It is also the country that hosts the most asylum seekers. </p><p>So far this year, 222 attacks against homes and shelters for asylum seekers have been recorded. In those attacks, 104 people were injured, according to German newspaper <a href="http://www.zeit.de/politik/deutschland/2015-11/rechtsextremismus-fluechtlingsunterkuenfte-gewalt-gegen-fluechtlinge-justiz-taeter-urteile" target="_blank">Die Zeit</a>.</p><p>Yet despite German Chancellor Angela Merkel's promise last September that the government would go after such attackers with "all means available," charges have<span> only been filed in 5% of such cases.</span></p><p>Merkel has been hailed by some as the leader of Europe's humanitarian response to the refugee crisis and critiqued by others for her open-door policy. Even inside of her own party, the chancellor is facing backlash for her stance, which has sparked perhaps the biggest political controversy of her career.</p><p>Since January, Germany has registered almost 1 million asylum seekers, according to the <a href="http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-35027951" target="_blank">BBC</a>. And the number is expected to surpass 1 million by the end of the year, as the usual lull in the number of asylum seekers coming over in the colder months has so far not gone according to usual trends.</p><p><a href="http://www.zeit.de/politik/deutschland/2015-11/rechtsextremismus-fluechtlingsunterkuenfte-gewalt-gegen-fluechtlinge-justiz-taeter-urteile" target="_blank">Die Zeit</a>'s investigation into the cases showed that only four attacks resulted in the conviction of an attacker. Police found suspects in only one-quarter of the cases. Molotov cocktails or projectiles are often thrown from moving cars or from a distance with perpetrators disappearing quickly, making it hard for police to track them down.</p><p>The location of the shelters far away from cities makes witnesses scarce in most occurrences, and investigators are often faced with silence and a near-impossible list of questions.</p><p>The article pointed out that in the cases in which perpetrators were found, police used extensive resources. Lack of police personnel in Germany might be at least partly to blame for the lack of convictions, the publication reported.</p><p>The newspaper's investigation also showed that the number of solved crimes against refugee homes is far lower than for comparable infractions against other targets.</p><h2>Rising xenophobia</h2><p>Since the November 13 attacks in Paris, which left 130 people dead, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/states-rejecting-syrian-refugees-2015-11" target="_blank">world has seen a rise in anti-refugee sentiments</a>. In Europe, the attacks have made an already exasperated and scared population, tired of a seemingly endless stream of people pouring into the continent, more entrenched in their stances. And it could make attacks against asylum seekers more likely.</p><p>The rising xenophobia in Germany has also become apparent in the rising number of protests held by the anti-immigrant <a href="http://www.dw.com/en/pegida-march-goes-forward-despite-kristallnacht-anniversary/a-18837271" target="_blank">Pegida</a> ("Patriotic Europeans against the Islamization of the West") group and the spiking support for the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/paris-attacks-marine-le-pen-far-right-refugee-2015-11" target="_blank">far-right party Afd</a> in recent polls.</p><p>But anti-immigration sentiments have not been confined to Germany. Germany is failing to hold attackers of refugees accountable amid escalating violence

<p>Titan is a New Mexico-based company that makes high-flying solar powered drones, and it's one of Google's latest "moonshot" acquisitions. </p>
<p><span>Back in December, </span><span></span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/google-boston-dynamics-robots-2013-12" target="_blank">Google bought Boston Dynamics</a><span>, an engineering company that creates robots for the military. </span></p>
<p>Google's core business is search and advertising. So why is it doing buying a bunch of drones and robots? It sounds like something out of a sci fi novel.</p>
<p>But in fact, they're both long-term, strategic bets.</p>
<h3>The third phase of the Internet.</h3>
<p>Google is basically in its third phase. It's already mastered search and advertising, which were core desktop activities in the mid-2000s. Mobile came next, with its Android platform.</p>
<p>Both of those have given Google a massive audience. In February, Google saw 187 million unique visitors on desktop alone, making it the most-visited web property in the U.S., <a href="http://www.comscore.com/Insights/Press_Releases/2014/3/comScore_Media_Metrix_Ranks_Top_50_US_Desktop_Web_Properties_for_February_2014" target="_blank">according to ComScore</a>. The entire web received 222 million uniques that month - so you can see that Google is literally running out of Internet.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Android is the number one smartphone platform with 52% market share, <a href="http://www.comscore.com/Insights/Press_Releases/2014/4/comScore_Reports_February_2014_US_Smartphone_Subscriber_Market_Share" target="_blank">according to ComScore</a>.  </p>
<p>In order to keep growing, Google needs more people. Not just a few million more. Only hundreds of millions of new users will keep Google growing meaningfully. This is a practical problem for the company: There is no point in Google acquiring a company that has 50 million users, for instance. It just wouldn't move the needle.</p>
<p>There is only one place that hundreds of millions of untapped users exist: offline.</p>
<p>Two-thirds of the world's population <a href="http://www.internet.org/" target="_blank">does not yet have Internet access</a>. That means Google isn't yet reaching roughly 4.6 billion people. <span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"><br /></span></p>
<p>In order to reach these people, Google needs the entire world to have Internet access. (Facebook has also recently woke up to this third phase, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg's Internet.org project which has much the same goals.)</p>
<p><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/google-launches-internet-balloons-2013-6" target="_blank">Google has already announced Project Loon</a> to bring Internet access to parts of the world without it, and offers Google Fiber for high-speed access. With drones, the company could bring Internet access to millions of people, and even help with disaster relief.</p>
<h3>Why robots are the future.</h3>
<p>With robots, Google is betting on the future in a different way. Given Google's obsession with knowledge and organizing information, we could see Google beefing up its search offerings with artificial intelligence from Boston Dynamics, which is a leading provider of human simulation software. Its robots need to react independently to their environment - and perfecting that type of machine-learning is widely regarded as the key to the next phase of tech.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-deepmind-2014-1" target="_blank">Google also recently bought DeepMind</a>, an artificial intelligence company that helps computers learn and operate like humans.</p>
<p>Even though Google search is already incredibly solid, Google likely wants to use AI to improve its efficiency and the quality of data gathered. </p>
<p>It's also worth noting that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-deepmind-2014-1" target="_blank">Facebook reportedly had its eyes set on both DeepMind</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-in-talks-to-acquire-drone-company-titan-aerospace-for-internetorg-2014-3" target="_blank">Titan</a>. But Google beat them to the punch - twice. </p>
<p>With Google's Titan acquisition, it likely sees it as a way to advance Project Loon, as well as advance its imagery with Google Maps and Google Earth. </p>
<p>Project Loon began with a pilot test in June 2013, but there's still no word on the official launch date. </p>
<p>So while the drones and robots may seem speculative and whimsical - like something from a movie - they're really strategic bets that will take years or decades to pay off. Yet they're also both crucial if Google is to continue growing.</p>
<p>The drones will find new users and get them online. The robots will make it easier for new users to understand the web once they get there.</p>

They were prescribed 116 million items by doctors, and found themselves joined by more than 1,750,000 American tourists. </p>
<p>Meanwhile, in one small, financial corner of the capital, the population, in every 24-hour period of the year, spiked from 222 residents to more than 127,000.</p>
<p>These staggering statistics are the work of geographer James Cheshire and visual artist Oliver Uberti, who have merged to create a new series of maps depicting London as "<a href="http://theinformationcapital.com/">the most data-heavy capital in the world</a>."</p>
<p>The maps and infographics are as diverse as the information they cover - highlighting, for example, the 2,580 mobile phones left in a single year at Heathrow Airport, and charting the 1.1 million phone calls the emergency services took in 2013. Approximately 32,500 of them, by the way, came from incapacitated binge drinkers. </p>
<p>In "There is order and beauty in the chaos of your commute," Cheshire and Uberti capture London's commuting routes using data from Oyster travel cards logged by University College London. Tracking the likes of train journeys and taxi fares and digitalizing their movements, they arc to form a colorful algorithm of details. </p>
<p>"Almost every journey taken in London leaves a digital trace in its wake," explain Cheshire and Uberti on their website. "It may be hard to appreciate as you squeeze onto a Tube or bus in the morning, but you are one of millions adding to the beauty of the currents captured." </p>
<p><strong>In "Generation rent," the graph on the left shows the change in median monthly rent prices from January 2013 to April 2014. On the right, there's a visualization of the cost increase for two-bedroom apartments along the Tube's Central line, with inner stations costing far more than their suburban neighbours.</strong></p>

<p>On his website, he explains: "We think it is justified for two reasons: London not only generates a huge volume of data, it shares an unprecedented amount with its citizens to use as they wish.</p>
<p>"Open data initiatives exist in other cities, not least in Europe and North America, but what gives London an information edge is the belief that data can not only record social change but also instigate it."</p>
<p><strong>"Lost and found," seen below, looks at all the items lost at Heathrow Airport in 2013. <p>He says on his site: "As an American, I couldn't believe how much government data was publicly available and how easy it was to access it online."</p>
<p>Uberti and Cheshire used Google Hangouts to discuss the project and see it in motion; together inspired by questions about London and finding out what makes it tick. </p>
<p><strong>The UK capital is a very diverse city. In fact, three million of its 8.2 million citizens come from overseas. Below, "Twitter ink" highlights tweets by home country and projects Twitter users from places such as Kuwait, Turkey, and Italy. </strong></p>

Numerous Freedom of Information Requests and compiled information nestles alongside artistic experimentation and creativity. </span></p>
<p><strong><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">This chart features the top 20 nations by spending, per visitor, in 2012. The US, by far, had the most tourists - but it was Saudi Arabia, right down at the bottom, whose citizens spent most. Each individual parted with thousands. </span></strong></p>
