and digitisation of manufacturing processes. The company till date has invested over Rs 3,000 crore in India, he added. In the January-September period this year, Mercedes-Benz India has launched three new BEVs ' EQA, EQS SUV 580 and Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 SUV. With the EQS SUV 580 4MATIC, the company now offers the EQA, EQB, EQE SUV, EQS SUV, EQS sedan and Maybach EQS SUV 680 in the market. While the power button has a good, tactile feel to it, the volume buttons aren’t as clicky. However, I realised it’s possible to get used to it. Overall, the flat finish – both on the front as well as the back – makes the Redmi Note 11 Pro+ 5G seem a little boxy. The display comes with a punch-hole notch that houses the selfie camera. I found the display to be vivid, with excellent colour reproduction and adequate brightness. The contents are easily visible even under direct sunlight, with the phone hitting the 700 nits level thanks to a feature called sunlight boost. The phone supports two refresh rates – 60Hz and 120Hz. I set the phone at 120Hz throughout my testing, and the overall experience was smooth across apps. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Redmi Note 11 Pro+ 5G – Performance and battery" comment="subhead" text="Redmi Note 11 Pro+ 5G – Performance and battery">Redmi Note 11 Pro+ 5G – Performance and battery</cmsannotation> The Redmi Note 11 Pro+ 5G is equipped with the Snapdragon 695 chipset coupled with up to 8GB LPDDR4X RAM and 256GB of UFS 2.2 internal storage. While the memory and storage are fast, the chipset might seem slow – however, in day-to-day usage, it is pretty fast, even with a 120Hz refresh rate display. One of the two areas where the chipset shows its weakness is in games – while titles like Battlegrounds Mobile India play well enough for the most part, there were some noticeable stutters at times. The other is the fact that the Redmi Note 11 Pro+ 5G does not support HDR10 videos, nor can it record 1080p videos at 60 frames per second (fps). Moving on to power efficiency, the Redmi Note 11 Pro+ 5G is powered by a 5,000mAh battery with 67W fast charge support. In regular usage, with over an hour of calling – voice and video, plenty of texting, multitasking, a few pictures and streaming videos, the phone lasted me an entire day comfortably. The Redmi Note 11 Pro+ 5G also supports seven 5G bands, so in terms of future-proofing, this phone is well-equipped. Although Xiaomi missed the bus on launching the phone with Android 12, it might not be that big of a deal considering the fact that this update has been relatively buggy on other Android phones. That brings me to MIUI 13 – it is the latest version of Xiaomi’s custom skin, and as a fan of minimal Android skins like Google’s flavour for Pixel phones, or OnePlus’ OxygenOS, MIUI 13 looked and felt surprisingly fresh. Xiaomi has been known for offering a wide range of customisation options with its MIUI custom skin, but optimisation and refinement were two areas where the company had its task cut out. A lot of work has gone into those aspects with MIUI 13 and the result is surprisingly good. MIUI 13 addresses some of my pet peeves with Xiaomi phones in the past, which includes the recent apps screen. You can finally choose between the card layout or grid, and get rid of the memory information if you want an even cleaner experience. In my experience, Xiaomi seems to have also scaled back significantly in regards to notifications and advertisements – while I did come across a random app notification occasionally, I have not seen ads in system apps yet. With that said, though, there are hardly any phones that offer a premium design and a high quality 120Hz Super AMOLED display in this price range. This is the second in a series of articles analysing the impact of 5G mobile technology on people's everyday lives. In Hangzhou, capital of eastern China's Zhejiang province and one of the country's major technology hubs, evidence of the city's smart infrastructure can be gleaned from how its public services function. Police officers are notified of major car accidents soon after they happen, traffic lights automatically adjust to changes in the volume of vehicles on the road, and in emergencies, fire trucks and ambulances are not stopped by a single red light until they arrive at the scene. Those advances are enabled by Hangzhou's City Brain project, a cloud computing and artificial intelligence-driven urban traffic-management system. It covers a total area of 420 square kilometres, which is about the size of seven Manhattans - referring to the most densely populated of the five boroughs of New York City. When 5G mobile services start to roll out worldwide from next year, smart cities such as Hangzhou are expected to get smarter as the next-generation wireless technology helps industries realise the full potential of the internet of things (IoT). "From 2G to 3G to 4G, all of them serve people," said Cui Kai, a Beijing-based IoT analyst with technology research firm IDC. "But 5G, from the beginning of its infrastructure design, has the internet of things in mind." IoT envisions a self-configuring, adaptive and complex network that interconnects physical objects, each containing embedded technology to communicate, gather data and interact with mobile applications or other networks. The stakes are high for industries around the world, as global spending on IoT is forecast to exceed US$1 trillion in 2022, up from an estimated US$745 billion this year, according to IDC. It said adoption of IoT was happening across industries, in governments and in consumers' daily lives. Data generated by connected devices is now helping companies run more efficiently and gain insight into business processes, while consumers' access to data is changing how they are informed about the status of households, vehicles and family members, as well as their own health and fitness. "The next chapter of IoT is just beginning, as we see a shift from digitally enabling the physical to automating and augmenting the human experience with a connected world," said Carrie MacGillivray, vice-president for IoT and mobility at IDC, in a recent report. That shift is likely to become apparent as 5G networks are rolled out around the world. With peak data rates up to 20 times faster than 4G, 5G will serve as "the connective tissue" for IoT, autonomous cars, smart cities and new mobile applications - providing the backbone for the industrial internet, according to a Deloitte report. On the consumer side, 5G smartphone users will be able to send high-resolution 4K video within a few seconds, and both video games and apps based on augmented and virtual reality technologies will be seamless. The 5G networks will also be able to support the growing number of connected devices globally, from fitness-tracking watches to internet-linked televisions and smart speakers at home. The International Telecommunications Union, the United Nations agency overseeing development of the "IMT 2020" global standard for 5G, said the new wireless technology would support 1 million connected devices per square kilometre; 1 millisecond latency (representing the nearly instant time a packet of data takes to get from one point to another); greater efficiency in terms of power and use of radio spectrum; and a peak data download rate of up to 20 gigabits per second. <a href="https://www.scmp.com/tech/big-tech/article/3006582/power-change-world-heres-why-us-and-china-are-fighting-over-our-5g">With the power to change the world, here's why the US and China are fighting over our 5G future</a> The agency works in tandem with the 3rd Generation Partnership Project, an international collaboration of seven telecoms standard development organisations, which has approved the much-anticipated global technology specifications for 5G. That has kicked off work on initial deployments this year by some of the world's largest telecoms network operators. At the crux of many IoT applications is latency. For a YouTube viewer, it means the delay between clicking the play button and the moment when the video starts streaming. 5G networks will provide better latency than the average 50 milliseconds on 4G networks, enabling IoT applications that require near instantaneous data transmission such as remote surgery. In March, China conducted its first remote surgery using robots with the support of a 5G network deployed by telecoms operator China Mobile and supplied by Huawei Technologies, according to state media. During the three-hour procedure, a surgeon implanted a neurostimulator device into the brain of a Parkinson's disease patient in Beijing with the aid of robotic arms, which were remotely controlled about 3,000km away. Remote surgeries are widely expected to enable more doctors to help their colleagues at smaller institutions or in disaster areas. Low latency is also key to the smooth operation of autonomous vehicles. Sensors in a self-driving car gather information - from road conditions and nearby obstacles to traffic accidents along the way - and send the data to the car's on-board computer or to a cloud computing platform to make instant decisions. Seamless machine-to-machine communication would also be an important asset in military operations. A group of soldiers, for example, can wear smart wristwatches to know each other's location and vital signs as they operate in a tropical forest, for example, where satellite communications do not work. While 4G now allows up to 100 devices to talk with each other simultaneously within a radius of 500 meters, 5G can handle a lot more devices using the same communications protocol, according to Wilson Chow, a telecoms analyst with PwC China. <a href="https://www.scmp.com/tech/gear/article/2189069/chinas-tech-moguls-bet-5g-help-lift-economy-amid-increased-security">China's tech moguls bet on 5G to help lift economy amid increased security scrutiny in the West</a> 5G's ability to handle massive amounts of data in ultra-fast speed also comes to play in industrial manufacturing and supply chains. While robots have already taken over the assembly lines in car assembly plants, 5G will allow someone sitting at headquarters to monitor the operations of dozens of factories in different cities in real time. That would be made possible by chips installed in fast-moving machinery, such as robotic arms and conveyor belts. In February, Swedish telecoms equipment maker Ericsson and China Unicom unveiled their 5G-powered <keyword id="24019" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="automation">automation</keyword> project at the Port of Qingdao in the eastern coastal province of Shandong. The initiative aims to slash 70 per cent of labour costs in one of the world's busiest container terminals. "In the future, manufacturing plants and retailers can achieve efficiency with improved workflows because every data point will be gathered, processed and analysed in real time," said Chow. For consumers, 5G is expected to broaden the use of smart home devices like voice-activated speakers and other advanced internet-linked appliances. The <keyword id="35145" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-market">global market</keyword> for smart electric household appliances, for example, is projected to reach 1.5 billion units by 2020 when commercial 5G networks are online, according to data from analytics firm Dun &amp; Bradstreet. Such a trend will help grow the number of so-called smart homes to about 300 million worldwide by 2022, according to an estimate by ABI Research. <a href="https://www.scmp.com/tech/gear/article/3004743/us-catches-china-5g-readiness-race-heats-ultra-fast-mobile-networks">US catches up with China in 5G readiness as race heats up for ultra-fast mobile networks</a> Technology giants like Amazon.com, Google, Apple and China's Xiaomi Corp have already ratcheted up their efforts to churn out more smart devices, including speakers, vacuum cleaners and rice cookers, remotely controlled via smartphone apps or voice assistants. With 5G, uniform network connectivity and even energy savings would be realised as these devices are linked to the internet. "Previously, you needed to think about how much data you could send between devices and the cloud," said Werner Vogels, chief technology officer at Amazon, in an interview last month. "With 5G, companies will no longer be constrained. Every device, even your clock on the wall, could become internet connected." In China, which has the world's biggest internet population and largest smartphone market, the benefits of IoT adoption are expected to become widespread as 5G data consumption is encouraged by the government and telecoms operators, according to PwC's Chow. That would help take Hangzhou's City Brain, a project backed by e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding, to the next level. Alibaba is the parent company of the South China Morning Post. With 5G networks, Hangzhou's City Brain will be able to process greater amounts of data gathered from a range of IoT units, including lamp posts, manhole covers and electricity meters. The advanced mobile infrastructure would enable sensors to be deployed in underground pipes to find water leakage. "Every asset can be connected through the internet," said IDC's Cui. Under Chinese laws, internet companies operating in the country are required to store user data at local servers - and allow authorities to inspect those assets when deemed necessary. China has an estimated 200 million surveillance cameras, which amounts to about one camera for every seven people. The combination of 5G and IoT resources could turn a smart electricity meter into a real-time surveillance tool to tell whether someone is at home or not. "You can imagine after 5G is rolled out, China would like to make the whole country a smart country," said PwC's Chow. How 5G will unlock the industrial internet, driving another dimension of mobile connectivity

At a press conference in New Delhi, <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> unveiled the first series of <keyword id="2373897" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Android-One">Android One</keyword> smartphones in India. Sundar Pichai, Senior Vice President for <keyword id="6355645" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="android">Android</keyword>, Chrome and Apps at Google was there as he was at the Google I/O developer event earlier this year, announcing the Android One initiative to bring a rich Android experience to affordable smartphones. 
 
Android One 
The vision of Android One is to bring stock Android with timely software updates to sub-$100 smartphones. Essentially, it’s Nexus for the masses. 
 
In an aberration from the usual course and like the Nexus and Google Play Edition products, Google will push the Android updates as and when they come instead of the OEMs. The devices will be automatically updated; the box of an Android` One device asserts ‘Always the latest version of Android’. 
 
The Android One devices will include support for seven additional languages including Hindi and users will not have to download any external application to access their Android One smartphones in Hindi. 
 
Devices 
The smartphone vendors that Google has partnered with for the first wave of devices in India are Micromax, Karbonn, and Spice; three OEMs who lead the market in the budget smartphone segment. 
 The three devices announced are <keyword id="6378177" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Spice">Spice</keyword> Dream UNO Mi-498, Micromax Canvas A1, and Karbonn Sparkle V. The Spice Dream UNO and Micromax Canvas A1 are available in black and white, while the Karbonn Sparkle V is available in blue, grey, red, and white colors. 
 
As was announced at the Google I/O event, these smartphones come with a 4.5-inch IPS display (480x854), dual SIM card slots, microSD card slot, and FM radio. Essentially, these three are same devices internally, which just differ in design and build. 
 Packing in a 1.3 GHz quad-core <keyword id="6369515" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mediatek">MediaTek</keyword> processor and 1 GB RAM, these devices include 4 GB of internal storage and a 1700mAh battery. The phones feature a 5-megapixel autofocus rear camera and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. 
 
Pricing 
The only bullet point of the pitch that the Android One smartphones don’t keep up to is the promise of sub-$100 smartphones. In a competitive, and crowded, price segment, the devices are priced starting at ₹6399. It wasn’t a bad price at the start of this year, but now it will disappoint most. 
 There’s <keyword id="11148" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Motorola">Motorola</keyword>’s Moto E with stock Android and timely updates, which is sold at similar price-point with better hardware specifications. And the latest disruptor on the block, the Xiaomi Redmi 1S takes the crown with great specifications, although running an Android fork. 
 Google has tied up with <keyword id="15491" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Airtel">Airtel</keyword> for special data plans for Android One smartphones. Airtel customers get free access to Google services like operating system and software updates. Also, all customers get 200MB worth of apps per month for six months at no cost. 
 
Availability 
The Android One smartphones will be exclusively sold via online retails immediately, and interestingly Google has picked up three leading online retailers for three devices. Since the devices are pretty much the same, you could also make a decision based on your preference for a particular online store. 
 The Micromax Canvas A1 would be available on <keyword id="6354743" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Amazon-India">Amazon India</keyword>, the Spice Dream UNO will be available on Flipkart, and the Karbonn Sparkle V will be available on Snapdeal. Google has also announced that before the festive season of Diwali next month, the devices will also be available in brick and mortar stores. 
 
What’s Next 
Android One is a big bet for Google in India, and the region is clearly the ground zero for the initiative. Google plans to expand Android One to Indonesia, Philippines, and other South Asian countries by the end of 2014 and in more countries in 2015. In India, more devices will follow in coming months in price bands above and below the latest range. 
 At the event, Google also announced the next set of partners for the Android One initiative. These include <keyword id="104695" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Qualcomm">Qualcomm</keyword>, and OEMs like Acer, Alcatel Onetouch, HTC, Lenovo, <keyword id="6367990" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Panasonic">Panasonic</keyword>, XOLO, Lava, Intex, and Asus. Glaring omissions from the list are <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword> and <keyword id="6356116" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="LG">LG</keyword>.
