Momo, said on Tuesday that it has raised Rs 410 crore (around $49 million) in its Series D round led by <keyword id="20202119" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="khazanah" source="keywords">Khazanah</keyword> Nasional Berhad, the sovereign wealth fund of Malaysia, and <keyword id="20210924" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="oaks" source="keywords">OAKS</keyword> Asset Management. Khazanah led the round by investing Rs 350 crore, while existing investor OAKS invested the remaining Rs 60 crore, according to the company. Wow! Momo said that the funding will be used to grow and expand the QSR brand. It will also invest in distribution, research and development (R&amp;D). "There is no greater joy for a founder than giving its initial investors (Indian Angel Network and Lighthouse Funds) great partial exits. For us, the Bharat Story has just begun with a huge headway of growth," said <keyword id="20205381" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sagar-daryani" source="keywords">Sagar Daryani</keyword>, CEO and Co-founder of Wow! Momo Foods. "With Khazanah's investment into the business and their long-term approach, we will strive to become the powerhouse of innovation and transformation in the food space while keeping a strong balance between sustainability, growth and backing breakthroughs," he added. Khazanah has backed companies like <keyword id="20006421" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="xpressbees" source="keywords">Xpressbees</keyword>, Flipkart, TransUnion CIBIL and others in India. Moreover, the company said that it aims to enter more than 100 cities and increase its footprint to over 1,500 stores in the next three years. At present, the company has 630 outlets across 25 cities. "We aim to encourage the growth of Wow! Momo through enhanced scalability, technological fortification, and focusing on building a strong back-end capability to support its growth," said Dato' Amirul Feisal Wan Zahir, Managing Director, Khazanah.

With the latest funding, startup’s valuation jumped almost by three times, from ₹300 crore to ₹860 crore in just a year. Having started with an investment of just ₹30,000 from Kolkata, Wow! Momo grew to 282 outlets of Wow! Momo and 11 of Wow! China. It now aims to set up 120 more stores in the current financial year. Wow! Momo’s growth interestingly coincides with an economic slowdown, which has hit auto, FMCG and textile sectors In the latest funding round, Indian Angel Network exited the company by making as much as $3 million, with a solid return of 70%. “We will smartly use the capital infused to further scale our operations backed with disruptive research and development to reach out to a larger consumer base within the country,” said Sagar Daryani, CEO &amp; Co-founder of Wow! China/Wow! Momo. The company has monthly revenues to the tune of ₹15 crore. Wow! Momo had expanded to the Chinese QSR market with Wow! China, and faces competition from the likes of Jubilant which had also launched its brand – Hong’s Kitchen.

A Kolkata-based quick service restaurant chain ‘Wow! Momo’ is serving the Tibetan dish which has over years become one of India’s favourite street side snack in the most bizarre ways. A look at its menu flaunting Chocolate <keyword id="76833" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="momos">momos</keyword>, Moburg (momo burgers), prawn and fish momos, pizza momos and what not, can have you drooling! 

	The story of this startup reminds us of the famous phrase: every drop of water counts and together these drops can fill a dry pond. Here’s why!
 Based out of a small kiosk in a 30-square feet space in a Kolkata mall, two friends Sagar Daryani and Binod Homagai would sell momos to consumers on their own making Rs 2000 a day. Who would have expected the duo would soon become owners of a fast food restaurant chain that has spread it wings across six cities today (which include Kolkata, Bengaluru, Pune, Chennai, Kochi, and Delhi) and is expanding fiercely. After raising the first round of <keyword id="6357455" type="EVENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Funding">funding</keyword>, the company is going really fast now with 43 outlets in March to 63 in December. 

	“We started with Rs 30,000 and we bootstrapped for the next 6.5 years to reach a turnover of Rs 20 cores last March without any funding,” Sagar told Business Insider. 
 By the time they approached investors and zeroed in on the first round of funding from <keyword id="328347" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-Angel-Network">Indian Angel Network</keyword> (IAN), the startup was already at a turnover of Rs 20 crore, a run rate of Rs 2 crore a month from its 43 store count. 

	“I met Sanjeev Bikhchandani in Kolkata last year at Tiecon. We got talking and as destiny would have it, it somehow worked for both of us,” recounts Sagar, who was able to raise Rs 10 crore in August last year. The investment is being used to expand aggressively across cities and improving the product range for a better consumer experience. Currently, their product line comprises different variants of momos, thukpa, and meals. They serve 11 different flavors of momos available in steamed, fried, pan-fried, sizzler, and baked variants.

	

	The question is why did they not look for funds in the nascent stage? Because, there was no desperation to get money. “Over the years, we were approached by VCs but we were not keen because we felt that in order to raise money, you need to have the right bandwidth to scale up at very good pace. We wanted to build that and we were very happy to build a brand at our own profits,” says Sagar. “Also, I felt a bias when it came to valuations to tech versus non-tech companies which disappointed me. We were not getting the valuations we were looking for despite running a successful business model, having a great team to drive the business and expanding operations on our own,” he adds.
 

	However, when they did think of approaching investors, Sagar highlights, not every experience was a pleasant one. “A renowned VC asked me once if we would be interested in selling our company in the next three years. We understand that they are here to make money and being a consumer market that we are in, a quick exit would be a big brand coming and taking over. However, we were confident that we can take Wow! Momo as a brand from Rs 1000 to 10,000 crore ourselves,” he says.
 

	The confidence in these folks at Wow! Momo comes from the fact that both Binod and Sagar have learnt it the hard way. They used to serve consumers themselves in the Spencer outlet back in 2008. Seeing that the product was doing well, they shifted to a 90-square feet space in one of Kolkata’s best malls in no time where they started making Rs 7 to 8 lakh monthly which was the turning point for their business. From here on, they were able to afford employees, only to build a great team that they have now. 
 

	Future plans:
 

	After raising Rs 10 crore from Indian Angel Network in August this year, the company is going really fast now. 
 

	“We are looking at 70 -75 stores by March next year and around 105 stores by March 2017 with a turnover of 60 crore per annum. Seeing the KFCs and Dominos in India, our long term goal is to become an Indian brand going abroad,” says Sagar. The company plans to go for second round of funding in December next year and is looking at an IPO in about 5 to 10 years from now.

New Delhi, Indian startups have raised $732.7 million across 107 deals in January this year amid layoffs, shutdowns and top-level exits. According to TheKredible's data, there were 70 early-stage deals with a total value of $314.4 million, and 21 growth-stage deals worth $418.3 million. There were 16 undisclosed rounds. In January, the total funding for startups experienced a significant decrease from $1.7 billion in the last month of 2023. It was also the lowest funding amount for January when compared to the last three years, reports Entrackr. Notably, no startup managed to secure funding above $100 million in January. <keyword id="20320433" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vivifi" source="keywords">Vivifi</keyword>, a fintech startup, received the most funding in January, totalling $75 million. AiDash, wow! Momo, <keyword id="20450793" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="impact-analytics" source="keywords">Impact Analytics</keyword>, and BluSmart were among the five most funded companies last month. Three companies in the growth stage, OneCard, Infra.Market, and Yulu, have raised debt funding, as per the data. <keyword id="20450792" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="krutrim-si-designs" source="keywords">Krutrim SI Designs</keyword>, led by Bhavish Aggarwal, has announced $50 million in funding, making it the fastest unicorn in the Indian startup ecosystem. International Battery Finance and three fintech startups - StockGro, FinAGG, and Ecofy - made the top five list. StockGro raised the most debt last month, the report noted. Layoffs continued to stalk startups, with more than 600 layoffs across three companies. Online food delivery platform Swiggy led the way with 350 layoffs, followed by Cult.fit and InMobi. Flipkart, an e-commerce marketplace, was also in the news for firing over 1,000 employees. In addition to layoffs, several top-level employees left Indian startups. Udaan alone saw two departures, including CFO Aditya Pande and FMCG business head <keyword id="20400665" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vinay-shrivastava" source="keywords">Vinay Shrivastava</keyword>. The CEOs of Indus Appstore and KnowledgeHut, both owned by PhonePe, and the co-founders of DealShare and Fashinza have left. Besides layoffs, cricket non-fungible token (NFT) platform Rario and ByteDance's <keyword id="20158260" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="resso" source="keywords">Resso</keyword> announced to shut down operations.

Indian startups raised $732 million across 107 deals in January

In summation, as many as 35 major retail brands expanded their footprint to 14 tier-2 cities between January to September 2023, says a report by real estate services and investment firm CBRE. This flurry of activity has triggered a retail space boom in 14 cities that include Chandigarh, Jaipur, Indore, Goa, Mangalore, Kochi, Lucknow, Patna, Ranchi, Guwahati, Bhubaneshwar, Vizag, Mysore, and Coimbatore. Chains like Armani Exchange, Malabar Gold &amp; Diamonds, Tanishq, Marks &amp; Spencer, Starbucks, Pizza Express, Under Armour are now catering to a growing set of consumers in these cities. “Domestic and international fashion brands are looking to expand in non-metro cities, fueled by a well-aware and well-travelled consumer set,” said <keyword id="20208672" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ram-chandnani" source="keywords">Ram Chandnani</keyword>, MD, advisory &amp; transactions services of CBRE India. Changing consumption patterns are affecting the retail dynamics in these cities, the report says. developments in the cities also picked up pace. The total retail stock in these 14 cities stood at 29 million square feet, as of September 2023. Amongst them, Jaipur, Lucknow, and Chandigarh each boast retail stock ranging between 3-7 million square feet. In the three months between July and September 2023, around 2.4 million square feet was added in the 14 cities. Most of it was added in Chandigarh, Jaipur and Lucknow. Also, a similar amount – again 2.4 million square feet – was absorbed across these cities, led by Kochi, Jaipur, and Goa. “The e-commerce boom, tech-savvy consumer base, growing aspirations and surge in discretionary purchasing are defining the retail growth in tier-II cities. Most non-metro cities are established trade and business hubs and are now witnessing multinational corporations and start-ups setting up offices as well,” said Anshuman Magazine, chairman &amp; CEO, India, Southeast Asia, Middle East &amp; Africa of CBRE. The retail developments have a healthy mix of malls and high streets. But, they too are evolving from vanilla stores in high-streets to malls by top-end developers. A lot of high-end malls have also come up in recent times like Nexus Elante Mall in Chandigarh; World Trade Park Mall in Jaipur; DLF Mall in Panjim and more. “Investment-grade developers are setting up large-sized contemporary malls in these cities, which are seen as an entertainment destination and not just as a place to shop,” adds Magazine. If that doesn’t happen, it could mean a sharp cut in the cash-in-hand salary that you get to take home once the new financial year kicks off. “Ideal would be if the rules get notified and everybody gets a little bit of a breather. The new legislation applies and only kicks in let us say after x,y, z days. That would be ideal but that's wishful thinking at this point,” said Shambhavi Solanki, vice president of corporate human resources (HR) at Policy Bazaar during The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE) webinar on March 18. Timing is a concern for most companies. Businesses are still reeling from the impact of COVID-19 and the pandemic is not yet over. “It’s going to be a crazy implementation and I have huge questions. Will people come, read the calorie count and then leave the restaurant? Or instead of butter chicken they are going to order a salad?,” Kohli told Business Insider. The FHRAI has already written to the FSSAI, giving its inputs regarding the new guidelines. While Kohli said that he doesn’t disagree with the norms, it shouldn’t come as a mandate. “If the FSSAI wants to do this, it should be voluntary. In a period where we are already hit so badly, putting up these new norms… I would call it irrelevant,” said Kohli. Pradeep Shetty, the Sr Vice President of The Hotel and Restaurant Association of Western India said, “The intention of the FSSAI is noble, they want to bring down the trans fat. They don’t want India to go the way many western countries have. They aren’t prohibiting people from eating, but just to make an informed decision.” The standardization could still work for restaurants with a limited standard menu across the country – chains like McDonald’s, KFC, Dominos, among others. But it’s not going to be the same story for the very ‘Indian’ restaurants. Restaurants in India don’t have just one problem with the new labelling guidelines – in fact, the issues are going to be multifold. Kohli explained that having the new labelling guidelines means printed new menu cards leading to new marketing expenses, which are uncalled for. Moreover, the food at Indian restaurants is more often than not customised, which means customers have demands like “extra butter” or “make it with olive oil”. “That addition or deletion of butter makes all the difference in the calorific value. What we fear is more harassment for a sector that is already harassed,” he said. Counting the calories: The new global norm? Placing the calorie count on menu cards isn’t just a norm being introduced in India. It is already enforced in countries like the US and the UK as a measure to control obesity, albeit questionably. In fact, in the US a law was passed in 2018 that stated that any restaurant with 20 or more outlets will have to state the calorie count of its food items. Researchers at the Gerald J. and Dorothy R. Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University and Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/science/news/the-us-law-requiring-calorie-counts-on-menus-is-expected-to-save-tens-of-thousands-of-lives-and-over-10-billion-in-healthcare-costs-research-shows/articleshow/76324413.cms">conducted a study</a> that showed that such a move would produce $10-14 billion in healthcare cost savings and another $3-5 billion in societal cost savings. In India too, many brands have been following the standard of adding calorie count on menus even before it was a norm. “The customer today wants to know what they are consuming, how safe it is, where the produce came from, and so forth. To help with all these, it becomes essential for brands to help consumers with the required information, to keep their faith in the food they consume, and thereby, the brand. This will also develop cautious brand building practices across the board, guaranteeing quality output,” said Sagar Kochhar, Co-founder, Rebel Foods. While the policy has a long way to go, it poses another problem as well – how will the government keep a check on restaurants across the country. “That also means that restaurants will have to hire an expert to keep a check or define the calorie count, which is another added expense,” said Shetty.
